Tasted by Zweder on 4/24/2024 & rated 93 points: HWS Bordeaux 2009 vs 2010 (By me): Beautiful and elegant oak, tobacco and chocolate in the bouquet. Same on the palate, elegant juice with dark berries, graphite and beautifully fresh acidity and round tannin. Good length with a pleasant touch of sweetness. Young maturity stage now and delicious. 92 – 93 (549 views)
Tasted by terrapins on 4/4/2024 & rated 90 points: Visually dark garnet colored in the bowl with bricking at the rim. The legs are slow and and long with medium to heavy sedimentation in the bottle (had to use a coffee filter after standing for 48hrs). After an hour of breathing, the nose is a cedary and dusty bark with dark red cherry notes. The body is full with medium acidity. The wine has a somewhat still tannic texture, concentrated ending in a medium to long finish. All in all definitely a nice wine but requiring a few more years of cellaring. Paired with angelhair pasta with white truffled meat sauce. (386 views)
Tasted by henryfriendly on 2/29/2024: In kind of an awkward teenage phase right now. Extremely dark color, but the nose is developing, with some primary dark fruit notes but also tobacco, beef jerky, and leafy tobacco. The palate tastes more youthful with plums, blackberries, some cassis, and spicy potpourri. Tannins are still quite aggressive, and there’s a bit of alcoholic heat here, but I think this has the fruit to make it over the longer haul. I’ll put my other bottle away for at least 5 years and see what happens. (539 views)
Tasted by hebill on 12/27/2023: No rating. Very disappointing. Will open another soon to see if it was unique to this bottle. (853 views)
Tasted by jdlee1232 on 10/29/2023 & rated 82 points: Disappointing. Out of balance. Bitter. Bad (1113 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/28/2023 & rated 93 points: An easy afternoon with close friends (@ My place): In the bouquet dark berries and herbs, also some graphite. On the palate ripe and juicy dark berries, some sweetness, beautiful acidity, good length, full bodied and some caramel in the finish. (1429 views)
Tasted by arthurogus on 9/3/2023 & rated 90 points: We thought this was pretty deep and mature tasting. Not that much fruit left, but good tannins and finish. (1219 views)
Tasted by Fatty Cat on 5/20/2023 & rated 91 points: 0.375 L bottle late May 2023: not decanted; deep dark crimson color; intense bouquet of dark berries, toast, cedar, espresso and mint; polished texture; medium acidity; tannic in the cheeks; medium/full body.

14.5% vol. alcohol. (1609 views)
Tasted by The Wine Monkeys on 5/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Seems to be in a nice spot. Balanced fruit, tannin, some acidity, earthy, leathery notes and a medium finish. The fruit mellowed as the wine opened in the glass over about 30 mins. We prefer the 15’ to this one but that’s not a knock, just for comparison sake. This is good to go with life left if you prefer more evolution. (1453 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 2/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine. Medium finish. Delicious (1691 views)
Tasted by jdlee1232 on 12/24/2022 & rated 91 points: 98. Clerc Milon was pretty tough competition but it’s still held up. (1981 views)
Tasted by Doc Blinet on 12/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Tastes of sweet raisins after 90 minutes of decanting. Then it came alive with smells of mint and spices. Medium finish. It paired well with a grilled medium rare porterhouse. (1854 views)
(1860 views)
Tasted by johnnylaw1222 on 10/23/2022 & rated 89 points: Coravin restaurant pour. Ripe blue and red fruits on the nose. Non descript red fruited palate. Relatively high acid. Somewhat short finish. (2151 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 10/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Impressive and surprisingly ready to drink with some hours of decanting time in a large flask, especially considering this is a 2010!

Plums and blackberry on the nose and palate, this is a medium body Pessac-Leognan Wine with a good balance and nicely aged. Medium-long finish with mushroom hints.

In 1874, it called itself Chateau Haut Brion Larrivet, much to its illustrious neighbours anger! Lawsuit after lawsuit entailed and eventually in 1949, it was allowed to have "Haut Brion" at the end of its title!

Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion is owned by the Gervoson family as of 1987, whose fortune is derived from sales Bonne Maman jams (red and white checked jar lids!).

One of 3 favourite bottles in the 7 we enjoyed at @Hann Sze's home.

Thanks @Mika Tyson Teau for so deftly preparing this wine, how long was the decant? Not often are we able to enjoy 2010 vintage bottles

Thanks M for sharing this... I think he only paid like USD 50-60 some years ago before the wine inflationary period.. well priced and good quality mid tier Bordeaux left bank!

Tasted by brennan18 on 9/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Terrific mid-level Bordeaux that's not showing any age and drinking just perfect after an hour or so in the decanter. I got this at specs for around $75 and that's very good price for a wine at this vintage and quality. I'm going to go back and see if they have more. Traditional Bordeaux profile: medium body, with some decent legs, herbs red fruit and a nice mushroom/forest floor flavor profile that lingers on the pallet for about a minute. I really liked it. Served it at dinner with some friends everybody enjoyed the wine. (1801 views)
Tasted by Renevin on 9/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Nez minéral. En bouche, c est puissant. Les tanins très présents. Belle longueur. À attendre (1825 views)
 Tasted by pren on 6/18/2022 & rated 89 points: 前两次。刚开瓶的时候,就有点气味了。口中是微红糖/巧克力的味道。三小时后,没好到哪里去。只是这个微甜的味道明显了一点。显然不到时候。 (2554 views)
Tasted by ElJefeTX on 2/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Revisited 1 year after my first tasting and every bit as good as I remembered. Delicate aromas of tobacco pipe and black fruit followed by earthy, dusty notes of black cherry, fleshy plum and cocoa powder. Tannins are seamlessly integrated with pleasant acidity delivering a refined finish. (2816 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Gang of 4 in Covid19 times; Bordeaux, Pessac (@ RW): Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, sweet spices and a firm dose of oak and vanilla. On the palate oak and dark berries, sweet spices, licorice, chocolate, beautiful acidity and tannin with still a good bite. Develops in the glass. The alcohol shows a bit, but certainly a beautiful wine in its young maturity stage. 92+ (2980 views)
Tasted by timothynbond on 9/29/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted two hours before serving. Deep purple color. Hint of barnyard on the nose along with some dark cherry. Medium-body with medium acid and medium-to-medium-plus grainy tannins. Rustic palate with dark fruit interspersed with meaty flavors. No hints of over ripeness -- great classic Bordeaux for the price (I bought this for $40 a couple years ago). (3251 views)
Tasted by aerosol on 8/13/2021 & rated 94 points: Wow is how I am going to start my notes. The nose is definitely oak, plummy cassis and minor green notes. On the palate, the wine is totally youthful with plum, blackberry, black cherry, cassis, and some tight astringency. The wine has a nice long finish like chocolate pudding. It’s one of the better wines I have had in quite a while (3424 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 6/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby, with marked viscosity and high extraction. Starts off with greenish minty aromas and tight tannins, but quickly mellows to ripe cassis and black plums, but still with cool mint, cloves and cinnamon. Fairly long finish, and moderate complexity (3023 views)
Tasted by catowne1 on 5/16/2021 & rated 91 points: Good wine. Decanted 3 hours. I would imagine that this wine would have show better if it were grouped in a different line up. Was the first in a line up with ‘03, ‘05, ‘12 Chateau Pavie. (2708 views)
Tasted by VoVo on 4/28/2021 & rated 92 points: We decanted this two hours before dinner. This has a very bright, fruity wine that definitely shows the Merlot and Cab Sauvignon characteristics. This will continue to mature and come into its own, but we definitely enjoyed it tonight with our New York strip with favs beans sautéed in garlic. (2732 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
