Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/19/2024: Oregon Trip-Day 1 (Here and there, Willamette Valley): Lighter yellow than the Dauvissat. Richer, rounder, and deeper with more forceful orange peel and acidity but still showing a lot of waxy young Raveneau hazelnut. Much less farther along than the Dauvissat Vaillons. (976 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 11/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Shiny Medium yellow-gold with green tint. Lemon oil, butter, hazelnut, oyster shell, honeycomb and incredible length. Did not taste anything like a Chablis but more like a Criots-Batard Montrachet. Complex and subtlety powerful. Still very youthful. Exceptional wine. (465 views)
Tasted by CHarder on 6/10/2023 & rated 95 points: This is brilliant. Perfectly mature and rounded but still with freshness and minerality cutting through. Drink now-2yrs I think to keep balance. (584 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/18/2022 & rated 94 points: A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Cristal, DP, Giacosa, Produttori and etc. (Black Salt, Washington DC): Expressive nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, pineapple, lemon curd, honey, candied ginger, saline and mineral. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered ripe yellow fruit, generous and dense, medium acidity, medium mineral, and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish. The fruit has turned from white to yellow. This is now rich and round, drinking well. (1805 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 6/1/2022 & rated 95 points: Crisp and precise, drinking great right now. (1445 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/21/2021: Tasted next to 2010 Dauvissat Vaillons. Deep yellow. Rounder and richer than that wine with more profoundly lemony flavors but less Chablis salinity. It definitely has some of the Raveneau beeswax and honey at this point. Excellent stuff. (1852 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 9/23/2021 & rated 92 points: Lemon curd, classic Chablis aromatics. Nice acidity, but palate finishes somewhat short. (1541 views)
Tasted by rlove on 6/26/2019 & rated 91 points: Pear, iodine, and stone aromas prelude mineral-laden pear flavors. Vaillons is generally the Raveneau Cru that shows the least producer typicity and while this is very good and one could call the vintage the producer might remain elusive. Not at all fat but acidity is a tad short and I suspect this is at its peak and won't improve much from here. (2229 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 2/2/2019: Dinner at Le Soufflot, Meursault: Deep golden colour. Spice, citrus, pear and white flower perfumes. Also, minerals and some creamy honey. On palate, showing its vintage marker, a beautifully balanced Chablis, drinking so well now. Citrus and orchard fruit with oyster shell and wet limestone. “Peaches, lovely balance, yet so balanced”, said Andrew. Ripe, rich and full, but with assertive yet focussed and integrated acidity. Good length. No hurry needed to drink this Chablis but I doubt it’ll improve from here. Very good with my mushroom and trout dishes. (2584 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 11/16/2018: Really good. Drinking well now though no rush. (1798 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 10/29/2018 & rated 92 points: Beautiful raveneau. So much minerality, pear, white flowers and yellow fruit. High density backed by sharp acidity. Exceptional with perfect balance and volume. The ripeness of the fruit and the chablis salinity are in perfect harmony. It definitely has upside from here. This is for the long haul. 92-93 (1847 views)
Tasted by Bobhelge on 10/25/2018 & rated 91 points: The big Raveneau tasting (Kjell Tores Mat - Oslo): Sweet botrytis core with hay and ripe citrus. chalky palate. Intense and long. (1510 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/28/2018 & rated 90 points: Wines at Smaller Meals and Between Meals; 6/24/2018-7/5/2018 (Cote d'Or): Lots of apple, well rounded, good minerality, moderate acidity. Good weight and richness, but surprisingly mature for this producer, this vintage, and a bottle that hasn’t left Burgundy. If representative, drink and enjoy young. (1909 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 4/18/2018: Spontaneous Mini-Paulée-Roumier, Rousseau, Raveneau... (Burgundy): Medium yellow. Faint honey and truffles. Great feel. Bitter citrus and excellent acidity. Yum. Only surprise is how developed it is for its age. Based on this bottle, I'd say drink over the next 3 or 4 years. (1969 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 5/3/2016 & rated 92 points: A private lunch (Restaurant Le Petit Nice ***, Marseille, France): A generous, soft and rounded style, especially for Raveneau and for a vintage like 2010. The fruit is very ripe (there even are some tropical notes), the lemon is almost buttery rather than delicately creamy, the oyster shell minerality is only lightly represented (chilling helps of course) and for once the wine feels a bit loose on the palate; complete finish, length is good. A very good wine, but in my experience a bit untypical. (3011 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 8/6/2015 & rated 94 points: Mostly French dinner - Rayas, 00 Lafite, 13 Trump, H Lignier CDR and etc. (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): I always find and love mountain stream/saline in Ravenau. Always so cool and thirst crunching despite decadent sweet fruits. Medium expressive nose displaying white fruits, pear, citrus, white flowers, flint, honeysuckle, mineral and saline. Very good concentration, strong presence of mineral, decadent and dense yet cool white fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and lovely long finish. Perfectly delicious in very Raveneau way! (3953 views)
Tasted by rlove on 7/30/2015 & rated 90 points: Ripe nose of peach, dried flower, and crushed rock. Candied peach and green apple in the mouth, a ripe style yet light and inviting. Classic Raveneau in that each vintage and cru is a unique expression. Medium-low acidity; a little more would make this a killer bottle. Drink now through 2020. (2628 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 4/14/2014 & rated 89 points: Raveneau Chablis Tasting 2010 1er Cru and some Grand Crus (@ Wijnhandel Peeters Rotterdam): Iron, flowers and apple. More developped yet than the "Fôret". On the palate some fresh acidity, yellow fruit, minerality. Long finish with pleasant bitterness. (3722 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 3/30/2014: Domaine Raveneau (@ Rotterdam, Netherlands): Some hints of tropical fruit on the nose, with notes of peach and pear. Soft medium bodied. Great length with some butter and mineral tones. (3405 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 10/24/2013 & rated 93 points: One day later and a totally different experience. Rich and opulent with a penetrating flavor. Long, long on the finish. So good that we ordered a second bottle. (2537 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 10/23/2013: This bottle was pretty tight and unyielding. We decanted it and it slowly came around but never fully expressed it self. Golden nectar with peaches and cinnamon. At Caves Madeleine, Beaune. (1986 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 8/17/2013 & rated 93 points: Kelly’s visit, two nights of great wines - Burgundy and Rhone (Marks duckhouse, Falls Church, Va): Initially served a bit too cold, pear, lemon, honeysuckle, white flower, limestone and saline. Once again cold mountain stream that I associate with Raveneau, very mineral, bright acidity and long finish. Another lovely bottle of the 10 Raveneau. (2778 views)
Tasted by llink on 3/9/2013 & rated 91 points: VVW tasting. Quick impressions. Powdered lemon dust, lemon chalk on the nose. Some spicy oak notes poke thru on the nose and again on the palate. Surprisingly uncoiled/rounder palate, although this definitely has a good acidic spine to provide some edge and lift on the medium finish. (1962 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 2/8/2013 & rated 93 points: Chalk, lemon and pear on the nose. The palate is beautiful with rich, powerful fruit and sparkling cleansing acidity. Long and delicious, I loved it. (1556 views)
Tasted by sehill on 2/2/2013 & rated 93 points: Decanted and poured, this wine gave an outstanding showing. The wine was tasted side by side with the 2010 Dauvissat Vaillons. This wine seemed slightly more focused and complete than its counterpart. The aromatics offer oyster shell, sea salt, chalk and lemon that are well defined and harmonious. The color is slightly lighter than the '10 Dauvissat with a hue of very light yellow. It is youthful and vibrant. The light to medium bodied palate shows tension and texture with acidity on the finish. Both wines benefited with decanting and improved with airing. (1510 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
