Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 104 notes)

Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 9/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle. Deeper than the 05 and 10 along side with very pretty nose - some honey, floral. Palate is crisp, pollen, florals, tart green apple, maybe a bit of peach. Salty minerals. A bit of lemon, bit of salty popcorn. Finish is tart and salty (would guess Chenin).
Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20. (935 views)
Tasted by coremill on 8/31/2022 & rated 91 points: Deep yellow color. Structurally more relaxed and less zingy than younger vintages, but still with plenty of granitic material. Superb pairing with oysters (of course), which brings out the wine's length and amplifies the rocky core. (796 views)
Tasted by viniferatu on 8/30/2021: Out of magnum, didn't take a note, but man was this fresh, complex and intense. Not even close to tired. Truly amazing Muscadet. (1378 views)
Tasted by S.Wayne on 2/8/2021 & rated 91 points: Single blind tasting
Pale gold
Aromatics medium. Rock, wax, wool
Palate medium +. Acid medium + with crescendo aspect. No phenolics. Yellow apple, salt, ripe lemons and minerals
Finish has medium length. Rounded mouthfeel, but balance is towards the acid
Dry glass notes of rocks and salt
Can drink now, but despite the age still has the acid to cellar further (1441 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 2/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Pale gold color
Medium minus aromas - wool/ wax and intense minerality with underlying cheese rind character - really no fruit at all on the nose
Palate is another thing entirely - ripe lemon and grapefruit and intense salinity - linear mouthfeel but with nice rounded edges
Medium plus acidity which really crescendos in a Chenin Blanc fashion
Medium alcohol and no noted phenolic bitterness
Nice long finish - wow
Dry glass aromas of dry rocks and salt
I personally find few wines which give me such pleasure at this price - aged Muscadet has to be one of the most underrated drinking experiences out there
Drinking very well now, but with really NO signs of oxidation, I can see this going forever (1470 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 1/21/2021: From magnum. Crisp & briny on the nose, and that sense follows through on the palate. A lengthy finish I am still tasting as I type this. Lively acidity - very nice tonight. (1157 views)
 Tasted by David_K on 1/20/2021 & rated 92 points: What drwine2001 said. (1105 views)
Tasted by coremill on 1/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Superb, full of sea spray and crushed rocks and oyster blood. Not a lot of fruit but so much other stuff going on. V. good length. Easily on the level (if slightly different in style) of high-end 1er Chablis. (941 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/7/2020: Full yellow. Lemony, stony goodness with unusual amplitude and mouth feel for Muscadet. Enormously impressive for a $21 bottle at age 13.

Just as fresh the second night-amazing stuff (1455 views)
Tasted by bags on 4/19/2020: excellent, but a bit more linear than what I had expected. might even improve.

second night: put on a lot of weight and depth. just terrific. (952 views)
Tasted by vulgar little monkey on 2/1/2020 flawed bottle: Corked magnum. Damn, this has been such a towering version of this wine in the past. Oh well, hopefully someone will share a bottle with me one day as I'm out. (1132 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/18/2019: Full yellow now. Lemony, stony, fantastic texture and palate coverage for a Muscadet. Maturing but still going strong. Every time I taste it, I think of what a great substitute it is for much higher priced Premier Cru Chablis. (1580 views)
Tasted by James Kim on 4/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Wine Tasting Group - No Theme - Apr. 13, 2019 (Classic Dallas): PnP. Chalky rocks and stones with grapefruit, herbs, and a hint of honeysuckle. Again, the mouthfeel is creamier than in its youth but still with excellent, lively acids. Excellent depth. Really get a sense of the granite that the grapes were grown on. (1486 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 9/19/2018 & rated 87 points: I've had this wine 5 times over the years from my cellar and this was my least favorite to date. Golden yellow in color. No noticeable nose. Missing the sea and salinity of prior bottles. Palate intensely mineral. Heavy. Showing its age. Missing the wonderful balance of prior bottles. Just ok. (1557 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 8/29/2018: I think I had 2 different bottlings of 07 Granite de Clisson and not sure which I drank last night, but quite good, very dry and minerally and aging very well. Outstanding value for high class white wine (1473 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 7/14/2018: Showing no signs of slowing down, this strutting peacock is magnificently balanced with Grand Cru weight, intensity and depth. Giant, bone-crushing, crashing waves of salty granitic lemon goodness. Just brilliant wine. (1849 views)
Tasted by tdelorme on 7/24/2017: Down to 4 bottles, don't touch this for 2-3 years. This bottle is probably the best bottle I have had to date and certainly among the best bottles of muscadet I have ever had. The fact that this retailed for under $25 makes it one of the best values ever. Very enjoyable and memorable bottle of wine. (2574 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 6/19/2017: This wine was fantastic. Selected to go with clams in white wine with garlic and saffron and simple pan seared Alaska halibut showered with green herbs. It really loved the herbs and cut through the clam broth very nicely. Greenblanket thinks that this bottle is still showing its vigorous youth with maybe just a bit of broadening richness. He is also glad he has a few more bottles. Two of which will go into the deep science closet. (2620 views)
Tasted by tdelorme on 3/16/2017: Incredible bottle of muscadet - showing very well. Amazing QPR -- hard to find anything better under $24. I think this will continue to show very well over the next 6-8 years, but should revisit in 1-2. (2597 views)
Tasted by jlm on 2/13/2017: This bottle is starting to show some mature aromas of waxy fruits and nuts, and the fruit expression on the palate has opened up with time as well, adding some aged complexity to its expression, especially on the finish. The snappy acidity is largely integrated into the fruit at this point, with everything working harmoniously together. Don't know how much more positive development can be expected here, but it's quite nice right now. (2363 views)
Tasted by sawira on 2/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Bottle #7 of 13. Brilliant. Light yellow color still, this has years to go. Bright lemon drop nose and palate, blazing cut and acidity, great detail and definition, sea breeze and smoke, and this hasn't budged in a couple years. I agree with bags - the best deal in white wine these days.... I could drink this all night. Fantastic. (2427 views)
Tasted by bags on 1/30/2017: developing beautifully. very much alive, but a bit fuller and "wider"; balanced. drinking terrifically now and certainly for the next 10yrs plus. this is actually fabulous right now....okay, well, 2nd day, that was transformed from a fabulous muscadet into a very serious chablis. less angular and energetic and deeper and layered. Buy the Clisson and put it away for 10 years: the best deal in white wine.... (1670 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 1/25/2017: Too old for my taste (1534 views)
Tasted by Ben H. on 6/14/2016: This bottle tasted older than expected when I first opened it but with time and air it became increasingly fresh. So mouthwatering and textural. Sea breeze and lemon smells, vividly stony-tasting. (2465 views)
Tasted by fitzi on 4/22/2016: Excellent. Mature. From 750. (2407 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 4/11/2016: Magnum. Light yellow. Bracing saline aromas. Medium weight, tart lemony fruit, incredible acidity. If anything, this was too young out of this format, but I'm not complaining. Compelling wine. (2683 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 2/6/2016: From magnum.

Yellow-gold in the glass; wow, what a nose! Saline, seashore, minerality - it's all there.

Lithe & focused on the palate, with decent acidity. Nice persistence - has that tart "Granny Smith apple" edge to it.

I have no idea how long something like this might last - it almost strikes me as ageless in the glass today. Very good showing here. (2536 views)
Tasted by ghood on 1/18/2016 & rated 95 points: This is rocking! Richness, minereality, perfectly put together. Great bottle. This would put many Grand Cru Chablis to shame. (2845 views)
Tasted by fitzi on 12/6/2015: I find this wine to be drinking very nicely now. The fascinating oily, slithery quality of its younger years is gone, but its components are beautifully integrated, conveying a sense of seamless finesse with some depth. I don't see this wine giving up much more than it is now in the future, but I imagine it will continue to be this good for a while - no signs of decline in this bottle. (2042 views)
Tasted by jlm on 12/5/2015: Light aromas of lemon zest and minerals. Denser fruit on the regular bottlings, but without the firm minerality framing the texture. This has never been as expressive, to me, as the '07 Briords. It's a fine wine, I just haven't gotten excited about it for some reason. (1714 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/16/2015: Medium yellow. Classic saline tones. Biting, quinine underpinning with great acidity and more flesh than a run of the mill Muscadet. Terrific. (1956 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 7/16/2015 & rated 92 points: Golden yellow. 5th time from my cellar. Still a beautiful sipper. Sea, shells, peaches and crisp apple on the nose and palate. Refined with balance and length. Delicious on a summer night on the deck. (2132 views)
Tasted by sawira on 7/15/2015 & rated 93 points: Significantly better as it warms - this allows the quality fruit to show itself. The mineral, seashore and acidity is there, no problem - plenty of cut and bite - but the fruit needs a little help. Lemon curd, chalk, iodine, and an oregano or herbal spiciness that I enjoy, and is only noticeable with some air and warming. I still think this is young, but not sure - it's an interesting wine. A bit of a bruiser for a Muscadet, but I have to say, I like it. Very much like a dialed down, razor edged Barraud Pouilly Fuisse. No heat at all, and no degradation (though maybe some long term fade?) over three nights.

Three days later: After nursing this over three nights - a glass a night, letting it warm in glass - the very last sip was by far the best. Not a hint of oxidation, cracking up, heat or other indications of over-the-hillness. I've reached my verdict - this is very, very young, and a very very special white wine in that I've never had one improve so much on warming. Best at 65-70 degrees F, unbelievably, and behaves like a high quality red, yet with all the classic Muscadet notes. Beautiful complexity and very long finish. Wonderful wine, and glad I have lots more. I'd take this over an Aubert Chard (except maybe the Lauren) anyday, and this has TONS of upside. Upgraded to 93pts pure quality, 95pts personal preference (2079 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 5/28/2015 flawed bottle: Just a bit corked, which is sad because the underlying goodness was also plainly visible. (3446 views)
Tasted by fitzi on 5/25/2015: Much more interesting than the last bottle, so perhaps coming through the other side of an awkward or shut-down period. Different from its youthful self, the wine now shows more depth, complexity, and saline pungency, which I'm beginning to read as a sigunature of well-made, well-aged Muscadet. (2143 views)
Tasted by Arinbraghe on 1/3/2015 & rated 93 points: It's funny, not to mention maddening that the word "terroir" persistently defies quantifiable definition, yet the phenomenon clearly exists. In yet another example of the fact, this tastes way more like another wine from white-mineral-laden soils -- namely Chablis -- than it does like most Muscadet. Granted this similarity owes something to the fact that while most Muscadet, even most good Muscadet, is built like a 1970's tennis pro, this is built like a 21st century decathlete. But I don't think that tells the full story, because this doesn't merely seem like Melon de Bourgogne that does barbell lifts at the gym; it really does share more in common with, say, unwooded Premier Cru Chablis than it does with 95% of its appellation cohort. It's as though varietal character for both categories is subsumed by the lemony-stony essence of the growth medium, with grapes being merely the palatable vehicle of that substrate. That's even more true of the wine now than several years ago, as the brawny fruit has taken on a burnished quality and the structure come to the fore. One more thing's certain: if I'd bought this for the same intended purpose as most Muscadets, I'd feel as though I'd brought a Howitzer to a squirrel hunt. It's certainly no seaside quaffer, or to toss back like Fresca at an oyster roast. (2593 views)
Tasted by fitzi on 12/22/2014: This was a perfectly nice bottle, but less impressive than my last, a couple of years ago, having lost the slippery-soapy saline quality that made it so exciting then. Will try another soon to get a better take on where it's at. There's something to be said for drinking a wine when it's very good, instead of waiting for more. Anyway, solid high-quality Muscadet, but not special. (2441 views)
Tasted by ghood on 11/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Not the best bottle, but still rich if not a bit unresolved (2355 views)
Tasted by sawira on 11/15/2014 & rated 92 points: No formal notes. Wonderfully spicy smoky lemon, with sea shore characteristics underpinning the strong fruit. Great stuff. (2419 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 10/19/2014: Tried this with some delicious fresh raw Maine oysters on the half shell. Good acidity, very direct and a little spritz. Overall what I'd expect from a good muscadet, but not great. Maybe I was just expecting more/better from the paring; the oysters were better than the wine. The bottle did seem a little tired and lacking the energy I'd expected, so possibly a little past peak at this point. (2926 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 9/27/2014: Similar tasting notes to before
Wine has aged well although fruit probably a bit more faded
Paired well with shellfish (2670 views)
Tasted by JJKinch on 8/9/2014 & rated 91 points: Nice citrus fruit, bright acidity, great salinity. Strong fruit and
acidity. Really enjoyable. Lingering finish. (2611 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 8/2/2014 & rated 89 points: 4th time from my cellar and least favorite to date. From magnum. First 3 from 750 ml, but I doubt this means anything. First 3 bottles were special while this was very good. Similar nose of sea and chalk, but this bottle had much more lemon on the palate with some minerality. Probably just me, but I like less lemon and more limestone and salinity. Still, a very nice wine. (2693 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 7/13/2014: Drunk over two days. Lovely, lovely wine - a core that feels as much floral as it does briny Muscadet-y. Balanced, intense, and cleany and clearly expresses itself. Delicious wine, and feels like drinking white Burgundy more than drinking Muscadet, and I do not mean that as a compliment, but as an observation. I really like this wine and feel that Clisson is something to enjoy for sure, but if it is Muscadet I want, this isn't the thing I will reach for. (4205 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 7/10/2014: Brilliant. This was outstanding when young and now it's adding new elements of depth and richness without sacrificing a bit of its Muscadetness. Greenblanket didn't get much of a chance to geek out with this wine as four of it sloshed the whole bottle down in minutes. (2009 views)
Tasted by sawira on 5/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Very lively, and best on the second day. Consistent with previous note, except no hint of toffee/butterscotch. Instead, there's a slight whiff of marzipan/crème brulee/powdered sugar on the nose towards the end of the bottle. And it's becoming even more expressive and expansive. Yum. A delicious and decadent Muscadet. (1886 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 5/26/2014: Brought a mag of this to a party, so no formal notes, but I can say that this is the kind of Muscadet I like. It is richer than normal, and has more breadth to the aromas and flavors. It's still quite linear and precise compared to other wines, but it is in no way severe. Great with the grilled shrimp kabobs. (2296 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 5/25/2014: Light yeastiness, lots of (lemon and lime) citrus; awesome acidity and minerality; great complexity. This is fantastic muscadet!

Follow up: even after a week of cold storage, this is still a uniquely rich and shows a variety of floral and citrus notes. Very nice. (1748 views)
Tasted by Chris Newport on 3/3/2014: Age has been kind to this wine. Starting to take on some darker light golden hues in the glass, with bright acidic fruit aromas on the nose. The wonderful acidity is still here, and this is still dominated by a sensation of rocks and citrus, but fruit is also starting to take on some darker tones, which really add to the appeal of this. What really makes this special though is the intensity of the finish - intense and mouthcoating, lingering on after the last sip. A really fantastic bottle of wine. I remember this as being special when young... if anything, this is even better now. (2035 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 2/17/2014: Another great "this Muscadet goes to eleven" showing for this wine. While it has the weight and feel and some of the oceanic presence of a good Chablis it still presents as all Muscadet. It was awesome with a goat cheese appetizer and a Nicoise-ish salad. (2109 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 1/30/2014: Atypically, I will not provide a score for this wine because I do not feel that I have a good enough understanding of this wine to do so. A first, I almost thought it oxidized, but this type of taste is the style of this wine. I drank it a while ago (this note is from memory, but it is a memorable wine). As others have noted, mineral flavors. Well balanced. I can see why some say a few more years. I have a bunch more, and I will revisit the wine later. (1704 views)
Tasted by sawira on 12/9/2013 & rated 91 points: Coming out of its clumsy phase. Easily identifiable as Muscadet, and even Clisson, on the nose alone, this is nicely layered, detailed, ripe for a Muscadet (but not overly so), and delicious. Hints of subtle and tasteful butterscotch to add to the ripe tropical oriented fruit profile (for a Muscadet). Great acidty, blazing Meyer lemon, nice chalk, minimal seashore, very good length. Starting its run, this will be delicious for a decade plus, easily. 91pts pure qulity, 92 pts personal preference, this might even gain more over time. (1832 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 9/5/2013 & rated 91 points: A beautiful Muscadet. All sea air, minerals and peaches on nose and perfectly balanced palate. (2197 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 5/12/2013 & rated 92 points: 3rd time from my cellar, and I love this wine. Straw yellow. Smells of the sea and crushed chalk. Beautiful food wine that went great with smoked salmon brunch. Perfectly balanced with nice acidity tasting of crushed stones, steel and a hint of lemon. As good a Muscadet that you could wish for. (2631 views)
Tasted by sawira on 4/24/2013: Starts out a bit muted, both nose and palate. Eventually shows some chalky lemon. Body thinner than I remember. Muted. The next evening opens to show more varietal typicity, but still a bit held back. The length is the biggest clue, and it's quite long, while the details of my previous Day Two note only show up on the end of the 2nd evening, at the end of the last glass. I'd sit on these for another two or three years (maybe more?), or slow ox for 10 hours, as I think they're in a dumb phase. Not close to showing its potential of 93-94pts. (2223 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 2/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Nose was really nice wth flowers, citrus, minerals.
Palate of lemon, salt, sea salt.
My favorite of the lineup. (2541 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 2/24/2013 & rated 91 points: MuscaDay 2013 (Tom's House - Washington, DC): I like each vintage we tasted, but something about 2007 speaks to me. Aromas of peach blossom, guava, perfume, orange peel, honeyed tea. The palate is rich, deep and full of creamy peach, guava and orange fruit, but of course the zesty acid is there for balance. Bracing minerals provide backbone. The depth of this makes me think it could age for a decade. (2992 views)
Tasted by tdelorme on 12/20/2012: This has been impressive from the first bottle I had a couple of years back, but it is just starting to really sing -- can't wait to try this again in another year or two. (2704 views)
Tasted by bags on 10/22/2012: ditto with everyone. not completely sure what I'm drinking but it's pretty wonderful. glad I have a bunch more. (2636 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 9/18/2012: Developing beautifully. It wasn't until day 2 that I found Muscadet here, but that;s not a knock at all. I loved day 1 - the wine is delicious! So well balanced, such clean and pure aromas, so expansive and detailed, and such a great mingling of mineral and fruit and lees inflected richness. Just lovely wine, very compelling. (3957 views)
Tasted by sawira on 6/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Day 1 - P&P. Brilliant, deep, green-hued yellow gold. Saline, chamomille, but mostly an explosive lemon flavored Starburst (or Sour Patch Kids - which ever you prefer) candy nose. Great complexity on the palate, especially for a wine this young. Tart citrus/quince entry, smooth oily mid-palate, the barest hint of butterscotch, and then again that Lemon Starburst candy explosion and blazing acidity on the mouthwatering and long finish. All this enlivening detail atop a foundation of chalky, mineral-laden, basic Muscadet structure, so this is no poofy wine. Superb!
Day 2 - Muted nose, same on the palate, this is going into a bit of a shell it seems. More kumquat and carambola (starfruit), without the candied note, and the same strong mineral acid structure. More 'tropical fruited' in its orientation than most Muscadets I try, and while that sounds weird to a traditionalist like me, it really works. This is beautiful, and my guess is this will last at this level, and improve, for another 10-12 years. Glad I have lots more! (2453 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/13/2012 & rated 92 points: Dinner with Vincent (Giant Garoupa Restaurant): This really was quite lovely. The last of three bottles, and I really wish I had more. It had a very inviting nose, gentle, yet complex with its notes of sweet green pear and ripe lemons, a bit of cream from the lees, and then a nice undercurrant of earthy, chalky minerality with a saline edge to it. Nothing really in your face, but it was a very gently pleasing bouquet. The same thing could be said of the palate. It had a soft, creamy attack opening up in juicy flavours of pears and lemons, a touch of flowers - rather fruit forward, but all underlined by bright acidity and a steely, tensile mineral streak so that the backbone of the wine though the attack and the midpalate seemed almost stern until it that melted into a long, friendly finish where white fruit and wet stones melded together into a delicious package. Really yummy and lovely with our seafood. So much so that the wine was almost deceptively simple in its easy elegance. Yet if one really paid attention, there was quite a bit going on in there. A real treat. (2864 views)
Tasted by fitzi on 2/14/2012: Partly open, drinking nicely, the tense, lemony acidity set off against a slight plumpness of texture. In all a comforting and appealing wine at this stage. Will it continue to develop? You'd think so, considering its source and soil. Drink or hold. (2799 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 2/7/2012: Rather open and softer than I would have expected given Jon R's description...dry relative to prior Jasnieres and Al ban viognier,, but not as crisp and sharp as I might have expected.. hard for me to really evaluate given prior wines and late in dinner (2580 views)
Tasted by JerM on 1/7/2012 & rated 94 points: (Old-world vino intro night, thanks to Paul S, et al) Crisp, cut-grass, with floral notes and stone fruit on the nose. Oily and yet savory, and also a pleasant lemony citrusy acid with dank hay and white fruit. Flinty minerality with oyster shells and a fair metallic edge, giving an impression of salinity and seafood characters. When paired with actual superfresh sashimi slices, it is creamy! An agreable grapefruit/yuzu skin (white pulp) becomes prominent on the finish. Lovely stuff! (3974 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 1/7/2012 & rated 92 points: Jerming's Intro to Mature Old World Wines (Kingyo, Marina Square / Pine Close): A really soild Muscadet. I learnt my lesson from the last bottle, which only showed well towards the last few glasses, and popped this a good half-hour before serving this time. It seemed to do the wine a lot of good. While still clearly young, it drank very nicely from the first pour, showing a very maritime influenced nose - with seaspray, seashells, oyster shards and flint aromas twirling around with a little hint of straw and some neutral white fruited notes. A bit tight, so as with the previous time, it was the palate that really impressed with its rich depth of white fruit couched in an almost oily textured package. There was ripeness and power here beyond what you would normally expect from a Muscadet, but this was matched stride for stride by a very bright lemony, limey crispness. The wine was then lined with an edge of metallic minerality towards the long finish, where some pink grapefruit and subtle hay notes peeked out from amidst the riper fruit. I liked this very much. It had lots of character, yet it somehow still retained a neutral core that made it so lovely to drink and ever so versatile, with the flavours shifting subtly in sympathy to each piece of sashimi we had. Lovely stuff, which should get even better over the next couple of years. (3832 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 1/7/2012 & rated 83 points: V neutral wine. Does feel a bit like a Bourgogne blanc. Lots of stone and

Tasted by Paul S on 12/8/2011 & rated 92 points: Lunch at Kingyo (Kingyo, Marina Square): Very young, but this very nice - just about a perfect pairing with Sashimi. It had an attractive nose of ripe lemons and limes, a touch of fresh gooseberry and then plenty of oyster shells and chalky minerality, all very seaside-ish aromas. Very nice. The palate was about as good as one can imagine a young sur-lie Muscadet being. Opening with tons of minerality, the wine showed deep layers of chalk and flint undergirding a fleshy mouthful of ripe lemons and green apples on the midpalate. It was super fresh, very vibrant and really grippy on the back-end too, so much so that you could almost imagine tannins on this as it exited in a lovely, tingly show of livewire acidity zipping through more seashelly mineral and juicy lemon flavours. There was a really nice je ne sais quoi with this wine. Still very young and a bit tight though, this should be beautiful in time. I am so glad I have two more in the cellar. (3566 views)

Tasted by salil on 11/22/2011 & rated 91 points: Fresh lime and lemon fruit over a base of stone and mineral salts with more and more complexity unfolding with air, great balance, precision and persistence - just fantastic wine that makes me wonder why I don't own more Muscadet. (3160 views)
Tasted by jlm on 9/20/2011: This has definitely become a bit less angular over the last six months, but it's still quite tight. Fantastic energy on the palate though, this should be lovely with a bit of time. (3055 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 8/26/2011: Very closed, unfortunately this bottle never really seemed to open up. (3143 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 8/6/2011 & rated 91 points: Same as prior bottle notes on 6/19. As good as it gets for Muscadet. Crushed stones and ocean on the nose. Crushed stones and sour apple on the palate with a hint of lemon zest. Complex and delicious. (3123 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 7/6/2011 & rated 92 points: A coiled tour de force of minerals and intense, concentrated citrus fruit. It's common these days to tout Muscadet as a White Burg substitute, and this is one of the few that really fits the bill. A champion of the Appellation. Better on day 2; this has a long, beautiful life ahead. (3402 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 6/19/2011 & rated 92 points: I don't think Muscadet can get any better than this. Nice light golden color. Peaches, granite and the ocean on the nose. Beautiful perfecty balanced palate of crushed stones, chalk, apple and a hint of citrus. Perfect acidity. My mouth waters just to think of it and glad that I have several more in my cellar. (3481 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 6/6/2011: This bottle took some time to open up, best on the second day when it expressed a wide array of citrus and anise aromas and flavors, something like white grapes, and a lot of salty rock. Delicious, well balanced, approachable and still very complex, just a great wine. (3780 views)
Tasted by rhit on 5/25/2011: It's pretty amazing to have this kind of texture and body weight in a totally dry wine. The interplay of cut and richness here is striking. And none of its nuance gets obscured. It's salty sea and shell in a luxurious, delicious package. (3490 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 4/26/2011 & rated 93 points: STG Loire (My house): This was unquestionably my WOTN. And at $22, I clearly need to track down a case.

nose: really beautiful, piercing, and defined by slate, rock salt, and brick dust
palate: granite, definitely granite. Other rocks, other minerals... this was ALL THAT and more....just a perfect wine with a supple, velvet mouthfeel even as it delivered a teeth-breaking rock-crunching experience. Dynamite. (4452 views)
Tasted by LSussman on 4/25/2011 & rated 91 points: With scents of lemon, pear , green apple this minerally, acidic somewhat dry wine is wonderful and refreshing. Had with a shrimp dish and was deightful. The final quarter of the bottle was consumed 2 days later and was still terrific. Highly recommended. (3492 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 1/29/2011 & rated 93 points: Perhaps the best Muscadet I've ever had--Muscadet dialed to 11. This is slightly thicker and richer than most Muscadet, but it doesn't come from the fruit. Rather, it's as if granite has been liquefied and then mixed with lemons and a dash of cream. Special stuff here. (4138 views)
Tasted by TimOn12 on 1/5/2011: Probably my favorite white wine I drank in '10. lovely minerality and acidity as one would expect, but also lush citrus and even honey aromas. just a pleasure to drink and better on the second night. will save my other bottle for a while. (4058 views)
Tasted by W.Simons on 12/20/2010: Very impressive. Extraordinarily concentrated, generous and full with a buoyant streak of acidity which keeps the whole light and exciting. Lime and apple. A strong undercurrent of tension and depth -- seems almost alternately opaque and dense, then on the next taste, all minerals and lightness. Very, very good. (3940 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 12/19/2010: Greenblanket gave us a bottle of this a few months ago. I pulled the cork tonight to go with some Asian-style halibut we prepared at home. We were very impressed with this wine It had the crisp acidity and minerality that we enjoy in wines from Loire. It is making me a believer in Muscadet. (3698 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 11/25/2010: Brought out to go with an array of Thanksgiving seafood appetizers and it was tremendous. This wine delivered richness balanced with laser bright acidity and a subtle complexity of citrus and white fruit, minerals, and a host of tautly wound herbal flavors. (3737 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 11/25/2010: Brilliant wine. Love the tightrope here between bright acidity and gentle leesy richness. (3665 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/10/2010: I was surprised by how open and giving this was, right after uncorking. Citrus, crystalized pineapple, and complicated notes of wintergreen and white pepper; minerals and piercing acidity. Terrific richness and a very bright and nuanced palate. Not as closed and as linear as expected, but rather, open, giving . . . and great. (3508 views)
Tasted by Gargantua on 10/26/2010 & rated 92 points: (This tasting note is from memory, as I've hearkened back upon this wine many times since and will never forget it). Here is the wine that proved to me that yes, I could indeed love Muscadet, and that it could be minerally and relevant--a far cry from the strange yeasty notes that Muscadet gives up in lesser parcels. This was hands down the greatest Muscadet I've ever had, and even if I bought quite a few bottles, I was a fool not to have filled my fridge with cases from Astor when it was selling for a piddily $24. You're getting so much wine for your buck. I salute you, mighty Santa Claus Ollivier, our Muscadet Overlord! (1735 views)
Tasted by marc d on 8/29/2010: Just a lovely drop tonight. Leesy and mineral nose, lemon zest, and beautiful near perfect acidity.
Yowser. (3817 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 8/26/2010 & rated 91 points: Shy nose of herbs, grape and fennel. There is plenty of acidity here, which is balanced by a lovely minerality on the back end. Full-bodied, with a long length. This is not unlike a still version of an excellent Champagne. (3221 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 8/13/2010: Wonderful and well enjoyed with our fresh Wellfleet oysters. Bright, clear acid. Yum. (3608 views)
Tasted by LSussman on 7/4/2010 & rated 90 points: perfect on hot summer day with lobster. Has the right amount of acidity to cut through drawn butter. (3724 views)
Tasted by marc d on 6/23/2010: This got tighter on the 2nd day open, go figure.
Enjoyed it more when we first opened it. (3851 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 6/22/2010: Very tight on day one, all about searing acidity and mineral, but opened up beautifully over the next couple of days to reveal rich lemon, floral and almost tropical fruit notes to complement the rocky minerality. Love the bit of residual sugar, only a bit more austere than good sec Vouvary (think Huet). This seems certain to get more interesting with age. Give it a couple of days to unwind if drinking now. Perfect with grilled seafood and an unbelieveable value. (3733 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 6/22/2010: shows a richness next to Briords and other 07 muscadets, but not necessarily better - Briords was better when they were first opened. On days two and three this wine came together beautifully, with creamy lemon and stone. but it is interesting that with both bottles open over several days, Briords seemed to me to be the more complete wine in 07. based on those two bottles anyway. (3797 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/8/2010: Magnum. A bit of citrus upfront. Starts relatively rich for Muscadet but rapidly contracts down to a light, stony, mineral, quinine essence with terrific acidity. The more it warms up, the more an enticing orange rind quality becomes more prominent. Great example that will last for years. (3755 views)
Tasted by marc d on 5/30/2010: Best bottle of this I've tried so far. Familiar mineral Pepiere nose. Starts out a little broad in the mouth, I guess the extra lees contact makes this seem fairly rich at first. With just a little air the acid structure shows up and adds life and zip to the noted richness (for Muscadet, anyway).
Lingers for a while. Very interesting wine, maybe not the preferred style for the typical Melon de Bourgogne acid heads, but I liked it. (3722 views)
Tasted by Chris Newport on 3/22/2010: Very nice wine, sort of like a muscadet on steroids. Subdued, but pretty nose, piercing Briords like acidity on the palate with a hugely long and mouthcoating finish. Seems to be a bit more substance all around than the '07 Briords, a great candidate for the cellar. I'll be holding my remaining bottles. Between these wines and the Huet Secs you find some of the greatest white wine and the best white wine value in the world. Buy it if you can find it. (3910 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 1/27/2010: great wine, really fantastic, and perhaps the best value in white wine that i know of. piercing nose of citrus with a focused floral undertone, and leesy richness. balanced and delicious, this drinks well now with some air time, but will surely be great down the road too. load up. (4089 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 1/24/2010: This is an amazing wine in so many ways - depth, clarity, density, lift, balance – obviously very young but delicious with everything from cheeses to cured fish. It seemed to open all night most notably showing a vivid bouquet after an hour of air. Wonderful. (3788 views)
Tasted by hutch on 10/28/2009 & rated 93 points: Dressner Day 1 (NYC): Huge, massive white wine with super bright acidity. Laser like precision. Gorgeous, amazing stuff. The elements that this wine contains within itself while remaining so pure and focused are remarkable. Thrilling wine. 92-94 (5279 views)

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.

In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.

Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

Muscadet (mus-ka-DAY) is a region in the western part of the Loire valley, near the city of Nantes. White wines from Muscadet are made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. They tend to be light in color and body, and are intensely mineral driven. They are thought to be a perfect complement to raw oysters from the nearby coast. Muscadets are gleefully paired, though, with any fresh shellfish or other seafood.

There are a couple of appellations in Muscadet, the best of which is considered to be Muscadet de Sevre et Maine. And the best bottles from that appellation are aged sur-lie, or on the lees, the musty mix of yeasts and other post-fermentation solids. This aging provides flavor complexity that can be missing in other bottles.
