Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SchlaepDog on 10/20/2023 & rated 92 points: Drank from a Zalto Den'ark Bordeaux glass. Use the Durand opener and the cork was pristine with little seepage.

Nose is a bit alcoholic, otherwise is a bit musty with raisin and other stewed fruit.

Palate is better. Faint cherry and strawberry fruit is framed against distinct cedar flavors that certainly seem mature, but not over the hill by any means. Finish is a bit astringent, slightly tannic, with the cedar flavors more prominent than the remaining red fruit. Nonetheless, a very good example of aged CA Cabernet.

I did not cellar this bottle, this bottle was purchased recently from the secondary market, and while good, it doesn't seem to live up to the other taster's recent experiences. Drink now. (341 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 10/18/2023 & rated 96 points: My last magnum. Slow ox'd for 30 min before putting the stopper in the bottle and taking to Capital Grille for Leon's 66th. Cork came out in 3 pieces at home with the last third pretty soft and saturated.

Still quite dark in the glass no hint of age or bricking. This wine is 13.5% alc and has aged beautifully. This is my 2nd magnum of this. The first one was a 97 last year, I think.

Enjoyed with Wagyu, king crab, lobster and mushrooms along with great company and friends/colleagues I have known for 35 years. Just a fantastic evening....the initial nose on this at the pnp and for the 1st hour was a 98. Perfumed, floral, sweet fruit and incense. Richard Arrowood was right when he said the climate on the Sonoma side was more suited to Cabs for aging. This magnum bottle had an easy 10 years left, maybe more. It's classic Cabernet, integrated, smooth, hint of mushrooms, leather, roses, and a cedar component on the finish. Only at 6 hours of air, late into the evening at home on the last glass did the fruit turn a tad blacker and denser. Again, this is a sign that the wine has not aged out, but can go for many years longer. Just fabulous....... (1289 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 7/29/2023 & rated 94 points: PnP. After 20 minutes in the glass it was ready. Enjoyed over next 2.5 hours. Blackberries, red fruits, eucalyptus, vanilla Oak. Very smooth. Beautiful. (530 views)
Tasted by jrmorrison on 2/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Still impressive, notes of berries, spices and tobacco. Smooth and long finish (510 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 9/2/2022 & rated 97 points: WOTN, no question. Enjoyed by all around the table, including some late additions, new friends A & C who happen to be French and Portuguese and no strangers to good wines.....opened my Mag bottle to find the cork still doing very well after 27 years. Saturation about
a third of the way up. Drink by dates on here say by 2019. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Still a beautiful aged dark garnet in the glass, a faint bit lighter at the margins but no true bricking yet. The nose is immediately an exquisite and classic old Napa profile with leather and graphite along with some earthy notes, along with some cedar. Drinking darker and stronger than anyone would imagine at this age. The palate is one of dark red cherry fruit and still beautiful, high toned acidity to it. Medium weight in the mouth. Prodigious sediment on the cork and around the neck of the bottle, which was carefully removed with a paper towel and I used a finer to pour from the bottle into glasses. The wine is very clean as a result. The palate reflects pretty much everything one encounters on the nose. Just a beautiful wine and the only thing holding it back from a higher score from me is limited depth to the layers of fruit at this stage, but that's really nitpicking and with such a grand wine at this age, maybe not even fair? This certainly has another 10 years of life at a minimum, I would think. I'll be holding my other mag of this for a while to see where it goes.....

Addendum: 9/3/2022......small glass left on the dresser overnight so fully 19-20 hours of air and still performing to a 95 at the least! How does a 27 yo Cali cab not completely fall apart with that much air? Unbelievable...... (2077 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 9/2/2022 & rated 95 points: Winapalooza VI; 9/2/2022-9/4/2022 (Atlanta): This was a signed magnum brought by Mark and the empty now sitting proudly in my cellar.
This wine was unbelievable. Drinking so young you would never have guessed this was more than a decade old. Perfectly mature and integrated and a perfect match for our steak dinner.
Mark’s note is more comprehensive but this really was a treat and lots of life left.
I have 92, 97 and ‘99 entry level bottles from this producer and they have all been beyond expectations (except the corked one I guess..lol) (2292 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 8/19/2022 & rated 96 points: Decanted for 60 minutes before service. Dark cherry red color, no bricking and hardly any fading. Aromas of cedar and cherries. Smooth and lush on the palate, plums, cherries, tobacco, cedar. Beautifully resolved tannins. Great structure. Lovely acidity and balance. Fully mature and lovely. Finishes long and sweet. Even at this age it should drink well for another 5 years. Alas, my last bottle. With New York strips. (630 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 6/20/2022 & rated 93 points: 60 minute decant. Love older Arrowood. Racy but sophisticated. Black and red fruits, wonderful acidity balance. Very smooth. (564 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 1/17/2022 & rated 93 points: 30 minute decant. Velvety blackberries wrapped in a vanilla cream blanket, slight touches of soft leather, and later some slightly sour raspberries at the end of a long finish. (610 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 3/20/2021: This took a good deal of air to come around but then drank consistently over two night. Cassis with some fruit skin. Coffee and leather. Medium richness. In a full fledged place of maturity. Any further aging is going to see it drift well into a more tertiary expression. The acidity shows a touch tart already but only that. Somewhat Bordeaux like on the palate. Well integrated and balanced. A very nice wine. It didn't blow me away with complexity but it's got some grace behind the power making it drink real nice. (945 views)
Tasted by smcg on 7/26/2020 & rated 94 points: Drinking really nicely. Balanced, solid fruit, reasonable complexity. Probably won’t get any better. Sad it is my last bottle. (935 views)
Tasted by Chrisinroch on 5/7/2020 & rated 88 points: Passive storage dice 2010 HDH auction. Cork crumbly but intact. Decanted for sediment. Delicious bright fruit w a bit of leather. The alcohol is there but not off-putting. Perfectly integrated. Really fringing well. (973 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 1/19/2018 & rated 90 points: Green herbs, earth, leather, cassis and dark red berries. Comes off a little hot with a metallic finish at the start but opens up nicely with lots of air to show ripe red fruit and coffee bean notes . Lingering grippe tannin. Drink now-2022. (1768 views)
Tasted by CranBurgundy on 3/13/2017 & rated 96 points: It's been over a year since my last note on this, and it has improved. The tobacco has been joined by leather, and both the menthol and oak have abated just a bit - a change which augments the dark fruit perfectly. There's no trace of tannin at all anymore, and the acidity has dropped a hair, making this an exquisitely easy drinking wine. Excellent from entry to a nice long finish. (2531 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 12/25/2016: Showed very well at 21 years old out of magnum. Jammy fruit in the nose with hints of tobacco and floral. Currants, black cherries, and blackberries in the flavor. Very smooth medium to long finish. Impressive. (2878 views)
Tasted by Tannic Monster on 6/19/2016 & rated 93 points: Drank last night along side some amazing wines. This is a beautiful, elegant, plush Cabernet which is at a wonderful place after 21 years.
Red and black fruits, spice, leather, with a silky mouth feel and a long finish. (2273 views)
Tasted by CranBurgundy on 1/31/2016 & rated 95 points: Love the classic aromas of dark fruit with tobacco, a little smoke, and a hint of menthol..... but of course I would because I love Arrowood. The fruit is a little dialed down compared to the '01 RS, but any note of wood is either gone or so well integrated it only enhances the nose. The palate is completely in sync with the nose and the tannins are imperceptible with just a wee bit of tartness from the acidity. Old school at it's best with a looooong finish and silky mouth feel. Down to 5 bottles left from the case. There's no reason to hold it any longer as it's reached a wonderful spot being completely resolved. (2737 views)
Tasted by bjwca on 10/11/2015 & rated 91 points: Lots of fruit still present, and well integrated. Still dark red in color, with perhaps I slight hint of brown. Very enjoyable wine. Wish I had more bottles! (2044 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 7/15/2015 & rated 93 points: The cork on this was almost completely shot, and a nubbin from the bottom had to be pushed into the bottle. However, the wine was in good shape. On the nose, menthol, earth, and strawberry. On the palate, black cherry, blackberry, menthol, and tobacco, with green herbal notes and no detectable tannins on the medium to long finish; there is enough acidity to keep this from being flabby, but it's fairly soft. An excellent aged Cabernet. (1693 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 5/27/2015 & rated 95 points: LOVE this producer in the day…..20yr old wine from a classic vintage…..cellared since release….beautiful dark cherry color…perfect old school Cali cab nose…dried herbs, tobacco, licorice, creme de cassis, old cellar dust…..silky smooth and pure in the mouth…really quite youthful, still has a nice kick with the dusty and spicy tannin…but MAN…the age has polished this wine into a beauty! The perfect ripeness of dark berry fruit, still fresh, layered with complexities of flowers, crushed graphite, dried bing cherry, lead pencil…little menthol on this finish. Finesse…seamless purity…just a classic mouthful of Cabernet goodness….with plenty of fuel left in the tank! Brilliant! (1980 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 4/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Good from start to finish. Tannins and fruit well integrated, but fruit fading...glad this my last bottle, probable near the end of its good window and this could fall off a cliff at any moment. (1696 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 12/30/2014: Needed air for this to shine. Dark fruit and tobacco with silky tannins on the second day. The first day, it was rough and needed the steak we had with it to help make it enjoyable. If I had another bottle, I would give it an hour in the decanter. (1526 views)
Tasted by Milos on 3/24/2014 & rated 93 points: The bright dark ruby red colour was so inviting. The nose of red cherry, raspberry and blackberry and just a hint of wood and spice. The palate shows fine dusty tannins, tobacco and great acidity to carry the fruit to a long finish. So enjoyable now but I think it is still getting better. (1757 views)
Tasted by sergiozy on 1/29/2012 & rated 90 points: though wine it took 3 hours to open up for the first 3 it looked like the wine had been overtannined
but then it opened and all the fruit came out need to drink but it needs to be paired with another cab for contrast (3265 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 12/26/2011 & rated 93 points: Dark purple color with ruby at the rim. There is no way this looks like a 15 year old wine. I am really impressed by the nose - black cherry, plum, menthol, tobacco, and herbs. The palate is packed with pure black cherry and plum while menthol creeps in and leafy tobacco and herbs round out the profile. Structurally, this has refreshing acidity and rounded tannins that give this full-bodied wine power without being overblown. The finish is long and polished. Overall, this is why I love Dick Arrowood's wines - polished and powerful without being heavy-handed, and they improve substantially with age. (2944 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
