Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 108 notes)

Tasted by OnWisconsin on 11/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Stone fruit reserves, minerality, and shortbread/pastry (sweater than an autolitic note). Time has really transformed this into something beautiful.

Medium minus acid with a citrus-dominated finish.

This is in a really great place now. Could probably go another ~5 years, but why wait? Currently exhibitng mature notes, while clinging onto structure. (935 views)
Tasted by melzar on 7/5/2020 & rated 89 points: Has aged well. Fruit and petrol big time on the nose and palate. Good acidity, and considerably more residual sugar than I remember. Intense and complex. I prefer a drier style in dry Riesling, but very good for what it is.. (1290 views)
Tasted by Smatk on 4/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Potent nose of petrol, yellow fruit and a touch of lime. Palate is astringent with deep flavors of apricot, pineapple, and meaty papaya with slate minerality and a long, pithy finish. Intense and complex - probably the best bottle of Finger Lakes riesling I've had. Time has been very kind to this vintage. (1385 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 12/1/2019: Served blind
Strong petrol Riesling aromas,
almost to the point of being medicinal.
And bone dry which makes this a bit astringent on opening.

But with 2 days air this has opened up well and drinks rather nicely. (1396 views)
Tasted by wgilbert3 on 8/13/2019 & rated 88 points: Still very nice! (1408 views)
Tasted by Smatk on 12/31/2018 & rated 92 points: 2012 was a fabulous year. I love Ravines Rieslings for their minerality and bracing acidity. This has definitely improved- petrol on the nose. I wish I could keep these around long enough to get some age- from in-laws stash. (1402 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 8/5/2017: light-yellowish slate color. nose strongly waxy, almost like sniffing a crayon; slight honey, bright. Palate with slight sweetness, slight minerality, golden apple, tastes like drinking bright sunshine. opens up more and gains more depth with time in the glass. enjoyable, 89 pts (2398 views)
Tasted by Pour Boy on 7/23/2017 & rated 90 points: One of NY's finest riesling producers. If you haven't discovered Ravines yet, you haven't realized the potential of the Finger Lakes. Nose of wet slate, chalk. Acidity makes it a perfect match with foods, cheeses. (1979 views)
Tasted by FredF on 8/17/2015 & rated 90 points: Starting to show its maturity with a touch of the petrol that comes out in good Rieslings. Good food wine, nice crisp fruit, some minerality, good acid balance. (3708 views)
Tasted by Charlie Carnes on 7/9/2015 flawed bottle: Tasted against 4 other Rieslings from around the world. I didn't like this one a bit, I thought it was flawed. It was funky, flat, wierdly green and funky brown. I still say it was off. Others didn't think the wine was flawed. It finished last. (3918 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 6/21/2015 & rated 92 points: This wine surprised me. It was just about as good at this level as many German made reselling wines. It was light yellow in color. I tasted of pear and grapefruit and had that nice dieseling semi-bitter taste. it lasted all weekend in an opened bottle in the fridge with little loss of fruit. Based on this tasting, I would not hesitate to buy another NY wine again. (3783 views)
Tasted by Dar3 on 5/25/2015 & rated 90 points: Very nice riesling, exceptional QPR. 90-91 (2781 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 12/14/2014 & rated 91 points: This wine continues to show quite well. Served on the cold side of chilled and showed a very aromatic nose and great fruit-acidity balance. The acidity is still strong, but has blended into the body of the wine a bit more, resulting in a more complete bottle. Fruit retained its brightness and complexity and finished strong. Certainly has the qualities to last. Very well done Finger Lakes dry riesling. (3351 views)
Tasted by Necowine on 11/19/2014 & rated 88 points: Integrated palate of musk, lemon, and green olive, bright acidity, shale minerals. Based on muted performance on the second day, would think these would be better drank sooner. Very fair at 18usd. (2168 views)
Tasted by melzar on 11/15/2014 & rated 89 points: Most Finger Lakes "dry rieslings" have very noticeable residual sugar. Winemakers here know they taste and sell better that way. This wine is the exception. Nose of minerals and petrol. Somewhat bitter palate becomes more forthcoming with air and warmth showing amazing fruit and and acidity. Loooong finish. This is a white that can age and perhaps gain a point or two. (1844 views)
Tasted by djwitzel on 11/11/2014 & rated 89 points: Lush honeysuckle, lots of acid, a little minerality, well put together. (1850 views)
Tasted by tenorselbow on 10/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Attention all dry riesling lovers. If you come to US, you must go to Finger Lakes. I spent a couple of years living near Washington state, the biggest producers of riesling in the country and most of their regular riesling is cloyingly sweet. Even what they call "dry" riesling is really "off-dry". Have these people not tried Alsatian riesling? OK, I may be a bit of a riesling snob and there are some very good off-dry and sweet rieslings around the world (well actually only in Germany in my experience) that have matching acid. Very hard to pull off and not even necessary, in my opinion, given how good dry riesling can be (I am one of a tiny subset of Aussies who are very proud of our dry rieslings). I was in despair, but luckily USA is a big country and New York state goes for dry rieslings in a big way.
In the nose, I'm getting tropical fruit and caramel apple with good height. Still a little closed but I dare say that this one will age well as it seems very balanced. In the mouth, minerals, sherbet and citrus - big and still good height. On the finish good acid with a hint of buttered popcorn. Moreish. Riesling lovers rejoice! (2061 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 9/22/2014 & rated 87 points: Ok; nothing special (1527 views)
Tasted by Walkersj on 9/12/2014 & rated 89 points: Last one. Time to buy some more. (1505 views)
Tasted by Janstan on 8/11/2014 & rated 88 points: Went well with grilled shrimp, scallops & clams. (1652 views)
Tasted by dke on 8/2/2014 & rated 88 points: Nice nose of tropical fruits and petrol, on the palate, good and balanced with some bitterness on the finish. (1567 views)
Tasted by imissjerry on 7/23/2014 & rated 91 points: Stunning. (1583 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 7/7/2014: good acidity, clean finish, though it didn't quite have the power to cut through spicy thai food like i thought it would have. not complex, no particular/noticeable qualities to the finish, but with a nice nose and very pleasant palette there's not much more you can ask for at this price. (1581 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 7/4/2014 & rated 88 points: To really pass judgment I would need to drink another btl. This was served to family for the 4th and nothing about the glass I sipped stood out for my palate. Think I'm still far more excited about the Donnhoff QBA for exactly the same dollars. Other dry riesling aficionados may dig this more. (1849 views)
Tasted by FredF on 6/25/2014 & rated 89 points: Dry minerality with limited fruit (peach and stone fruits). Good food wine. Had with seasoned pork tenderloin (fennel and garlic) and the wine stood up well. (1490 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/21/2014 & rated 88 points: Aromas of mineral stone and crab apple. The palate follows the bouquet, ending with a hint of spice. Good body and presence on the palate. (1481 views)
Tasted by ininov on 5/9/2014: Sadly, this was the last bottle. Great as always, precise and balanced. A touch off-dry, despite the designation. Lovely through and through. (1508 views)
Tasted by Georgenenni on 4/27/2014: Very good balance, dry and sweet. Not overly memorable, but good play. (1566 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 3/21/2014 & rated 90 points: Served chilled. Aromas of pear, nectarine, grapefruit, white flower and flint. Pear, stone fruit, slate and bright acidity on the mid-palate. Leads to a long, crisp, dry finish with good mineral character. Excellent QPR. The acidity made this an excellent pairing with pierogi. (1715 views)
Tasted by 1964vintage on 3/21/2014 & rated 91 points: Bright citrus, melon, pear encased in a lively mineral backbone. Rating is based on pairing the wine with grilled scallops and black grouper. The nuances and layers shined with food. Price-to-value is outstanding. (1716 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 3/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Really such a great wine. Orchard fruits, minerals and while I thought this was bone dry all the times before I really see it has a nice off-dry that is very subtle. (2132 views)
Tasted by ininov on 3/14/2014: Solid as always. Pure, focused and balanced. Real standout food companion. The acidity and rs cut through anything like a laser. Pork stuffed sour cabbage pairing nightmare. Not a problem. Really lovely. (1496 views)
Tasted by clutj on 3/2/2014 & rated 92 points: Pear and apple, great acidity, loved it (1612 views)
Tasted by itsallaboutwine on 2/13/2014: Great discovery. Reminiscence of some Grosset wines. Very exotic/aromatic nose of pear and lime, slightly "alsace gentil", similar flavours (with a kind of light melon and bubble gum taste too) on the dry medium bodied palate. Good length. More fun than auster. Delicious and good value. ++++ (1338 views)
Tasted by aajder on 2/12/2014 & rated 88 points: Nice, light straw color. The nose shows good complexity, featuring orange blossom, citrus, white flowers and minerals. This is light bodied on the palate, with good concentration and decent finesse. The finish shows a wonderful mineral quality coupled with medium length. (1555 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 2/8/2014 & rated 89 points: Dry, medium(+) acidity, some petrole in the nose, citrus, apple, mineral, well balanced, crisp. Moselle style riesling. (1553 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 2/3/2014 & rated 90 points: apple, pear with hints of citrus and a nice quinine finish; good acidity; dry, clean, crisp and lively; very nice with chinese takeout and could work with almost any lighter fare. Surprisingly good. (1612 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 1/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Served slightly below cellar temperature. Pear, nectarine, lemon peel and slate on the nose and palate. Bright acidity leads to a long, crisp, dry finish. Excellent mineral characteristics and good acidic balance. Overall an excellent QPR and Finger Lakes Riesling. Paired with chicken casserole. (1677 views)
Tasted by Wine Sparty on 1/12/2014 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured with grilled mahi mahi. Aroma of minerals and tart green apple. Taste is very consistent with the aroma. This is my my first riesling from NY, and I quite like it and it reminds me of the rieslings from Michigan. (1726 views)
Tasted by daveste on 12/26/2013 & rated 85 points: Drinkable but overall not very good. Background heavy/earthy flavors harm the impression. Lacks the fresh flowery taste of almost any Riesling from Germany, CA or NZ. (1726 views)
Tasted by noahbw on 12/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice. Dry. Minerals. A little earthy. PJG: 90 (1656 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 12/24/2013 & rated 86 points: James Molesworth rated the 2012 Dry Riesling with a 91 point score in the October issue of Wine Spectator, citing its “good weight and drive, with Asian pear, fennel and Fuji apple notes carried by lively acidity. ....”

Did he say fennel? Yes, I'm afraid so and this tends to detract from the harmony of the fruit. The wine tends to have a subtle but noticeable tone of what some might describe as rubber or tennis ball aromas. (1886 views)
Tasted by rrmcnees on 12/24/2013 & rated 85 points: strange wine. overpowering new rubber aroma and flavor. (1664 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/22/2013 & rated 88 points: Slate, minerals, lemon-lime, citrus and just a touch of the sour at the end. Bone dry through and through. This is a nice example of a Finger Lakes Riesling and certainly a good drink to end a hot day in Puerto Rico. Feels like it's ready to drink now (no real need to lay it down). (1652 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 12/21/2013 & rated 91 points: Very impressive. Mineral, apple and citrus fruits with a bracing, acidic finish. There's some X-factor going here with this coming from the Finger Lakes. (1432 views)
Tasted by bianca15 on 12/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Wow. Have not had a Finger Lakes wine in a while. What a lovely wine. Bone dry but with that wonderful fruity Riesling quality. Very smooth. Tastes of melon but with that wonderful astringent quality of a Riesling. I am so glad we bought a case. (1548 views)
Tasted by yofog on 12/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Very mineral and peach, on par with Dr. Frank which was always my go to, though it's very different, it doesn't have that green apple, almost slightly under-ripe quality that you sometimes get (and which I love) in that wine. Very balanced and complete. (1560 views)
Tasted by Mike Kopanski on 12/14/2013 & rated 91 points: I'm totally embarrassed to admit I have never heard of this winery before 2 weeks ago. Even when I took the first sniff (not knowing it was from New York) and got a whiff of petrol, I was ready to discount the merits of this wine. I don't have enough experience to know how this wine compares with it's neighbors, but to me it is pretty remarkable. There is an austere but superb, underlying core of mineral laced, super dry, grapefruit rind meets scuppernong and flinty, wet shale flavors upon which all the flavor characteristics work in harmony. Even the petrol works. When you swish it around in your mouth all kinds of wonderful flavors get expressed. There is pear skin, nectarine, rhubarb, grapefruit rind, musk melon, pineapple, white apple, muscadine and all sorts of flinty mineral things. Bracing acidity. Full mouth feel. Not even a hint of sweetness. Rarely do we get so much unique flavor combinations. Outstanding wet stone fruit finish. (1556 views)
Tasted by Walkersj on 12/9/2013 & rated 90 points: delicious, full bodied, dry, great with or without food. A winner. Buy more ($16) (1672 views)
Tasted by wineshlub on 12/3/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Grapefruit, mineral aroma. Intense lichee flavor with notes of petrol. Evolving grapefruit finish that grows in sweetness. This has the tension and bite that is characteristic of Ravines riesling. Very dry, as always, but with a slight underlying sweetness that adds roundness and depth.

Excellent wine, outstanding value. (1887 views)
Tasted by Pour Boy on 11/30/2013 & rated 90 points: Great example of a Finger Lakes riesling. Slate, acidity, pear... Certifies what Western New Yorkers have known for some time now -- New York reislings are the real thing. (1642 views)
Tasted by SCMeyer on 11/29/2013 & rated 92 points: Great dry food friendly Riesling. Bright apple and pear on the nose. Good weight with same apple and pear notes on the palate. Finish is long, intense and very dry. All balanced with terrific acidity that cuts through to the very end. (1552 views)
Tasted by jpdel on 11/28/2013 & rated 90 points: surprisingly good. nose had some spicy notes, almost akin to a gewurz. Delivers with lots of tropical fruit, while dry, lends a perception of sweetness. Has a nice mineral streak and good acidity to bring it all together. (1591 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 11/28/2013 & rated 91 points: Really a great food wine. I don't know what else I can say about this that already hasn't been said. Orchard fruits, crisp mineral and citrus acids make this wine a great pairing for the poultry of Thanksgiving. Served along with PN, Mencia and Malbec heavy-Bdx blends, this made quite an impression with all the heavy starched foods as it was a complete palate cleanser. Great representation of a Finger Lakes riesling. (1815 views)
Tasted by melzar on 11/28/2013 & rated 89 points: Outstanding effort from the Fingerlakes of New York. Packed with complex fruit, and good acidity. Long finish. (1546 views)
Tasted by drinkfunkyanddance on 11/24/2013: Crazy value. Pear, peach, lemon combo, yet dry dry. Get it good. (1661 views)
Tasted by ininov on 10/24/2013: An entry level Riesling by Ravines, but done with finesse in a fresh style. The wine is vibrant and mineral, almost chalky. Not overly complex and not really bone-dry, but very enjoyable nonetheless and an amazing value, especially with their club discount. I would be curious how it changes with age. (1242 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 10/20/2013 & rated 90 points: Aromas of pear, apple, slate, lemon peel and a hint of petrol. Pear, citrus and slate on the palate lead to a long, crisp dry finish. An excellent Riesling that paired well with honey-mustard chicken. Well made and a very good QPR. (1795 views)
Tasted by Sauvyfan on 10/2/2013 & rated 88 points: Lemon water, petrol, and finty minerality on the nose. Weak midpalate is most noticeable. Initial attack is almost carbonated. Finish is tingly and charged with bracing acidity. I will save the other bottles for spicy Thai food. This wine is tiring on the palate without food to balance it. (2142 views)
Tasted by Marc on 9/30/2013 & rated 89 points: Distinctive nose of red apple, mineral and a touch of clove. On the palate, slightly earthy, a hint of of residual sugar adds body to a well structured and very tasty riesling that finishes dry. A hint of spice and red apple peel in the front palate, luscious mid and a spicy finish. A hint of lees-y complexity adds to a quite Alsatian style. Very nice! (2072 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 9/23/2013: Such a great wine. Scott and Steve want to get a minimum of 1 case and perhaps 2 sent down from the Finger Lakes. This felt like a Riesling from a Gran cru site in Alsace. Not sweet, but dry, though its fruit profile doesn't make it feel anything bet pleasurable. (2131 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 9/23/2013 & rated 93 points: I don't know what to say, other than this is the best Riesling I have had from from the finger lake region. So refreshing, especially after heavy reds have worn you down. crisp acid, beautiful stone and orchard fruit. Loads of slate/flint mineral and a great finish. I am going to buy a full case of this. I gave the other bottles to the local folks to let people know Morton is a serious and passionate winemaker. He uses yeast from Alsace and it shows in this wine. (2065 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 9/22/2013 & rated 91 points: Medium bodied riesling with excellent acidity. Pear and apple notes on the mid-palette and finishes with strong stoney and lime components. Good evolution as the wine warms. Excellent finish, both in length and character. This wine has the structure to last for several years. (1831 views)
Tasted by David_T on 9/8/2013 & rated 90 points: Both the nose & palate show intense lime & minerals, also some stone fruit. Nice acidity, mid-length finish. This should age nicely for several years, sadly this is my only bottle though I will be looking out for more. Showed better on day two. (1710 views)
Tasted by Motz on 9/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Wow, what a very nice surprise! Mineral, chalk, shale, lye, and the wonderful qualities of Riesling. Creamy texture, lively acidity, great taste profile, protracted finish. Drank it over three days; there's room for improvement here. Ravines states they make wines in the Old World style. Do they ever!!! (1682 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 8/13/2013 & rated 88 points: Mineral and citrus flavors. Good (1701 views)
Tasted by Euell Gophar on 8/3/2013 & rated 77 points: Dry? Not so much. Pair with stir-fry or tuna sushi. (1264 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/11/2013: Smells like rice. Or lees contact. Very bright and clear and spritzy on the palate. Again with the rice / lees character. For the long haul. I betcha thats gonna go a long ways. And the flavor says, to me, "some who cares made this this way." (1926 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
