Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 402 notes)

Tasted by stschutz on 8/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Would agree with notes below. A wonderful surprise, no citrus but full of sweet honey and pears. Almost Sauternes-like, this was a lot of fun to sip.
There was definitely a sense of complexity in this wine after 11 years in bottle. With Katie and Tim. (437 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 1/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Pnp. Astonishingly fresh and vivid. Pretty gold, no hint of orange. Not even the tiniest bit of oxidation! Melons, pear and a nice floral touch on the nose. Super well balanced and deep honeydew melon, light grass and minerals on the palate. Smooth, long finish with bright acidity and complex richness. Wine of the night! Sure wish I had more!! (654 views)
Tasted by goodvitis.com on 11/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautiful nose of chamomile tea, guava, orange marmalade, lime curd, and wax. Medium bodied with big, round acid. Flavors include lime zest, pear, guava, kiwi, and mint. I love sauvignon blancs when they reach this stage of development. I'm not sure it's getting much better, but it's not nose diving either.  Tasted by sdahar on 4/18/2021 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well. (1299 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 6/10/2020 & rated 91 points: Full texture for SB; pear and nectarine with reasonable acidity; balanced, still in drinking window, goes down quickly (1635 views)
Tasted by sdahar on 5/30/2020 & rated 91 points: Much better than the last bottle I had last year. The wine showed good balance with a creamy mouth feel. Very well integrated but definitely at the end of the road. (1299 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 2/23/2020 & rated 92 points: I am surprised at just how good this is. I figured it would be a bit past it’s best. I was wrong. Rich SB, grippy and deep. Melon. Delicious. (92) (1349 views)
Tasted by kleinahoe on 8/18/2018: A little tired. (2280 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 3/30/2018: Never thought that a 2012 Sauvignon Blanc from Napa would hold this long. Well, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised given the name. This bottle is mature, shows a very slight amount of acidity on the front, but very "light" given the weight. Finished with more of a honeysuckle type of characteristic. Not a dessert wine by any stretch of the imagination. Just pretty amazed that a 6 year old SB could be drinking so well six years after bottling! (2792 views)
Tasted by Peianzhu on 3/10/2018 & rated 90 points: Room temperature (2476 views)
Tasted by sdahar on 11/23/2017 & rated 92 points: Had with the soup and salad course for Thanksgiving dinner. Worth the wait but hard to see much more improvement. Great balance of fruit and acidity that blended nicely (2904 views)

Tasted by Winiac on 10/7/2017 & rated 90 points: There seems to be a lot of inter bottle variability! Previous two bottles were somewhat unbalanced and hot, but this one is fairly balanced and delicious. (2459 views)
Tasted by Dan & Patti on 7/9/2017 & rated 95 points: Absolutely the best SauvBlanc available, floral notes with a long finish (2557 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 7/6/2017: Showing its age, but still drinkable and pleasant. (2485 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 6/20/2017 & rated 90 points: Floral with expressive bouquet, round. and full mouthfeel. Slightly hot (that makes me think twice about the score), but overall good wine. (2251 views)
Tasted by brminz on 5/28/2017 & rated 98 points: Still our favorite Sauvignon Blanc of all time. Full, rich, complex, extremely long finish. Paired great with a fennel, pear salad with creme fraise, olive, caper spread on brochette toast. (2391 views)
Tasted by pgm on 5/6/2017 & rated 90 points: Still got nice complexity, a bit of green grass and gooseberry, fennel spice, and apple. But it's not as lively as it once was. Drink these young. Drink this one soon. (2059 views)

Tasted by Quarked on 6/15/2016 & rated 93 points: California SB's don't get much better than this! (2481 views)
Tasted by WinthropT96 on 3/10/2016 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well. Nose is still strong with some mellon & kiwi. Less fruit in the mouth - more minerally. Oily texture but structure still there. Probably should have had it last year. (3594 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 3/7/2016 & rated 91 points: Smooth and luscious rather than crisp and herbal; gulpable (2890 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 2/21/2016 & rated 92 points: Tropical fruit, lemon, lime, grass, rose petals. Acidity crisp and well balanced. A-/A (3022 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 2/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Valentines Day : Bring a Bottle you LOVE (Jason and Mariellen's): This wine is richer and more round than almost all sauvignon blanc. The mouthfeel has weight. There is nice tropical fruit and a touch of citrus. There is a spice to it as well. It ends on a creamy finish. This tastes slightly oaked, and I like that. (3057 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 2/10/2016 & rated 88 points: PnP. Seems to be fading a bit. Drink up. (2546 views)
Tasted by Black Kat on 2/2/2016 & rated 92 points: Rich, full body, acidic yet with floral notes. Hints of tangerine and balsamic vinegar. Went perfectly with my garlic chicken dish. (2018 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 1/2/2016 & rated 91 points: A hint of grapefruit. Fruit nose. Smooth and more elegant (with some age) than my last bottle in Fall 2014. (2198 views)

Tasted by adam.dfarkas on 12/19/2015 & rated 93 points: Crisp, clear gold color. Aromas of pear, peach. Elegant wine. (2048 views)
Tasted by hiker_guy on 12/14/2015: My favorite Sauvignon Blanc in the new world. This was beautiful. The nose was lovely with a richness on the nose that is entirely uncommon. The palate was layered richness and the oak was entirely integrated with the fruit. Creamy yet crisp with a long lovely finish.
Will buy again. (2069 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 11/29/2015 & rated 91 points: Pale, grey-straw color. Spicy nose: melon, apple, grapefruit, wet clay pot, mango, vanilla, white pepper. On arrival, medium-low acidity; rounded, creamy mouth-feel. Bone dry and fruity in the mouth, high energy and ample richness in the finish. Fit well with leftover Thanksgiving turkey and sides, including the sweet potatoes. (2115 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 11/7/2015 & rated 92 points: San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 11/7/2015 (Grande Colonial Hotel (Nine Ten Restaurant), La Jolla, California): Clear light straw yellow. Smoky, musky (not musty) notes of lemon, grapefruit, and thyme, with a touch of cut grass. Delicious as usual. (2792 views)
Tasted by schott on 10/10/2015 & rated 91 points: At cool refrigerator temp - popped and poured. Light golden straw color. Tart apple and slight citrus nose. Very fruit strong, medium well balanced acid, light alcohol. This continues to be one of my favorite Sauv Blancs. (2423 views)
Tasted by suburbanfrog on 9/21/2015 & rated 94 points: My kind of style for Sauvignon Blanc. I could drink this all day. My score says it all about how I feel about this wine. (2442 views)
Tasted by jkscully on 9/2/2015: Primarily grapefruit and peach with a touch of minerality. Very fruity. If I had tasted this blind, I would have guessed it was a Gewürztraminer, with its opulent texture, exotic flavors, and hint of spice. (2646 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 8/10/2015 & rated 92 points: Amazing with fresh lobster and scallops from the Bay of Fundy. (2700 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 8/4/2015 & rated 93 points: Light color. Grapefruit and apple nose. Drank this with sea scallops and pasta at Circa 1886. Balanced, delicious, went well with the food. Although there is lots of grapefruit on the nose it is not overdone on the palate. Will seek out more (2703 views)
Tasted by behm0027 on 7/9/2015 & rated 89 points: On the nose, lemon peel, wet stone, toast, and a little straw along with subtle bright apple. Apple, pear, and slate on the palate. Nice acidity. Medium bodied. Well balanced Sauv Blanc...a touch too much ripe fruit on the finish...wish it was a little cleaner. Have to think it went through malo? (2657 views)
Tasted by jhemming on 7/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Nice SB. Citrus with stone fruits. Some secondary floral notes. Rounded body with good texture and persistent but not over powering acidity (2594 views)
Tasted by Jbird73 on 6/29/2015 & rated 91 points: Went very well with a red chicken curry dish. This is still after all this time my favorite SB. It's not my favorite varietal but I like this wine. No need to wait on this vintage...just pop and enjoy. (2361 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 6/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Citrus, grass, gooseberry, and minerals on the nose. Some honey and green apple on the palate. Good finish. (2121 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/10/2015 & rated 92 points: A Mostly French Wednesday Afternooner (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes plus. This was certainly the best example of this wine i've had to date. Really an eye opener with amazing depth and texture on the palate. But everything comes together here, from the captivating nose with earthy grip up front along with citrus, white peach, butter, and mineral to the round and rich palate with peach, citrus, lychee and earth wrapped around a mineral finish with tangy acidity. Probably about as good as domestic SB can get. (2817 views)
Tasted by garambler on 6/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Friends and I had this with dinner at the Purple Café on 6/6/15. It had a fresh, attractive bouquet of melon, apricot, kiwi and mineral aromas. The palate had good acidity and flavors that followed the nose. (1286 views)
Tasted by John Dunlap on 5/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Limited table side notes. Light color. A nice SB of compact flavors i.e., this wine remained restrained and did not possess any over the top flavors of grapefruit or grass. Perfect for sipping over lunch at Corks near Graton, south of Guerneville, CA. (2454 views)

Tasted by Uncle John on 4/27/2015 & rated 91 points: A lovely example of Sauvignon Blanc with crisp acidity balanced by some round sweetness on the finish. I prefer this on the colder side. (1928 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 4/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Bouquet of apricot, white flowers, lime, and lemon custard. Pear, melon, lemon and lime on the palate leads to a soft, creamy finish. Good acidic balance. Paired well with chicken fajitas. (1967 views)
Tasted by mhenry on 4/2/2015 & rated 90 points: Consistent year to year. (2165 views)
Tasted by wineguy1968 on 3/31/2015 & rated 92 points: Ive been drinking this for over a year and its picked up a silky creaminess that I typically would see in a nice chard. All they crisp fruit is still there pineapple, pear, grass. (2276 views)
Tasted by Duncan Wine on 3/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Pale bright yellow. Aromas of grapefruit and pepper. Strong pineapple and overly sweet on the palate when compared to previous bottles. Could have been it followed a syrah (out of sequence). This bottle was better when consumed with food. (2293 views)

Tasted by Tim Heaton on 1/8/2015: Pretty straightforward stuff, and honestly, arthrovine's note pretty much says it all. Served s/b/s with a 2011 Quintarelli Bianco secco, this was the lesser wine. A SB without enough acidity is an easy pass these days.

Served non-blind. (3350 views)
Tasted by smorris291 on 1/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Just really great. Not too puckery and grassy, but still had the stone fruit and citrus I love without too much oak (like many CA SBs). (2422 views)

Tasted by hiker_guy on 12/11/2014: Lovely rich wine with everything I like in Sauvignon Blanc. The oak I noted a year ago is fully integrated an complementary rather than over bearing as some can be.
The palate was rich and long. Complemented a roasted chicken perfectly.
Will buy again. (2206 views)
Tasted by cliffkol on 12/9/2014 & rated 92 points: Sonoma Valley - Tasted at winery: Tasted at the winery. Huge, room filling nose of floral aromas, stone fruits, grass.  Tasted by wjochim on 11/27/2014 & rated 92 points: One of my favorite SBs out there. Nice tropical fruit, well balanced and not too acidic. Excellent with a light meal, appetizers or just on its own. (2242 views)

Tasted by eluebchow on 10/22/2014 & rated 92 points: A concentrated and layered palate of lychee, passion fruit and pear with a lingering finish underscored by minerality; Quite different from the more herbal/grassy SBs, with a fuller-body and more depth of flavor; Very nice (2734 views)
Tasted by Bluffan on 10/20/2014 & rated 92 points: This is about the most complex wine I've ever drunk from this varietal. The reason: it contains 20% Sauvignon Musqué, "which adds floral aromatics and depth not present in other types of Sauvignon Blanc," according to the winery. (2438 views)
Tasted by River Rat on 10/12/2014: This ranks as one if my top Sauvignon Blanc experiences. From nose to finish it delivers citrus, melon, fresh flowers, a grassy tang and racy acidity. Vibrant and alive. Tops the Mondavi I Block To Kalons we had earlier in the year. Easy re-purchase. (2862 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 10/6/2014 & rated 91 points: Bouquet of tropical fruit, pear, lemon, lime, white flowers and cut grass. Melon, pear, lime and lemon custard on the palate lead to a soft, creamy, smooth finish. Good length with balanced acidity and minerality. Nice wine. Paired with sole and herb butter. (2467 views)
Tasted by Good Stuff on 10/3/2014 & rated 88 points: For no reason I can recall I recall some hype on this vintner which left me slightly disappointed after drinking the wine. The wine is good but I was expecting more. Maybe it was the happy naked women on the label that inflated my expectations. Oh well, the wine was heavier than French SB as to be expected, clean with just a hint of acidity, more peach flavor, soft floral bouquet, Chardonnay like golden hue. Enjoy (2325 views)
Tasted by Levinsb on 9/30/2014 & rated 94 points: Just beautiful balance of zesty fruit with juicy acidity and minerality. Love this stuff! (2330 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 9/27/2014: This seemed much more interesting than our previous bottle. Great citrus/lemon cake notes on the nose with a good serving of fruit. When this was too cold, it was a little closed, but after warming up just a bit, this displayed a lot of complexity: some minerality, great sour apple and high toned acidity on the palate. When it was out for a while and the temperature increased a more, it seemed really fruit forward (and significantly less complex), so perhaps we just served it too warm last time. (2151 views)
Tasted by DanielJ on 9/26/2014 & rated 92 points: Love this SB (1994 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 9/25/2014 & rated 92 points: PnP. Around cellar temperature. Light green-gold. Lovely nose of guava?, a little mint, more exotic than your typical SB. Bit racy on the palate with good acidity and some clear sweetness to the fruit. Consistently one of the most enjoyable SBs from California; lovely drink, if not at all profound. (2017 views)

Tasted by Aravind Asok on 7/23/2014: Opened a few days ago, and tried each day since. This is a very fruit forward sauvignon blanc. Sour apples and floral notes on the nose. Full bodied on the start, this balances out with great acidity. The acidity was still pronounced three days after opening, so I wouldn't be surprised if this could be aged a bit. (2085 views)

Tasted by DRK III on 7/17/2014 & rated 92 points: This is a great S.B. if you like Chardonnay. Rich in the mouth, but still possesses that lively acidity you would expect in such a wine. Nice fruit with all part integrated. Opened up nicely after a couple of hours. Don't serve too cold. Would like to put this up against Honig's S.B which I also really like. (1958 views)

Tasted by Racer117 on 6/8/2014 & rated 91 points: From a half bottle at the Hotel del Coronado's patio restaurant. It was the only reasonably thing priced on the menu, $35/375ml. Was eying Conundrum White for $54/750ml but decided to... PASS!

Nice nose that's lacking in the typical grapefruit elements I often detect in SB but there were some exotic floral notes and some cut grass; citrus dominated body with minerals and some potpourri(?). Year in and year out this is a wonderfully balanced wine.

I am always curious how they get this label released as well. Oh the scandalous risqué pornography of it!

Tasted by budh on 5/14/2014 & rated 91 points: A very lovely, refreshing SB, even if not very typical. This doesn't have the high acidity, grassy or gooseberry SB characteristics. But it is textured, almost full bodied, and has a finish that goes on and on. Pineapple and white peach dominate, with some stoney minerality, vanilla, yeast, and a hint of herbaceousness. Somewhat similar to Joseph Phelps SB, with the texture from sur lie aging and tropical fruit. (2125 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 5/11/2014 & rated 91 points: Nose: Pineapple, White Peach and Meyer Lemons with a nutty note to the wine. Palate: Delivers a tropical fruit experience with some pineapple and almost a mango note. Very fresh with good acidity. Finish: Supple and rounded with oak. Acid is tame on the finish.

Great wine year in and year out. (2402 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 5/9/2014 & rated 92 points: PnP. Light yellow; intense nose of tropical fruits, gunflint, and sweet fruit. Unctuous on the palate but with enough acidity to prevent it from being flabby; has a goes down like water quality. This wine is always a hit and seems to have settled down over the last 6 months. A real crowd pleaser. Great QPR. (2147 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 5/4/2014 & rated 91 points: just delicious on a warm sunny evening with friends. a more rounded and full bodied SB that's not intensely grapefruity. (2182 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 5/3/2014 & rated 91 points: Served slightly below cellar temperature (50-52F). Aromas of melon, tropical fruit, grapefruit, apricot, vanilla custard and coconut. Melon, apricot, grapefruit and lime dominate on the palate and lead to a long, soft finish. Velvety smooth mouth feel that is a touch light on the acidic balance but still quite refreshing and food friendly. An outstanding Cali SB. Paired well with marinated, grilled chicken. (1986 views)

I guessed Sauvignon Blanc with one sniff. This was all SB on the nose. I started to second guess myself a little as the color is a little darker than your typical SB. And this had a bigger, richer palate too - but without overdoing it on the grassy flavors you sometimes get from New Zealand SB's. Very nice. (3024 views)

Tasted by docvino on 12/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured on Christmas eve. Merry Edwards delivers a consistent SB vintage over vintage. Inviting nose. Mostly citrus of which get hints of grapefruit and melon as well as a tiny bit of fresh lemon zest on the finish. (2006 views)

Tasted by George Lopez on 11/28/2013 & rated 95 points: I know that wine critics can't seem to score SB wines very high, but this SB is the best of its breed, and thus worthy of a high score. It's beautifully balanced with good acidity. This wine is tart, but finishes nice and long without a sour finish. Above all this wine is juicy--as if you bit down on a piece of fruit and the juice just exploded in your mouth. Great stuff. (2277 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 11/27/2013 & rated 91 points: A gorgeous Sav. Blanc, beautiful straw grass color with great depth, acidity and a clean lingering palate. Our 3rd bottle of the 2012. This vintage expresses a much stronger citrus component then previous years. Big grapefruit and mango flavors up front, perfect acidity with a clean lingering citrus finish. Recall past vintages having greater minerality. Would love to see how these taste with a few years on them, but can't keep them in our cellar that long - guess we just need to buy more. (2210 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 11/22/2013 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Aromatic nose; rich but with just enough balancing acidity and residual sugar. This has really come together since the last bottle I opened. Not a sophisticated wine but a great crowd pleaser. (2390 views)

Tasted by tantotinto on 11/18/2013 & rated 90 points: I have been a fan of this wine since my first bottle in 2007. This is the first from the 2012 vintage. One of its strengths has been its consistency from year to year. My palate could be having an off night but this bottle seems to come up a little short. It just misses hitting its usual balance. Still good but less magic than usual. (2162 views)

Tasted by Jbird73 on 10/28/2013 & rated 91 points: Same as before with note on food pairings as follows:
Do not pair with grilled fish fajitas...the acid in the wine was not good when competing against the acidity in the grilled fish with salsa. Do pair with roasted brussel sprouts...wouldn't have guessed it but the acidity of the wine was complemented by the strong taste of a roasted brussel sprout with garlic...very good! (2408 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 10/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Merry Edwards Tasting (Santa Rosa, CA): I really dig Merry's Pinots, but, as usual, the Sauvignon Blanc takes the cake for me. Awesome aromatics: sweet guava, orange blossom, white pepper, all deep and complex. Bold and creamy on the palate, but some balanced acid as well. I love the guava, pineapple, white peach and lychee fruit. Notes of hazelnut, rosemary and white pepper add lots of complexity. For $33 at the winery, this is a no-brainer. Consistently my favorite American Sauvignon Blanc. (2725 views)
Tasted by hiker_guy on 10/26/2013: nose is nicely complex. Shows toasty oak scents with good, crisp grassy/limey notes that point to Sauv Blanc

Tasted by joraesque on 8/5/2013 & rated 92 points: Out of a half bottle: The nose began opening after about 20 minutes. Distinctive flavors of ripe keylime. Finishes nicely with very slight tartness. The Sauvignon Musque in the blend is quite noticeable, and adds a nice degree of elegance. One of the best California Sauvignon Blancs I have ever tasted. It helped that it comes from a cooler climate, and is therefore not over the top. Very well done throughout. Probably drink by 2014. (1967 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 8/1/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice tropical sauvignon blanc from ME that has a roundness and balance not found in any other SB on the market. Really nice as usual. For me I need to be in the mood for this as the richness sometimes catches me off guard. (2132 views)

Tasted by stevenjstein on 7/28/2013: Didn't really try it enough for a detailed tasting note or rating, but do recall it was pretty much a typical Merry Edwards Sauv Blanc.  Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 7/4/2013 & rated 93 points: Merry Edwards has consistently demonstrated a deft hand in creating wines from this varietal. The 2012 offering is no exception. Straw-colored and intensely fragrant, it exudes pear, fig, melon and hay aromas. Fresh, medium-bodied and equally impressive on the palate, the wine flaunts flavors which mirror the nose, framed by light oak and well-integrated alcohol. The middle palate is solid and leads to a lengthy, crisp finish. Bravo for another beautiful example of what this grape can achieve! Enjoy it with or without food over the next three years. Drink now-2016. (2163 views)

Tasted by Scott Butler on 6/13/2013: My first 2012 ME SB, and it seems to be another winner. Creamy, citrus/tropical fruits - it does need 15 or so minutes of air to come together, but then it drinks great. (1907 views)

Tasted by dbkitc on 5/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Light straw with a touch of green. Not as overtly citrusy as past vintages. This is creamier and a bit fuller on the nose. Palate is rich and balanced. Good precision yet not at all sharp as there is a sweet lychee fruitiness that really balances everything out. I like this even better than I normally do which is high praise. (92) (2032 views)

2012 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaker's Commentary
The bountiful vintage of 2012 took all of us here in Sonoma County by surprise -- we really didn’t believe the crop would be as large as it looked hanging on the vine! Intellectually, I understand that Sauvignon Blanc, as a varietal, can produce large crops of high-quality fruit. A harvest like this just hasn’t happened for a very long time here in our cool valley. Even more unbelievable is the resulting superb quality.

The rich core of this flavorful wine is fruit sourced from vines 25-35 years old. That 54% is complemented by 20% Sauvignon Musqué, which adds floral aromatics and depth not present in other types of Sauvignon Blanc. The remainder is the classic Shenandoah selection, or Clone 1, prevalent throughout California.

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
