Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 9/21/2021: Still tight, but with nice fruit and richness. Very good for $13. (511 views)
Tasted by nicefish on 9/6/2020 & rated 87 points: Still drinking alright, but past it's prime. (631 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 3/5/2019 & rated 90 points: All previous accolades apply. This just gets better at 9 years old. In perfect drinking window now. Generous, complete, satisfying. What more can you possibly ask for at $13?? Hats off to Jon (810 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 8/26/2018 & rated 88 points: This a marvel for 13 bucks. I think it still needs time to soften its tannins and release some of its pent up matter. Closed nose but a ton of material on bouche with good weight and fine drink ability. A jr winner of a find (824 views)
Tasted by petermpls on 8/21/2016: I could see this going well with pizza. (1863 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 6/22/2016 & rated 86 points: Nothing special but not bad. What do you expect for the price? (1533 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 9/4/2015 & rated 87 points: Very nice drinker. As you would expect for $13. Nice with cheeses. (1742 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 7/3/2015 & rated 87 points: Nice simple Bordeaux. Good QPR for a family cookout. (1582 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 12/3/2014 & rated 88 points: Nice QPR with good balance of fruit and tannins (1941 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 6/28/2014 & rated 89 points: agreed with others and previous notes (1760 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 4/12/2014 & rated 89 points: I was surprised how much I liked this. My wife and I drank this with a pesto minestrone soup and polished the bottle which is not our usual way of drinking a bottle. The color was very deep purple fading slightly to crimson at the edges. The purple was completely impenetrable. On the nose there were some nice hints of dried cherry, wet granite, soft pleasant leather and loamy soil. The nose was very gentle. The initial taste on the tongue was exceedingly pleasant though the follow through was not up to the level as the initial taste. If it the length was as powerful as the initial taste this would be a truly extraordinary QPR Bordeaux.

It was like meeting a girl for the first time (or a guy depending on who you are) and finding her initially very attractive, then realizing her flaws (as she is no doubt realizing yours) and then after a while seeing her attractive again. 88 - 89. (1715 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 11/19/2013 & rated 88 points: Good value, still young , tannic, leather, tobacco, sour cherries, crisp. Agree with others needs to placed with food. Somewhat astringent from the tannins . Softened after two hours decant. try again in two to three years. (1849 views)
Tasted by tward on 11/3/2013 & rated 87 points: This was enjoyable Bordeaux for the price point. The tannins are a bit drying and the astringency tightens the finish and makes it more of a food wine. However the nose was very nice showing cedar and spice and berries. It is mid-weight to lean, but had plenty of offer, allspice, juniper berry, and dark fruits against granite / wet stone as it opened up.

[Had this over a couple of nights with no notes.] (1707 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 3/31/2013 & rated 87 points: Brought to a Seder. I thought the tannins had settled down, but one of our dining companions immediately noted the strong tannins. I think the fruit has come up a bit, but it's covered by a kind of wooly texture and an austere dryness. We drink dry dry reds, but my wife commented on the dryness here, so I'm saying it's a bit astringent. Not bad, and a pretty versatile quaffer at $9, but not super-light on its feet, either--not a ton of body, but there's not a ton of freshness or acidity for an unoaked wine. Not sure I would buy again--but that's also because there are so many daily drinkers to experiment with out there. (1923 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 12/20/2012 & rated 88 points: I liked this better than the last time because I lucked into a nice pairing, but I must have overrated it before because it's not more than 88. For an unoaked wine, this is pretty tannic and might do with a little aging. Had some green notes, but some tasty fruit and savory notes, too. The crisp acidity made it work well with a tuna and sun dried tomato topping to our pasta--who would think Bordeaux and Italian? (1709 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 10/16/2012 & rated 87 points: Definitely doesn't see oak, not new anyhow. Light for Bordeaux, definitely not a special wine at $9. Cherries, and more cherries, maybe a little bay leaf. Nice versatile food wine for the money. (1630 views)
Tasted by Ron Felthoven on 9/4/2012 & rated 88 points: Turns out this wine is pretty darn good. This is all about savory earth and minerality -- very little fruit in this wine. The tannins are certainly present and this wine is not really ready to go without a long decant. I liked this better on the second day. A really nice wine for the money. (1681 views)
Tasted by luchavino on 7/5/2012 & rated 80 points: On first opening the nose is earthy sour pie cherries. The palate is showing tart cherries and a weird chemical tart chlorine finish.

One hour later the nose has bulked up with notes of dark fruit and smoky roasted meats. The palate is darker, but still tight and tart with pie cherries and a dry cherry bark finish.

One day later the nose has some character of juicy cherries and earth. The palate is tart cedar and cherries with a very dry finish. (1246 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 6/23/2012 & rated 89 points: Barnyard and cherry on the nose, with some spice and leather in the background. Smooth on the palate, with lots of barnyard and leather upfront, cherry on the mid-palate, and a good spice finish. (1968 views)
Tasted by Patches on 2/22/2012 & rated 88 points: This seems like a more complete and fully realized wine than the 2009 vintage. Upon opening there are strong notes of olive and vegetation but the fruit comes out after about thirty minutes. The wine also continued to evolve over the course of three days. There is some room for this wine to improve I think. (2147 views)
Tasted by rjm_va on 1/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Shows some of that silkiness of a Bordeaux but yet it's not obviously a Bordeaux. There's wood and terrior happening but in a good way and not overpowering. Good food wine and a great deal for the price. (2065 views)
Tasted by Jorgy on 12/2/2011: Tasty drink this vintage, same as the last. Will probably make this an annual daily drinker purchase. Love the great values you can get in bordeaux. (2340 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 11/2/2011: This was fantastic. Wish I bought this by the case. Everything I look for and so rarely find at an everyday price. A little rustic, sure, especially the tannins, but it has great intensity without much weight, authentic Bordeaux graphite, leather, tobacco, and earth. (2311 views)
Tasted by Chomsky on 11/2/2011: I also loved this. Just as good or better than the 2009.

I recorked half a bottle's worth in a split and got to it two days later: just as good, bit more open, Cab Franc leafiness coming through. Just a swell drink. (2609 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Entre-Deux-Mers

"Part of the problem with the terroir of the Entre Deux Mers appellation is the lack of mineral elements in the soil and the massive amount of forest land." - The Wine Cellar Insider
