Community Tasting Notes (average 96.7 pts. and median of 97 pts. in 84 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by firstgrowth on 3/25/2024 & rated 97 points: Incredible wine, still perfect after 56 years. (337 views)
Tasted by firstgrowth on 3/24/2024 & rated 97 points: Amazing wine, still young and full of fruit, great out of the bottle and better 2 hours of decanting. Saved one glass for today see if it keeps getting better. (273 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 9/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour into a decanter - mold cap underneath the capsule, but otherwise in good condition. In the glass, purple/auburn at the rim, shading to a dark, almost-black purple at the core. On the nose, cassis, mint, and oxidative notes of port and prune, the latter of which blew off after 30 minutes or so. On the palate, the aged notes of mint and cedar present themselves in more assertive fashion, but currants, kirsch, and smoky grilled meat lead the way. Best showing of our bottles thus far, albeit still well short of expectations. (1133 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 8/20/2023 & rated 92 points: Vanilla and cassis. (1166 views)
Tasted by BradE on 8/8/2023: Lovely mature Unico. (1146 views)
Tasted by Ralph_ on 12/9/2022 flawed bottle: bad bottle (1804 views)
Tasted by UPL on 9/24/2022 & rated 100 points: clearly 100 P. - not much changed since 2018 - an epitome of wine - an nose to die for - unbelievable that a wine from 1968 is so beautiful - still youthful and full of life - be happy if you have this beauty in your cellar (1947 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/6/2022 & rated 96 points: Coffee and "kolonialhandel" here, a bit like a well, matured Bordeaux from the top shelf, perfect balance, smooth and in harmony.
#El Cellar de Can Rocca #JubileTasting (2177 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 7/17/2022 flawed bottle: 16 Mature Bordeaux Magnums 1945/47/55/59 (+Unico): Double blind flight with three random magnums produced a completely unexpected winner. While the Vega Sicila Unico was corked, the Palmer 1945 (91 pts) was a bit past its peak. An intoxicating aroma profile dominated by malty notes and black tea on the positive side, a crumbling structural frame and some faint unwanted soy notes which sadly got more pronounced with time on the negative side. First place for the Swiss Merlot Vinattieri from 1986 (95 pts). Elegance, a beautiful fruit core, minty freshness - a seamless experience from start to finish.

TN: Badly corked.

Decanting: Double decanted 3+ hours before the tasting. (2637 views)
Tasted by WIBA on 7/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Very Sweet, Bordeaux nose. Silky. Velvet. Drink up (1501 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 7/2/2022 flawed bottle: Richter Magnum Rarity Tasting (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): Tasted at a grand magnum rarities tasting hosted by a merchant and collector in Zurich. Most bottles were Bordeaux from the 40s and 50s. The top 3 wines 1. Cheval Blanc 1955 (98), 2. Ausone 1959 (97), 3. Haut-Brion 1955 (95). Full list of wines sorted by score and additional observations included in the tasting story.

Tasting notes
A noticeable und indisputable cork stain and hence hard to dissect anything underneath the cardboard notes. But on balance appeared pretty minty with a nicely ripe fruit. Otherwise pretty fresh and juicy on the palate. (1638 views)
Tasted by G_H on 7/2/2022 flawed bottle: Annual Richter All-Magnum Extravaganza: Second corked bottle of this, such a shame (1420 views)
Tasted by kevinpatrick on 8/12/2021: Cork Vault August Bottle Share--78 Giacosa Riserva, 85 Certan De May, 96 Calon-Segur and more (Charlotte, NC): 70% tempranillo, 20% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot and 3% malbec
You would never guess this wine was 50 years old. A 20 year old Red Burgundy? Sure. But not five decades of aging. This wine was in bloom on the evening -- rich, complex nose of dried figs and red cherries. More finesse than power, the mouthfeel was delicate but the flavors of dark cherries, black currants and dried herbs were fulsome. Would have loved to savor this wine in a more intimate setting if only to selfishly enjoy the rich subtleties of this beauty. (2817 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 9/23/2020 & rated 96 points: Oh la la ... concentrated nose if there ever was one, sweetest fattest vanillin sugar, intoxicating. Not even daring to try a sip of this. Just a head turner and showing how high wine can fly. You must like the style though to be sure, but this is so well made. (3786 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 5/28/2020 & rated 97 points: The 1968 Vega Sicilia Unico is the most complex and profound Vega Sicilia I have ever had. I would have guessed it was 20 years old if served blind, and the ageability is one of the greatest qualities of Vega Sicilia.

Intense dark fruits and savoury barnyard. Very inky and super rich with extraordinary depth and ripe fruits. Extremely dense and youthful. Darkest shade of dark fruits, black tea and cigar box. Very tight with firm tannins. This wine certainly has a long life ahead. Stunning!

Tasted by fcxj on 8/19/2019 & rated 94 points: EOHK. This remains a dark, huge, youngish wine. Unbelievably large production. (145362) (4412 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 6/7/2019 & rated 99 points: 2nd of 3 bottles.
No formal note, see last note.
A transcendent wine for me on both occasions thus far. (2866 views)
Tasted by the player on 4/13/2019: Didn’t get the same wow effect from my second and last bottle of VS 68 like I did last year. Nonetheless, a tremendous wine. See previous note. (3099 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/23/2019 & rated 92 points: Dark purple with red hues, bricking, fading color, decent stain; sweet herbal note, sweet and sour red fruit cherry syrup, licorice, sweet raisins, brown sauce, glycerin, eucalyptus and clay notes. This showed so fresh I thought it was a '99 CdP. Unbelievably great shape and youthful, but seemed rather straight forward despite notes above. Re-tasted and seemed to get more complexity. Heritage Auction Blind Tasting at Jean-Georges Vegas. , (2990 views)
Tasted by rashcar on 11/25/2018 & rated 97 points: Dark ruby almost black. Like syrup in the glass with healthy legs. Cork was 3/4 of the way wet. Great nose that kept developing in the glass and long delicious finish. This was my oldest wine that I drank that was still good. (3412 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 10/28/2018 & rated 97 points: A fantastic bottle of legendary wine. Opened bottle for a couple hours before consuming. Deep dark purple in color. A spectrum of flavors and profiles - red fruits, blue fruits, black fruits, plums, charcoal and ash, sauvage and so much more. Very well built and drinking as if its got plenty of time left. Have had older Unico's and they really seem to age gracefully. This was no exception. (3208 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Vega Sicilia Unicos (Peppercorn's (Hartford, CT)): Medium red, garnet rim. Sweet red fruits, cedar and spice. Palate offers notes of cassis and dried flowers. Silky tannins and a nice lingering, fresh finish. (2983 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 9/30/2018 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous tasting note. (2617 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 9/15/2018 & rated 92 points: An incredible birthday dinner: Light nose with toast, cherry, red berries and some forest floor. More flavour intensity and interest in the palate, there is a step up in richness and presence that matches the reputation of this vintage more closely. Lovely balance and texture, flowing into a very good length finish. If the nose was a bit more expressive this would have been superb. (2649 views)

Producer Website

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
