Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oldwines on 10/28/2015 & rated 90 points: On first opening it seemed slightly oxidized but with air it rounded out and was more rich. Golden yellow color. Nose has hazelnut, peach toast, butter slight citrus. Acidity vey moderate. Fairly rich on the palate. It took a long time after decanting to fully come together. Hours. Flavors reflect the nose with a moderately butter flavor and texture. Finish fairly long. Went really well with soft scrambled eggs and white truffles. (1907 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 7/12/2015 flawed bottle: The cork looked good coming out. The color of the wine was a medium straw gold and didn't look bad. But, the wine was oxidized just enough to make it unpleasant to drink. (1923 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 8/20/2014 & rated 93 points: The cork practically crumbled and I thought it would be corked, but it was just fine. This wine has held up well. It was never about fruit but about structure. There is a real nice feeling of body with this wine independent of any fruit component that I liked. This is an age worthy wine that requires good cellaring to preserve cork integrity. I recommend this producer to anyone who wants to try a different elegant side of California chardonnay via Chablis.  Tasted by jeff nowak on 10/12/2012 & rated 90 points: quite a bit better than a bottle i had three years ago. this is getting long in the tooth with a hint of oxidation, but i was pleasantly surprised by the lingering fruit and complexity. i know the wine's rep for extreme aging, but i don't subscribe. drink now.  Tasted by Linn on 8/17/2012 & rated 95 points: What an amazin wine. Still far from end of live at Age 10. Can easily challange most Burgundy Chards. (3820 views)
Tasted by snwcln on 4/18/2012 & rated 94 points: 94 pts (2239 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 8/21/2011 & rated 88 points: Hanzell Dinner at Heirloom Cafe: Showing only the good signs of its years, this was surprisingly youthful and similar in many ways to the '08 but with both a tad more oak and the saline nuances of slow aging. (3050 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 7/23/2009 & rated 90 points: Cork crumbled upon opening and I thought I was in trouble, but wine was okay. I can see how Jeff Nowak didn't find this one good; the fruit is not very prominent. However, it has a wonderful acidity to it that I found very nice and refreshing, not at all like most Cali chards at all. Legs ran pretty fast but they never stopped coming. Never saw that in a wine; one wave would finish and the next was right behind, and this went on for a good five minutes. Straw colored yellow, very smooth, acidity not so overwhelming you get heartburn. Had with chicken filets and zucchini and potatoes au gratin. It worked really well too. This is the kind of wine that requires good paring with the right food to be a good dining experience. And I think with the acidity it needs certain foods to shine. Ready now. (2941 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 7/10/2009 & rated 86 points: sorry, i just don't fall into the camp that this is a great producer of chardonnay, and this bottle is consistent with my general opinion. kinda flabby, under-ripe. (2217 views)
Tasted by mattiasjansson on 8/1/2007 & rated 89 points: Backstreet - Whites (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix, AZ): A hole in the middle followed by a surprisingly nice finish (3261 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 8/1/2007 & rated 88 points: Phoenix eRP Offline - Whites (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): Pears and peppermint on the palate. Very spicy. Rich and concentrated but with a tart finish. (3258 views)
Tasted by goofy Yno on 8/1/2007 & rated 80 points: simple wine without alot going on (2553 views)
Tasted by Eric on 4/15/2007 flawed bottle: Hanzell Vertical (Seattle, WA): Corked (4056 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 4/15/2007 flawed bottle: Hanzell Vertical (Union Restaurant, Seattle.): Touch of cork on the nose, but flat profile and definite feel on the palate. Corked. (3824 views)
Tasted by Mprize on 3/29/2007 & rated 89 points: Mastro's Dinner. Delicious, crisp wine w/ apple fruit, not too oaky, more in french style. (2664 views)
Tasted by dream on 10/15/2006 & rated 90 points: Elegantly styles with refined subtle flavors atypical of a Cali chard. Pretty notes of honey, hazelnut and pineapple fruit with good complexity on the tightly wound finish. Clearly possesses California-styled fruit but the texture has more in common with a fine Mersault. Should improve. (2795 views)
Tasted by stoll on 6/16/2006: I see what people mean by mineral. First night good but not great, alcohol very noticeable. Second night the heat had worn off and it took on a creamier feel, much better. (3023 views)
Tasted by Tubbs on 3/20/2006 & rated 88 points: I've heard many times this is a very Burgundian Cali' Chardonnay. I could see the connection but for me it fell short. I really did enjoy this however, not enough to buy more. (3116 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 2/11/2006 & rated 84 points: Stiff alcohol mars the great material here. The flavor of pure alcohol comes knocking on the palate and adds a wave of finishing warmth. Other than that this would be a great wine. There is an unbelievable level of minerality for a California wine, chalky in texture like a Puligny or Corton-Charlemagne. Flavors are pale and clean and would have a nice refreshing purity if the alcohol were saner. FWIW the label claims 14.5%. (3768 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 1/15/2006 & rated 90 points: Very crisp flavors not buttery and well balanced. (3314 views)
Tasted by jamiekutch on 8/7/2005: Great acid light feather fruit with light oak. Creamy notes not buttery though. Wonderful ager. (3415 views)
Tasted by Eric on 7/14/2005 & rated 89 points: Ripe with melon and some tropical notes, yet a really nice vein of acidity and minerality, no wood to be found, well done! While young and restrained, this has a very nice future ahead. I don't even begin to understand how James Lube could call this simple and give it 82 points, as it is a very attractive and elegant expression of Chardonnay. (3372 views)
Tasted by 97mjr on 4/23/2005: The Bounty Hunter Comes to Manhattan (Soho House, NYC, NY): [$54.95] apple, minerals, honey, butter; best of the whites, but I would expect better at this price level. (4221 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
