Tasted by chayward on 1/12/2011 & rated 91 points: Wow! This is really drinking beautifully right now. The nose is complex and intense, both immediately upon opening and after an hour in the decanter. It's got blood, floral notes, prunes, pepper... A little less intense on the palate, but very smooth and well-integrated; everything is in balance at this point. Good finish. 91-92 (2907 views)
Tasted by dke on 11/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Complex, similar to previous notes. Nice combination of fruits, smoke, tobacco, salt and minerals (giving it a sweet and sour taste) but perhaps slightly less exciting than previous bottle. 89-90. (2977 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 6/1/2009 & rated 91 points: Same as in March - lovely wine for the medium term. (3164 views)
Tasted by dke on 5/23/2009 & rated 90 points: It takes 0.5-1hr to open up. On the nose candied cherries, iron/iodine, clove, nail polish, old wood, figs and blood (smell is total grenache). Very good medium body, with sweet fruits and a bit of meatiness and some spice. Great mouthfeel with juicy finish, still quite tannic but well integrated. Great experience, this can last and improve for several more years. Need to get one more. 90-91pts. It declined slightly by the next night: more tomato and old wood on the nose but also some pretty floral component and cherry liquor after 1 hour of air in a wine glass. Lots of sediment at the end. (3064 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 3/14/2009 & rated 91 points: Another bottle with lovely sweet fruit in among the pepper and garrigue. Opening up though probaby 3-5 years away from its peak. An excellent Chateauneuf. (3144 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 3/29/2008: This has firmed up quite a bit since I last had it in 2006. Big, old style chateauneuf with lots of pepper, dense liquorice fruit and most of the kirsch it was displaying seems to have gone. I thought this only a medium wine a couple of years ago - much bigger and denser now. Delicious now in a black tongue coating kind of way and loads of years ahead of it. (1083 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 11/12/2006 & rated 91 points: the best bottle of this so far, more gamey than previous bottles and with lovely sweet fruit. Superb now. (1303 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 10/14/2006 & rated 90 points: Better than the previous bottle, fuller, more power and a bit more youthful. Still drinking well now though. (1343 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 10/5/2006 & rated 89 points: A CNDP in the lighter style. Good savoury, earthy fruit and a bit of oak. This is enjoyable now as a food wine. It would keep for a few more years but I doubt would improve much, indeed perhaps not enough fruit for a long haul. Drink and enjoy now. (1323 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
