| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by TK Mastres on 3/12/2017 & rated 92 points: Wonderful notes of cedar, smoked meat and a bit of spice. On the palate the the flavors change a bit and you get mid ripe raspberry with still a splash of acidity. There's a fullness though that doesn't let you down. A clean red fruit takes you though the finish and to truly happy ending (905 views) | | Tasted by texaswinelover on 12/19/2016: Very nice tonight. Red fruited, medium body and ripeness. Syrah character but not too stinky, gamy or bloody. Right down the middle.
Glad to have another. No rush to drink either. (930 views) | | Tasted by TK Mastres on 7/11/2015 & rated 91 points: One of the most restrained Jaffurs wines yet still full of flavor. Definitely benefits from decanting or aeration. (1135 views) | | Tasted by ctjared on 6/21/2015: super juicy (1122 views) | | Tasted by Mootsie on 2/7/2015 & rated 92 points: Needs air for full flavor. Decant for several hours. Day 2 is a treat. Plus 1 point. (1262 views) | | Tasted by BBencz on 7/17/2014 & rated 92 points: Dense garnet color. Cocoa and herby nose, with dark black fruit, pepper and chocolate notes. Tannins still thick, but still nicely balanced. Another 5 years to go, but drinking well now. (816 views) | | Tasted by pilot360 on 7/8/2012 & rated 93 points: This bottle os wine is great. Needed a few hours to open up, but is is so fresh and bright. Youthful but excellent for drinking now with air.Predominatly pepper, cassias, and dark fruits. Has a cool smokiness to it. Outstanding effort. (1708 views) | | Tasted by Mootsie on 7/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Advancing in flavor since our last bottle 6 months ago. The heat is not as apparent. Smoother with still bright acidity. Not as deep or smoky as the Verna's single vineyard, as spicy as Larner nor as complex as the Bien Nacido; Thompson stands out though as a more elegant offering and expressing its own terrior. Candied fruits emerge after a couple hours. 91+ (1240 views) | | Tasted by HOS on 7/2/2012 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured as second bottle of the night. Black cherry, pepper, roasted herbs. Smooth tannins form a good backbone with a good finish. Years of life still to go. (1468 views) | | Tasted by OCWino on 2/26/2012 & rated 87 points: Lovely nose of violets and berry pie. Rich with an earthy base and blackberry jam with stewed fruit; slight notes of pencil lead. Lingering finish. Very hot from the high alcohol; could not take this wine to a restaurant and finish it with my wife for fear of not being able to drive. The jammy fruit and hot alcohol spoils what might have been a good single-vineyard effort. (1442 views) | | Tasted by Mootsie on 1/12/2012 & rated 91 points: Translucent black/red color. Earth, pencil lead, stems, anise nose. Blueberry pie, anise, pepper, tannic, a little hot, slightly sweet. Not bad, will benefit from a litttle more time. (1123 views) | | Tasted by STM82 on 11/13/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark purple with a nose of violets, crushed rocks, and asphalt after rain. On the palate it was hot with alcohol even after decanting for 4+ hours. I think it's hard to hide 15.8% alcohol. Beyond the alcohol, there were stems, black pepper, brine, and a bit of soy sauce. It was bitter after an hour and a half with tart fruit and soy sauce. It shed some of those qualities and was thin-medium . Wanted more complexity and less acidity. Somewhat disappointing... (1114 views) | | Tasted by Gestalted on 10/15/2011 & rated 90 points: Nose really reminds me of the 07 Thompson, however there's a blackberry tartness that's a little hard to love. Still another great single vineyard Syrah from Jaffurs.
-- Consumed at at cellar temp: 60°-65° F. Friends don't let friends drink red wine at room temp! (1171 views) | | Tasted by pcarpe41 on 7/29/2011: Solid purple. Brambly, pencil lead, ripe red and blue fruit. Total consistent palate with a little bit of herb and earth. Nice structure and finish. Love Jaffurs syrah!! (1123 views) |

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY | BALLARD CANYON AVA
Our Larner Vineyard Syrah is planted in deep, sandy soils over a layer of chalk. Co-fermented with a touch of Viognier and 70% whole-clusters, this wine effortlessly balances elegance and power. Blue and black fruits jump of the glass, and are supported by tar, pepper and graphite. The palate shows more blackberry, green olive and baking spice. Finishes with a long mineral-laden complexity. Expect this wine to develop and gain complexity over the coming decade, and age well into the next.
Syrah Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)
Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
