Tasted by maxima on 8/29/2021 & rated 93 points: De loin la meilleure jusqu`ici.
SUBLIME! (1933 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/30/2019 & rated 91 points: Vertical, dry, some herbs and spice, a very Italian feel despite it's being a Merlot, the origin speaks; seems mature, but in no way old. Refreshing after our intense days in the Rhône. (2317 views)
Tasted by Puristica on 11/9/2019 & rated 93 points: P&P from magnum bottle, close to or on its peak. Drinks beautifully now, nice ripe fruit and hints of tar. Open now. (1669 views)
Tasted by AURUM on 12/23/2018 & rated 90 points: Still vital, a lot of dark berries and light oak in the nose with a little sweetness. Dark cherries, plum, integrated oak and good acidity. Soft but present tannins. Good balance and body medium plus.
A very "easy to drink and easy to like wine", but a wine which is quite straight forward. (2092 views)
(3094 views)
Tasted by macker100 on 3/27/2015 & rated 91 points: Last bottle. Consistent with prior notes, additional mature notes of tobacco and meat. (4274 views)
Tasted by Bill Bucklew on 2/20/2015 & rated 88 points: Inky black, but the nose is somewhat reticent, there is a subtle black fruit nose with a undertone of roasted coffee. Medium plus to full bodied and medium plus acidity. It's a bit odd to have such a dark fruit profile and such a bright acidity. After an hour in the decanter, it opened up a bit, and became more lush. Very ripe notes of Black plum, black olive, macerated black cherries, hints of tobacco and cedar. Definitely needs some air to open up. (3885 views)
Tasted by wurzel68 on 1/18/2015 & rated 88 points: Sicherlich bereits etwas über dem Peak!
Tasted by JSOL on 12/16/2014 & rated 92 points: This is really not my kind of wine but it is stupid to say that it is not good. Sure, it's like a slab of meat smothered in caramalised onions, grilled mushrooms, blue cheese sauce and a rich cranberry and tarragon jam but that is what some people like and, given what it is trying to do, it is doing it pretty damn well. It is a bloody big wine, very juicy, meaty and fruity with hints of burnt berries but at the same time fresh and balanced with considerable depth.

That being said, I'll stick to the old school Chi Clas in future. (3805 views)
Tasted by Magno on 6/13/2014: Used to like this one much more. My palate has changed. Good quality earthy cherry and spices, but also very intrusive wooden tanins. Not my cup of tea anymore. (4309 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 5/10/2014 & rated 93 points: Very fresh with big blueberry and blackberry fruit. Nice acidity and balance. Leather and floral notes. Long finish with integrated fine grained tannin. Big burst of berries on the finish with licorice notes. Great wine. Sangiovese and Merlot. (2427 views)
Tasted by DC 1111 on 2/18/2014 & rated 94 points: I enjoyed this wine immensely. Opened the first bottle along side of an expensive CA cab and this showed to be superior with more depth and balance. Had the second bottle months later and it didn't disappoint. I bought some more and saw that the price had jumped up quite a bit. I guess the secret is out. My wine of the year. This is the highest that I ever rated a wine in Cellartracker. Sorry I don't have a detailed description. Drank both bottles with company and was unable to detail a tasting note, but overall impression was great. (2720 views)
Tasted by vsbastosx on 1/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 2 hours.
Black dense colour. Lovely on the nose, fresh forest berries, toasted oak, strong floral scents with subtle liquorice. On the palate, this is full bodied, juicy, very good acidity, elegant tannins, balanced with medium-long aftertaste. This is excellent. Drink it now. (2433 views)
Assez long en finale. (2539 views)
Tasted by xuaeinw on 9/27/2013 & rated 92 points: Drank within in 1/2 hour of opening bottle. Still a powerful wine and I should have decanted or poured through Venturi. Opened up during the meal (hearty pasta dish). I believe it has a long life ahead of it. (2285 views)
Tasted by pot20 on 9/12/2013 & rated 89 points: Un vin plein au nez et en bouche. Belle bouteille. Peut rester en cave encore quelques années. (2338 views)
Tasted by bigjoe on 8/6/2013 & rated 91 points: Almost a wow...better than the 2001 drank this years (2415 views)
Tasted by lumpkins on 7/15/2013 & rated 92 points: gorgeous full bodied wine with lush black fruit & ainse; well balanced and long finish. (2497 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 6/23/2013 & rated 91 points: upon uncorking:
dark red-brown colour
pleasant tertiary aroma of ripe fruits
intense, full bodied, grip tannins, good acidity, nice harmony, ripe plums & cherries, chocolate, alcoholic, long enduring.

after 4 hours:
rustic and powerful. good quality. very enjoyable. (2514 views)

Bom vinho, pra quem gosta do estilo. (2469 views)
Tasted by aridan on 10/14/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby solid colour. Fresh on the nose. Blackberries, plums, not so much earth as expected and not nearly as developed colour/nose as the 1999 and 2001 I have opened recently. Big and long taste, supporting the nose. Moderate tannins, somewhat integrated already but still present. Drinking well now and was good with deep tasting, slow cooked bolognese sauce and pasta. Will match steak even better. Have 2 magnums of the same and will leave for another 2 years or so. (2976 views)
Tasted by macker100 on 10/10/2012 & rated 91 points: Slight improvement from 2010. Nose still has dark black fruits, mocha, currant. Tannins have receded on juicy palate of plums, blackberries, earth. I think this will get better with more cellar time as well. (2768 views)
Tasted by xuaeinw on 5/6/2012 & rated 92 points: Great with marinated flank steak and beans. Hearty wine, drinking well now and for several more years. (3224 views)
Tasted by pot20 on 3/12/2012 & rated 88 points: Beaux nez de fruits noirs et de cerise. Quelques odeurs tertières de sous-bois. Amplitude moyenne plus. Tannins un peu gommeux. A encore quelques années. (3349 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 3/1/2012 & rated 90 points: Super Toscan & Brunello di Montalcino evening (Maraboo restaurant): dark red-black color
earthy tertiary aroma
full body, coarse tannins, earthy & leather flavors, dense, thick, require early opening, great with meat and heavy dishes. Enduring aftertaste. (3645 views)

Barone Ricasoli

Producer website

Barone Ricasoli is the oldest winery in Italy, producing wine at the estate since 1141. The current owner, Barone Francesco Ricasoli, is the 32nd generation Baron of the family. Geremia and Ridolfo were the original Ricasolis, but it was in the year 1000 that the Ricasoli family was granted the highest degree of power over their feudal land, the title of "Barone" decreed directly from the King. This title signified full autonomy over their lands and those who inhabited them. After centuries of defending their land and people, the Ricasoli family was the first to utilize their farmland and vineyards, producing and selling their best wine production. It has been documented from as early as the 16th century that Brolio had exported wine to Amsterdam and England and from the beginning of the 20th century, Brolio wine had become renowned and exported all over the world.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
