Tasted by gew71walsh on 2/4/2024 & rated 95 points: Agree with my earlier and others comments. Best I can say is this is what a bottle of Cabernet should be!!! (734 views)
Tasted by capacious on 11/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Very nice example of Les Pavots. Am I always swayed a bit by the multiple and memorable visits to the vineyard? If so so what. Always a dependably excellent wine, given the time. This is ready but I think has 10 plus years to change and show multiple different ways to be excellent (894 views)
Tasted by phandley66 on 5/20/2023 & rated 94 points: Beautiful nose with deep, dark fruit and tobacco. On palette, very well balanced. Velvety texture. Dark cherry, black currant, tobacco. Good finish. Would drink over next couple years. Wonderful wine. (1455 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 7/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Terrific smooth mature cab. Drinking beautifully. Very rich with a great mouth feel. (2576 views)
Tasted by jcampano on 6/23/2022 & rated 96 points: Bold floral aromas with black fruit and chocolate. Flavors of blackberry and black cherry with some licorice, spice and coffee. Firm tannins and a 30-second finish. (2518 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 2/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Rich and lush
Savoury cherry and currant flavors
Really quite good, just missing that little oomph to make it really special.
Probably peaking now. (2774 views)
Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 12/1/2021 & rated 96 points: Dark purple color turning violet at the rim with a reflective edge. Practically a teenager, this wine exhibits a youthful character expressing high octane fumes of blue and black fruits layered with rose petals, tea leaves and cinnamon. The palate is full-bodied, well-structured, round and velvety with youthful blueberry compote, dark red cherry, raspberry licorice that’s aptly balanced by medium acidity. There’s a massive mid palate that holds everything together through the long, persistent finish with secondary notes of vanilla, espresso, cinnamon and clove on the toasted oak. This will rival the 2007 and only time will tell which of the two are better. Drink now until 2038. 96+ (2805 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 11/14/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 45 minutes. Black currant, black cherry, mocha, licorice, tobacco and oak come through. This is full bodied, decadent and quite dense still with noticeable oak. This needs more time to unfurl or maybe needed a longer decant. (2326 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 9/15/2021 & rated 92 points: Slow ox for one hour. Baked plum, black currant, cigar box, and lead pencil come through. The wine is full bodied, opulent, and layered but comes through a little hot on the nose and back palate. It will be interesting to see how this evolves but right now it’s not fully realising it’s potential (1874 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 8/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Slow ox for two hours. Very nice nose of black cherry, violets and a little lead pencil. The wine is full bodied, still youthful, oozing with flavor, tending toward dark fruit, mocha type flavors and finishing long. This a tad overdone for me and there is noticeable oak but overall it’s still a pretty successful effort. (1751 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 4/3/2021 & rated 94 points: Slow ox for two hours. Lovely nose of violets, blackberries, lead pencil and tobacco. The wine is rich, medium to full bodied, shows very good balance and sports finely integrated tannins. Overall this is in a very good spot today and although it can clearly continue to age and evolve you shouldn’t be shy on popping the cork now. (2147 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 3/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. This is a solid red wine with mouth-staining concentration. There was some significant sediment toward the end, enough to be unpleasant (and despite my having stood this bottle up for several weeks before opening), so I would definitely recommend decanting or screening. On the nose, I get plums, mint, and espresso. In the mouth, the wine is rich, smooth, and nicely layered, leaving a remarkably long finish on which red fruits and herbal nuances linger. The tannins are sweet, soft, and fully integrated. Overall, this is a nice, elegant red blend. With the exception of the sediment, I much enjoyed it. 93 points. (2086 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 1/17/2021 & rated 95 points: Huge dark fruit, incredibly smooth, tannins completely resolved. Decanted for about an hour, but it was fantastic out of the bottle. This should coast along in its prime drinking window for a few more years, but based on this bottle, I would not anticipate further improvement with continued cellaring. (2207 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 12/25/2020 & rated 95 points: I let it breathe for 1.5 hours. Drank over 3.5 Consistent with my June 2019 notes. (1856 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 12/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Better with age ..smooth as glass after long decant..most excellent (1873 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 7/2/2020 & rated 97 points: It's been 2+ years since I drank this wonderful wine. Dense dark fruit, cedar, beautifully balanced with long satisfying finish. Paired with grilled veal chops with port wine reduction sauce - heavenly! (2265 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 6/21/2020: Served blind
Deep dense purple with just a hint of lightening at the edge.
Pure dark fruit, but with such an incredible balanced lightness throughout.
Really quite remarkable stuff.
Clearly cali cab and consistent with sweet 2008 vintage.
Lovely now (1951 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 5/27/2020 & rated 95 points: Very silky, fruit is ripe but restrained -- this definitely drinking in its prime right now but surely has a few good years left. Not a massive cali cab, this is bit lighter and more elegant. (2073 views)
Tasted by Handy1 on 4/25/2020 & rated 94 points: Definitely cherry and bay leaf on the nose. Smooth red berry on tasting mild spice excellent and ready to go. Will last for several more years (1879 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 1/24/2020 & rated 94 points: excellent. good core of cherry/brighter red fruit with some bay leaf/tobacco hints. Medium+ body, but def not a monstrous CA beast like some CA cabs i've had. a terrific pairing with a rib eye. decanted for one hour +. (2359 views)
Tasted by gew71walsh on 9/3/2019 & rated 95 points: Drank for hurricane Dorian evening. Decanted for two hours (suggest decant since substantial sediment). This is beautifully integrated now and should last for a number of years. Berries and currants, with a touch of spice. Tannins are subdued. Medium finish. (2505 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 7/9/2019 & rated 95 points: 1 hour decant. Ruby red, full bodied, chocolate cocoa, coffee, subtle tannins, and drinking beautifully. 95-96 (2595 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 6/18/2019 & rated 95 points: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot & 3% Petit Verdot. 14.5% ABV. I let it breathe for 45 minutes then drank over 2 hours. Really needed a full 2 hours out of the bottle. Drinking beautifully. Sweet, perfumed nose. Lots of pure, ripe fruit, with a long, juicy finish. Perfect acidity level. I suppose you can wait but not really necessary. As good on day 2. (2567 views)
Tasted by Asmiller on 5/25/2019 & rated 94 points: Drinking MUCH better than last time we tried it (3 yrs ago). Could absolutely age longer but drinking beautifully now. (2484 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 12/31/2018 & rated 94 points: See last note in April..age has helped along with a 2 hour decant; excellent right outta the gate (2782 views)

Peter Michael

Producer website

The Peter Michael Winery is the California outpost of British-born Sir Peter Michael who has shown a Midas touch for selecting brilliant winemakers, including Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, Luc Morlet and more recently Luc’s brother, Nicolas. The consistency of these offerings from the cool climate hillside vineyards in Knight’s Valley and the Sonoma Coast has been respected and cherished by each of these winemakers... All things considered, Peter Michael is one of the reference point wineries in California.

2008 Peter Michael Les Pavots

Winemaker's Notes: The 2008 Les Pavots reveals a deep, layered bouquet of black cherry, licorice, black currant, blueberry pie, and blackberry combined with chocolate, vanilla, coffee, black tea, subtle spicy notes of cloves and cinnamon and its distinctive ‘garrigue’ touch. The complexity and intense character continue into the finish with a massive mouthfeel, lasting impressions on the palate and round, silky tannins. 2008 Les Pavots will benefit from three years of cellaring for near term enjoyment and will age gracefully for two decades or more. Wine Information: Harvested: September 17, 2008 to October 21, 2008. Blend: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot & 3% Petit Verdot. Aged 16 months in 100% French oak barrels from artisan coopers. Alcohol: 14.5%. Bottled unfined and unfiltered May 18, 2009. Release: April 1, 2011. Winegrowing Notes: Grown on the slopes of Mt. St. Helena in Knights Valley, the distinctive aromas and flavors of our proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot clearly display their hillside origins. Rocky, rhyolitic soils created through volcanic activity millennia ago, contribute a mineral richness and add to the wine’s complexity. Spanning 49 acres, Les Pavots ascends to an elevation of nearly 1,400 feet. Merlot and Cabernet Franc grow on the cool upper slopes and Cabernet Sauvignon grows just below.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
