Tasted by bryon m on 3/3/2024 & rated 92 points: A big night with a vertical tasting of 6 Caymus Napa Cabs.
1993 - Brown at rim, light in body, nice berry flavor, not much going on and a very shirt finish. Still nice
1997 - Color was good, medium body, more fruit and softer than the 1993.
2003 - A little better than the 1997, full body, round, nice mouth feel, good fruit flavors.
2009 - very enjoyable - full body, fruit and a touch of vanilla at the end. The end lingered for a while. Delicious.
2015 - This was the best, complex, round, drinking perfectly, good finish that lingered for a while. Nice balance of fruit and vanilla bean.
2020 - Good, less complex than the 2015, sweet fruit and vanilla. This could be better in a year. Soft mouth feel, round, delicious.

Tasted by Triforwine on 11/23/2023 & rated 92 points: I have a few of these left. Decided to try this with roast chicken on thanksgiving even though I usually go Southern Rhone for this occasion. American holiday, decided on a US wine and I am not a big Pinot fan so went with this knowing family likes this kind of wine. Opened and decanted well in advance. Considered but did not use Durand which wound up being a mistake as the cork snapped with a standard corkscrew. So, the bottom third of the cork was lost into the bottle. Immediately double decanted with filter. Modest amount of sediment, mostly coarse. No flaws noted.

Dark purple color in the glass, looks like a very young cab. Aroma perfect but reserved at first. Needed time to open up for sure but was drinkable pretty much right away. A few hours later it was best towards the end of dinner when things really started to unfurl. Still had a sip with pumpkin pie and it was amazingly good with it! Smoke, blackberry jam aroma. Flavor a bit overly dark fruit-forward at first but then setlled in and became a bit more complex. Endless pleasant finish with good grip but no tannic bite. Wonderful mouthfeel. This wine if well stored likely has a long life ahead. This was one of the best showings for it but I think I should save the last couple of these for a while. Certainly a crowd pleaser but doesn't hit the highest points on my scale as it isn't my preferred style of wine, just doesn't have the complexity of old world stuff. But it is great. Let's say 92 for now. Recommend a long decant at this stage, at least 2 hours and probably longer would be even better. There has been bottle variation in what I have but this bottle was in perfect condition in spite of my cork mistake. (1261 views)

Tasted by rocknroller on 10/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2 plus hours. Had this at the Ranch; my dad simply loved it (97 for him). Cassis, juicy plum, and purple fruits with purple flowers, cedar, earth, pepper on the nose. The palate is inky, dense palate saturating black and purple fruits, nice purity to the cassis and blackberry, graphite, anise, vanilla, and a velvety texture with a pepperey finish. This seemed to get sweeter and riper the longer in glass and the blacberry compote notes took over getting so it became more over the top where I did not really have those thoughts on first pouring. Repours brought this back to where its earlier moments were much brighter and contained. Not a great pairing with our steak by the time we got there. Personally, I would just pop these and drink unless you want to gravitate it more to a port style. 92+ to 93pts at peak. (1551 views)
Tasted by Spth115 on 9/3/2023 & rated 98 points: Wow! Still awesome all these years (in wine fridge) and was the best completely amazing Caymus Cab since I opened the 2008 about 3 months ago!
These wines in your cellar are jewels!
Can’t wait till the next one! 2010? (1471 views)
Tasted by Triforwine on 9/1/2023 & rated 89 points: Has been a while. On initial pour, quite sweet, almost raisiny but not flawed. Settled down after a bit and drank over four days with wife liking it a lot. For me, day 2 was best and by day 4 it was fading to not very good. Not my style of wine any more. Bottle variation from 9 I got from a friend. I’ve preferred the few 2008 I have. Recent vintages Just way to overextracted and Jammy for my taste. But it’s a crowd pleaser so I may open for others while I drink my Bordeaux! 89-90 for me. Drink up soon. (1217 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 8/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted and tasted, personally cellared for 12 years.
Lovely nose of blueberries and vanilla, the palate is full of black and blue fruit, soft smooth notes of vanilla oak, better balance and more complex than many of the Caymus regular Cabernets. Based on this well cellared bottle, I would highly recommend consuming sooner than later.
If you have a minute I also recommend reading my 07/03/20 note! (1095 views)

Tasted by Philip67 on 1/15/2023 & rated 89 points: Nice Blueberry, blackberry fruit, quite primary. Hints of tertiary leather. Slightly strange mid palate and finish. Imperfect bottle? Mid to full weight. Finish presents dry tannins, good acidity. Medium length, fairly straightforward. Drinking now and will ladt at least a decade. (1939 views)
Tasted by Renevin on 1/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Très beau nez, floral, fruits, anis. En bouche tout en rondeur, puissant avec une belle présence tanique. Belle longueur. Vin qui toutefois demeure sucré et qui peut finir par devenir lourdeau. (1640 views)

Tasted by WineGuyFL on 7/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Last bottle. I have had 2022 down as the last year of the drink window for this wine. It did not show signs of tiring, and it has delivered a consistent experience in recent years. It is not going to get better. So, I would rather enjoy it while it is as good as it can be.  Tasted by WineGuyFL on 5/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Still drinking very well. Classic Caymus. One bottle left.....will not let it sit forever. I have had 2022 down as the last year of the drink window. (1302 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 5/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Just love these aged bottles of Caymus from a decade ago. None of the overblown body and flavors from recent vintages. A very nice bottle with class, layers of flavor and a long spicy finish. (1401 views)
Tasted by capacious on 4/29/2022 & rated 92 points: In a good place, doubt much more to come, drink up. Will reward. Classic Napa cab, what we expect from Caymus. (1282 views)

Tasted by Ecoenophile on 10/16/2021 & rated 92 points: PNP - Solid and smooth. Well integrated - rich, earthy nose, some licorice notes... stops short of overplaying the fruit. Palate is plums, boysenberry - dark flavored... but not brooding. Finish was medium with well resolved tannins. Just a hint of sour cherry tartness on the closing notes. I can see why Caymus is a safe "go to" wine that anyone/everyone can enjoy... worked for me. I should probably buy more of this (and should have when I bought this one in 2011!). (2297 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Very dark red/purple color with a 2mm clear edge. PNP, split bottle over 3 hours. At the ranch with my dad. This has lovely fruit on the nose; cassis, wild blackberry, and huckleberry, sage brush, graphite, light eucalyptus and spicebox. The palate has a soft, satiny texture, graphite, cassis, plum, blackberry, subtle dried earth and wood spice, soft tannins and a balanced medium full bodied frame. This really feels like it has come all together and is ready to go. 92+pts. (2619 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 8/1/2021 & rated 94 points: This wine has continued to improve with age and is in its wheelhouse now. Just a delicious cab. The cooperage has sat down and the juice has leaned out but most importantly there is a tannic backbone that has relatively emerged amid those youthful prominent elements fading with time. That’s usually my complaint about Caymus as a younger wine, the fruit is extracted while cooperage is sweet and forward. At this age we see much better balance.

We did soft decant for fifteen minutes and really it needed thirty to really open. (3212 views)
Tasted by Triforwine on 7/25/2021 & rated 94 points: From the collection I got from JJ 5 years ago or so. Best bottle of this vintage (of caymus) I’ve had. Big, bold, fruit bomb yes but not syrupy or overwhelming on first pour like prior bottles. Have had bottle variation with this wine but this one seems to be hitting a really nice window. I did Coravin first 3 nights and drank one glass each night until opened it last night. Used Venturi as filter and to expedite aeration because previously I need an hour decant minimum-not to open but to calm the raging beast. Right now pop and pour is ok and if you can wait, an hour or so probably still a good idea. Blackberry, vanilla, some smoke aroma and flavor, moderate tannins, minimal but thick sediment at the bottom- just starting to develop a little finesse and complexity. Should continue to improve. 94+ (2513 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 7/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Yum. PnP with friends and this came out jammy, yummy and smooth. Lots of cherry, currant, medium plus body, long finish with no edges. Super fun crowd pleaser. (2565 views)

Tasted by sfbikeguy on 6/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Had two close friends over for steaks and opened a 2009 Insignia and 2009 Caymus for dinner. It was a nice opportunity to compare two wines from the same area. Opened both at 1pm which was 5 hours before dinner. Insignia was definitely the winner, but surprisingly, not by much. Insignia clearly had tobacco as a differentiator, but 12 years of aging on the Caymus was great. The bottles could definitely been opened a few hours earlier also. I believe I have seen notes from others saying the style of Caymus has changed around 2010. This was my last bottle of 2009 and giving them a ton of airtime before drinking has always served me well. Nice wine. (2116 views)
Tasted by JB12 on 5/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Still love this wine. Decanted for hr. Smooth and tasty. Its got the big flavor fruit but now is blended nicely into the framework.... I still have one left... (1761 views)
Tasted by Jetflyr on 5/29/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted for an hour. Some sediment. Quite an enjoyable bottle, but definitely at (or past) the end of its drinking window. I wouldn't hold it much longer. (1760 views)
Tasted by Mike1369 on 5/2/2021 & rated 90 points: Paired with steak. Just ok. Oaky, still lots of fruit. Somewhat syrupy tasting. I expected to taste a mature wine with some fruit and some earthy, leathery flavors, but I didn’t get that. Perhaps I expected more bang for the buck on this. Still it was ok I guess I expected better at this point. (8744 views)
Tasted by davudvl on 5/1/2021 & rated 89 points: It was a pleasant drinking cab. Very smooth, but had nothing really special/memorable going for it. (1793 views)

Tasted by LotionInTheBasket on 3/1/2021: Kind of having a good day, decided to drink something better than average in the moment and something that made me think. This is that for back and forth on what I've read on how Caymus has "changed". When is another thing. Later years are more charged. Arguable around this vintage, experiences and opinions varied and I let the bottle talk. This sits back a bit from more "modern". Popped for a 2 hour decant. Dark in the glass, heavier viscosity is apparent. Deeper violet, opaque, little give at the brim swirling or otherwise. Nose is relaxed fruit, purples and black, more interesting is the box of bullets ammo smell/graphite mixed with tobacco and magic marker intertwined with florals. While the front being plush plums and skins + vanilla, it flips towards more the tertiary on the mid-palate and that;s the star. It creeps up .Well integrated glycerin, some tar mixed with (pick some) spices, graphite, anise even showing up late on the fruit's behalf, just a lot to take in. Acidity feels like more a supporting actor in all yet can't be ignored underneath. It does not present or finish like more modern vintages I've had IMO. Not many left like these. Love the all the little things here, not over-powered with fruit, polite, elegant, and just delightful. Hindsight even the weight was not what it was when i started. It made me think and still does.  Tasted by sfbikeguy on 2/19/2021 & rated 92 points: 7th of 8 bottles. I really enjoyed this and you have to appreciate Caymus for what it is. Especially given it's price. I do recommend decanting for several hours. That's going to be a win. I did 5 hours and enjoyed through the night. I recommend 90 minutes of airtime at a minimum. (2073 views)

Tasted by gamlingman on 1/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Finally got around to opening up this magnum last night at our wine dinner and I was not disappointed. Love the earlier Caymus vintages much more than their mass produced stuff now as you can tell the difference. Big bursting cherry and floral notes with a magnificent spicy round finish. Outstanding.  Tasted by slabslovin on 1/1/2021 & rated 88 points: A friend opened a magnum for New Years Eve. Expectations were high. Disappointing wine. Overriding cola taste. Brown sugar, some mild fruit. Light tannins. (1763 views)
Tasted by CCestaro on 12/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Very solid tonight for Christmas dinner with a herb and garlic encrusted rib roast. It was matched with an 03 Heitz Martha which stole the show, but my boys wives, who like a bit more upfront fruit nuances liked the Caymus better. It’s drinking fine...as most 07-10 Caymus do after ten years of cellaring. Zero deterioration...this has many years of solid delivery going forward. (1316 views)
Tasted by Cellartracker@drkayem.com on 12/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Outstanding wine. Dark color that confirms its lineage. Wonderful combination of blueberry, cherry and charcoal. Appears to be at its peak now. (1656 views)
Tasted by SyrahForth310 on 10/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Deep, inky color.
Some strawberry, cherry on the nose out of the bottle.
Black fruits, cola, cocoa nibs on the palate with a balanced and friendly finish. very smooth with light tannins.

Impressed at how well this aged. (2192 views)
Tasted by Marc S on 9/26/2020 & rated 92 points: - Brick color with slow forming legs. It's balanced and has flavours of blackberry, raspberry and strawberry with a medium/full body. Leathery texture with a medium finish - Wonderful nose and well balanced. Slight tannins still. (2107 views)

Tasted by iamandyc on 9/22/2020 & rated 92 points: This is aging nicely as it gets more refined with age. Still a touch sweet upon entry but with nice layers of chocolate, coffee and spice. Not flabby and overdone as recent vintages. Smooth flavorful finish. (2053 views)

Tasted by Rich S on 9/5/2020 & rated 88 points: Popped and poured. Big, ripe black fruits on the nose with blackberry, black plum, cassis, a bit of toasty oak and vanilla with a faint hint of cigar box coming through. More primary than expected for a 10+ year cabernet. Similar flavors on the palate with ripe, slightly cooked black fruits, baking spices and oak. Medium- acid and tannin. Drinking a bit soft to be honest. Very smooth but a hint of alcohol on the finish. Most people really enjoyed this wine but it was just ok for me and poor QPR. Lack of structure tells me drink up if holding. (1545 views)
Tasted by gamlingman on 8/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Typical Caymus as year 11 of this vintage & it is fairly consistent with its earlier years. While the 2007 seemed to mellow a little more quickly there is still some grit left here. Solid nose of Oak and dark fruits. Its deep purple color and up front taste of Vanilla while its round finish makes this quite enjoyable as most Caymus productions are. Not much time left for this one so drink now. (1688 views)

Tasted by wineshaman on 7/3/2020 & rated 92 points: I thought I would share some notes from Chuck Wagner on the 2009 vintage.
The tannin levels of our wines are higher and the acidity lower than most other Napa Cabernets. Our processes from vineyard to the winery are responsible for this desirable combination. The wine is "nuanced" with French oak aging for 16 months before bottling. Our goal is to make wine that tastes exciting in its youth or in its wisdom of 10 years or more. I generally favor wines which are 12 years or younger regardless of their origin, but that's my personal taste.
2009 Tasting Notes:
Scarlet color and brackish edges. Nose is sweet fruit and smoked meats. This wine already has some bouquet− truffle mushrooms, vanilla style oak. The palate is creamy richness with nuances of leather and a cocoa-style fine grain tannin. The flavors and structure of this vintage are consistent from year to year.
These notes echo my sediments of this and most of the Cabernets produced by Caymus.

I personally appreciate their wine for the same reasons others don’t. (1915 views)

Tasted by Night Train on 4/4/2020 & rated 89 points: Nice assertive nose - currants, graphite/smoke, and a hint of creme brulee. Plums, black cherries, and more creme brulee on the palate. Rich, viscous texture, but a surprisingly brief finish. Tannins are not resolved; they're GONE. The nose, flavors, and mouthfeel warrant a 91 or 92, but the mediocre finish and complete absence of tannins drag down the score. Needless to say, it's past time to drink up. (2132 views)

Tasted by Night Train on 1/26/2020 & rated 90 points: No visible signs of age. Nice nose - currants, with a hint of vanilla. Plums and black cherries on the palate. Fairly rich, with a creamy quality that I found odd but pleasant. Decent finish - dark fruits and more of the creaminess. Enjoyable, but not a religious experience. Too bad Caymus started bottling vanilla lattes beginning with the 2012 vintage. Of course, the Wagner family is laughing all the way to the bank, so what do I know? (2638 views)

Dark earthy nose with some oaky sweetness. The pallet opened up to be very plush with dark fruit, with hints of vanilla that coats the mouth and has a touch of acidity. Very balanced at this point. I would not leave this much longer iris probably at its peak now. Could leave it for a year or two, but I would be afraid it will spiral downwards beyond that. Solid 92-93 points. Excellent.  Tasted by wconnolly on 12/23/2017 & rated 89 points: Deep ruby color. Nose full of ripe berry and clove. Big, full bodied and hugely fruit forward with blackberry and cassis and a bit of pepper on the palate. Not what I had expected. I have consumed four or five vintages of Caymus. I have found it to be approachable at a very young age and I have found it a bit softer and rounder than this. This was a rich, fruit bomb and for my taste, a bit over the top. (2520 views)
Tasted by Robij on 12/17/2017 & rated 70 points: Nose of blackberry jam and cassis. Flavor continues with blackberry and blueberry, with a very dense chewy and big character. Finish is long.  Tasted by davidandrose on 10/8/2017 & rated 94 points: Not decanted but allowed to breathe for an hour, then followed over 3 hrs. Dark berries, charred wood, meat and smoke on the nose. Rests on the palate in near-perfect balance; the dark black and blue fruits show a still-youthful presence, with a Beautiful Tanic backbone.

I don’t typically gush over Caymus, but this is a particularly good vintage that appears to be drinking in the prime of its window. Sadly my Last Bottle, this can be followed over the next 1 to 3 years but again – is in the prime of its window and should be enjoyed today if you like fruit-forward notes in your wines.

Pronounced nose- extracted black fruit, caramel, vanilla , oak.

Full bodied, medium acidity and medium tannins. Lots of black fruit , caramel and vanilla on the palate. The finish is medium plus.

Overall very well made. My score is under 90 as this style is bit more confected than my preference, but would warrant a higher score by someone who likes this style ( and I'm sure there are many).

Tasted by Grenik on 6/12/2016 & rated 89 points: Very good for the oaked Napa style. Smooth with a lot of fruit and vanilla. Walks the line between too big and too smooth and generic quite well. Well made.

The wine lacks "élan vital". I opened this next to a simple 2009 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel ($25) and the difference is striking. The Caymus is very flat and generic when tasted next to the CdR.

Still, the Caymus is a great example of the style that was popular in 2009 Napa Valley and is well made. (3749 views)

Tasted by swade on 5/11/2016 & rated 92 points: I let this breathe up in the glass for an hour. Garnet stone color. Long legs, with the suggestion of high alcohol. Fragrant, vanilla signature of the Wagner family of wines. The underlying smells are evocative of port - brandy and raisins. Smooth, demi-sweet entry. This opens with concentrated, tart, red currant jam, vanilla oak and a dusty finish. An uber barbecue crowd pleaser or steakhouse favorite. This succeeds in it's intentional styling. This seems a little flabbier than the 2008. They know what they grow and who they are. Great fruit source. This is the Liberace of wines, you can pick on them, but "they are crying all the way to the bank." 92 (3365 views)

Tasted by TallMikeWine on 4/24/2016 & rated 90 points: Caymus is always the first of the big Napa cabs to release theirs. Way ahead of the other big names on the block. I think they use a lot of new oak, for shorter time spans. The fruit is always heavily extracted, and deep/dense. This was no different. I liked it a lot on day one, out of the decanter...even better on day 2 (I poured it back in the bottle). Probably a bit high priced for what this is, but isn't all the super corporate wine with a "name brand" attached? If one were to shop, and know what some of the smaller wineries nearby were up to, one might find a better wine for less money. (3207 views)

Tasted by wineshaman on 5/17/2015 & rated 93 points: All the usual Caymus traits, sweet, dark, rich, extracted, etc. paired perfectly with BBQ beef brisket from Deep Run Roadhouse ( the best brisket I have ever had) the smokiness of the meat and the richness of the Caymus was a marriage made in heaven. Yum! (3858 views)

Tasted by davidandrose on 2/8/2015 & rated 91 points: Coravin'd a large glass which sat for 40 mins before sampling. Rich and young blue/black fruit on the nose along with some pepper and spicebox; wine is certainly approachable but still tight and extracted (as noted by others), with fine tannins providing a smooth but dry coating of the palate. Oak, vanilla, hint of green back-palate. Needs more air than afforded by the coravin tonite (5005 views)

Tasted by R&R on 1/19/2015 & rated 91 points: Solid wine. While in general I wasn't a fan of '09, the Caymus shows once again why it is as popular as it is. Well integrated flavors of plumbs, cassis, wood smoke, pencil shavings; but the finish was quicker than it should have been. Still very good, just not as long as I remember. (4918 views)
Tasted by oog on 12/30/2014 & rated 90 points: Nose: Black stewed fruit and lots of oat. Baking spice. Taste: Licorice bomb. Oak and fruit. Nice body. Not quite as sweet as other vintages of Caymus we have had in the past. (5317 views)

Tasted by smileBD on 12/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Great, big & rich Cab that I used my coravin with over several months with a few different friends, for tastings and then opened the last 1/4 to drink when we didn't open open a 2nd bottle of wine but wanted a bit more. It was a perfect amount to enjoy the last of this terrific cab! (3526 views)
Tasted by Grouper on 12/25/2014 & rated 95 points: Maybe the best wine I have enjoyed. Through a wine breather and then in decanter for 2 hours. Dark color and full smooth flavor (3643 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 12/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted approx. 30 minutes ... This has mellowed considerably since our first bottle two years ago. While still fruit forward, it's no longer a blueberry gut punch at first sip, opening with less pronounced bramble berry notes. The oak is better integrated, and there's less vanilla; more mocha tones. Spice is also muted. Soft and smooth and rich and lush and just enough over-the-top-ness. Not exactly what I'd want to drink everyday, but a perfect Christmas Day drinker. ... Christmas 2014 (3219 views)
Tasted by robertdtwo on 12/22/2014 & rated 92 points: OK, I'll admit it. I've been a little tough on Caymus lately, especially with the release of 2009s/10s/11s. Overextracted. Too sweet. While that may be true...my opinion is evolving...I'm starting to think that maybe they're just (intentionally?) producing CAbs for drinking NOW, rather than later. Instead of bashing them, I'll just drink 'em young and enjoy it while I wait for other cellar dwellers of mine to mature. Nose of sweet dark fruit; black cherry, blackberry jam & red currant on the palate; distant campfire on finish. Ready to go, no reason to wait.
It's funny: I recognized this trend earlier in some of what I call 'steakhouse expense account' Napa blends, but I failed to see it here until now. (3357 views)
Tasted by JB12 on 11/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 90 minutes and served with a lamb dish against a Barolo. As per typical Caymus, the wine has strong vanilla flavors, with many other berry fruit flavors coming to the nose and taste. Decanting ahead of time is a must as the wine becomes awesome in body and length of finish. (3910 views)
Tasted by crispino on 11/28/2014: Drank with Thanksgiving dinner, and what with making the dinner and having good conversation with the guests, I don't have a detailed recollection of this one. Having said that, I distinctly recall enjoying it thoroughly, with a long, deep, rich pulse of fruit, well-integrated tannins, and a very nice long finish. Full of brambly fruit flavors without being syrupy. (3361 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 11/16/2014 & rated 93 points: Decanted 1hr, classic Caymus love it or hate it, this vintage is quite rich, big and extracted. Huge flowery nose , hints of oak and vanilla, sweet currants, cassis, black cherry, plum, some koolaid notes on the palate. The richness of the fruit continues though out the mid palate and finish. I kid you not I could taste the sweetness of the fruit two minutes after my last taste. This Caymus (like most) should be drunk over the next five years to appreciate the sweetness and freshness of the fruit. With Caymus that is what it is all about IMHO! (4035 views)
Tasted by colf on 11/15/2014 & rated 87 points: Light to medium bodied Cabernet. Nothing special here. Great bouquet, plum dark cherry fruits. Finish is short lived. Have had a lot better at $65 a bottle. (3838 views)

Tasted by Hodby on 8/24/2014 & rated 87 points: Dark red color. Nose of very sweet, ripe plum, intense wood from both American and French oak. On arrival, low tannin and low acidity; smooth and ready to drink structure-wise. Dramatic and heavy-handed oak delivers a palate sweetness of vanilla and chocolate that overwhelms fruit. Seems to suggest that if this bottle is representative of the overall release, it's a drink-now bottling, if one wishes to appreciate the fruit before it is dried up and fully subsumed in wood; absent is a structure to suggest it has much positive aging curve ahead. Bottle #2 of three. (4781 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 7/27/2014: This was very nice. I agree with other reviewers that the style has a bit of residual sweetness. But it was polished and had good balance of fruit and tannins. (5397 views)

Tasted by Baron Slick on 5/6/2014 & rated 91 points: Deep purple. Big, rich, and extracted, with a woody nose of black currants, cherries, cassis, bay leaf, sandalwood, and camphor. The dense and tarry palate is more powerful than elegant and is marked by good length, concentration, hefty yet suave tannins, and copious amounts of ripe, black fruit, cedary spice, toasty oak, and an espresso and licorice finish.  Tasted by Rezy13 on 3/29/2014: Dark purple, highly extracted; floral nose that was very nice along with lots of cassis and red currant, cedar, pretty classic CA Cab; palate was richer, not sweet, same fruit as nose, plum, tart, cedary tannin on the finish; still very structured needing at least 2-3 years before it should be very good.  Tasted by domco on 12/6/2013: I always find the Caymus notes so interesting. At the end of the day, great scores, but so many negative and nasty notes (and I would guess those that write them know they are going to hate it before they even try it). I'm not sure I want to drink it all the time, but I appreciate the consistency of style... Dark fruits and chocolate all wrapped in an impeccably smooth vanilla coat. Goes down easy on a Friday night after a long week. When you're in the mood, what more can you ask for? (5753 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 12/6/2013: Oaky, disjoint and unpleasant wine. Could not finish a glass. Spicy, with pronounced flavors of white pepper, vanilla extract, and alcohol, this wine tasted as if the ripe and gritty, 'Rutherford dust' like extracted juice was left in a tub full of oak chips. Perhaps this wine will attain a better balance in the future; doubt it would appeal to my palate even then. (5214 views)

Tasted by daniel.jay on 10/13/2013 & rated 88 points: This wine is too sweet. I tried it in November 2012 and hoped that another year would allow the oak/vanilla to settle down. It has not and I would not recommend this wine at its typical price point of $60+. It is not undrinkable and paired with the right bold/spicy food, it almost works. But for a wine of this price and perceived stature, it should have much better balance. (7176 views)

Tasted by NROSS on 6/2/2013 & rated 80 points: This wine is completely overpowered by vanilla and chocolate. It's a desert wine. There's also a powerful perfume smell. I find it almost undrinkable so 80 is generous. Someone posted that it's similar Cakebread. That's fair. Their 2009 Cab is shockingly overpriced considering the contents of the bottle. I've had lots of Cali cabs with a choco/vanilla aspect to them. I find them all better without food. Again, like a desert wine. This one has crossed the line however.

I suppose I've been drinking too much french wine and when I come back to something like this it seems childish. Sorry to be so harsh but the emperor has no clothes. (5849 views)

Tasted by jonradus on 1/27/2013 & rated 86 points: This vintage appears to be closed off right now. Either that, or this bottle was a little off. The dense, sweet fruit is a bit sour and hollow now. It's still a great bottle of wine, but it's nowhere near as good as the bottle I had a year ago. Perhaps it's a testament to the difficulty of this vintage with the late rain. (6766 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 1/21/2013 & rated 86 points: Inky purple, opaque and full of glycerine. Immediately evident its very modern in style. First thing on the nose is vanilla, then some alcohol, though not "hot". You get very ripe plum...almost prune sugar density. There is also a little spice and menthol on the nose. If i was tasting this blind, at this point I would have guessed Australian Shiraz. The first flavor you get is Oak and vanilla, with very extracted fruit mostly the sweet plum and boysenberry. Secondarily you get some cedar and tobacco but you really have to search for it. It is smooth and pretty much devoid of tannin. The finish lasts barely 10 seconds. For those who like young, highly extracted wines I guess this is right up your alley, but for me its not at all what I like in Cabernet Sauvignon. My assessment is the grapes were over-ripe and this is the kind of wine that results. I have been a Caymus fan for 3 decades but I find this style of wine unappealing...if I wanted Shiraz I'd buy it, which I do on occasion. This wine will be lucky to last another 3 years in my view, so drink it as an infant, that's just what it is. (7044 views)
Tasted by jessup on 1/20/2013: Supple and creamy-textured, with mocha, ripe plum and cherry flavors that show touches of tobacco, espresso and underbrush.  Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 12/31/2012: Cellartracker is exactly right on this one: it's delicious, but it isn't wine! (Hyperbole, but something that is so manipulated and tastes this away from the vineyard you have to wonder if it fits the definition of wine.)  Tasted by Castle Peak on 12/27/2012 & rated 93 points: Teamed this at Christmas dinner of filet and fixins with a 2010 Mark Herold Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and 07 Bridesmaid Red Wine. All were opened for 3 hours before tasting. Caymus was described by group as approachable, fruity, rich, floral, spiced, oaky and complex. Mark Herold was described as big, dark, ripe, round, smooth, young and monstrous. The Bridesmaid was bright, smoky bacon flavors, peppery, herbs and lasting finish. The 6 tasters enjoyed all the wines, but liked the Caymus best, Herold 2nd and Bridesmaid 3rd. (5367 views)

Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 12/1/2012 & rated 91 points: Rich, thick, creamy texture with loads of dark cherry and vanilla flavors - almost candy-like with hints of warm maple syrup. Overwhelmingly sweet and extracted. Fills the mouth with alcohol, and a little over the top. Not really a balanced wine, more of a fruit bomb or grape juice on steroids. Very far from the 2007 and the 2004 vintages. Drink from 2012 to 2017. (8053 views)

Tasted by Delli on 11/24/2012 & rated 92 points: Purple and opaque. This wine looks capable of staining glass with its long translucent purple legs. The nose has lots of heat and ripe jammy fruit - plumbs, green apple, strawberries, vanila and sour cherries. Mouth feel is large with velvety tannins. The palette is much more refined than the nose would imply. The finish starts smooth and finishes with a syrupy vanilla. 5+13+16+8=92 (6270 views)
Tasted by lifeattable on 11/23/2012 & rated 85 points: Decanted 2 hours. Velvety smooth, but also quite boozy and featuring almost overpowering notes of vanilla. Though I can sorta get why people like this, I can't really understand how it warrants the price or the critical praise. I didn't mind drinking it, but it was not particularly food-friendly or balanced. Also, I don't see how aging this would make it any better; drink now. 84-87pts (5591 views)

Tasted by wineclerk on 6/16/2012 & rated 94 points: Getting to try the Caymus Cab 2009 is a real treat.
A thick very dark wine appears almost inky scarlet to vermilion in color. On the nose, it exhibits lush fruit, succulent blackberry, ripe raspberry, and big black cherry. The fruit hits it out of the park!
The bouquet brings mushrooms, chocolate, vanilla to the table. Well structured, the French-Oak delivers toast and smoke on the palate (16 months French-Oak before bottling).
Soft tannins coat the mouth. Low acidity and sweet red fruit make it taste like red otter-pops (in a good way). The finish is tannic and hot just the way I want my Napa Cabs (14.8% abv).
Overall it's an exceptional wine. (11396 views)

Tasted by crispino on 5/12/2012 & rated 94 points: Wow, I really loved this. We had a tiny sip right after opening, then poured through an aerator into a decanter for about two hours. The nose was blackberries, blueberries, and a little earth and vanilla. Not overpowering aromas, just rich and inviting. There is a little bit of sweetness up front, then it opens up into a delicious mix of the fruit flavors. The tannins seemed round, even in the sip just out of the bottle, and very pleasant, making for a nice mellow finish. Highly, highly enjoyable! (9686 views)

Tasted by ernie237 on 5/6/2012 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 1.5 hours. Tannins were fairly strong at first when opening, but quickly mellowed out once decanted. Notes of vanilla and oak, like others mentioned. However I disagree about the vanilla being excessive. This wine has nice acidity, structure, and balance. It held up easily with a ribeye steak. I will probably give my other bottles at least another 6 months to a year, but it drinks very nice with decanting now. (8963 views)
Tasted by DanTheRhoneFan on 4/29/2012 & rated 90 points: When first opened I tested for cork-ness and was met by vanilla followed by a tannic attack. However, the bottle was then decanted for 1.5hrs and the result was quite nice. I do have to agree with other reviewers here and say that the vanilla was almost overwhelming to me. Too much oak was the opinion at the table.. In fact one of us stated it was somewhat like drinking a chocolate milk shake.. A description that once stated I could agree with. That being said it was one of the best chocolate milkshakes I have had with dinner and it stood up nicely against beef tenderloin, vinager heavy potato/green bean salad, and a horseradish sauce. Definately drinkable now with a 1hr+ decant. (8682 views)

Overall: I have to say I'm impressed by this offering. I'm not sure that there are many producers making this style of wine at this price point. For $60 I want and expect clarity, complexity, and length. With Med+ tannin, Med acid, and intense fruit on the palate over a 30-45 second finish this is a home run for me. This is clearly California...and there's nothing wrong with staying true to where you're from. Outstanding. (9841 views)

The palate is a layered complexity of sweet, sour, and very light tannins. Drink over the next 5 years, but at the same time will cellar well over ten years for sure. I do notice that about 72,000 cases were made. That brings some variability from bottle to bottle, as well as a whole host of opinions. I would love to say the same thing about the 2009 but I can not. I've had the '09 twice and it is ridiculous. All I taste is vanilla and chocolate. The amount of vanilla in this wine is sickening.  Tasted by fort on 2/4/2012 & rated 93 points: This is not a classic cab by any means, but delicious nonetheless, and I would definitely buy more. You have to be in the mood for it, and it packs a flavour punch that pairs great with BBQ. The nose is mainly chocolate/mocha with blackberries and a touch of cough syrup (it is high alcohol) in the background. The palate is where this won my over - it has a very compelling, rich, mouth coating texture and a finish that goes on and on. Drank over the course of three days, and it did not change much at all. I can see this lasting but not necessarily improving. (10223 views)
Tasted by Tom Henriksveen on 1/27/2012 & rated 88 points: This is serious wine! Dark ruby red color, nose of black currant, vanilla and spice. On the palate very dominant dark berries/black currant flavors, toasted oak, spices and minerals (lead/blyantspiss). Soft tannins and the oak is nicely integrated. Low acidity and very bright fruit, but not overly extracted. Bordeuauxish style. Drink now for freshness, or lay down for a few years for more maturity.  Tasted by winoj on 11/25/2011 & rated 93 points: Simply amazing vanilla, cassis, and rich layered bottle. One of the best values for this caliber of wine in a long time. (11974 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 11/25/2011: popped and poured a bit warmer than cellar temp. Dense dark opaque purple red. Chocolatey, creamy, berry. Delicious? yes. Wine? My dinner guests thought not. Has plenty of stuffing, but the style seems to be going further and further away from wine and more towards dessert. **** for what it is. (12030 views)
Tasted by sumshark on 11/23/2011 & rated 84 points: From vintages 2002 - 2009 this vintage is by far the most uncharacteristic Cab I have tasted from Caymus as well as other producers. Very candied on the palate with hints of root beer, thin palate, no typical cab profile. If this is where Caymus is heading it is not going in the right direction, gives me some pause as to whether or not to purchase the '09 SS. Much better Cab for the money with Turnbull, Chappellet, Rothwell Hyde... (12337 views)
Tasted by Gordianbar on 11/22/2011 & rated 90 points: Amazing jamminess both in nose and taste on opening, after ~ 30 minutes the wine mellowed somewhat but still had a wonderful current, jam taste. Great nose, body was firm with strong tannin underpinnings and a very smooth long finish. I would wait another 1-2 year before tasting again but a very lovely wine. (11795 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 11/22/2011 & rated 94 points: Smooth, subtle. Nicely balanced with hits of cocoa, coffee and caramel. a little sweet. A really beautiful wine. Drink now or hold for 5 years. Well done. (12160 views)

Tasted by Hawk94 on 11/11/2011 & rated 91 points: Purple bright red, wild cherry, berries and earthiness. Impressive mid palate loaded with dark fruits, chewy tannins, a bit coase and bitter, could use a few more years in cellar to smooth it out. Still a Caymus, you can not mistake it, powerful red. (11520 views)
Tasted by oldsouthboy on 11/11/2011 & rated 90 points: Beautiful nose of dark cherry, cassis, and jam. Mid palate carries on well from the entry. The finish is where I have an issue. A little too much sticky sweet sugar for me. But hey they made over 70,000 cases of the 2009. Impressive! (11994 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 11/10/2011 & rated 93 points: Subtle nose. Blueberry on palate. Lots of flavor. Surprisingly approachable for such a young wine. Very enjoyable. From Dad's cellar at Keuka. (11460 views)
Tasted by Cliequotdm on 11/1/2011: - Garnet color with medium forming legs. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of licorice anise with a medium/full body. Narrow texture with a medium finish - Drank today with friends. Good aroma, but finish was not great. Probably needs more aging. (11656 views)

Tasted by lumpyelbow on 10/7/2011: Napa 2011; 10/6/2011-10/9/2011 (Napa Valley, California): Out of all the wines we tried this was the most "Californian". Excellent wine that we had multiple times and was one of the trip favourites. A laser beam of vanilla fruit on the palate gave this a very distinctive signature. (10650 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 10/2/2011 & rated 93 points: Another great vintage. Just waves of fruit with a nice long finish. (4456 views)
Tasted by BSteffes on 10/2/2011 & rated 92 points: Tasted this together with a 2008 caymus to compare and contrast. Ran both through a vinturi and enjoyed over3 hours. This 2009 did not have as much purple in the glass. Beautiful bright red color with shades of purple on the edge. Nose was muted compared to the 08 but still had nice scents of red fruit and, loads if dark fruit and subtle hints of spice. Mouthfeel feel was slightly thin but still enjoyable. This wine is drinking now, after some air, very nicely. This is the epitome of a napa cab and has a very nice qpr. strong flavors of cocoa powder and dark fruit. Love the napa pencil lead that also started to emerge. Paired beautiful with some grilled sirloin Bought a case and can't wait t enjoy over the next couple years. Don't stick this one in the cellar for 10 years. Enjoy. (9712 views)

Tasted by youngvintners on 9/18/2011: Excellent bottle. Ripe fruit at the start, fades into chocolate, and refreshing smooth grape. Low tannic finish prepares your mouth for another sip. Buy as much as you can and savor every sip. (8864 views)
Tasted by DanH on 9/15/2011 & rated 91 points: Great wine, perfectly balanced, chocolate, soft and perfectly integrated tannins. If I can lodge one compaint is that this wine is lacking in some acids to brighten it up. I drank with braised short ribs and there was nothing about the wine that popped. (8197 views)
Tasted by sasvino on 9/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Solid fruit bomb, heavy vanilla, big body through finish, not well balanced but I think its just young and could use 3 years+ to gain some elegance. Low 90s but could improve a lot over time. -S (4843 views)

Tasted by mguglielmo on 9/5/2011 & rated 93 points: No formal notes, because quite frankly, I was enjoying this wine too much to take them. Absolutely tremendous wine, and drinkable right this very second. As soon as I have another $60 to burn, I'll be buying more. Superb. (7534 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 9/5/2011 & rated 93 points: Hedonistic, big young cab that I was really in the mood for tonight. Thick texture with some acidity but the tannins seem totally masked by the fruit. The palate is dominated by chocolate covered coffee beans with a little pencil lead there as well. Dark black fruits.  Tasted by GoodfellaWizeguy on 8/30/2011 & rated 93 points: Decanted and drank over several hours. This wine evolved through several different deviations, with each being unique and satisfying. Overall, massive fruit with a hint of mocha and chocolate. I will be buying more (a lot more!). (7696 views)
Tasted by Mullane on 8/26/2011 & rated 92 points: This should age well. Pulled a bottle to see, and did not disappoint. Paired with Prime Rib. Aside from being young still, and outstanding drink. (7335 views)
Tasted by caeleric on 8/22/2011: too bad there's not a button for "I REALLY like it." this is in a really decadent spot right now. i described it as "sex in a glass" when i poured it into the decanter (i'm pretty sure i stole that descriptor from pjaines). pure hedonistic joy of ripe blackberries, cassis, vanilla, and even some caramelized brown sugar. the palate is thick and unctuously textured and bursting with ripe black fruits. a long finish is expected and the wine does not disappoint. caymus is so remarkably consistent vintage over vintage; it's almost like their wines can be considered nv and they stay true to their house style year over year. awesome stuff and to me much better than '07. (8099 views)
Tasted by jonradus on 8/21/2011 & rated 95 points: Caymus wines never cease to amaze me. I've drank a ton of bottles from '06 to '09 over the past three years and have noticed a trend with Caymus: 1) these wines are better the younger they are, and 2) every vintage tastes and ages similarly. If you enjoy Caymus, you no doubt enjoy sweet, hedonistic wines. The younger bottles of Caymus show more of the heddy characteristics. As it ages even a couple of years, it starts to develop a chocolaty aspect that can muddy up the sweetness. The older ones are still great, but they haven't improved to a place where it was worth cellaring the wine. I think the Select ones are what Caymus intended for cellaring. Continuing on, this bottle of'09 was frickin' awesome. Super sweet and balanced with a mouth-popping finish that really did last. Way to go Caymus... (7636 views)

Tasted by km5 on 7/30/2011 & rated 93 points: Up against 2008 Caymus and 2007 Shafer 1.5...I like this the most--less alcohol less heat, plenty of fruit and mocha. Shafer had nicer tannins. 2008 was big with much heat to go with it. Big difference is the alcohol. (7544 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 7/29/2011 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby color. Blackberry and currant nose. Tastes of black cherry, violet, anise, earth, and mocha. Large oak backbone that needs time to integrate. Firm tannins. Good acidity. Powerful finish with some nice complexity. Well done. 14.4% alcohol. (5871 views)
Tasted by bablues on 7/29/2011 & rated 94 points: I agree with previous notes that this is very similar to previous vintages. The consistency from Caymus is always impressive. Massive fruit on the nose and palate. Tannins are strong and get stronger with every glass. If tasted blind, there is no way I would have thought this was 2009. Impressive as always. (7389 views)
Tasted by Dasher on 7/28/2011 & rated 94 points: I think this wine is drinking better than the 2008 (7196 views)
Tasted by Gestalted on 7/25/2011 & rated 93 points: Very consistent with previous vintages, in fact almost identical. Ripe, liqueur like intensity, blueberry, coffee with savory herbs subtlety integrated. Nothing new or shocking here, however for those of us in love with Caymus, it's another winner!

Tasted by Hodby on 7/13/2011 & rated 90 points: Caymus trio tasting (Thousand Oaks, Ca): Very dark red-violet. Nose of heavy toast American Oak, with ripe plum, chocolate, raisin. Medium tannin, low acidity. Very oaky and a bit ponderous compared to the fuit intensity initially on the palate. Gets smoother with a couple hours airing, and chocolate covered red cherry fruit really comes forward. Tasted next to the '07 and '08, it's the hippo of the trio. (7744 views)
Tasted by rsbrew on 7/11/2011 & rated 93 points: Bought 6 bottles to cellar for at least 2 years, opened one just to make sure that the wine wasn't damaged (94 degrees when delivered). Pleasantly surprised, perfect for the age, powerful nose of dark chocolate with hints of vanilla and cherries, also picked up some sweet tobacco. Silky finish with subtle tannins. A young wine that will only get better with age! Looking forward to 2013! (7303 views)
Tasted by km5 on 7/9/2011 & rated 90 points: pleasant but is it worth the money? not as rich or dark as 08 but still enjoyable. (7054 views)
Tasted by km5 on 7/7/2011 & rated 92 points: like more than 2008, not as sweet nor as dark, but very chocolatey with hint of cherries...young taste, reminding of Spanish grapes. Downside is acidy initial taste. (6935 views)

Tasted by IWineAlot on 6/18/2011 & rated 94 points: Cali Cab tasting (Schaumburg Binny's): Great dark almost purple coloring. What a seductive nose; sweet cherries, chocolate. On the palate this wine was silky smooth, tannins were there but well hidden by lush dark cherries, chocolate and a beautiful vanilla/cake icing flavor. Very port like. This is a wine I could drink by itself all night long. Simply sexy. (7728 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
