Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 84 notes)

Tasted by oldcorke on 11/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Just beginning to drink. Characteristic earth, blood, iron, feral qualities. Rich, restrained dark fruit, abundant tannin & acid. Old forest fire charcoal finish... nearly suggesting mezcal. Neutral/no oak influence - as proper. (215 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 3/9/2021 & rated 86 points: Forgot about this one and it was surprisingly good. The tannins are still abit on the firmish side, but it has taken on some stewed fruit notes, which I don’t prefer, but all-in-all, not bad. (1454 views)
Tasted by Alaskawino on 2/22/2019: At Sam’s everyone likes this. Decanted and good for another year or more. (2128 views)
Tasted by Alaskawino on 3/10/2018 & rated 85 points: Medium purple going garnet. Black cherry and rasin with touch of tobacco and cedar. Pallet of black cherry pepper and spice. Acid is strong but tannins missing. Day:2 is very prune and rasin driven with some more tannins especially since the sediment boundary is rising. (2852 views)
Tasted by fwota on 9/3/2016 & rated 89 points: Drank with sous vide venison w/ a wild berry sauce. Great match. Nice plump red fruit, with balanced tannic structure. Edges had turned a little brick-colored, but mostly still had its deep dark color. (4669 views)
Tasted by reidan1@verizon.net on 12/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Plum and currant jam framed by leather, tobacco, menthol and savory BlackBerry seeds. Delicious, voluptuous and rich. Enough structure keeps it in check. Nice across all palates; almost liqueur like, but not too hot or syrupy. Agree, probably won't get any better, but continue to be impressed with what Spain provides for $15! (5245 views)
Tasted by EdKz@comcast.net on 10/26/2015 & rated 90 points: purple, medium body, aromas of plum and anise, dark fruits, earth, and wood with complex plum finish, a little alcohol... acids and tannins for a few more years ;fantastic value @ $11 (3704 views)
Tasted by Griffeyfan04 on 10/13/2015 & rated 90 points: $10 and aged 6 years and it is just right. Not going to get any better. But anvery pleasurable wine with some leather notes to go with the fruit (4011 views)
Tasted by Barrygloec on 10/9/2015 & rated 89 points: I enjoyed this. I might have gotten the price wrong. it's now $12.95 at Empire wine (3408 views)
Tasted by Redpig on 12/25/2014 & rated 90 points: Full bodied, blackberry, plums, nice finish (2729 views)
Tasted by Newval13 on 11/3/2014 & rated 91 points: Nose like plum jam on toast. Rich palate with lots of plum and blueberry, dry with sassy acidity and tannins and medium finish. (2703 views)
Tasted by EdKz@comcast.net on 8/29/2014 & rated 88 points: tawny/ruby, light/medium body, red licorice aroma after gas blow-off, lotta acid, good tannin, nice, but tart finish, better after an hour, suggest decanting for 1-2 hours; interesting wine, good value @ $9 (2762 views)
Tasted by wsellis on 3/15/2014 & rated 86 points: Cherry and blue berry nose with some anise and pepper. Blackberry and smokey tobacco on the pallet, with mild tannins. An interesting bottle, not tasted one like this before, but like it. Would buy this again and enjoy with a good cigar! (3541 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 2/27/2014 & rated 83 points: Decanted for an hour. Had with steak. New world. Too ripe and alcohol way too strong. Just so much heat. I love Spain but this could have been from anywhere. It does have a beautiful floral and fruity nose I'll give u that, but not my cup of tea. Too bad cuz the qpr could have been good. (3973 views)
Tasted by Graniwinkle on 12/26/2013 & rated 82 points: Dark plum. Nose:smoke, berries. Taste: crisp, medium body, toasted blackberry, smoke, dusty tannin, sweet spice. Finish: tar, chewy tannin, burnt berries. Tasty, not complex. (3279 views)
Tasted by bg3034 on 10/23/2013: PnP through Nuance Wine Finer. Dark dark red color. On the nose, blackberries, a little spice, a little oak, a little heat. On the palate, nice balance of dark berries, spice, a little tobacco and some earthiness. Mild tannins. Medium finish. Nice hedonistic daily drinker. 89 pts. Aloha! (3717 views)
Tasted by Altonplace on 9/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Significantly improved with 6 more mos of cellaring. Pepper, blackberry. (3129 views)
Tasted by Karah10 on 8/10/2013 & rated 84 points: Cherries and leather!
(2657 views)
Tasted by bubbachumps on 7/1/2013 & rated 87 points: I had a hard time with this wine. Came across very similiar to a large scaled Cali zin. Large extraction, super jammy, brambly nose. A bit over the top for me. There aren't many occasions where I don't like a Jorge Ordonez wine and this was not one of my favorites. (3501 views)
Tasted by Wolfgang on 5/23/2013 & rated 93 points: Explosive nose of fall baking spices and dark berries, delicious. (2954 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 5/23/2013 & rated 89 points: maroon in color. cherry, plum, floral, spice, on the nose. black currant, mushroom, earth, tobacco, cherry, oak, spice, on the palate. medium acid, mild tannins, on the finish. (3232 views)
Tasted by The_Grey_Fox on 5/10/2013 & rated 87 points: Odd spices, coffee, licorice, a bit baked. (2836 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 4/17/2013 & rated 89 points: red in color. cinnamon, spice, pepper, dark fruit, on the nose. currant, salt, pepper, tobacco, burnt wood, cherry, spice, earth, on the palate. medium acid, mild tannins, on the finish. (1570 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 4/1/2013 & rated 88 points: 2005 Chateauneuf du Papes (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Black fruited, deep, inky nose with light vanilla. Black plum, cassis and vanilla on the palate with light tannin. I'm generally an oakophobe but it's pretty well integrated here. Great QPR. (3275 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 4/1/2013 & rated 85 points: 2005 Chateauneuf-de-Pape (Tasted Blind) (Rich and Peggy's House, Los Altos, California): Subtle fruits on the nose. Some heat. Good wine. (3591 views)
Tasted by Cadby on 3/31/2013: 2009 Volver Tarima Hill +++ $10

Tasted by Ziggy on 2/24/2013 & rated 88 points: Good berry flavors, modest tannins, super value at $11. Solid finish, totally unexpected at this price. (2648 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 2/24/2013 & rated 89 points: Solid value. I find that Spain and the Rhone region of France are delivering the best values in the $10-$12 range. Nice fruit, medium finish, good with food. What more do you need? (2951 views)
Tasted by ScottPreston on 2/24/2013 & rated 87 points: A fine every day drinker. Too me the fruit seemed a little baked, and the wine had a lot of raisin flavors. I don't think this wine has great balance and should be consumed in the next 3 years. (3101 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 2/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Ripe black and blue berries, vanilla, licorice, soft smoke, spices and gamey notes. Nice package and well balanced. The depth, density and full mouth feel hangs on through the mid palate and finish. At $10 one of the better values to cross my palate in 2013. (2660 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 2/9/2013: Blind Tasting Spanish Reds (Home): 100% Monastrell. Black olive, black fruit nose, nice and savory. Black plum, earth, black olive, light oak, licorice. Dark and brooding but balanced and delicious. Great value. (my 1st, group's 3rd) (3067 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 2/3/2013 & rated 86 points: Lots of blueberry and blackberry, with a bit of a meaty backbone. The high alcohol comes through on the finish. Pretty much what you'd expect at this price - lots of up-front flavors with very little complexity. Value cocktail wine. (2415 views)
Tasted by Alain Harvey on 1/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Vivid ruby. Sexy black raspberry and oak spices on the nose, with notes of fresh rose and anise adding complexity. Sweet, sappy and expansive, offering lively dark berry preserve flavors and a velour-like texture. Graceful and balanced but also packs a punch. Finishes smooth, spicy and quite long. (2604 views)
Tasted by Levinsb on 1/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Deep dark and brooding. Smoky thick and satisfying on a winters night with hearty fare. A bit tight and clipped in the finish but no complaints here for a value priced bottle. I'll have more. (2665 views)
Tasted by The Necs on 1/5/2013 & rated 88 points: An excellent wine for the price. (3050 views)
Tasted by bigskymind on 12/12/2012 & rated 91 points: Brandied cherry and spice on nose...black fruit and well integrated tannic structure on palate...muscular and expansive with some focused depth... (3116 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 4/26/2012 & rated 89 points: A blockbuster of a wine offering a tremendous amount of tasty fruit and earthy supporting components. Gets a little fakey grapey at times, and the 15% abv shows itself at points. But my goodness - can you complain in the $8-$9 range? Silly value here. Silly. (4631 views)
Tasted by Mike Ritner on 4/23/2012: Inky black. Full bodied. Lots of dark fruit, smoke, and chocolate. Intense, very fruit forward, aggressive tannins. Great for those who like polished fruit bombs, but it is simple and lacks distinctiveness. (3874 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/13/2011: Doesn't even look like a Spanish wine. Smokey, meaty, chewy. Could be big cab, or a monster merlot, or pretty much anything. Works at $16 if you like this sort of thing. (4421 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 10/2/2011 & rated 90 points: Very nice fruit and complexity for a $15 price tag. (2107 views)

Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
