Tasted by IAmVintage on 12/25/2022 & rated 93 points: A family favorite Zinfandel for our Christmas feast of Beef Wellington that would make Julia Child proud. Yes it's extracted and unctuous but not overly and with balance of spice and character that mated wonderfully. Yummy... :-p (592 views)
Tasted by IAmVintage on 11/1/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted, aerated & served at cellar temp. Big deep unctuous Zin with plenty of character. All well integrated at this age. (1574 views)
Tasted by lewisrise on 10/16/2020 & rated 87 points: Good nose but palate is disjointed and alcohol was prominent (1465 views)
Tasted by JSolo on 8/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Peak drinking now. Could not be better. (1445 views)
Tasted by JSolo on 6/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Consumed on 5/10 and 6/10/20. Consistent. Very good! (1481 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 2/1/2020 & rated 93 points: Fabulous Zin. (1255 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 5/26/2019 & rated 92 points: Martinelli Jackass vineyard 2010. Continues to surprise me as this tastes like something other than zinfandel. Can't place the flavor of the grape, but it's not the jammy, denseness I sometimes get with other zins. Color was deep purple and the cork held together well also. High octane alcohol at 17% and I sure can taste it, but it doesn't overpower or blot out the fruit. That sais, You will feel this after a glass or two. I taste this most on the side of the tongue and the back of my top palate. Feel like this must have evolved since first bottled. Long finish. 92 for me. (64 views)
Tasted by csimm on 8/25/2018 & rated 92 points: A powerful and spicy Zinfandel, with a decent push of power and tannic fortitude washing over the wild blackberry and black pepper notes. Thankfully, this steers away from being jammy or overly fruity (as some more plush Zins can be). Some booze fires off on the back end here, clamping down on some of the flavors. However, this wine has enough complexity and pure fruit to push through the effect of some of the biting heat. The million dollar question is whether or not the fruit can outpace the tannins at some point if given more time to age and potentially integrate?

With air, this wine became even more spicy, which I personally found to heighten my interest in it. Solid grip; a serious Zinfandel if there ever was one, reminding me a little of some of Turley's Zinfandels from the late 90's.

I preferred this to the more fruit-driven and rounded 2015 Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel served beside it. If you're planning on drinking the Jackass now, best to give it some serious airtime. Otherwise, another year+ in bottle might be prudent. (3017 views)
Tasted by tfesmgk on 3/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Still great though the alcohol content is still too high affecting overall taste (2320 views)
Tasted by bzell on 2/26/2017 & rated 93 points: It has been 3 years since I last had this wine and I like it more. Needs a lot of air to open up but once it does the fruit and complexity comes forward. (2258 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 10/15/2016 & rated 92 points: Solid Zin, extremely well balanced. Not quite as rich as some others, but still very, very nice. (2434 views)
Tasted by NapaInBaltimore on 10/18/2015 & rated 93 points: Great zin -- a little over the top, but really tasty! (2910 views)
Tasted by tfesmgk on 5/14/2015 & rated 93 points: As good as a zin gets. Nice balance of spice and fruit. A bit hot at 17.4 but worth it. (2792 views)
Tasted by tc from santee on 5/9/2015 & rated 93 points: I found this 2010 a fascinating Zin, a little hot and closed down upon opening. The evolution and depth evolved over 3 days to a huge finish on day 3. Plum, dark cherries, spices, tar and on day 3 beautiful earth tones layered on top. I should expect nothing less from Martinelli, delicious! (1856 views)
Tasted by joeroth on 4/23/2015 & rated 94 points: Ready to drink (2123 views)
Tasted by DaninClearwater on 3/1/2015 & rated 94 points: great bottle of zin
high alcohol but very well balanced (1835 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 1/20/2015 & rated 92 points: Unrestrained in style or alcohol, a concentrated, powerhouse Zinfandel from a great old RRV vineyard. (1396 views)
Tasted by bzell on 4/18/2014 & rated 91 points: A big wine needs to air to open the fruit. Dark purple color longs legs with notes of rich sweet cherries on the nose. Initially hot on the palate after a while the fruit comes forward with plums and cherries emerging on the palate. I expected a longer finish but a very good wine none the less. (1636 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 9/29/2013 & rated 91 points: Hi alcohol (17.4%!) Good, but lacks some of the intensity and concentration I look for in Jackass. (2277 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 8/22/2013 & rated 94 points: A tale of contrasts - 17.4% alcohol!!! (undetectable by me) and yet in a light to medium bodied style. Not what I expected, but very enjoyable. I liked this better than the '11. Very interesting Jackass. (2062 views)
Tasted by dundeehills on 5/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Classic Sonoma zin, very mellow drinking with lots of fruit. Paired beautifully with a slow cooked pork shoulder. (2064 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 8/11/2012 & rated 95 points: Dinner Party @ Home (Costa Brava, 11 Island Avenue, #412): - Violet color with fast forming legs. It's in total harmony with a full body. Satin-Like texture with a long finish - WOTN. (3421 views)
Tasted by peterk on 8/2/2012 & rated 92 points: No need to wait. Big fruit masks the huge alcohol. Beautiful. (2270 views)
Tasted by peterk on 4/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Consistent with last note (2098 views)
Tasted by peterk on 4/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Less fruit than the Giuseppe & Luisa, but lovely all the same. I'm now drinking Martinelli Zins upon release - I have too many 10+ year old Zins from Martinelli whose heat has overtaken the fruit, so I'm drinking these from the top down. (2062 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
