Tasted by pmeeno on 12/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Yes, this is a mature wine as exhibited by its rust color. However, this wine is still excellent. Red fruits dominate and there is a wonderful tartness that stimulates my taste buds. Flavor lasts forever in the mouth. But drink up! (301 views)
Tasted by Axone on 4/24/2022: Vin décevant à mon goût.
Aération 24h.
Nez pas net, proche de la basse cour. Bouche beaucoup plus propre, élégante mais qui ne prend jamais d'ampleur.
Les autres convivies ont apprécié,surtout la bouche. (1156 views)
Tasted by jviz on 8/15/2021 & rated 93 points: In fine form this weekend. Kindly shared by AustinTX1, this bottle was purchased from Winebid and cellared for a couple years. Having been burned (mean that literally) by a few early 00 CdPs this year, 01 Marcoux VV showed better than expected — a lot of sediment and should be stood up for a couple weeks. Notes of ripe strawberries without any raisened or roasted tones, and TONS of white pepper spice. Great bottle (1873 views)
Tasted by edwardochu on 4/24/2021 & rated 93 points: extreme elegant that is just beginning to shed its baby fat.. a touch of funk that blew away quickly, reviewing a very clean wine that is vibrant, good fruit core but definitely not overripe. It has very good acidity I think the next phase of this wine will be even better (1585 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/7/2019 & rated 95 points: Vraiment Grenache with the essence of the land bursting from the glass from the getgo; it is powerful, yet quite elegant, very true to the grape, sweet Grenache galore, mature but in no way fading - still powerfull, this has five years left, at least. Despite the alcohol, this is almost too easy to drink.

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/16/2019 flawed bottle: High End Châteauneuf-du-Pape Dinner (Steak and Vine - La Grange IL): Tasted single blind in flight. Corked. (3210 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/21/2018 & rated 94 points: From PBs cool cellar in France:
Cool, tight - quite closed and firm; opens slowly, but surely and the concentrated, sweet Grenache is showing. Extremely well structured wine, still young. 94+ point.
#Bagnols-en-Forêt (2297 views)
Tasted by Papies on 5/12/2018 & rated 92 points: Saturday night at The Papies ( Eurovision & Fuego dinner) (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Decanted for a good 2 hours and definitely needs its time.
We continue to rate this wine lower and lower and we believe this is because when stacked next to softer, less powerful wine it stands out too much and loses its elegance. Having rated this 96 a few years ago and then 93 a month ago or so we gave a go of our last bottle ( this was with a waxed capsule) . Much like an american syrah / grenache power house with 15% alcohol it demands attention and delivers a powerful message. Great to be paired with food and stood very well with a well aged beef dinner but felt a bit brash vs Lagrange 1996 & Grange de Peres 2005 that we had before. This however would be a great wine for people with a love for powerful Napa style syrah wines. 92-93 and honestly left us a bit perplexed (2600 views)
Tasted by Papies on 4/20/2018 & rated 93 points: This is definitely a special wine and needs decanting. We will not sing the praises to the level that we did in 2013 (Papies 96) but we really liked this. Impressively has a 15% Alc which is carries well once it opens up. At the beginning while the wine is opening the alc is a bit out of tune. But once the wine develops and blossoms its a different experience. Very expressive nose, elegant and singing, herbs de provence, dark frutied, spice. Very expressive. One the palate this is a big wine but not heavy albeit the strength of this is more like an Alban Syran than a CdP. Still it has the stuffing to keep the wine in check. Very difficult to predict where this wine ends up in the future though. 93 this time round. (2381 views)
Tasted by jerbearjb on 11/24/2016 & rated 91 points: This bottle was good but fading fast. (2726 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/31/2016 & rated 94 points: This one from my own cellar, normal order restored; tight, very tight, needs air, very concentrated in an intense, rather than flappy sort of way and just beginging to look like real wine. Rich, but cool, and yes, balanced. Tasted vis-a-vis the cuvée normale, very Old School tasters would prefer the latter as of now, but this one has years to go. Will wait at least two years for the next (2589 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 10/12/2015 & rated 93 points: Wow, this is the best Châteauneuf I've had in years ... Deep, dark colour. An intriguing, complex bouquet of mixed spices, tar, Black Doris plums, old leather, prunes, raspberries and smokey, grilled game meats. Savoury but with underlying sweetness, showing some spicy oak. Similar complex flavours, with some sweetness on the attack, followed by more savoury flavours. A large scaled, concentrated, dense wine for sure, but in balance and not blousey. Very ripe, but sufficient acidity. Meaty and powerful but with spherical, fine grained tannins. Carries its high alcohol (15%) very well. Give it a decent decant. Drunk over three evenings. On its drinking plateau but no hurry here. (3592 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/11/2015 & rated 97 points: Pure kirsch, garrigue and black raspberries pop as soon as the cork leaves the bottle. Pure silky cherries coat your palate, leaving you with fresh, pure red fruits, herbs and an interesting, discreet, buttery, chocolate note in the long, elegant finish. This is drinking great today. If you have a bottle, pop a cork! (3704 views)
Tasted by beatles on 5/4/2015: No rating. From a warmer cellar than mine, tonight this came out quite oxidized at first with a tired nose. It did freshen up a bit with air, though never reaching the heights, that one could have hoped. Narrowed a victory over a rather tired and worrying example for Clos des Papes 2001 from my own cellar. (- from HSA, #celebratingblindtastingchampionship) (2979 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 4/12/2015 & rated 93 points: "lost" the competition against Domaine de la Morderee Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois same vintage in a blind tasting, for me too one-dimensional in a cherry liqueur way. mighty, fruity, concentrated, but I miss the comnplexity or elegance for a higher rating. Will try it in a few years again (2229 views)
Tasted by Axone on 4/6/2015 & rated 94 points: Très joli chateauneuf construit sur la finesse.
Des airs de parenté avec Rayas.
A attendre encore 5 à 10 ans. (2333 views)
Tasted by KPB on 3/22/2014: For some reason this bottle of the 2001 Marcoux VV is sort of dull, a bit weedy and tannic, and while the nose has a hint of the wild raspberry aromas that normally distinguish this wine, the overall expression is sort of dull. I'll chalk it up to a closed bottle. (2808 views)
Tasted by beatles on 1/4/2014: So young and so, so tight. I do not want to score this ... extremely concentrated, reminding me a bit of the Beaucastel 2001, when it was younger. Right now, the alcohol seems quite evident here, not quite balanced, which surprises me, because the VV 2003 is one of the balanced stars of that difficult vintage - and 2001 should be better, not?. Oh well, it's wine, it's alive - will store them in the distant part of the cellar and wait another two or three years before popping the next one of this ... (2661 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/17/2013 & rated 96 points: Majestic wine even at its youth. Reminded us a lot of the Rayas 2001 (Papies 94) but with a touch more power and definition. The nose is still of red fruit, beautiful nose, Burgundian in a way of inviting you to go back for more and more. No secondary elements, pure , elegant red fruit foreground with dark fruit and herb background. On the palate it is firm, vibrant, young but very giving and very balanced. Sheer elegance. If it evolves they way with think with is will be a 100 pointer for us in a few years. Must buy. 96-97 (2838 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 11/3/2013 & rated 96 points: Northern Rhone Dinner (Pavillon & Grillet) (Roswell, GA): Holy crap this was good, this being the third and best bottle of the bunch; so floral, feminine, sexy, classic CdP, Grenachey, sour cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, some fig, garrigue, leather, and other herbs; the frame poses as delicate and less brooding than other vintages this has near perfect balance to cruise for many more years though it is singing now, sweet fruit, savory, noble, and finishing with classic bitterness; love it, great to see this rivaled up against some of the best Northern Rhone has to offer, definitely held its own. (3316 views)
Tasted by KPB on 10/16/2010 & rated 96 points: This wine is still young and tight; needed to breath very slowly overnight. But then the spicy nose emerges -- an infant with amazing potential. Medium ruby, nose of rasberry fruit, granite dust, spice cake, toffee, leather. Very flavorful and yet in a light, burgundian style. With another ten years could be one of the greatest "feminine" styled wines... ever... (4698 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 3/7/2010: Decanted for a half hour. Powerful, spicy aromatics of dark crushed berries with smokey game and savory herbs. Fruit forward palate with a lot of structure and great acidity. Full bodied, long finish, very fine tannin. Great wine. (3567 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 1/14/2010: Decanted for roughly 2.5hrs. Very powerful aromatics, much more than my last bottle. Very spicy dark fruits; blue and blackberry; with huge savory herb and smokey, grilled meat component. Leather. Expansive on the palate, very fruit forward with a large mineral backbone. Extremely long finish with very fine tannins. Outstanding. (3508 views)
Tasted by psmith on 12/1/2009: Ken's Birthday (Inovasi; Lake Bluff, IL): Really nice, full-bodied Chateauneuf that kept getting better as the night went on. Deep, dark, slightly porty grenache fruit. Leather, spice, blackberry notes. Full throughout. Fine tannins. Really good. (4425 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 12/1/2009: Ken's Birthday (Inovasi, Lake Bluff, IL): A spicy, crushed dark blue and red berry nose with leather and earth. Very nice body and kept picking up weight throughout the flight. Great length with fine tannin and great acidity on the finish. Mineral backbone. I was a little afraid of this getting lost in the flight, but it held its own quite nicely. (4402 views)

Until the late nineties Marcoux was run by Phillipe Armenier. The bio-dynamic principles inspired by Rudolf Steiner meant very much to him. The planning of the works in the fields and the cellars was done out from the phases of the lunar cycle. In connexion with this the practice in the vineyards of course was (and stil is) strictly organic. Suddenly Phillipe Armenier left the domaine - and France. He lives today in California. Back at the domain is since then the two sisters Catherine and Sofie Armenier. They are perhaps not quite as focused on stars and planets as Phillipe but bio-dynamic principles also means a lot to them. Catherine is responsible for the fields and Sofie for the vinification. They both do it with great succes.
The Armenier family has deep roots in Chateauneuf du Pape. They can date their forefathers back to 1344.

Marcoux has 17.5 ha. One of them with white varieties. The average age is about 50 years. 5.5 ha is 90 years old. Half of these old vines are used for Vieilles Vignes. The rest goes to the classic cuvée. The vinification is traditional for the appellation with maturing mostly in foudres. The principles can be described by citing Sofie Armenier: “We interfere with the vinification as little as possible. We don’t do any pigeage to get color, because we just don’t want to get in the way of the fruit.”
From only 2 ha. is made Cotes du Rhone and furthermore a Lirac, from vineyards in this appellation, made in cooperation with Louis Canto at Domaine de la Ronciere.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
