Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 462 notes)

Tasted by johnh1001 on 4/18/2024: Not sure what was up to with us tonight. Bottle was in great shape with base neck fill. A serious chemical note on the nose faded after about an hour. But the palate had a strange VA quality. (323 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 4/9/2024 flawed bottle: Unfortunately the have cork have fallen into the wine. (577 views)
Tasted by VINNICK on 4/9/2024 & rated 99 points: A wine that punches way above its weight…wow! Stacked up side by side with an 82 Mouton, 82 Latour, and an 82 Lafite, I have to say this was barely edged out by the Lafite and Latour. The Lafite carried an elegance that continued to shine as time went on, but the reality is that we were splitting hairs and for the price differential, this is hands down the best wine by a mile. A truly impressive performance. (486 views)
Tasted by CannataroCF on 3/30/2024 & rated 96 points: Wonderful, classic Pauillac … black currant and graphite. Majestic … worth it. (583 views)
Tasted by CannataroCF on 3/30/2024 & rated 95 points: Classic Lynch-Bages! Terrific — black currant and pencil. Definitely drink now (546 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 2/11/2024: Super Bowl LVIII 2024 (Alpharetta, GA): Tasted double blind: I voted this my #2 WOTN. However, I thought it was my wine ('82 PLC) due to its maturity and evolution. This had a utterly delicious Pauillac nose with tobacco and cedar as the dominant aromas. It is a more complete and balanced wine in comparison to the next wine ('82 PLC). Best I've tasted from the '82 Lynch Bages bottling. (1561 views)
Tasted by KHDXB on 1/28/2024 & rated 94 points: Wine opened up significantly after an hours decant and got better over the next hour. Red fruit and graphite on the nose with an earthy undertone of pepper. Not the most lively 82, but certainly reflects the greatness of the vintage. (1338 views)
Tasted by Guzzzler on 1/26/2024 & rated 92 points: 67 Pall Mall, winemakers event. I was lucky enough to share a bottle with the man who made it – Daniel Llose. The bottle was right out of Lynch Bages cellars and was hugely impressive - but not half as much as the man himself. Enjoyed some great stories about the making of this vintage.
The wine is everything you would expect. Still plenty of life. Fruit bordering on old brunello – dried fruit and flower petals. Wonderful, cedar, clove, nutmeg, and still plenty of tannic grip. Couldn’t have asked for more. (1348 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 12/30/2023 & rated 97 points: Fully saturated cork extracted intact with the Durand. Poured a clear rust colour with an orange sheen. Heavenly nose of cigar box, sous bois, cedar, graphite, warm sage and Grandad's basement. Liquid silk across the palate, fanning out to a glorious cedar-tinged finish. This improved considerably over the first 30 minutes or so where it thrilled for an hour before the fireworks slowly ebbed away losing some of the profound aromatics and becoming more astringent on the finish. I do not recommend decanting, rather PNP carefully off its fine sediment and enjoy the ride. My score reflects the first 90 minutes. (1487 views)
Tasted by Darwine on 12/24/2023 & rated 96 points: After 41 years this stood up to its heritage! What a delight! The nose took some time from earthy leather to some unique black fruit nuances. The flavors started out very dry and absent the fruit but soon opened upwards with delightful dark fruit and some amazing tannins leading to a nice finish of leather and dark fruit. Glad I got to have this wine! (1415 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 12/18/2023 & rated 95 points: Bought recently at auction, the fill was not great, but it beat expectations. It is a great example of a mature Bordeaux from one of the greatest vintages from the last century, but I do suspect that this does not have the structure for extended aging, and is overshadowed by the legendary 1989 and 1990. That said, it is magnificent. Displaying russet tones and an excellent viscosity, the nose is deeply aromatic with tertiary notes. Similarly the palate is fully integrated with silky notes of leather, and blackcurrant and plum with background hints of orange. It does drop off end palate and on the finish, where it is starting to show its age. (1403 views)
Tasted by HarveyManfrenjensenden on 11/28/2023 & rated 97 points: Ethereal experience. The cork was a bit of a debacle and so I feared the worst but this wine was a delight from the first pour and lasted for 3 hours in the glasses. No sign of decay. Amazing that the 1982 is still performing like this. (1369 views)
Tasted by joseduca on 11/23/2023 & rated 95 points: The 1982 Château Lynch-Bages is acclaimed for its balance and longevity, with a rich palate of black currant, tobacco, and earthy notes, leading to a full-bodied and opulent finish. It is near its peak and pairs well with hearty dishes, like last night Turducken for Thanksgiving.
This bottle was splendid and memorable: sophisticated, opened after 20 minutes and it offered notes of berries and earth. A magical bottle of wine, drink it now and over the next five years. (1260 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/18/2023 & rated 94 points: A splendid bottle of lunch bags, quite a bit softer, smoother and civilized than usual but no lack of intensity. Garnet with orange rim. Beautiful fragrance of mixed berries, almost sweet in their ripeness. Medium weight with only a hint of the typical Lynch Bages roughness. It seem to be at the far edge of its best drinking days, however. (1277 views)
Tasted by VINNICK on 11/11/2023 & rated 97 points: Everything is in place here. WOTN against a 70 Latour, 82 Trot, and 91 Maya. Cigar, leather, and the quintessential LB pencil shavings. Tannins are fully resolved. Spectacular. (1268 views)
Tasted by David Harper on 10/29/2023 & rated 97 points: I’m not good with the lingo on tasting notes, let me just say it is PFG. All I hoped for in a 41 year old second growth. Has a bit longer but I doubt it will get better. (1307 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 10/24/2023 flawed bottle: Not a great bottle with lowish fill. Oxidized. (1309 views)
Tasted by devraj on 10/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Still a youthful looking dark ruby with hint of slight bricking, cassis, dark plums, pencil lead, tobacco and forest floor. The palate is so silky showing sweet and refined dark red fruits (veering towards more riper plum), telltale tobacco and pencil lead, medium acidity, and a long detailed finish with baking spice and forest floor. Superb. (1081 views)
Tasted by Romol on 9/28/2023 flawed bottle: Flawed. Recently purchased bottle. Although the level of the bottle looked good, the cork was wet to the top. What a shame. (1223 views)
Tasted by Titusandronicus on 8/20/2023 & rated 94 points: Enjoyed (as part of a fabulous meal) with three other ‘82s - the Mouton, Margaux and Leoville Las Cases. I could not pick a winner (nor could most of us) because they were all superb. The LB was arguably slightly less complex and structured but, to my surprise (and others’), it had arguably the ripest, most gorgeous fruit - and after 41 years , that was impressive. (1567 views)
Tasted by jviz on 8/11/2023 & rated 96 points: A beautiful bottle purchased on futures and held until the present day. It was popped and poured, dumped into the decanter for sediment and followed over about three hours.

Transparent ruby in the glass with surprisingly little bricking, the wine opens very concentrated and pasty with wells of pen ink and deep blackcurrant fruit. It carries some of the Signature hallmarks of the vintage, even more so than the Château, but was so similar to the 89, that if I left the room and the glasses were switched, it might be challenging to discern the difference. Clearly cut from the same beautiful cloth there is an abundance of fruit (a la Mouton) and hints of tobacco (á PLL) and not he other way around. Best enjoyed around celler temperature with about 45 minutes of air.

In my mind this edged the 89 just by a hair today (1625 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 8/3/2023: 1982 Bordeaux theme, Flight 2 of two Lynch, AO’s bottle, cork completely soaked, this nose was better at the start, a beauty, smooth, complex & finesse, the 2 Lynch were my favourites after the Haut Brion (1490 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 8/3/2023: 1982 Bordeaux theme, Flight 2 of two Lynch Bages, KC’s bottle, soaked cork, v similar to AO’s bottle but tighter nose at start, after 1.5 hrs similar to the other Lynch, lovely & regal (1432 views)
Tasted by Moonie on 3/5/2023 & rated 95 points: Perfect after a two-hour decant. Even took on more weight throughout a two-hour dinner. All an old Bordeaux should be with time remaining. (2937 views)
Tasted by Barsacpinci on 2/1/2023: Had plum and tar on the nose. Interesting. A little thin on mid palate compared to GPL (2769 views)
Tasted by Hemingway on 2/1/2023 & rated 98 points: Hard to imagine a better wine. Took it to Nick & Stef's Steakhouse, decanted for a bit before tasting. The most powerful nose of dank fruit and forest floor, a bit of maybe mushrooms. The flavors mimicked the nose with a bit of plum and tobacco. Such a wonderfully smooth and complex wine with a bit of a tannic bite left. Layers upon layers of deliciousness. Long finish. Really something else. Blessed to have one more bottle left. (2660 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 1/17/2023 & rated 94 points: From a pristine source that had cellared it since release, this is just gorgeous, classic warm vintage Bordeaux at its finest. Medium ruby with light bricking. Aromas are of violets, gravel, celery seed, cassis, plum, black cherry, and tobacco leaf. The palate is super silky entering on cassis and plum. Acid is medium and tannin is medium minus. Loads of violets, plum and gravel round out the finish. All in all this is incredibly fresh, balancing the abundant, yet optimally ripe fruit against lovely secondary notes. Not much in the way of tertiary notes on this bottle. Everything about this experience belies the true age of this wine. If tasted blind I expect I'd guess 96, 99, 01 or 04 as this is just in wonderful condition with a long life ahead of it.  Tasted by Vintage1961 on 1/6/2023 & rated 97 points: Bought at auction $200AUD. Capsule badly damaged and exposing cork which was successfully removed (almost in one piece) but saturated. Level down to mid shoulder.
Lovely healthy red hue with some minor bricking to side. Nose was soft, delicate at first, full of secondary nuances, dried herb, leather, flowers, some fruit compote, faint lilac, sweet faint pepper, very clean and in typical aged bordeaux spectrum.
Palate was pure velvet. Everything melted and integrated all the way to back palate. It coats the tongue in cloak of luxury and the finish is very satisfying. Becoming more complex with more air.
This was delicious. Where to now? This showed really well for 40 years and is in prime drinking window. (2908 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Beautiful nose of tertiary smoky cedar, toasted herbs, dried plum and some funk notes. Resolved palate has plenty of refined, buoyant fruit. Tasty and this bottle is now at the tail end of its peak drinking window. (2327 views)
Tasted by the player on 12/7/2022 & rated 96 points: Viscous and dense ruby red, hardly any bricking, a delight to look at as much as it is to smell and taste. Fully soaked cork, pristine bottle. Upon first sip, felt very evolved but lacked balance. Nothing that 90 minutes in the decanter could not fix. Drank over the next 90 minutes. Very complex nose of perfumed cassis, berries, a classical well aged 82 which fully justifies why I am so partial to this vintage and make parallels with the 2009. Very hedonistic, tertiary notes of blackberries, sweet spices, cigar box, even plums. On the palate extremely well structured and balanced, medium bodied with some punch, good acidity mid palate with perfumed fruit dominating, and a long sweet black fruited finish with tannins fully coated and super fine. One of the best left bank 82s I have had recently. (1927 views)
Tasted by jvphoto on 12/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Still fresh for 40 year old wine from dark red fruit over some spice and saddle.

Tasted by lebutor143 on 11/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Ce vin est incroyable Il tient encore la route après 40 ans. Long en bouche, cuir prune encore un peu boisé et même un peu astringent. Décanté 30 minutes avant. Couleur grenat intense. (1728 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 11/11/2022 & rated 94 points: 1982 Bordeaux (Jason's house): Decanted about 45 minutes, drank a good-sized glass over 3 hours. Lovely red to black fruit, graphite and tobacco. Cedar, some plum, the finish ends slightly sour. (1996 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 11/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Wine weekend in the Twin Cities; 11/10/2022-11/12/2022 (Where the frosty air is refreshing.. kind of): N: Aged plums, almost a sweet port nose and overly damp earth.

P: Chocolate covered plums, similar earth from nose and an elegant but firm spice.

No elbows poking out on this one but was also a bit underwhelming for me for some reason.. thinking it might've been the plum notes. (2370 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 11/10/2022 & rated 94 points: Guys Night - 1982 Bordeaux! (Jason's House): I am a fan of Lynch Bages, except they typically take forever to age, boy do they show pretty well when they get there! This bottle was no exception! Splash double decanted for sediment. Nose was somewhat floral with some lilac notes and some dark fruit notes, and plenty of graphite, leather and earthy notes. Palate still showed fading fruit, but enough there to satisfy me (and I need fruit in a wine). Tertiary notes followed the nose with the added notes of sweet tobacco and hints of charcoal. A really nice, sophisticated wine that was paired with a 1982 Montrose, and held its own! This went well with a veal saltimbocca! Easy 94 for me! (1966 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Guy's Night: 1982 Bordeaux -- One for the Books (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Saturated Very dark red/purple color. Splash double decanted for sediment before leaving, then decanted for about an hour prior to serving. The nose is the star here, really big damp earth and mossy notes, tar, black cherry, tobacco leaf, char, and then the pencil comes through loud and clear. The palate is also very earthy, loam, deep and dense with some smoke, sappy blackberry, plum, charcoal, and a little vegetal undertone, pencil, full bodied, and showing round tannins. Very good, youthful in a sense, still may develop a bit further. (1531 views)

Tasted by mariow on 4/17/2022 & rated 97 points: a perfect bottle, bottom neck, cork came out easily; made already a good impression right after opening, after two hours decided to decant for 30 minutes.
subtle nose of red fruit, maybe sour cherry; the first sip was a wowww on the palate, an amazing combination of intensity and mildness; vivid, broad, good structure with very long finish; mild exotic fruit, intense berry juice. had it with easter diner; almost felt like resurrection. 97+ (2701 views)
Tasted by NewFrenchClaret on 4/15/2022 & rated 95 points: Almost a pop and pour, which turned out to be about right.

Quite tertiary, as a lot of the '82s seem to be now. They seem to be entering their geriatric period earlier than some surrounding vintages. However the detail in this wine was off the charts. Less hedonistic than some '82s (which I think is a good thing) and turns into a more intellectual experience.

Ever changing as a great claret should be, but retained its body and structure throughout. Tannins were a little dry at first but subsided quickly.

This is in a wonderful place at the moment. Don't hold it any longer. (2419 views)

Tasted by Moonie on 4/9/2022 & rated 98 points: An absolutely stellar showing for this wine after a two hour decant. This bottle could have easily taken on the other 82s I've had the pleasure of drinking over the past number of years, including Pichon Lalande, Mouton and La Mission. It was strangely "delicate." Everything was soft...the lovely Pauillac fruit as well as the tannins, but it had the depth and structure to pair perfectly with a New York strip at Capital Grill in Naples. (1934 views)

Third Flight - Lynch Bages, Pichon Lalande, La Tour Haut Brion, Haut Brion

The Lynch Bages as noted in prior TNs is dark fruited with cedar and earth notes. Excellent balance, fine tannins, lovely texture and persistent finish. Drinking very well indeed (2175 views)
Tasted by adnorthup on 2/5/2022: Matt’s 40th Party (Fallsington, PA): decanted off sediment an hour before serving. Perfect aged claret, right at Peak, currant, earth, tobacco, so smooth. Incredible (2436 views)
Tasted by Hendmo on 1/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Still powerful and full bodied, this was full of rich blackcurrant, smoke and tobacco. Drank alongside a 1985 Mouton which was more subtle and complex by comparison, but this was still a a very fine bottle of wine and a classic Pauilllac on form. (2643 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 1/1/2022 & rated 96 points: semiblind, I knew the vintage, mid-top shoulder filling

It was typical Pauillac, I guessed right. Still not over his peak, decanted for half an hour and getting better with aeration. Dark colour, still some black currant notes, more secondary and tertiary aromas. Making fun to drink it. The best LB together with 89 in the last 40 years. 96 (2848 views)

Tasted by quinelawine on 12/19/2021 & rated 93 points: Tastes really well amd clearly a superior wine which hits immediately. Medium colour , ruby hue , decent clarity . Moderate aromas . Senses touched by blackberry , tobacco and a hint of lavender . Good balance with moderate intensity . Odd one of 7 I have so hopefully rest are as good . There are better 82s out there I’m sure but this really didn’t disappoint . Not sure it feels end of life , some longevity yet !! 2 hr single decant (2105 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/13/2021 & rated 95 points: Probably completely developed, here you find a nose packed with tobacco, cigar box, green leafy herbs, cedar, smoke and currants galore. Full-bodied, regal, but slightly rustic, with layers of fruits, spice, herbs and tobacco leaf, this is classic Left Bank Bordeaux at its best. (3583 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Hugh’s bottle, purchased on release. A softer, gentler and more elegant expression of Lynch Bages, without the coarseness it sometimes has. Deeply pleasing aromatic display of aged black fruit and smoke. Medium weight on the palate, exits gradually but memorably. Another taster opined the bouquet had vanished after the first hour but there was no more left in the bottle for me to confirm or dispute. Could the ‘82 be at the end of its prime drinking window?  Tasted by englishman's claret on 9/11/2021 & rated 95 points: This bottle seemed to be about a 90th percentile example of the 1982 Lynch Bages, showing a virile blackberry, cassis, truffled nose with subtle pencil accents. This was also mercifully a clean example. Beautiful heft in the mouthy and persistence on the finish, though this misses just a touch of delineation that today’s wines possess fully. (3705 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/10/2021: Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): In the younger crowd this was my wine and have now had back to back really great experiences with it (although always different it seems).  Tasted by englishman's claret on 6/13/2021 & rated 93 points: The 82 Lynch-Bages remains somewhat chameleon-like, occasionally Mouton-like in its lavishly intense blueberry, lavender, and pencil, sometimes closed and unyielding. 6 bottles from the same source (single owner, home cellar, saturated corks, neck fills) showed yet another profile, expansive yet mellow, a bit rustic and horsey with redcurrant, pencil, truffle, and leather. Very good if without profundity of the best bottles. (3429 views)

Tasted by oldwines on 5/1/2021 & rated 96 points: Jim and Stacy's 20th Wedding Anniversary (New Jersey, USA): Double decanted at 1:30pm, taken to an event and tasted over the evening. Definite brett but pleasantly so. Saddle leather, cedar, tobacco, plum and sous bois layer the nose and palate with a long slightly tart, black cherry and eucalyptus finish. Excellent mature Bordeaux. Later in evening with several hours more of air in the uncorked bottle and the glass this blew off all the brett and got rounder, silky and more fruited, especially black plum and black cherry. It took quite a while but it was well worth the wait! Originally scored 94 —> 96 (3256 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 4/2/2021 & rated 96 points: The last time I tried this (not my bottle) was next to an 82 Cheval Blanc and an 82 LMHB, and it delivered great drinking even if it fell a little short of those other two, as it drank hedonistic without the complexity.

Tonight it was even better. I can’t say whether that’s because it came from a different source, because there was no “competition”, or it simply has more to give. Blackberry, dark cherry and strawberry fruits mix with dark chocolate and tobacco in an energetic and full flavored wine that has no hard edges. I might restock as this was my last bottle (3140 views)

This bottle was serve next to the Unico 2010, please see previusly note, it had upper shoulder level, it had leaked a bit but no impact on the taste, third bottle, all opended within 3 years, and like the other two it was stunning .. . from start to finish in harmony, very seductive, toasted fruit, cassis, still quite dark at almost 40th' seemed younger in the nose than taste, still very good bit for the age, I very most like the almost chewy bouquet, it's a the velvety stylish wine and classic 1982, compared to the 1985 Lynch which also is great , the 1982 just have an extra gear, specially in Pauillac & Pomerol, I rate this a bit higher than the previusly bottle because it was on level with the stunning Unico 2010 next and did not loose any of it's magic over the 2 hours. If well stored it can be enjoy' for many many years. I had the chance to drink the 1945 Lynch Bages 15 years ago and in texture it' reminded of the 1982!

Nose was a little reticent initially but opened after 30 minutes in the glass to reveal cassis and cedar notes. Dark fruited palate with fine tannins, good balance, lovely mouthfeel. That being said the mid palate was missing and this bottle was a little blocky which I attribute to not giving this the three hours in the decanter it deserved. (2914 views)

Tasted by Cailles on 7/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Aged Bordeaux Gems (with Unico/Heitz MV in the mix): Magnum. Tasted double blind. This screamed Pauillac from the get-go with it’s masculine minerality, tobacco and burnt sugar notes. While it is a great wine, this is years away from its peak, especially out of this format. It doesn’t have the complexity or laser-focus of the legendary 1989 but is definitely a treat to drink. In this all blind flight, it was clearly better than the Mouton 82 (not the best bottle out there) but got clearly outshined by the legendary Pichon Lalande 82. 94 today, with some upside potential.

TN: Tobacco, bay leaves, crushed stone at the centre, dark fruit underneath on the nose. Intense and precise but only semi-inviting, missing a bit of charm. More open and layered on the palate with lots of dark forest fruit, tobacco, hints of burnt sugar, herbal notes and rocks. Thanks to a better sweetness and the creamy texture its more balanced and harmonious on the palate. Very good structural frame which will need further time to mellow.

Decanting: Double decanted only. Would have been better with 5-6 hours in the decanter. (3777 views)

Tasted by sirpat00 on 6/27/2020 & rated 97 points: Magnum rarities tasting (Near Basel): This was part of a rarity old wine tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. All (almost) bottles were from magnum and double-decanted. The line-ups was dominated by aged Bordeaux, but also included two vintages of Unico and one from Martha's Vineyard. The undisputed winners were Pichon Lalande 82 and Lynch Bages 82. The most memorable, however, was the Pontet Canet 29 and St Croix Dumonts 21. The Unico (60, 65) were underwhelming as was – once again for me – Mouton 82.

Tasting note:
Tasted blind, double decanted, magnum. Sweet, red berry type of fruit showing strawberry and red cherry complemented by fresh herbal aromatics and sweet spices. Beautifully layered nose followed by a fresh, juicy palate with all components in perfect harmony. A strong runner-up in this old wine tasting only bested by Pichon Lalande from the same vintage.  Tasted by DrinkBordeaux on 3/28/2019 & rated 95 points: One of the strongest Bordeaux wines from 1982. It's full of classic Pauillac aromas of black currant, graphite, and cedar, and there's also some anise and herbal notes as well.  Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/19/2019 & rated 95 points: If you have wondered what Lynch Bages tastes like at full-maturity, find a bottle of the 1982! This stunner rocks as soon as the wine greets your glass. The cedar, tobacco leaf, cigar box, forest floor, pepper, herbs and cassis in the nose is classic, aged Pauillac. Full-bodied, with density, length, character and the combination of bright red berries, herbs, earth and peppery, green, forest leaf on the palate, every sip tastes and feels great. There is no hurry to drink this, but I do not see any upside to holding it longer. Drink this now and over the next 15-20 years, and enjoy the ride! (5495 views)

Tasted by acyso on 6/20/2018 & rated 95 points: Cappellano and Lynch (Chicago, IL): It's a massive beast, showing that classic bordelais pencil lead, alongside a generous amount of earthiness. There's a lot of stuffing here but plenty of fruit to go with it. The palate is intense and jam-packed with stuffing, and it takes a fair bit of effort to unwind it all. But despite all of this material, there's an understated modesty to this wine that makes it even more attractive. None of this is in your face, nor does it need to be dolled up or prettified. It's just an honest, correct, and great Bordeaux. (6047 views)

Good but not outstanding. The 1983 Pichon Lalande trumped it by a big margin. Light nose developed during meal, maybe some bottle variation, but thought it could have and should have sung better. Excellent deep ruby color, no orange. Massive aroma of black tar and dirt. On the palate, a tremendous core of ripe fruit, black licorice and truffle. Terrific complexity and endlessly intriguing, even thrilling. Beefy yet somehow no lack of finesse given its fine balance. First growth quality and a relative bargain. (5789 views)

Tasted by englishman's claret on 3/18/2018 & rated 94 points: The 82 Lynch is so coquettish - will it charm? Will it refuse to show anything at all? Will it peak early and fade or will it keep building? I've seen it do all of these things. So we followed this fairly closely and this bottle built and built over the course of the evening. The quietest nose of the 3 (85, 82, 61), this eventually revealed a typically dark-fruited Lynch fruit profile with smoky and oaky notes. Lots of richness here. When will this finally arrive at its undeniable peak? Promising, though. (4221 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 3/17/2018 & rated 95 points: Nose: Densely coiled for much of the night, but at its best the nose gave dark cherry, blackberry, smoke, cigar ash, green tobacco/herb and cedary notes. Touches of espresso and fig as well. Palate: There is an textural quality to the 82 that separates it. Densely layered dark fruit, cherry, cedar, tobacco, loamy earth, and anise. Finish: Structured still and tannin is ripe, but tough at times.

This bottle just builds over hours in the decanter. A beguiling wine. Occasionally a powerhouse, occasionally closed, and occasionally a great one is like this. May still need years. Potential for a long lived Lynch. (3704 views)

Awesome that a 35 yr old wine still has plenty going for it. Nose give hints of vegetal elements, cigar box (tobacco and cedar), pencil lead, wet earth.
Palate although not as promising as the nose is still lively. The tannins are well integrated, red fruit is apparent but I suspect it has diminished with age, hence although there is life left in the wine, it is past peak. (3641 views)

Drinking beautifully now, and it's right up there with the Gruaud Larose in terms of delivering a pitch-perfect 1982 BDX experience for me. Outstanding wine. (5581 views)
Tasted by TomFF on 8/7/2017: Deep purple hues solid color to edge.
Nose evolves with volatile sensations quickly dissipating, forest, tobacco and leather notes early and mineral, granite and hint of floral late.
Complex smooth taste with dark berry and tannins present but smooth. Tastes like there is still life left in this bottle but probably best to drink now. Pregnancy had negatively affected my daughter's ability to enjoy red wines and this bottle was the first pleasurable glass she has tasted since before her child was born.
The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), blackberry, forest floor, mineral and stoniness. The body is medium/full. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (5665 views)

Possibly "better" than Leoville Poyferre in terms of superior concentration and more youthful tannin. Here the "Poor Man's Mouton" is turned on its head and one could say that Mouton is the "Rich Man's Lynch Bages". The aromas are sheer perfume, all in focus, crisp and fresh, with a youthful palate that puts some more recent vintages that are on faster aging tracks to shame. Bravo! (6733 views)
Tasted by TheThirstyYau on 12/16/2016 & rated 96 points: Good fill level, very delicate brittle cork. On open, a little closed but nose still fragrant. After a 2 hour decant was opening up beautifully. On the palate, complex multi layered textured (drunk together with an 82 Beychevelle, and the fresh fruit and palate complexity really stood out). Amazing fresh fruit, red fruits, quite primary still, and great length, tannin and structure. Still has years ahead of it. One of those wines which keeps you coming back. For me, good bordeaux doesn't get better than this, outstanding. Wine of night ahead of 82 beychevelle. (4583 views)

Tasted by William Kelley on 12/3/2016 & rated 94 points: An extraordinarily unctuous, textural wine, the 1982 Lynch Bages offers up an oddly reticent bouquet of jammy cassis, blackberry, graphite and oyster shell. But on the palate this wine is delicious, with unusual levels of glycerin and textural richness that are unusual a Medoc. Its layers of fruit and long finish are utterly seductive, though its personality is rather foursquare and rustic. The tannins are largely melted and this is drinking very well today. (6132 views)

Velvety and and ripe with outstanding balance and nuanced black toasty spices. Sexy, elegant, and divine. A seamless wine form beginning to end. Tannins and acidity have all but disappeared. The nose is still very lovely, aromas of tobacco, dirt, leather, and mushrooms. Velvety, soft mouth feel. Earthy flavors are prominent. Some dark fruit, smooth finish but short. Still a very nice complex wine. This wine should be drank in the next year if you have a bottle. Drinking window is closing. (6050 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 8/22/2015: Better than the last bottle. Rested over 3 months before drinking. Briefly exciting; an hour into the decant it showed such beautiful crystalline black, blue, and purple fruits with lashings of cedar, pencil, mineral, and a touch of mint. But then it really slid downhill; couldn't sustain the heights. Remained ripe, round, correct in a fat 1982 kind of way but eventually uninteresting. Hm. 96ish at peak but, low 90s the rest of the night - so not much point in tacking a score onto this. (6064 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 8/21/2015: Nose: Gorgeous nose, and best part of this wine tonight. Blackberry, Cherry Liquor, Tobacco, and some herbal/burnt ember notes. So polished with great glossy edges of Red/Black Fruit. Palate: Rounded mouth feel with black/red fruit and some mint. A good earth component as well. However there is not much complexity, and it seem to lack the depth I expected. Finish: Blackberry, Tannin and some acidity.

After a rather so/so bottle of this over the winter Marc wanted another crack at 82 Lynch. Although better, I am still scratching my head about when the big score might show up for this wine.

Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 5/21/2015 & rated 97 points: Det här vinet visar verkligen hur exceptionell årgång 1982 var i Bordeaux.
Talk about fine claret.
Lovely stable, dust, pencil lead and shavings, cedar wood, cigar box, leather, animal, smoke, forest floor, mushrooms, graphite, wet gravel and fine red cassis with some blackberries.
Stunning.
Palate is developed and silky, with good length, and excellent balance.
Acid and wonderful ripe cassis, dust and tobacco leafs with a touch of herbs.
Ripe and fine, with a long and complex layered finish.
Excellent.
Will easily be a vigorous wine for at least another decade, since the material in this fine wine is still very much alive.

From the depth of the nose, the richness of this wine is already evident. Dark and brooding at first, then opening up and brightening noticeably with aeration, this wine is really at a wonderful stage of its life. The rich layers of cassis fruit have a firm but velvety texture, thanks in no small part to the subtly exquisite tannins that time the master craftsman has spent over three decades refining. Happily, Mr. Time seems in no big hurry to finish the job -- this wine has at least another decade of evolution ahead. (5551 views)

Very sweet chewy tannins and a polished, but not over done mouthfeel. Finish: Dark fruit, leather and coffee notes.

This eventually showed some of the complexity that is in reserve, but you couldn't help but want more Pauillac style here. Tight perhaps? Bad timing? Thanks to Englishman's Claret for sharing.

Tasted by ilee on 10/11/2014 & rated 92 points: This was part of a box that just came in from the UK, and looking at the upper shoulder fill, I had some misgivings. The cork came out easily, and looked to have been soaked right through at some point in time. After wiping off the residue, I poured it out gently. Ruby with a brownish hue, the wine looked distinctly evolved. The nose had a faint trace of oxidation, but otherwise it was fine. In fact it was very nice, still fruity, just very evolved. Medium bodied with almost no trace of alcohol or tannin, this genteel old wine came through some poor storage conditions with enough fruit and mineral character to provide some very enjoyable drinking. My only complaint is there wasn't a lot of complexity, but hey it could have been a lot worse! (6127 views)

Elegant, not a bruiser. Hints of green pepper in the beginning but turned into beautiful dark fruits shortly. This bottle seems to lack a bit of intensity though, or it needs more time to open up?  Tasted by godx on 8/30/2014: Consistent with previous notes: classic left bank nose with a silky palate and clean profile.  Tasted by ilee on 5/3/2014 & rated 94 points: Dinner at Jada's (Chez Jada): Poured just after the 1986 Palmer, the '82 LB came across as more reserved and subdued (despite being decanted 2 hours earlier). But there's no mistaking the deep, dense Pauillac dark berries/cassis nose. Velvety texture with a firm tannic structure, I think this wine can easily improve for another 10 years; the fruit certainly seems in no hurry to go anywhere. Very nice (but have to agree with VK -- we should have served this before the '86 Palmer) (6457 views)

The extended family visit for Christmas lunch was cancelled so I decided to upgrade drinking and opened a bottle of 1982 Lynch Bages. Quite mature now but still very much alive with those incredible lead pencil and graphite flavors of the vineyard showing prominently. Silky smooth on the tongue and building to a still structured finish with a fine mineral dust that adds complexity and regal character.

The nose seemed a bit off putting and definitely was out of sync with the good palate presence of this wine. Colour was garnet red all the way to the edge. No brown evident at all, remarkable at 30 years of age, and hinted at a good bottle. And it was. Nose was classic aged Bordeaux but very elegantly packaged. Smoke, leather, cassis but no funk or farmyard evident. Palate was equally impressive. Again, lots of smoke and cassis but with some tertiary coffee notes too. Very fresh still and the tannins were completely integrated with not a single harsh edge. It was all exceptionally well integrated and with a good, but not magical, finish.
The bottle proves the quality of the 82 vintage and the value that Lynch-Bages used to provide. This was top-notch Claret well stored and perfectly aged and a delight to drink. It didn't match the power or length of a first growth from the same vintage but it did have some Lafite elegance and complexity. A very good bottle indeed.

The high- intensity nose showed black cherries, plum, gravel, vanilla, and led pencil. As one would expect from the foregoing, This wine was still on the young side but drinking well. Like most '82s, it is rich and ripe with lovely rounded tannin and excellent length. This will continue to gain complexity for another decade or two. The 70 was classic, and its impossible not to love this wine. Even perfect provenance bottles are showing their age, so time to put these in rotation if you have some. Picked #2 by the group, with one #1 vote.
The 82 started slow, but in the end was perfect LB, and is at its drinking peak. Groups #1.
The 89 was great, and drank exactly like this wine typically does. Thicker, richer, less silky than the 70 and even the 82. A great drink, but not yet showing the classy maturity that the 70 and 82 are. Groups #3.

Tasted by Tad GW on 9/4/2011 & rated 96 points: One of 3 1982 Bordeaux consumed on this evening with cassoulet (the others being a Certain de May and a La Dominique) this bottle married best with the duck confit in and accompanying the food. This was the youngest and freshest of the three wines and I preferred it althought I thought the La Dominique paired a little better with the food. This was the richest, roundest most hedonistic of the three wines, with the tannins having melted into the fruit. The color and development of the wine were not as advanced at the other two. Only the first quarter of the cork was stained red by the wine unlike the other two whose cork was stained from tip to tail.

The nose was the most reticent of the three wines but grew slowly and inexorably with lots of complexity but promising even more as it continues to develop in the coming years. Cedar, rum laced spicecake, black currants and smoke are the predominant scents I noted. The drink had a lot of presence up front with a velvety mouthfeel and a long lasting finish that continued to change and give pleasure. The main tastes are the black currant concentrate and ripe black cherries and Italian plums.. This is drinking really well right now but I think it has years of life ahead of it still. But with such a hedonistic drink, why wait?

Tasted by kenv on 5/26/2011 & rated 94 points: WCC Blind Rhone Varietals from Around the World (Salty's Pub, Clifton Park, NY): [DD at 3pm.] Way out of place at this tasting. A guy in our group had brought the 1982 Grand Puy Lacoste to a Lynch Bages vertical by mistake. He felt compelled to bring it this time to make up for his horrible crime (though the 82 GPL had been my WOTN last time ;). Anyway, this is a terrific bottle of Bordeaux which has drunk well its whole life and I'm sure will continue to for at least another decade. Still tannic, but the tannins are so sweet. Just a gorgeous wine, but an odd way to start a Rhone tasting. (12534 views)

Tasted by dbkitc on 2/15/2011 & rated 90 points: Almost the contradictory experience to it's course-mate. This wine lives by reputation. Take the ’82 label out of the equation, what you have is a good – getting close to the end of its life – Pauillac that is pleasing but in no way memorable. Touch of amber on the rim, the nose is classic berry and meat mixed with secondary nuance. Finer than the bottle tasted over the holidays. Savory, but falls away far to quickly to be a great wine.  Tasted by Blair Curtis on 1/13/2011 & rated 95 points: Wonderful wine! Deep nose. Excellent in the mouth showcasing lovely balance and a silky mouthfeel. Fantastic wine with poise and vigor. Best of the night in an 8-vintage vertical of L-B from 80s and 90s. (12320 views)
Tasted by swyang on 1/2/2011 & rated 96 points: A great wine, great bottle at its best. Upon opening a whiff of smoke, foggy, barn yardy and really not that promising. Yet the cork was rather clean, considering its age so we were convinced that it would come around.
One hour in the decanter was enough to make it come to live and this wine was by far one of the most beautiful, poetic Bordeaux I had in a very long time. Violet, red brick color. the nose was lavender, autumn leaves, dried dark berries, and very slightly smoky. On the palate, oh beautiful texture of medium body, gliding on the palate effortlessly as if it were a hang glider showing us the past years. Stunning balance of left over fruits, autumn leaves, leather, slightly saline as well. But the way this was singing and dancing on the palate was really fantastic. At the very peak, or even just starting its own graceful fall. (12132 views)
Tasted by godx on 12/30/2010 & rated 93 points: Opened 3 hours prior to serving. Medium ruby core with a brownish/orange hue throughout. Beautiful nose—classic left bank nose of cedar, ripe red fruits and spice. Softer entry with sweeter red fruits, black currants and spice. Firmer on the finish with a big dose of black currants. This bottle opened up for several hours in the glasses and while there is more maturity showing on the palate then the nose, there is no sign of this declining anytime soon. Can fully be enjoyed now or held another 5-10 years. Outstanding. (11933 views)

Tasted by Kirk Grant on 12/22/2010 & rated 92 points: End of the year with the "Usual Suspects" (Sips Restaurant in Southwest Harbor, ME): Color: Ruby with bricking at the rim

Smell: Earth, graphite, red and dark fruits, tobacco, leather, and hints of cedar.

Taste: Dried red fruits, leather, bloody meat, and a bit of dusty mineral notes at the tail end.

Overall: A wonderful wine, just not as complete and in balance as the last bottle I had. Once again, I think this could/should have been decanted better...but despite this...it still was wonderful! (11389 views)

Taste: A melange of red fruits, earth, black currant, and a faint hint of clove that seamlessly intertwined with one another along a 45+ second finish that made it difficult to restrain from taking another sip.

Overall: This was in a wonderful spot, and despite the saturated cork performed far beyond my expectations. The tannins while present were well integrated and soft now. There was a harmony in this wine that seemed to reach out and grab everyone at the table. (11054 views)

I have been unfortunate in 82 Mouton which I might regard as the pauper's Lynch Bages. Decanted 2 hours. Hard sediment. Huge impact of fruit.  Tasted by KeithAkers on 12/8/2008 & rated 94 points: Lynch Bages Vertical 1961-2005 (Sweets and Savories, Chicago IL): nose: amazing nose with great balance that opens up with rich tones of herbs, coffee beans, sweet red cherries, cedar box, asian spices, and undertones of earth. Supremely balanced that just slowly permeates out of the glass and fills it up and explodes at the same time

taste: Great feel and texture with purely defined tones of sweet cherries, leather, pencil lead, cranberries, roasted coffee beans, and asian spice tones. Very complex with secondary flavors just starting to fully emerge, but there is definitely a young feel to this at the same time

overall: This wine is just starting to enter its apex and can easily hold for a good while. Medium acidity and fine grained tannins are still very present to give it some backbone and the flavors, while not fully primary, have an adolescant verve to them. This is a wine that is stunning, subtle, and yet explosive all at the same time. A beautiful wine that is really in the ascendency right now (11464 views)

Tasted by Claudio161 on 12/8/2008 & rated 93 points: Lynch Bages Vertical Focused on Parker 91+ Point Reds (Sweets and Savories. Fullerton near Ashland. Chicago. IL): Sight: dark garnet red wine of medium viscosity

Nose: Lush and rich. Imparts the impression of total elegance. Slightly sweeter notes than the '61 or the '70. Dark berry symphony with a special focus on cassis. Spice house herbal notes and rinsed quartz rocks.

Palate: Lush and exuding luxury. Plenty of leather saddle, vanillins/oak, cassis. A mouth-coating lush feeling while also being balanced in acids and tannins. Awesome from attack with a nice lengthy finish.

Overall: All around amazing Bordeaux wine. Those who have more will not be disappointed. Minor notes of heat on the finish. 93 points. (11609 views)

Tasted by Rupert on 10/10/2006 & rated 94 points: Lynch Bages vertical (Washington Hotel, London): Another shy nose, but on the palate, really full and ripe, lots of sweet cedariness, long and gorgerous [I seeemd to a lot more enthusiastic about this than others present] (10668 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 7/7/2006: Dinner at Jeff and Marya Samuelson's: Another great wine. This is extremely focused and stern. The nose is a fairly simple but intense mix of dark fruit and lead pencil. In the mouth this is structured but showing ripe fruit with tobacco notes. This very well balanced and still extremely tannic. The finish lingers. An extremely nice wine that still has many years of life ahead of it. (11330 views)

Geur is zeer aanwezig en prachtig. mooie kersen, cassis met cederhout, sigarenkist. iets animaals, leer tonen.Prachtige complexe geuren. Smaak is mooi zacht met prachtige zuren. Tannines zijn helemaal in de wijn opgenomen.Mooie concentratie en voldoende grip.Afdronk is mooi lang. Wijn oogt nog heel fief en kan nog wel even mee. Bordeaux op zijn top. (10772 views)
Tasted by bdenuyl on 4/14/2006 & rated 94 points: A little musty on the start, but after an hour it had blown off and just kept getting better. Very mature, with no tannin it was a classic bordeaux and very good. It didn’t have as much structure as the ’89, so you may be better served buying the ’89. (6141 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 3/12/2006 & rated 96 points: Our dinner with Cilantro (Chez nous): Quintessential Pauillac, just doesn't get much better than this. At the start, cork was seeped clear through and there was a whiff of barnyard, but after decanting, this just kept going on an on. Beautiful color with hardly any brickings. The nose came alive with cassis, leather, and faint cedar. Great mouthfeel with balance and power, long finish. Definitely at its prime (11760 views)

Tasted February 27, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of kirsch, eucalyptus and leather with some secondary aromas of mocha and expresso. Flavors of black cherries and earth up front with some secondary flavors of mocha and expresso. Very good wine. Drink over the short term. (11636 views)

Tasted by amred on 1/1/2006 & rated 98 points: Last bottle New Year's Eve with Quail/wine sauce: It was spectacular, not much to add to several recent notes. A perfect aged Bordeaux, and at least ours is at the perfect time to drink. The classic nose, not to be mistaken with any other wine: lead pencil, a bit of leather/tobacco, color was indeed garnet, but with no hint of brick. Smooth seamlessly-integrated tannins, fruit very much still in evident, a remarkably balanced wine. Not only are american reds not made this way, I'm not sure Bordeauxs are still being made this way...to really be a a peak 20-25 years later. Wish I had more, much more. (11352 views)
Tasted by jrlitt on 12/31/2005 & rated 92 points: Drank this on New Year Even alongside the 1985. The fruit seemed to fade very quickly. Not bad, but not nearly as good as the '85. Maybe the bottle was off a little. (10802 views)
Tasted by Alohawino on 12/16/2005 & rated 100 points: ruby red, vibrant and mysterious. sipped minutes after decanting, it was closed, amd yet agrfessively showed its strength with a rich and forboding nose. Powerful. through the evening, it softened, mellowed, and displayed wonderful balance, and a great finish. teasingly soft and supple, with hints of leather and cloves, but warm, soft cherries and black currants added to a very round experience. at the end of the glass, perhaps 3 hours after opening and decanting, it was still robust, yet grand and elegant.  Tasted by ATBridge on 10/24/2005 & rated 94 points: Opened for my grandma's 79th birthday. Beautiful garnet color with slight bricking at the edge. On the nose there is cassis, leather, and faint cedar. The palate is quite expressive of the aromas first encountered on the nose with substantial fruit to balance the maturing tannins. This wine was not decanted, but did become more enjoyable in the glass over a 2+ hour dinner. Certainly drinking well tonight, but will last for several more years. I probably would have scored this wine higher tonight, but was congested and sick, and couldn't appreciate all of the sublte nuances of a mature red Bordeaux. (11402 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 10/9/2005: Tasted this alongside the 83, 85, and 88. The nose seemed a bit closed for me but others didn't seem to think so. After breathing for a bit I picked up hints of tobacco and tar. The palate was very nice and smooth. (11154 views)
Tasted by Eric on 10/9/2005 & rated 95 points: Tasting of 80's Bordeaux at Seattle Wine Storage (Seattle, WA): This is pretty classic with a slightly reticent nose of tobacco and mint.  Tasted by beachbum on 5/20/2005 & rated 94 points: I double-decanted around 6 pm. Some bricking on the edges, but what a fabulous bouquet, just powered out of the decanter and filled the room. Nose of tabacco, lead pencil, cedar and liquorice. The wine was poured about 10 and was just as nice for the first 10 min, but then the nose settled down a bit. On the weighty pallet, the sweet fruit mingled with the cedary classic Pauillac taste into a decently long finish. Almost elegant, which is not typically what I think of about LB. I picked this bottle up at auction last year and I think it is "a pointe" now, but better stored versions may have longer to go. Outclassed the pristine 1990 tasted side by side, but the 1990 will be as good, may be better, in a few years. Great stuff. (11558 views)

Tasted by jamiekutch on 3/22/2005: 1982 Bordeaux @ Wilf's (NYC): The nose had some cigar box, with leather notes. In the mouth the wine had great integration with a healthy dose of sweet tannins. It was full bodied with a fleshy big mouth feel. The wine still tastes like a puppy and Parker underscored this gem in the rough. A wonderful accompaniment with our cheese course. This was my 3rd favorite of the evening and the groups favorite - or WOTN for the majority. (14131 views)
Tasted by DelYap on 2/19/2005 & rated 95 points: Poker night at Ray's: Ray tried to serve this blind, but he didn't hide the label well enough and I immediately saw the red border of a Lynch Bages. Now what year? The color definately gave away that it had some age on it, light ruby red that lightened at the edges. The nose was what I have come to love about old aged Bordeaux, cassis, herbs and cedar-cigar box aromas. In the mouth this was full bodied with tannins suggesting this is not going downhill anytime soon. Great balance and delicious with our meal. (13324 views)

Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 7/12/2003 & rated 93 points: Tasted single blind at 1982 horizontal Bordeaux dinner at El Bizcocho. Bottle taken from my personal cellar. Although the light was somewhat dim, the robe is unquestionably deep garnet with a brick/orange rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense kirsch, anise, lead pencil, mint and roasted herb aromas. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, melted tannins and a supple mouth feel. The evolution is quite nice, with similar flavors as for the nose. However, the finish is somewhat short for what is otherwise a stellar Pauillac. Excellent with the roasted duck (with wild mushroom fricassee, potato gnocchi and crouton "farce a gratin" in salmis sauce). (6887 views)

The nose is absolutely fabulous, with deep rich Cabernet fruit, cassis, plum and beautifully integrated oak. Textbook. On the palate, it is richly fruity, with just tons of berry fruit. Wow! It's hard to describe how richly endowed this wine is, with a hedonistic fruitiness, silkiness and structure that must be experienced. Fully mature, it is a luscious, delicious, elegant and lovely wine in all repsects. Easily demonstrates the greatness of the '82s. What great fruit. 5-13-19-8: 95/100. (923 views)

Vineyard map

BACKGROUND: The wine of Château Lynch-Bages is part of the lineage of the great Pauillac wines. Blended mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. It is further distinguished by its opulence. Generous right from its youth, it develops more flavours and greater complexity as it matures.

The affirmation of the Lynch-Bages style came with the arrival of Jean-Charles Cazes to head the estate in 1934. An innovative winemaker, emblematic of a new generation of owners willing to break with tradition and taking risks to ensure truly ripe harvests, he was known for often being the last to harvest in Pauillac. From 1945 onwards, the fame of the château emerged thanks to a series of great vintages. Some, despite being considered difficult to grow in Bordeaux, are particularly successful at Lynch-Bages. His wines are characterized by their deep colour, their tannic structure, their controlled concentration and elegant sensuality. The vintages vinified by André Cazes, and after him Jean-Michel Cazes, confirm this trend.

The style of the wines has refined over the years, gaining suppleness and softness, whilst their consistency has been established over time. Then as now, Château Lynch-Bages has been characterised by its extraordinary qualitative homogeneity. Powerful, elegant and open, vintage after vintage, the wine has acquired greater accuracy, adding distinction to the hedonistic character that made its reputation.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
