 12/4/2011 (Westwood CC, Vienna VA)

  • 2007 Domaine Carneros Brut - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
fine bubbles, yeasty nose, crisp on the palate. Quite nice.
  • 2010 Solletico Prosecco - Italy, Veneto / Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Prosecco
tiny bubbles, very dry, not much fruit for a prosecco
  • N.V. Poema Cava Rosado - Spain, Cava
slightly off nose, with a palate full of fresh ripe strawberries
  • 2010 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio - Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Trentino, Valdadige
pale in color, light and a bit airy on the nose and palate. very soft, good Pinot Grigio typicity (87 pts.)
  • 2009 Long Boat Sauvignon Blanc - New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
blood orange/grapefruit notes dominate with some grassy undertones. quite drinkable but not inspiring. (85 pts.)
  • 2009 Wild Horse Chardonnay Unbridled Bien Nacido Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
rich and luxurious on the nose, with a rich buttery palate that gets just a bit flabby on the finish (88 pts.)
  • 2008 Matanzas Creek Winery Chardonnay Sonoma Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
the nose and palate were a huge dose of pineapple juice melon liqueur. For anyone who has ever been to the Tropical Isle in New Orleans' French Quarter, this is the Hand Grenade of wine. (Hand grenade = equal parts pineapple juice, sour mix, melon liqueur, and grain alcohol...) (85 pts.)
  • 2009 Merryvale Chardonnay - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
floral nose, restrained oak on the palate. really very very nice. (89 pts.)
  • 2007 Emeritus Vineyards Pinot Noir - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
faint strawberry nose, strawberry on the slightly thin palate. good but maybe a touch too sharp. (87 pts.)
  • 2009 Roth Estate Merlot - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
soft nose, not very open on this day, lovely soft vanilla palate. quite smooth. medium finish. (87 pts.)
  • 2007 Graffigna Malbec Reserve - Argentina, San Juan
pretty rich nose, deep purple fruit, mouth-puckering drying tannins. (88 pts.)
  • 2007 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
soft and smooth with a long, rich finish. notes of fresh blueberry. A huge winner at the price point. (90 pts.)
  • 2006 Conn Creek Anthology - USA, California, Napa Valley
rich, deep nose but too much overt alcohol on the palate which particularly dominates the finish. (87 pts.)
  • 2008 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley
soft and smooth, very dry, with deep purple fruit and a medium/long finish. quite nice. (90 pts.)
  • 2007 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
still seems closed and inexpressive to me. same as prior note. (86 pts.)
  • 2008 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
Man, I love the style of this producer. great stuff. smooth with layers and layers of depth. great mouthfeel - luxurious and deep. the fruit is fresh and ripe but balanced against the very subdued oak. just great. (91 pts.)
  • 2008 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
my third time tasting this wine, it is quite consistent. very dry with deep purple color. plum notes and strong tannic mouthfeel. delicious. (89 pts.)
  • 2009 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
After LOVING the 2008 vintage, I found this one to be disappointing. a bit closed up, but with vigorous swirling I got butterscotch, vanilla, and cherry cola. Cherry cola on the palate. Certainly nice, but just not as rich or smooth as Caymus usually is to me. (89 pts.)
  • 2007 Lancaster Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
If I had tasted this blind, I would have thought it was a malbec from argentina. A bit harsh, especially on the back of the palate. Importer conducting the tasting assured me this was a proper bottle but withholding rating as it seems like an outlier to me.
  • 2008 Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon C. C. Ranch - USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
sweet concentrated nose, smooth mouthfeel, youthful and a bit closed; would have liked to have had this decanted for a few hours and another taste. (91 pts.)
  • 2009 Michael-David Vineyards Zinfandel Earthquake - USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
I'm not a zin fan so no rating - but had to post a TN to report that, at least to me, this is not so much a wine as a big giant alcoholic cherry popsicle.
