Tasted by yhn on 3/29/2010 & rated 80 points: Nose - pungent, mature, biting, smoky, ashy, delicately sweet, caramelized, cinnamon, redwood, candied orange zest, breakfast tea.
Biting, tobacco, kirsch, peppermint and spearmint, slightly bitter chalky finish. (4310 views)
Tasted by Not Levine on 5/13/2009: Opened with pizza from Zeek's, which recently opened in West Seattle (yay!). I was concerned as the capsule (real lead from the feel of it) wasn't looking too great, and when I cut it off the cork looked even worse. I got the cork out - not in one piece - and it was kind of saturated all the way up. But the nose - wow! Reminded me of a good red Burgundy. Quite fruity, with some dark cherry and that hint of acidity which tickles the back of your throat when you smell it (in a good way!). The color was pretty deep purple, a bit cloudy, with some bricking at the edges of the glass. On the palate, the fruit wasn't nearly as evident as on the nose, but there was cassis and brambly zinberry lurking in the glass. Cedar, leather, spicebox - it wasn't aged Burgundy or Bordeaux, but has some elements of both. I could tell it was an old wine, but it held up VERY well. The tannins were pretty well resolved, and while the alcohol on the label is 14.6%, it sure didn't have any heat. All in all, a welcome surprise, and a very nice experience. My wife liked it too, and her palate has been off for a year (pregnancy, birth). Thanks, Errol! (4978 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 6/14/1995 & rated 92 points: RICH DEEP FRUIT IN THE BOUQUET WITH PLUMS AND CIGAR BOX. RICH FRUIT IN THE FLAVOR WITH DRIED FRUIT PREDOMINATING. NICE LEGS AND COMPLEXITY. LONG PORT LIKE FINISH. (2017 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Ridge Geyserville

(Ridge Spring 2012 Wine Club notes)

In 1966, Ridge made its first Geyserville from a strip of river rock and clay soils along the abandoned San Francisco and Northern Pacific tracks. Over time, we have added two adjoining vineyards on this same defined site. Each vintage is distinct but typical flavor characteristics include the blackest of blackberry fruit, ripe plum, cedar, and a distinctive mineral quality.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
