My #8, Group's #7 (68 pts). Tastes blind. (1366 views)
Tasted by jwebtx on 3/17/2019: stewed ripe fruit and the remainder is in sharp decline. drink now. (1432 views)
Tasted by Quarked on 3/4/2019 & rated 90 points: Fruits are quite muted, flavors dominated by secondary notes. Quite lovely, but I think I would have liked it a bit better a few years ago. (1334 views)
Tasted by zinnut on 11/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Still very much alive and in no danger of falling off the cliff. A bit hot but plenty of sweet fruit from the grenache and brightness from the mouvedre.
Great with lamb chops. (1336 views)
Tasted by redpine42 on 6/18/2017 & rated 90 points: Nice taste still. Some depth. Drink up now. (1839 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 2/5/2017 & rated 93 points: what everyone else said. still going strong. needs about 30 minutes of air. disregard the drink window (1248 views)
Tasted by jwebtx on 8/23/2015: Blew away all expectations. Showing very well with the purest cherry flavor I can ever recall. I didn't take detailed notes, but there was a lot going on. Perfect with a Flannery hanger. (1938 views)
Tasted by J @ y H @ c k on 4/12/2014 & rated 93 points: This wine begins to prove a point I have argued for years. We must be prepared to allow Cali wines to age in order to bring out the best tertiary favors in the same way we allow French Rhones to age. Decanted for an hour and then followed for three hours. At first, the wine was beginning to show the emergence of deep cherry flavor. Actually like the start of a 50 year old Hermitage we had a few years ago. As it gains more air, the fruit comes out even more. There is raspberry and blackberry to go with the cherry. The flavors are exploding. The feel is smooth and almost glycerine-like, without any glycerine flavor. The finish goes on and on and the fruit flavor actually gets stronger as the finish continues. I have three more. I want to space them out because I think in 5 more years this will be an absolutely exceptional wine, not an exceptional example of Cali Rhone Rangers, but an exceptional wine of any type. 93 pts is today. If I am right, give this five years and it will be otherworldly. (2500 views)
Tasted by austinbeeman- austinbeeman.com on 6/9/2013 & rated 93 points: An awesome full-bodied Syrah at excellent maturity. Lots of smoke and bacon and yummy-yummy plum fruit. Long layered and very flavorful. Big with excellent grace and balance.

Tasted by J @ y H @ c k on 4/20/2013 & rated 92 points: This was one of my first direct from the winery purchasers. About 7 years ago. It carries its age very well. Two and a half hour decant. Beautiful smooth red fruit. Strong raspberry on the nose and cherry and raspberry on the palate. Few tannins left unresolved but I do not think this has reached its peak, and its certainly is not on the down slope. Excellent balance. A long finish and a very smooth mouth feel. Rebecca voted for 93 points and she never gives anything that many points. She said wonderful fruit and incredibly smooth. Honey without the sweetness. (2767 views)
Tasted by Thunder16 on 2/8/2013 & rated 93 points: Flavors of strawberry, smooth, drinks like grape juice in a wonderful way. A great example of a wine that has aged well and just shows how smooth it can be. (2557 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 1/1/2013 & rated 94 points: This wine killed tonight. Nice fruit, velvet textre, total integration. DRINK NOW!!!! (2226 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 3/25/2012 & rated 90 points: W bratwurst/kale/potatoes. This did not go well with the spice of the sausage but was a good wine. Beautiful fresh dark berry color and nose. Some flowery scents. On palate good dark cherry fruit. With decent balance. A bit dry on the finish. Wont get better. Was very nice after dinner when the food was gone. (2322 views)
Tasted by chigirl on 3/25/2012 & rated 90 points: Cork crumbled upon opening - we decanted, and let sit for a bit. Needed to breathe. Very smooth, dark berries. (2136 views)

Tasted by jsulliv on 1/17/2012 & rated 87 points: Cork fell apart upon opening and was soaked roughly 3/4 of the way up. Observed the same "off" aroma that others have mentioned, but thankfully it blew off over time leaving behind quite a nice wine. This is dark, dark red - not transparent at all. Notes of red fruits, spice, and dirt. In the mouth this wine is surprisingly much lighter than one would think. More red fruits and a hint of tartness. Overall this was very balanced, with just a touch of acidity still poking out. I think that this wine is in a very good place right now, but I definitely don't think it's getting any better from here on out. Drink up! (2112 views)
Tasted by Chateau Cabron on 12/19/2011 & rated 88 points: Dark garnet red, opaque complexion
Strong notes of baked black fruits, dark chocolate, sun-dried leather and churned earth. Heavy, silk laden mouthfeel with a nice grip of tannin. Lingering minute long finish accented by dried herb, black fruit and leather. Overall a solid Californian interpretation of a Southern Rhone blend. I'd personally drink over the shorter term within the net 3-5 years as opposed to long term aging. Secondary aromatics have developed nicely, but the overall ripeness level pushes the boundaries for my palate. Personally, I feel it's a wine that's a bit "too much", but there are plenty of others who I know that would love this style. (2038 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 12/13/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet color. Very aromatic with dark fruit, stems, and burt candy. Blackberry and dark cherry flavors with a medium body and nice balance. A little hot on the finish, but nicer in general than I remember previously. (2103 views)
Tasted by zheem on 12/9/2011: Cork wet almost to mouth of bottle. No overt oxidation or corked aroma, but some other off aroma upon opening, noted also on 7/15/11, that similarly blew off by second day leaving a most delicious light bodied wine that was a great food accompaniment . (2036 views)
Tasted by ToddS on 10/29/2011: Drink it now. Cork was soaked to within 1/16 inch of leaking out. (2304 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 10/15/2011 & rated 90 points: BLACKBERRIES, CHERRIES, SPICE AND A TOUCH OF EARTHNESS IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR. MEDIUM LENGTH FINISH (773 views)
Tasted by zheem on 7/15/2011: Wine began with an off aroma which blew of by the next day. Now quite delicious even after several days--hard to comment on this as flawed or in awkward stage. (2220 views)
Tasted by sayward on 1/2/2011: this bottle seemed a little "off" so i will without rating. this wine seems to be losing some punch. i don't think it will show well into 2012. (2630 views)
Tasted by sayward on 12/10/2010 & rated 91 points: really liked the nose and the palate of this wine. smelled of acidic red fruits like pomagranate and unripe plum. also smelled some moss and dirt which i assume came from the grenache. a very integrated palate and hit my taste buds in a lot of the right spots. i think this wine drinking well at this point of its life and will re-visit my remaining bottle in a year or so. (2783 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 9/28/2010 & rated 91 points: Interesting red. Hard to pin down - definitely sensed a lot of grenache. Reminded me of a light Rhone. Quite pretty - a lot of rasberry notes, almost sweet. (2812 views)

Winery Notes (Copain Wines)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

James Berry Vineyard

Under the expert care of Justin Smith, James Berry Vineyard has quickly established itself as one of the premiere Rhône varietal vineyards in the state. The “Carlisle” block of James Berry Vineyard is located just below the terraced “Bone Rock” section and is planted to Syrah clones 470 and 174. Justin practices sustainable farming, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. And with the limestone laden soils and devigorating rootstock, the vines struggle, yielding small quantities of intensely flavored fruit.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
