Tasted by Remon K on 7/21/2023 & rated 96 points: How many Pinot Noirs of this quality are there at this price? It's a blessing to be able to drink wine comparable to Burgundy Grand Crew in the 100$ (691 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 2/28/2022 & rated 94 points: Delicious sour red cherry, rhubarb, and earth on the nose and savory palate with floral notes the lovely long finish. (1478 views)
Tasted by davudvl on 2/1/2022 & rated 89 points: Lots of secondary and tertiary flavors. Almost no fruit left. Tasted a little “ thin” to me. (1346 views)
Tasted by CatK2k on 1/8/2022: Fantastic! (1258 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 12/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Delicious sour red cherry, rhubarb, and earth on the nose and palate with floral notes, finishing long with lovely acidity. (1285 views)
Tasted by thalver on 4/25/2021: Quite advanced, turning cloudy brick orange at the rim, it looked and tasted considerably older than a 2002 Burgundy that was also at the table. Generally, cloudiness and color doesn't much concern me, but this bottle lacked the energy and clarity that a 2009 Rivers Marie Sonoma Coast showed last year. In the case of this bottle, it seems to be on its downward slope. Disappointing given the price of admission. (1422 views)
Tasted by zinnut on 1/15/2021 & rated 89 points: This was excellent with food. Afterwards it was dead. (1341 views)
Tasted by VinoDiver on 9/28/2020 & rated 94 points: Lovely wine with plenty of structure left. Drinks well now with about 45 min of air or should continue to age well. (1377 views)
Tasted by MLwine on 8/9/2020 & rated 92 points: At first, I thought this was dead. No fruit at all. But after a little air, it started to show its stuff. Lovely, understated, interesting pinot. Don't wait much longer; drink it up while it is still good. (1454 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/5/2020 & rated 87 points: A good mouthful of West Coast Pinot. However, I found it flabby and a bit tired. Drink up. (87) (1391 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 6/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Big, ripe and rich with pomegranate, cherry and raspberry notes. Not showing a lot of maturity, although the structure has softened. The ripeness comes across as a bit sweet... nice, but not sure I would want to drink more than a glass. (1313 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 4/5/2020 & rated 91 points: 10 years old for the entry level pinot... yet still quite primary and vibrant. Full of red fruits, spice and orange peel. Still quite alive on day 2. Very impressive. (1188 views)
Tasted by jc510 on 2/12/2020: fell apart 2 hours in, big wine, classic Sonoma Coast profile. Nice nose. It's possible this bottle was not stored well. (1315 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 6/14/2019 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour and enjoyed over a three day period.
First day was with food (turkey tacos, in case you were wondering).
Final day, the wine was tasted on its own.
Ruby-brown color. Wine shows some bricking.
Nose offers tangerine peel and some red cherry and sandalwood notes.
Deep red fruits - cranberry, ripe raspberries and that orange/tangerine peel element. Nice richness to the wine without being candied. The orange peel element is quite distinctive and present.
This held up quite well on the third day, with good fruit and acidity all nicely balanced and inviting.
A delicious wine. (1692 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 9/9/2018 & rated 92 points: Cloudy ruby red. Sweet cranberry and pomegranate fruit with some orange peel on the finish. Not as heavy and lacking the cherry cola flavors so prominent in many California Pinots. Well balanced, very lovely. (2015 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/31/2018: This poured even a little bit brickish in color (surprising as 2010 not that old). Lots of orange peel. Maybe some sour red fruits. A good kindof every day bottle, but didn't jump out at me. Fun to try though as I've heard great things but never tried before. (2126 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 3/31/2018 & rated 89 points: PnP, nose is all about freshly peeled oranges. Color is a bit cloudy and a touch brickish. The palate is orange peel, herbs and cherry cola - some acid. This is okay but not really in my wheelhouse. (2204 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 3/21/2018: PNP and drunk over 2 nights. A bit cloudy but very nice on the nose with classic pinot bite. Tastes of sour cherry and cranberry and some citrus....went down easy. Not cheap but a very nice wine. (2128 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/13/2018 & rated 90 points: The Rotating Dinners, II.3: Rivers Marie 2008-2014 (Chicago, IL): This was my wine of the night. The nose and palate show a fruit profile that is ripe, but with tart elements. The generous and expansive fruit here leans to the red end of the spectrum. And even though the ripeness here makes you perceive the wine as being somewhat sweet, there's still some acidity to lift this wine up from being heavy. This is what my conception of great California pinot is, but no matter what, that is not a genre that I enjoy. (2920 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/13/2018 & rated 94 points: Rotating Dinner Series: Rivers Marie (The Bristol - Chicago, IL): Served double blind in flight on 08/10 Summa OV and 10 Gioia. A wow, lifted nose of cherry, raspberry, blueberry and ethereal spices. Classic Sonoma Coast aromas. The palate is gorgeously silky and lithe. So pure and precise with good richness. Long, lifted finish. This falls right within my ideal of Rivers Marie from cool, coastal vineyards. (2353 views)
Tasted by gsiokis on 2/17/2018 & rated 93 points: One of the fav's of the night. Sour Cherry. Long finish (1348 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 11/5/2017 & rated 95 points: 14.5% abv. Medium burgundy red, expressive aromas. Raspberry, a little black cherry, a minty note and baking spice on the palate. Tonight this wine was absolutely singing and I'd expect it will continue to age and old well for many years. (1661 views)
Tasted by btock on 6/24/2017 & rated 92 points: 2nd time I've had the pleasure with this one. First bottle was the better drink, but this was still good. Aromatics are so engaging. Spice, orange rind, incense, so alluring. Palate was very deft, but not the wow of bottle from a year ago. Paired with the '10 Occidental from R-M and that was great. Red fruits and spice were the lead on the Summa. Very nice bottle drinking well now. (1915 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 5/23/2017 & rated 93 points: PnP. My first old vines from Rivers-Marie; loved the older W-S and more recent Littorai bottles. Medium ruby. Kaleidocopic intense nose - spice, mint, berries, apple, and perhaps a hint of blood orange. On the palate initially a bit constricted in the mid-palate but with a very long and intense grapey finish. This needs to stretch. Lovely wine after 30 minutes or so. Last and only bottle. On added point: this seemed to fade quite rapidly - by the next day it was a shadow of its initial self. Drink up. (1917 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 3/4/2016: Drinking well. Pomegranate, raspberry, rhubarb, orange peel, pine needles, lots of juicy acids up front with just enough tannins to hold it together on the finish. Long, tart finish. Great way to welcome back the Underwoods to Netflix! (2833 views)

2010 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines

2010 Rivers-Marie Summa Old Vines Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - 137 cases, 13.0% alc., 80% new oak
A few weeks ago after getting both kids to sleep, Genevieve comes down stairs, picks up the glass of wine I've poured her, takes a quick smell and says “this is Summa Old Vines.” That in a nutshell is what we try to achieve with this site. We've always been drawn to its distinctiveness and we don't ever to want to do anything to get in its way. Checking my notes from last year, the 2010 edition comes across very similarly: expansive nose, red fruits, orange peel, sweet hay, pine needles, black tea and red/white floral elements. Young, it's always a wine more about potential and breadth than depth. Picked October 20th just shy of 1 ton per acre, it possesses remarkable weight for a wine that struggled to hit 13% alcohol.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
