Tasted by Burgnick on 10/11/2019 & rated 88 points: From my OWC. The 92 Valbuena indeed has noticable bottle variation. Among the 3 bottles I tried (2 from owc and 1 from loose), they all showed differently. The bottle today was muted unfortunately. Should have decanted it. (1962 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/2/2019: A loose bottle not from my owc. Slightly oxidized showing more tea and tart fruit. (1823 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/30/2019 & rated 92 points: First bottle from an owc. Dark fruit, ink, mineral, tar and smoke. Unlike a bottle I drank few years ago which displayed a very floral character, this bottle was more Vega in style with concentration and power. It paired very well with Yakiniku. 92+ (1884 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 4/14/2018 & rated 94 points: Second and last bottle. Top shoulder fill. Cork 3/4 soaked but too dry and clean. Pnp. Stunning aromatics right out of the gates. Red fruit, floral aromas and spices, elevated acidity. A touch of brett too. Fine tannins almost entirely gone. Long finish. Better than 2 years ago. 94-95.
Very impressive, few wines are aromatically as expressive as this. A fair bit of fine sediment too so better to keep upright for a couple days before opening. Drink now. (2744 views)
Tasted by Cpo on 3/4/2016 & rated 94 points: drinks good now, lots of years in it left (3445 views)
 Tasted by In2wines on 12/18/2015 & rated 93 points: December 2015
Second bottle, still stunning - love this, but this really need 2-3 hours of decanting !! (2531 views)
 Tasted by In2wines on 7/17/2015 & rated 93 points: Bordeaux July 2015
First bottle of this none Vega Sicilia vintage, it did need 1,5 hours to come around, quite closed in the beginning and quite light in colour.
The taste did not come light, this is mature, but has a hiden power of elegance, asian spices, cinnamon, brillaint integrated oak and a lovely balance, like this one better than the 98.

Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Dinner with Gavin at Bistrode: Truffle, cherry, some Brett influence for sure here but in the meaty spectrum rather than metal. Classic Sweet and sour fruit profile with excellent texture and length. Feels like drinking now is the perfect time. (3055 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 1/26/2015 & rated 93 points: What a lovely wine. The nose was very floral like a burgundy, with hint of Domaine Leroy! The wine was very transparent with mature red berries, tobacco and smoky bacon. This is at its peak now but it will have no problem holding up for another 3-5 years. The style is a little rustic..the masculinity has tamed down due to age. The tannics were still noticeable but pleasant. (2796 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 1/10/2014 & rated 92 points: PnP - bottom neck fill, cork almost entirely soaked. Wonderful from the very beginning: Earth, leather, potato chips, herbs, on the palate very smooth and clean dried fruit, tobacco, after about 30 min some fine tannins, medium plus finish.

Only my second vintage of Valbuena but very impressed by the consistent quality. Look forward to trying Vega Sicilia's first wine some day... (2898 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 2/28/2012 & rated 95 points: A spectacular wine full of coffee, dark chocolate and dried fruits. (3168 views)
Tasted by Valder on 9/28/2011 & rated 91 points: Still in good shape with ripe fruit, razor sharp acidity and mature tannins. Nice nose with clear indication of age and lots of ceder and vanilla. Impressive Wine. (3341 views)
Tasted by Anders C J on 1/26/2010 & rated 89 points: Peaking - time to drink asap. Good nose, palate very promsing but died very quickly. (3511 views)
Tasted by Casta on 7/23/2009 & rated 93 points: barbaro! bien guardado y con excelente maduracion en botella - que bien (3139 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 10/4/2006 & rated 92 points: We had this wine at Jorge Cano’s Spanish wine tasting. It was the favorite wine from the Ribera Del Duero. The color was a deep garnet with some brick. The nose was filled with plum and black cherry. The taste was balanced with very complex fruit with flavors of black cherry and plum with a hint of anise and wild mushroom. This wine just continues to get better but it will not improve much longer. (1655 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 8/1/2006 flawed bottle: Sadly, it was swampy, vegetative and heading into oxidised territory. Palate had fairly harsh acid and was stripped of fruit. From the same batch as a bottle the owner had a few months ago that was excellent. This cork was soaked through. Damned cork variation. (2595 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 12/1/2005 & rated 90 points: I agree with Parker’s description of this wine. The nose to me was also smoky. The wine is at or nearing its peak and will probably improve very little. Drink-up over the next year or two (1675 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 12/30/2000 & rated 95 points: An even, fairly bright mid ruby showing some signs of maturity. Fast, thin legs. Heavily smoky leather and hedgerow fruit on the nose - very serious stuff, with great depth. Great attack - very fresh and really quite light and fruity with good acidity. Fills well, but not enormously. There's a real tobacco astringency (in a pleasant way) on the palate with some distinct seville orange notes. This is lighter than I had expected it to be. Great length and very fine and simply beautiful after.
(30/12/00)
The next day: an attractive bright ruby, fairly mature. Fabulous nose with lots of smoky leather and grassy, hedgerow fruit scents. Beautiful, light attack. Then you get a sudden blast of tannin as it fills out enormously, but precisely and with great attraction. Lots of tannins on the finish, but also very clean. Very well balanced. Extremely classy, well-made stuff. Very Good Indeed/Excellent.

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
