Tasted by cweiss on 2/11/2024: Tet. Lovely nose, and a treat but still a little young. (901 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 2/4/2024: Oh, my, this is drinking great tonight. I wouldn’t necessarily call this mature, but it is certainly showing well. Expansive on the palate, good acidity and just plain delicious. Glad to have more 🍷👍 (1018 views)
Tasted by rlove on 12/25/2023 & rated 92 points: The cork crumbled and I had low expectations but this shower well, similar to a bottle a few months back, with bright red cherry backed by some rose and medicinal notes. Lightweight with fine acidity that brings balance. Very good. (1012 views)
Tasted by dream on 12/9/2023 & rated 93 points: I agree the bottle variation on this wine is simply insane but this magnum was solid. A touch of brett on the nose but the palate is clean and the wine definitely shows maturity especially in the texture which is silty and layered. The fruit is in the red spectrum and there is a strong dose of crunchy minerals along with hints of licorice and rose petals. Finishes quite complex with dry tannins. Really very good but somewhat surprisingly, the ‘08 Cappellano and ‘06 Mascarello Monprivato were easily better. (1079 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 11/18/2023 flawed bottle: I've had this wine many times from multiple sources, and unfortunately 80% of the time it's a hot mess of sharpie marker and this might have been the worst example of it. (1344 views)
Tasted by acyso on 11/18/2023 flawed bottle: Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): Opened at 9:30am, and left in a decanter starting at 11am. Undrinkably volatile. This has been a pretty inconsistent wine in (not just) my experience, but the volatility tonight was egregious. (1582 views)
Tasted by rlove on 8/19/2023: Subtle but pretty notes of cherry and Nebbiolo spice. Silky, elegant, effortless. A lovely Conterno. (1385 views)
Tasted by Beachfan on 12/11/2022 & rated 93 points: Lovely showing, still youthful (1933 views)
Tasted by acyso on 10/19/2022 & rated 90 points: WineBerserkers dinner (Chicago, IL): This wine has been all over the place for me. Tonight's bottle was quite good -- slow oxed at noon and double decanted an hour or two before service. Certainly a hair volatile on the nose, but with good red fruit notes here. Not as dried out as some of the wines of this era can be. The palate still feels young, and there's a juiciness on the midpalate before you get to the tannins. (2925 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 5/21/2022 & rated 93 points: il gran finale del Barolo di compleanno (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): This is a much more powerful bottle than I've previously had. There is a bit of VA going that is just distracting enough. Even with that, there is excellent depth and expressive tones of sour red cherries, strawberries, roses, sour red fruits, vanilla beans, morning dew, truffles, earth, and leather notes. The Full bodied feel carries through the power the nose shows along with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The VA on the nose and a bit on the palate takes this down a slight bit compared to the bottle I had in 19. Still, it's a wonderful wine even when it's not fully up to its normal level. (2704 views)
Tasted by Michael T. Zoppo on 4/11/2022: This showed really well, and much more red-fruited than I expected it to. Laser-focused acidity, elegant red fruit, and a complex finish. I'm usually the odd duck that finds himself unenthusiastic about G. Conterno's Barolos (go ahead, flame me), but not this time. (2662 views)
Tasted by kenv on 4/7/2022 & rated 97 points: NV 2001 Barbaresco and Barolo (Marta, NYC): [Double-decanted for 1 hour at 8am.] Nose of spice and black fruit. Silky and rich in the mouth. Huge red and black fruits. Classic G. Conterno. (2555 views)
Tasted by ash_then_chase on 2/26/2022 & rated 93 points: Tastes much, much younger than a 2001. Still feels like it could use 5+ years. Nose of mint… and melon (jfc!?). Yeah, melon through and through (thanks BQ for the hint). Fresh scooped, meaty cantaloupe at a backyard grill sesh. What a unique note (from a red!) (1967 views)
Tasted by Arsene on 1/29/2022 flawed bottle: Korket (1964 views)
Tasted by cct on 10/15/2021 & rated 97 points: 2001 Barolo and Barbaresco Retrospective (La Cuchara, Baltimore): 2001 Barolo-Barbaresco Horizontal .
La Cuchara, Baltimore
Opened at 8AM, decanted form noon to 5pm, then drunk over several hours at dinner

A deep brooding nose, with dark nebbiolo fruit, nettles, tar, iron, and roses. This has an intoxicating, extroverted nose that continues onto the palate intensity, depth and scale. This comes directly at you announcing itself rather than drawing you in like the Monprivato. Sappy and dense, nearly bottomless, monumental in scale, yet incredibly poised with terrific inner mouth perfume and depth. More dark fruit, balsam, savory notes, and some porcini along with the nettles and ferrous notes. This is one of the wines that had an extra gear this night, but this one was more in volumetric sense rather than a sense of nuance. I do not mean that volume as criticism, as it is nearly impossibly well balanced. A wonder that grabs your attention. Terrific and showing very well in a youthful mode. (2619 views)
Tasted by BLam on 8/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Eric brought this 01' vintage paired with Jim's 82' vintage. Eric opened 5 hours in bottle prior serving this beautiful young smoking lady with perfume. In comparison, this 01' vintage had a shining nose. (965 views)
Tasted by Beachfan on 7/28/2021 & rated 94 points: At a very good place, no rush for the rest but can start them now. (2447 views)
Tasted by Robmcl920 on 5/5/2021 & rated 94 points: The '01 Francia showed very well and was much more expressive on this occasion than the times I've tasted it in the past - last in 2018. It remains a young Nebbiolo that will benefit from more time in the cellar, but this tasting gave some hope that this wine, which seemed stubborn in the past, is going to come around.

On the nose, I found red plum fruit, licorice, black tea, dark red roses, and tar, in a very expressive showing of classic Serralunga Barolo aromatics. On the palate, the wine was richly textured with dark plum fruit, dark red to violet floral tones, earth, and fresh herbs, with brilliant acidity. It showed a compelling combination of rich, sweet red fruit and savory elements, with a sense of energy and freshness from the acidity. The tannins were finely textured and well integrated at this stage. (2997 views)
Tasted by Arsene on 3/28/2021 & rated 89 points: Mursteinrød mot orange rand.
Smakt over 26 timer.
(2531 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 2/23/2021 & rated 95 points: Youthful, fresh and pretty. Drinking very well, pedigree comes through for sure. (3025 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/8/2020: Decanted in the morning and brought to Gary and Tito's for lunch with home made pizza, outdoors on a beautiful autumn day. While the sides here have softened, this still has plenty of concentration and inner fortitude that require some additional cellar time. Really good palate grip, nicely structured but not unduly so, really nice purity, long finish. Offering plenty of pleasure now, but this is still young and will be better in years to come. My other offering, the '07 Dauvissat 1er La Forest was oxidized, sadly. (3064 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 9/26/2020 flawed bottle: Decanted ~4 hours. This had a high toned, volatile, canned fruit aroma from pop n pour that decanting never cleaned up. Really hard to get past. The palate was more pure and clean with good richness and a structure that is coming together -- but just not providing much pleasure given the volatility on the nose. (2981 views)
Tasted by burgburgburg on 9/9/2020 & rated 91 points: Allowed 8 hours of slow-ox. The cork looks like a recent released wine instead a bottle I kept for 10 years. Herbal and black fruits aroma. Fruits, dried leaves, herbs, and fine acidity. What's lacking is a good structure. Need decades if have good provenance. (2663 views)
Tasted by Siegelaa on 8/10/2020 & rated 94 points: Really surprised to read reviews below.
This is an elegant and understated rendition of Barolo, with complexity, lots of class and great length. This is not a screamer but a very pretty medium body wine that doesnt need extra attention. Class & finesse in spades! Top juice! Ready to drink (2493 views)
Tasted by Rich.Herbs on 5/13/2020: A sharp green edge dominated the mid palate and finish and obscured the finer components. I'm not sure where this wine is going, but I'll wait a few years before trying another bottle. (2711 views)

(Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia) Just amazing how accesible this wine is. Nose of exotic spice, cinnamon, roses, old wood, cocoa. Nose is like a kalaediscope. Palate has such beautiful balance and purity. Wonderful earthy sweetness and concentration. Every time I have this wine I love it more.

Ken Vastola's fabulous guide to G. Conterno labels

Praelum: “Arguably the King of Barolo. No wine journey is complete without the tasting of one of the great Conternos. ‘Only premium quality can bring prestige to the Langhe.’ Giovanni Conterno taught his two sons Giacomo and Roberto after World War I to ferment and age wines in Bottis with prolonged maceration and ageing. The brothers split in 1969 and Giacomo started investing in his own vineyards since 1974. The wines of Cascina Francia, Monfortino and recently, Ceretta from Serralunga d’Alba are amongst the finest expressions of Nebbiolo that the wine world has ever seen. 4-6 years ageing usually.”

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
