Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 94 notes)

Tasted by RichardP on 3/13/2024 & rated 92 points: When first opened, this was a pale yellowish-pink. As it breathed, it gradually turned deep red. Decanting is recommended due to heavy sediment. This showed plum and raisin on the nose; on the palate, plum, black cherry, prune, and notes of rose petal, raisin, and light earthy spice, with moderate sweetness and moderate acidity on the medium to long finish. This might have improved with more air, but due to the number of guests it didn't last long. It was a good value at about $60. (516 views)
Tasted by KVM on 12/28/2023: This has been in my cellar for 20+ years. Set upright last week it pours very clear as a medium red to orange- red. Smells of light red berries, spearmint and light oxidation. Berries and cocoa in the mouth. I like this level of sweetness. We'll drink the rest of the bottle tomorrow nite. (791 views)
Tasted by Milos on 12/16/2023 & rated 94 points: No detailed notes taken. Company’s Christmas dinner. This drank just as I had hoped. Still showing lots of dark red and black fruit but somewhat subdued, with added complexity of wood, marzipan and chocolate. (593 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux_Jon on 9/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Half bottle. Substantially better than the 1994 and 1997 tasted besides, though maybe aeration will help? This vintage actually smells like aged port, though in a Zalto burgundy glass my wife felt the alcohol was very noticeable. (1198 views)
Tasted by scottesterly on 3/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted 4 plus hours as of now. Deep & rich cherry flavor profile. An underrated port. 92 points. (1838 views)
Tasted by paintinginacave on 12/26/2022 & rated 94 points: Stood up for two weeks. Decanted for hour hours. Drank over four days. A medium ruby core fading to a pale ruby outer edge. Upon opening the aromatic equivalent of liquid black cherry frangipani. Once the initial burst of black cherry and marzipan had subsided chocolate coated raisins emerged. A truly glorious nose that’s both intense and subtle and displays a supreme purity and delineation of aromas. The palate is every bit as impressive - it’s rich and concentrated without ever overstepping the mark, is texturally silken, and drinks like raisins steeped in cherry-infused brandy with sweet baking spices. (2066 views)
Tasted by cfwine on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Dense, rich, very nice poise between sugar and tang. Superb balance. A huge mouthful of damson plums. This is a big wine—there are no thin spots at all. Tannins fully integrated. On the sweet side even for vintage port.
Decanted ~eight hours. It started off just a little hot, but the alcohol settled down quickly, and it drunk beautifully the whole evening. The couple of glasses we saved for day two were just as good, maybe better, because the plums had backed off a little and allowed a touch of spice to come forward.
I’ll happily give my other two bottes some more time—it’s not going anywhere.
Will it get any better? I dunno. It’s aromatically pretty straightforward—not a bad thing, this is very good wine, but there is nothing beguiling or revealing here. (1729 views)
Tasted by Loathesome on 8/28/2022 & rated 90 points: Deep red. A very well balanced port and very typical of graham in terms of sweetness and length. My only reservation with this house is always the lack of grip and a bit of character. It is all rather perfecta and smartly dressed but a bit dull in that way. (2594 views)
Tasted by DUNCANSWI on 2/4/2022: With Dave and Carol (2889 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 11/25/2021 & rated 95 points: Nickolls and Perks 30th Anniversary tasting of Symington's Vintage Ports (Zoom): A bright, crystal clear maturing appearance.
A rich nose with blacker, more opulent fruit than the four preceding 1991 vintage ports. There's some chocolate, some black plums stuffed with a vanilla-prune paste, some black olive, a hint of eucalyptus, and a touch of oak furniture polish. Very aromatic on the nose, and after a while it starts to feel almost a little cakey, initially almost a Victoria sponge cakiness, but then, with time and aeration, more definite hints of Black Forest Gateau, including a hint of kirsch/vieille prune.
Initially the alcohol is much more noticeable than the first four ports tasted today, with a touch of heat on the finish. After some time, it starts to feel nicely together on the palate, but it also really feels quite youthful, and still has plenty of structure.
This will probably last the longest on today's five ports, although at the moment it's not the most enjoyable. (2877 views)
Tasted by derekjohn on 1/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Very pale, almost kerosene (paraffin) pink. Remarkable power and concentration still. (3553 views)
Tasted by prof b on 11/4/2020: 375. Opened and consumed over an hour. Nice balance between fruit, sweetness, and acidity. Very nice. (3789 views)
Tasted by devraj on 10/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Dark ruby in color. Aromas of reddish black fruits like plums, prunes, spice box, tobacco leaves and violets. The palate shows silky and sweet dark red berry compote, graphite, celery seed, resolved tannins, medium acidity and a long perfumed and sweet finish. Nice. (3175 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 2/18/2020 & rated 91 points: From 75cl, spongey cork extracted with difficulty, decanted 2 hours. Better than my previous bottle (TN 30.10.2019) — more concentrated, a hint of racy acidity, more lively tannins. Taste profile identical, love those plums with cinnamon spice. 91(-92)P (3900 views)
Tasted by derekjohn on 1/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Still looking young. Fantastic perfumed nose. (3431 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 12/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Clear light red/brown. Light earthy brown sugar and fig nose. More lively flavours of fig, beef. and plums. The finish is long textured and a bit hot. (3064 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 12/15/2019: Jim's bottle. Medium color, soft tannins, browning edges, with chocolate, caramel, raisins and hazelnuts. Sweet but not as sweet on the attack as is typical of Grahams. Really good, though. (2670 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 10/30/2019 & rated 90 points: From 75cl, exemplary provenance. V. good cork extracted without difficulty. Decanted 1 hour and followed over a further 2 hours. Rose-water and candied violets on the nose; light-bodied entry with medium sweetness and monolthic mid-palate with Victoria plum notes and quite some cinnamon; tannins almost completely resolved, just an appealing touch of furriness on the finish. Missing the profundity recorded by others here. If this improves over the next few days, I'll correct this note accordingly. If not, not. 90P

Update 31.10.2019 A bit more open and generous after 24 hours. The plum/cinnamon combo is very moreish. Edging towards 91P (2951 views)
Tasted by devraj on 4/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Brick red in color. Aromas of blue and black small fruits, violets, celery seed and incense. Medium bodied palate shows viscous and silky sweet fruit, graphite and a long cedar and floral filled finish. (2746 views)
Tasted by gzim on 3/3/2019 & rated 90 points: Double decanted at 12pm to bring to a dinner (far away)... showed pretty well that night. Night 2 it seemed to get bigger in every way, yes its a Lighter Fruited Vintage... the Port is more transparent, but it is beautiful. Now on night three, its still showing very nice sweet fruit, but seems to be getting more simple - but still lovely to drink. (2802 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 11/25/2018: CK with Dan, Jon and Nesli. From 375. Opened and decanted at the beginning of dinner. Medium intensity, not much heat and quite a nice drink after dinner. (3029 views)
Tasted by oncocyte on 11/25/2018 & rated 94 points: Sweet. Tannins soft to resolved. Lovely drink. (2925 views)
Tasted by Timmyd on 2/10/2018 & rated 93 points: Delicious wine, tried a few 94 and 97's in the past year, all very good but this 91 is easily the top one. Showing some maturity but a lot left in the tank (4030 views)
Tasted by schoonbeke on 1/15/2018 flawed bottle: From a half bottle. I opened this in the afternoon. Very light color, very transparent, even more than the 85. It tasted good from the start, though very sweet, like a wonderful candy. Continued to be extremely enjoyable, easy and pleasant to drink, through the evening, and I had to restrain myself from finishing it. At that point I would have rated it better than the 85. But the next day, after being kept in s stoppered decanter, it had developed that very unpleasant taste and smell that sometimes occurs with ports after day one. Some of that blew off, but not all. The wine would have become less sweet on the tongue, richer, fuller and perhaps more complex on the second day, but because of the unpleasant taste and smell that remained I couldn't appreciate it. (3555 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 1/13/2018 flawed bottle: Graham/Barton tasting-cum-lunch (Restaurant Bak, Amsterdam, NL): Oxidative and vegetal. Two bottles with (alas) consistent impressions. (4599 views)
Tasted by derekjohn on 12/25/2017 & rated 94 points: Slightly ageing edge colour, a pink-purple colour.. Nose of rich fruit cake. Beautifully rounded out on the palate, drinking perfectly. Oily/buttery mouthfeel; figs, dark chocolate, citrus elements at edge. Good length. (2456 views)
Tasted by gzim on 12/11/2017 & rated 90 points: On the lighter side, popped and poured. Will check in again tomorrow. Nice wine at the end of dinner. (3390 views)
Tasted by rwgray on 12/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Spectacular port. At least as enjoyable as my 77 Taylor. Perfect age as well. Makes me think I should start on my 94s. (3037 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 11/11/2017 & rated 93 points: Celebrating Good Health (R&D's): From 750ml. Aromas of chocolate and red berry fruit. Red and black fruit, plum and spice in the finish. Wonderful. The more I try from Graham, the more I find that I enjoy the house style. Plenty of time here, but beginning to enter a nice window. (2932 views)
Tasted by swade on 10/6/2017 & rated 92 points: Brick dust color. Fine aromas of raisins and brandy - snapdragon. This brings some heat too. Silky. Opens with orange rind, brandy, prunes and coffee. Light body. Some surprise at the light color and body. Fine boned. The older I get, the more I like port and champagne. This was quite good and a real treat. 92 (2880 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 8/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Red fruit preserves - raisins, raspberries, black cherries. Also baked cake and tea leaves . Great right now. (1306 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 6/26/2017 & rated 89 points: Reticent nose -- like an alcoholic rum cake. Soft and pretty on the palate with pure black cherry. Not very powerful, not very complex. An overrated port for me, yet it's still very tasty -- I almost scored it a 90. (3767 views)
Tasted by Trudy2015 on 4/17/2017 & rated 96 points: Absolutely gorgeous right now. Gave it a 4-5 hour decant and everyone at the dinner was floored by the quality and depth. Very nice wine right now. Hard to beat this. (3711 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 10/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Browns suck, wines don't (Let's Try French Wines this time) (Our home): Last wine of the night. Sitting with neighbors outside next to the fire on a cool autumn night. This was from a half bottle that had been standing up. A decant would have been a good idea, but it was not going to happen. I poured out four equal glasses and told every one to swirl. There was a couple ounces left when we were cleaning up, it had an amazing amount of sediment left in the bottle. With enough air, the wine is purple in color. The nose has milk chocolate covered raisins and lots of raspberries. Slightly sweet on the palate. Nice complexity but not amazing. I have a bunch more of these and will give one the proper air soon, just for scientific purposes. That said, it was delicious and a very nice end to a very nice evening. (5176 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 9/18/2016 & rated 93 points: Drinking very well, has a nice light feel to it. (4513 views)
Tasted by WineGold on 5/22/2016 & rated 93 points: Very good. Cherry, blackberry, figs, raisins. Lacks the depth and precision of some of he greater vintages, but for the price, this is very nice. Guests were pleased, and now on night 2 so are we (again!). (4826 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 1/23/2016 & rated 91 points: Decanted, of course, but I should have stood this up for more than 24 hours as the wine was still cloudy. Fresh but quiet on the nose. Sweet grape and plum on the palate. Very smooth and pleasant but less complex than I remember the '94 being. (4816 views)
Tasted by tomred on 12/31/2015 & rated 94 points: Brick red still just a tinge of purple, lots of legs.
Initially nose a little closed, opens up as the glass is warmed in the hand.
Black fruits, plumbs, damsons, toffee, polished leather.
Good structure and extra length. will be good for several more years (If only I can keep my hands off!) (4497 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 12/24/2015 & rated 93 points: The great thing about port is that it seems so consistent. This was a great bottle. Had it with a series of friends who hadn't had an aged port before. Lots of positive comments - and it went very fast. This still tastes like a mid aged port. Still a lot of fruit but the leather and tobacco starting to become more prominent. Great wine. (3875 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 11/25/2015: Deep ruby red colour. Blackberries and violets on the nose. Firm taste of rich succulent fruit, with hints of blackberries and violets. A vintage that is starting to drink very well, but will also repay further storage in the cellar. Great with chocolate or by itself. (498 views)
Tasted by tom_wine on 10/19/2015 & rated 89 points: Ripe, seasoned fruit, long and intense finish. Years left. (4004 views)
Tasted by Zazzaman on 10/5/2015 & rated 94 points: The last half bottle drank from a case of halves and bottles bought to celebrate my daughter's Izzy's birth. It has been lovely port even through her teens when she was only consuming a sip, and still excellent some 24 years later. Graham's I have found is a sweeter style of port with plenty of layers of flavours, without being too dense. In fact they are both lovely! (3570 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 2/16/2015 & rated 94 points: Induction and Elevation Dinner Chaîne des Rôtisseurs (The Drake Hotel Chicago, IL): Bright ruby color, every so sweet with a wonderful finish and really complimented the dessert. (4437 views)

Tasted by levinml on 1/1/2014 & rated 93 points: First bottle at home of vintage port. Drank at end of dinner with friends, with lots of pinot and with pumpkin cheesecake desert. This was excellent finish to the evening, and may get me hooked on stickies for late in the evening as opposed to more big dry reds. Sweet, but not too sweet and offset with something that kept it in balance. Can't wait to try something considered mid to upper 90s. (4900 views)
Tasted by Ben Williamson on 12/20/2013 & rated 96 points: This was an excellent port. Rich sweet fruit with excellent balance. Writing this 1 year late so can't remember exactly! (2950 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 12/16/2013: Young on the nose, a bit boring and one dimensional. Good fruit, medium body. (4260 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 11/12/2013 & rated 89 points: Creamy and smooth. Long finish with raisin and hazelnuts. At its peak. Just starting to dry out a little. Drink up. (4256 views)
Tasted by drunken sommelier on 12/26/2012 & rated 88 points: It was a nice port although mostly one-note - licorice root with a little blackberry. Weighty. (5762 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 9/28/2012 & rated 93 points: Beautiful Port. Light in color. Full in flavor. Characteristic Graham sweet flavor. (5484 views)
Tasted by smcilhen on 9/27/2012: Best of the Best Tasting (Binny's Lincoln Park): Very smooth and not as sweet as I was expecting. In a great drinking window right now, but could certainly go another 10 years or so. Enjoyable! (6110 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/25/2012: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Rich & Dana's): Cranberry red color. Lovely blackberry and dark fruit notes, hints of cherry and plum. Youthful, with red and black fruit and hints of choclate and cherry. Long finish. Hold for a couple of years yet. (6992 views)
Tasted by vindictive on 1/16/2012: Seems too sweet and very young. A bit hot with figs, raisins and spice. Not so great now, but perhaps it will improve with many years in the bottle. Does not taste like a great vintage port at present. (6476 views)
Tasted by pmk on 11/26/2011 & rated 90 points: not a blockbuster (5390 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 9/4/2011: Dark garnet with sediment clinging to the glass. Quite a rich sweet raisin fruit and cherry nose. Lush flavours and still a fair bit of grip. Sweet long finish. Very good and a long way to go. (5296 views)
Tasted by Zazzaman on 9/2/2011 & rated 94 points: Colour maturing to orange / brown tints. Lovely sweet jammy Christams pud nose, fabulous taste with toffee, raisins, caramel sweetness, backed by mixed spice and tarragon. Very long. I wonder if this is less advanced than the bottles I have, and therefore a bit fresher and a point now. (5376 views)
Tasted by Mark Larson on 4/17/2011 & rated 91 points: Classic aged vintage port. Needs a bit more time. 2-8 years. (5965 views)
Tasted by costamalfitana on 4/1/2011 & rated 91 points: very pale in color; nice smell of raisins, chocolate, elegant, not a blockbuster on the palate; fine fully mature, for some time I guess; should be drunk, soft and smooth, no powerhouse but a very nice vintage port in a lighter style. (5953 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 3/13/2011 & rated 90 points: Surprisingly pale; vivacious nose, specious fruitiness, but has a flat spot; spirity, red currants, cherried, lean- not overly sweet; attenuated/ edgy feel to finish. Not a pristine bottle? Every indication this will age 10+ years. (5998 views)
Tasted by Tarrant on 2/12/2011 & rated 92 points: Fine porto, really tasty and a bit more aged than I would have expected, amazing quality, but really didn't blow my socks off - Dark, full bodied with a nose of extreme plum, raisin, syrup, chocolate and vanilla, very well structured, not overly complex, silky smooth, sweet on the palate with excellent length (92 Points). (6102 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 12/30/2010: From 375ml. Brick disc. Great nose, an admirable spice component, raisin but not too sweet - pretty much in line with what would be expected from a 20 year old vintage port. Note of cough syrup on the palate which wasn't optimal, but not offensive either. Great followup to the wines this evening and went very well with an aged Stilton.

Tasted by KPB on 6/28/2010 & rated 93 points: A VP dominated by white chocolate. Still very young, sweet and a bit hot. Nose could be a melted Lindt white chocolate bar, but if you think about it you realize that this screams red current, vanilla, cherries. Sweet, rich, long. Quite good-- way better than I expected, I may buy more. (7124 views)
Tasted by crawford on 1/3/2010 & rated 92 points: Very nice, abit light, lots ot time in hand, probably even better in 10 years. (7345 views)
Tasted by City Wine Journal on 1/1/2010 & rated 94 points: This is an unconventional read on this very nice port. Bottle was opened for our wedding Feb 15, 2008. Returned home and saved remainder into heavy glass decanter with stopper, and stored it on a low shelf. Wanting to now use that decanter for a different port, there was a glass remaining of this 1991, nearly two years later. The bottom of the glass was completely saturated with fine silt, leaving a clear ruby glass that was wonderful. It appeared to be preserved, with no oxidation or other faults detectable. Quite full, long, darkly scented with ripe fruit, chocolate raisins, and warm tobacco. Obviously an unexpected surprise. Perhaps it speaks to the incredible longevity of these amazing wines, and the preservation qualities of the fine precipitated tannins. Remarkable. (7353 views)

Tasted by thenapalist on 10/31/2008 & rated 93 points: I bit more aged than I would have expected. There was a very tawny nose to this one. The juice, however, was pure vintage port with a slight degree of heat but very young fruit. I'm not sure that this one will age as gracefully as the 77s, 94s or 97s but overall, a nice drink. Not worth seeking out and paying a premium but enjoyable none-the-less. (8419 views)

Nose: coffee, dark chocolate, dried fruits
Palate: This wasn't overall sweet and heavy like other ports I've tasted. It's very complex, elegant, a hint of liquorice, it's an iron fist in a velvet glove. After taste is like an never ending marathon.
EXELLENT!!!!! (8079 views)
Tasted by Vine on 1/29/2006: Opened and decanted Friday afternoon - Friday evening - very subdued nose, somewhat short and sharp on tasting. Saturday evening - much more developed nose, very expressive. In the mouth, richer, longer. Graham's is my favourite Port house but right now, althought the 1991 is very good, it was somewhat underwhelming. Perhaps it's too young. We'll see - still 3 bottles to enjoy over time. (9239 views)
Tasted by Lorien on 6/26/2005: boring! Yes.. too young, but so boring. I am starting to think Port isn't for me, or maybe I am not for Port. (13201 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 5/5/2005 & rated 93 points: This port was consumed at our wine tasting. It went beautifully with the Godiva dark chocolates. It is mature and ready to drink. It was one of the highlights of this fun evening filled with Pinot, Port, Cheeses, Chocolate and Cigars. (6914 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 12/18/1996 & rated 91 points: Bought three half bottles at $12 each and opened one to enjoy with walnuts and almonds, nose of raisin, dried tea, fig, plum and sage, more of the same on the palate, medium/big body, tasty, needs time, nice finish. (2281 views)

Graham Porto Vintage

In the earlier part of the 20th century, this wine was bottled with different labels. Within the same vintage and the same wine, it would be labeled "Vintage" and "Finest Reserve" depending on where it was released and who the distributing agent was.

For consistency's sake, we have opted to use only the "Vintage" name for this wine. That is what Graham has settled on going forward. Searching for "Graham's Finest Reserve" will lead to this entry.

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
