Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by McMalbec on 6/7/2020: May have waited too long to try this wine. Nevertheless, enjoyed with Sunday afternoon pesto pasta and chicken enchiladas. Blackberries on the nose; decanted and strained to remove the sediment; nice spice and pepper on the palate with ample acidity. (445 views)
Tasted by kenthargis on 5/31/2015 & rated 88 points: This was nice and the fruit was relatively good, but not nearly as good as the 2010 bedrock syrah we had a few days before. Just didn't have the same level of richness. Could be the vines just weren't as old with the GF. (1554 views)
Tasted by junglejuice on 4/22/2015 & rated 88 points: Pop/Pour. Solid dark leaning red fruit, which are especially bright and tasty on the mid palate which falls off a bit on the medium/short finish. The attack was odd as it initially felt a bit tired but the mid palate was full of fresh fruit. Very good, but not sure I would seek out again as one could do MUCH better for the price ($25-$45) (1930 views)
Tasted by Weston3220 on 2/23/2014 & rated 91 points: Beautiful nose right apon opening pure raspberry goodness, on the palate alive and balanced so sexy, this is one of those wines that we needed a magnum for the 4 of us, we wish we had another bottle to drink, (2515 views)
Tasted by midtownmac on 9/9/2013: See previous note. This is in a really good place right now. (2720 views)
Tasted by blakel on 9/2/2013 & rated 91 points: This has improved since the last visit. Now with some interesting floral notes on the palate. Violets? Delicious. (2263 views)
Tasted by blakel on 5/21/2013 & rated 90 points: Subdued nose... a little alcohol and traces of fruit and minerals. Bracing but delicious and balanced acids, some dark fruit and a mineral edge on the palate. Nicely balanced, smooth texture and mouth-filling. Medium, warm finish. Good stuff. (1592 views)
Tasted by Neumannl on 5/4/2013 & rated 92 points: Deep dark purple in color, very full on the pallet - decanted and it was open and great. Have not been disappointed by this vineyard. (1695 views)
Tasted by midtownmac on 4/13/2013: Drank this along side a really nice Cotes du Rhone and the nose on both wines were strikingly similiar. This was right there with the CdR in nose and acidity. This was no fruit bomb. It was a little fuller and riper than the CdR but this was very well balanced and a nice example of what Syrah can be in California. (1086 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 4/7/2013 & rated 88 points: Seemed very one dimensional today. great deep fruit, but less overall than in previous bottles.. (927 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 3/3/2013 & rated 92 points: Drank very well over three days. personally, I liked day three the best. (1043 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 2/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Incredible and much better on day 3 or 4... (940 views)
Tasted by jhkey on 2/22/2013: Delicious. I didn't take formal notes, but this is a wonderful cool climate syrah. Very reserved, absolutely my style of syrah. I think it will only improve with a few more years in the bottle. (1145 views)
Tasted by blakel on 2/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Deep opaque violet. PnP. Austere dark fruit with a subtle top note of cherry cola and minerals on the nose. Rich dark fruits and pronounced cherry cola on the palate. Nicely acidic, well balanced. I might have guessed this was a Pinot Noir if tasted blind. Definitely old-world in style. Very nice. 1st glass had a shocking teaspoon of black chunky sediment in the bottom of the glass! (6 months later... I wonder if in fact this WAS a pinot noir? I had both the syrah and the pinot in the cellar, and right now I have one extra syrah and I'm short one pinot. And these descriptors don't fit the other bottles of the syrah). (1013 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 2/7/2013 & rated 93 points: Best after open one day. Jammy and delish! (1069 views)
Tasted by tzarf on 2/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Good on day 1, Great on day 2! (1008 views)
Tasted by jim dixon on 1/28/2013 & rated 91 points: Wife thought this was French (N. Rhone) and I can see why -- surprising acidity for a Cali Syrah. Really lovely if you like that style. (1082 views)
Tasted by bmaxwell82 on 1/26/2013 & rated 90 points: White pepper and play-doh on the nose. Very well balanced, was expecting typical over fruit Cali Syrah. Medium finish. (1033 views)
Tasted by ecola on 12/8/2012 & rated 90 points: Red berries, vanilla cream, and well balanced acidity on the medium to full body. Smooth mouthfeel and very easy to drink. (1360 views)
Tasted by Meano on 1/4/2012 & rated 89 points: Really enjoyed this wine. Flavors are subtle for a California Syrah. Nice balance of fruit and earthiness. (1573 views)
Tasted by LeMarinaro on 11/24/2011 & rated 91 points: Very drinkable without food, fruity, smooth, no aftertaste. Light for a red. (1561 views)
Tasted by flying_wineau on 4/17/2011 & rated 89 points: Right nice blueberry, raspberry, plum, and vanilla, with subtle saddle and clove. (1508 views)
Tasted by blindfold7 on 2/3/2011 & rated 91 points: Great color, blackberry flavor with a hint of pepper. Earthy layers of leather and mushroom with a slight tannic grip. Great bottle of wine! (1651 views)

Gary Farrell

Producer website
Beginning in the late 1970s, Gary Farrell was working with seminal Russian River Valley vintners such as Davis Bynum, Joe Rochioli, Tom Dehlinger and Robert Stemmler – a group that was instrumental in showcasing
the world-class Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of the nascent Russian River Valley AVA, a breathtaking, redwood-studded wine region 55 miles north of San Francisco whose mighty river cuts a scenic swath through the
heart of Sonoma County. He made his first wine under the Gary Farrell label in 1982 and built the winery into one of the most acclaimed producers of small-lot Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the Russian River Valley.

Gary built a state-of-the-art winery in 2000 on a ridge overlooking the Russian River Valley. The barrel room and cellar reflect his legendary obsession with cleanliness, natural process flow, small-tank fermentations,
top-flight French oak cooperage and meticulous attention to detail. With its northeastern orientation, the "crush pad" houses custom belt systems for gently moving and hand-sorting grapes, European presses and
varying sizes of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The fermentation room is a winemaker’s dream with ample room between the rows of small custom-designed, open-top stainless steel tanks, raised tank pads
and pneumatic punch-down devices. The barrel rooms allow for precise temperature and humidity control to provide a perfect environment for fermentations and barrel aging.

Although he sold the winery in 2004, the Winery continues its collaborative partnerships with many of the same growers we’ve worked with for 30 years as well as Gary’s legacy of crafting wines that capture the unique
character of the vineyard.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros

Straddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties.
