Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 49 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by markcic on 10/16/2023 & rated 90 points: Better than the bottle I had a few months back. My wife still did not like it. We had different dinners which might be the reason. She had grilled steak and sausage. I had chicken cutlets in a chimichurri sauce. The wine held up to the sauce. Blackberries, Currents, tobacco and hints of spice. If definitely tasted better with food. (529 views)
Tasted by markcic on 6/29/2023 & rated 87 points: Drank over two nights. The first night it opened to dark floral notes leading to a pallet of blackberries, blueberry, pepper and some baking spice. The finish was moderate in length. The second night the flavors were muted and flat and totally uninspiring. So 90 for the first night and 84 for the second night. I have a few bottles left which I will open when friends are around for a one night consumption (525 views)
Tasted by chatters on 6/10/2023: It's gamey steak night...time for some slightly peppery syrah...Savoury but with pretty black fruits with a little peppery note, earthy, leather, touch of almost bonfire on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, blackberry fruit, slightly coarse tannins but this is really charming on the palate & superb with the steak. Lovely. With time the tannins soften and that little Bretty note from my last tasting starts to show. Yum. (759 views)
Tasted by chatters on 3/10/2023: Coravin fun - Northern(ish) Rhone (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Savoury, meaty notes initially, black hued fruits, a little sweet spice, earthy underpin, smidge of upper. Juicy with quite a surprisingly Bretty note after the nose, muted black fruits, a peppery prickle is a little intrusive, chalky drying tannins. It's a bit out of whack. Hmm. (734 views)
Tasted by chialuvwines on 11/13/2022 & rated 90 points: Medium ruby. Still lightly tannic and acidic. Decent nose with berries. Medium finish. (828 views)
Tasted by chatters on 2/6/2022: Birthday Sunday lunch (McLeay Street Bistro, Potts Point): From Coravin. And this one shows more obvious peppery spice as well as some green peppercorn joining the, in this case, slightly jubey blackberry and slight red toned fruit in support. Tannins are a little chalky and there is some rocky minerality. Of the three this one is the one that shows the least balance and togetherness at this juncture. (1463 views)
Tasted by mat600 on 8/10/2021 & rated 92 points: érieur au précédent. Le fruit et l'équilibre en font un mini hermitage. A point. 92 sur 100. (1488 views)
Tasted by Jozefs on 12/12/2020 & rated 93 points: Drinking well, but still not a peak I think. In any case no need to hurry. (1686 views)
Tasted by anonymoose12345 on 12/10/2020 & rated 93 points: PnP. Dark red in the glass with dark red rim. Nose of dark red sweet fruit, crushed herbs, soy sauce (?).

On the palate, similar to nose with sweet dark red fruit, savory herbs, silky mouth feel. Long finish of tart fruit, bit of acidity and soft tannins.

After 30 min, nose showed hints of BBQ sauce, palate showed something like peppercorn steak, more prominent tannins.

Over more time became more brooding, hint of barnyard, forest floor, funk.

Overall an elegant, luxurious, and plain wonderful wine. (1511 views)
Tasted by Macsim on 11/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Bel équilibre, un peu tannique. Au nez fruits confis, cerises, mûres. En bouche prunes, poivres. Longueur moyenne. C’est très bon. À boire maintenant (1390 views)
Tasted by DRK III on 5/13/2020: Very nice wine. Classic Syrah character. Smelled and tasted cooler climate. Not very powerful, but elegant. Not very long, but refreshing. (1477 views)
Tasted by br_winelover on 5/9/2020 & rated 92 points: 92pts. Full notes on Instagram at br_winelover. (1284 views)
Tasted by chatters on 4/4/2020: From Coravin. Blackberry, sweet spice, black pepper, gamey, a little plum, a tiny smoked bacon, a little chalky minerality and vanilla. Juicy, tight, slightly floury tannins go hand in hand with fresh black fruits, a little pepper. A tiny jubey note on the finish. Nice. (1256 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 3/2/2020 & rated 92 points: Displaying dark fruit, garrigue, crushed rock and iron ore. Good depth and texture. The wine started out very acidic, but that subsided after I decanted the bottle after the first glass. It seemed to be in a dumb phase. All in all, good juice. (1141 views)
Tasted by Empirate on 4/20/2019 & rated 91 points: There’s a bit of old socks funk on opening but the fruit is still present, tho mature, and layered with dried flowers.

For mine, will try to finish up over the next 3-5 years.

Quite nice. 90-92. (1609 views)
Tasted by chatters on 1/31/2019: Annual Coravin blitz - day one (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. ripe wild blackberry, earth, black pepper, muted cream. Juicy blackberry, tight chalky textured tannins, a little peppery warmth on the finish. Nice if not a little simple (1774 views)

Tasted by EhrlichDY on 1/14/2017: Popped and poured and enjoyed with dinner and a glass afterward. The wine leans modern with notes of glycerine and jammy dark fruit. I had also mentioned coffee in a note taken previously and I get that too. This wine strikes me as one that may continue to age but I'm not sure it will necessarily develop. (3047 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 12/12/2016 & rated 92 points: I've been following this wine for awhile now - its now entering the drinking window. Sweet oak. A band of focused minerality start to finish. Bright black and red fruit. Soft mouth feel. On the finish, the acidity and residual flavors just explode, and the finish lingers a good 45 seconds. Pretty impressive, all told. (2931 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 8/15/2016 & rated 94 points: Beef blood, granite and iron note cover the palate in a distinct fashion. Black and blue fruits sneak in on the finish in the third glass. Decanted for an hour. This wine was opened a little early. Give this wine another 3-4 years in the bottle and you will be rewarded. (2796 views)
Tasted by Kurtjo on 8/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Ungdommelig, med kaftig blanding av rød og mørk frukt. Touch av brent kaffe. (2626 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
