Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MJobes on 11/3/2022: Definitely feeling “aged”, but still showing some fruit and some spice. Silky and soft on the palate and a nice finish. (409 views)
Tasted by travisgm on 6/20/2020 & rated 99 points: One of the best wines I have ever had. Delicious and complex with a long dry finish. Strong flavors include licorice and dark jammy fruit. Hazzah 99/100 (978 views)
Tasted by Ben Stewart on 6/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Aromas of dry sweet black liquorice, cumin, Cardom spices, vanilla, dense black cherry, with warmth in front of mouthfeel, zingy acidic on the front of the palette, with very smooth sweet tannins. Long finish with a bit of dry earthyness. (1308 views)
Tasted by maranoli on 8/10/2017 & rated 91 points: Opened 4 bottles. 3 in perfect condition, 1 flawed. Decanted for 1 hour then served with slow cooked lamb shoulder and celeriac puree. Heavy sediment in the bottle. Wine still almost purple black colour. No sign of bricking. Wonderful expressive nose of fruits of the forest. Almost jammy. Not complex but balanced and very smooth. Opened up a little in the glass. Real treat. (2195 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 6/25/2017 & rated 89 points: dark transparent red-brown
dark fruits & black olives tertiary nose
medium bodied, soft firm tannins, fine balance, fine structure, medium complexity, mature, somewhat over the peak, but still enjoyable (2372 views)
Tasted by mirefoot on 3/14/2015 & rated 85 points: Make sure it breathes for 20 mins. (3676 views)
Tasted by theonlylittledog on 9/7/2014 & rated 92 points: Still full of life. Backbone of jammy black fruit still there but softened with age. (3702 views)
Tasted by Rnarkiss on 5/17/2014 & rated 90 points: The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like blueberry, blackberry, black currant (cassis), raisin, strawberry jam, coffee, vanilla, black pepper and sherry. (3973 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 11/25/2013 & rated 91 points: Mid garnet graduating to a bricking rim.
The nose shows super-ripe black fruits with liquorice, marinated blackcurrants, cloves, cinnamon and cassia root, and a vanilla pod ice cream element. Some tertiary was also poking through.
Super smooth entry, the wine is hugely rich with glycerol and just about enough acidity to keep it balanced. A creamy, supple mid-palate, the tannins are ripe and seamless, and the flavours show creme de mure, blackberry, rhubarb, cassis, liquorice and overripe nectarine. Plush to the back palate with a touch more blueberry and spices appearing, this is a high-quality wine even if it doesn’t feel that complex. (85 views)
Tasted by brisbane piefan on 8/9/2013 & rated 94 points: Smoky nose of rich dark fruits. Initially in mind of an old arm chair - leathery and comfortable. Dark fruits continue on the palate with a rich chocolatey mid palate. Not overly long but very enjoyable. (3787 views)
Tasted by il_diavolo on 12/20/2011 & rated 90 points: I read somewhere drink through 2020 and I thought no way, but I can believe it now. Purple colour. Nose of stewed prunes and some blackberry. Palate wise I get prunes, blackberry and toasted oak, mixed with a certain sweetness. Nice smooth finish. Overall this is a fine wine to last like this at age 11 in a hot vintage - I do believe the vintage heat has left a slight impact in terms of the sweetness and prune flavour but if you appreciate the australian shiraz style you won't be disappointed. (5949 views)
Tasted by Badamf on 3/7/2011 & rated 90 points: Wow, black fruit still dominating after 11 years... needed a good long decant, but has developed some good tertiary notes. Black fruit, vanilla, spice, medicenal notes and nice underlying earthiness. Think this will improve further, I think.. (5100 views)
Tasted by AN on 1/8/2011 & rated 85 points: This wine was just soooo overwhelming - the room filled up with its fruity and vanilla aromas as soon as I opened the bottle (magnum). Beautiful nose, however, sooo intense. Just could not believe it. On the palate again, very pronounced oak, black hot cherries, lots of alcohol. Left it in a decanter for 24 hours, then it started to get drinkable. For a wine of this class it needed to be more balanced, this was just too much on steroids. Cheers! (4732 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 12/4/2010 & rated 90 points: Big and chewy. Tough food pairing. Great on its own, but was not a great match with the braised short ribs. (4586 views)
Tasted by joshwoodward on 10/3/2010 & rated 92 points: Wine Club: Accidental Syrah Tasting (Bowling Green, OH): Wow, this is unexpectedly beautiful. The age is perfect - just enough secondary notes to mellow out what was obviously some fairly massive fruit in its youth. Very complex flavors, including some of my beloved poop. (4513 views)
Tasted by respfinch on 5/29/2010 & rated 86 points: Underwhelmed, especially when you consider the price point. Found the much cheaper Futures to be a better drink. (3727 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 11/6/2009 & rated 87 points: Manchester Offline (Choice Bar & Restaurant): A very sweet, very jammy, rather simple nose: sweet plummy fruit with some chocolate. On the palate, it's sweet and jammy with parkeresque fruit gobbiness. Good if you like this sort of thing, but it left me feeling unrewarded. (4536 views)
Tasted by docwine2 on 10/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Sweet, ripe fruit. Coffee, liquirice, tobacco. Round and mature. Well integrated tannins and acids. Excellent, but my memory of last years bottle was more to it's advantage.

Probably won't gain much on further cellaring (4341 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 3/28/2009 & rated 90 points: Decanted 4 hours. Initially some unpleasant poopy funk on the nose. Dropped a penny in the decanter about 2 hours into the decant. When checked back, the funk was all but gone. Very structured mouthfeel, with sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit. Almost jam-like sweetness. Well-integrated tannins and acidity made this an easy drinking Shiraz. Enjoyable with dinner (vegetarian burritos), and totally quaffable, but nothing super-special. (4117 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 9/14/2008 & rated 85 points: Nice structure, but for my palate the new wood overpowered any fruit. No change over the hour that we drank this bottle...perhaps extended decanting is needed. (4290 views)
Tasted by jamieirving on 11/19/2006 & rated 90 points: Made from low yielding Shiraz vines in the Stonewell, Kalimna, Koonunga, Ebenezer and Greenock districts of the Barossa Valley this wine is fermented and then matured for 18 months in a mixture of new French (73%) and American (27%) oak. Deep, dense, black in colour this wine is starting to show some maturity. The nose is incredibly savoury with just a hint of liquorice. The palate shows blackcurrant fruit above all others. A hint of mint and a touch of oak finish the equation. Very nice indeed.

Tasted in the Grand Tasting at the 10th Decanter Fine Wine Encounter, Landmark Hotel, London. (4638 views)
Tasted by Wrighty on 11/9/2006 & rated 86 points: Watson's World Wine Week tasting - 06 (Marriot Hotel, Hong Kong): A very fumey, sickly nose which spoilt the lovely structured palate. (6170 views)

Peter Lehmann

Producer website

Who is Peter Lehmann?

Peter Lehmann, with 33 vintages already under his belt, started his own winery in 1979, partly as a means of helping with the glut of grapes then afflicting the Barossa. "I'll take your grapes and turn them into wine," he told the desperate growers, many of them conservative farmers of Silesian descent who regarded their old vines as part of their patrimony. "But I'll only be able to pay you when I sell the wine." They gratefully accepted. Without this deal, it is widely thought that the Barossa would have lost a huge chunk of its old vines. The 'Masters' wines are made from the parcels regarded by the winemakers as the best Semillon, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz of the vintage.

Peter Lehmann Wines
In 1979 Peter Lehmann parted ways with Saltram to start Masterson Wines, the company which has since evolved into Peter Lehmann Wines, in a move solely designed to help the growers he had built relationships with over the years. Peter took the surplus grapes and doing business on a handshake sold wine on a “pay now and we’ll deliver in two years” arrangement called ‘The Futures’. This raised enough money to buy the growers’ fruit and process it into what became the first ever vintage of Peter Lehmann wine in 1980. Today the winemaking team at Peter Lehmann have a collective winemaking mentality defined by former chief winemaker and mentor, Andrew Wigan. Over the years there has been a natural evolution within the team but the approach has remained the same; consistency and a continuous strive for perfection. "We are always looking for ways to make better wine. To never rest on our laurels. There is a strong sense of pride and tradition that surround our wines.” Tim Dolan, Senior Winemaker

2000 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Stonewell

From winery website: 2000 Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz
Stonewell Shiraz is the best, most concentrated Peter Lehmann Shiraz of vintage. Released July 2005.
Stonewell Shiraz has over the years been accorded the highest place in the echelons of Barossa Shiraz. 2000 Stonewell is the 14th of its line, and continues the great tradition of Barossa shiraz at its finest. Stonewell is made from the very best of the superlative Barossa Shiraz vineyards available to Peter Lehmann. The grapes are drawn only from low-yielding vineyards in the drier western areas of the Barossa Valley. These vineyards, some planted well over 100 years ago, produce sparse bunches with tiny berries – small black jewels – the secret of Stonewell Shiraz. The 2000 vintage, was very low yielding and consequently, the 2000 Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great depth and intensity.
Fruit Sources: Low yielding vineyards in the Stonewell, Kalimna, Koonunga, Ebenezer and Greenock districts of the Barossa Valley.
Colour: Incredibly dense depth of colour with the first hints of maturity at the rim.
Bouquet: A concentration of the most luxurious of dark chocolate enveloped prunes, hints of mint and smoky oak complexity.
Palate: An explosion of dark chocolate and prunes reined in by fine, dusty tannins. It has the velvet intensity so characteristic of Stonewell Shiraz; the fruit, oak and tannins married in a totally harmonious whole.
Maturation: Fermented and thence matured for 18 months in a mixture of new French (73%) and American (27%) oak hogsheads. Bottled 12th February 2002.
Cellaring: A wine which can be confidently cellared under ideal conditions for many years.
Alcohol/Volume: 14.5%
Serving Suggestions: A superb accompaniment for robustly flavoured red meat dishes, rare beef with a fine demi-glace and rich game dishes. Best with hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, Peccorino or an aged Raclette.
