Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by GrapeScott on 2/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Tasted side-by-side with a '70 Cos (my parents' wedding anniversary year), this once again showed extremely well, and was clearly the better and more youthful of the two wines. Notes consistent with my last bottle, tasted a few weeks ago. (953 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 1/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Fantastic bottle in fantastic condition. Cork was completely clean, extracted without effort using my Durand. Very top shoulder fill. Pours a dark garnet that reveals its age, but with very little bricking at the rim. Very Graves-like profile, with earth, berry and gravel notes. Lots of life here, with pretty cranberry, leather and tobacco notes on the palate, a healthy dose of acidity, and a long cedar and herb-tinged finish. Probably the best '70 I've tried to date, better even than the excellent Montrose. (909 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 10/16/2022 & rated 89 points: A Belated 52nd Birthday Celebration (Alisal Guest Ranch, Solvang, CA): Not as stellar a showing as prior bottles from this case, but still very enjoyable. Tertiary notes along with some drying cassis and spice, but the signature Graves cigar ash kind of aspects I had enjoyed before were absent, and there was a bit of barnyard in play. Still, not bad for a 52-year old. (1297 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 10/4/2021 & rated 93 points: An Ambitious Birthday Celebration Effort (Los Olivos, CA): As with a prior bottle from the same lot, this continues to amaze. The wine is still showing secondary characteristics, and all Graves signature notes are on display: sweet, gentle cherry notes interplay with some tobacco, ash and appropriate acidity. (1994 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 9/1/2021 & rated 94 points: One of a pair bought a few months ago. In excellent condition, base of neck level, no signs of seepage. Gentle nose of tobacco and bramble. Clean of any hint of excess oxidation. Tannins fully resolved. Body quite light. Finish is very persistent and lovely without obvious alcohol. Extremely gulpable! Would have peaked 25 years ago but still superb now. P.s. later aroma of orange spritz and more complexity. (2082 views)
Tasted by U.Herzog@treuhandheidelberg.de on 1/30/2021 & rated 91 points: 50 years! 20 years in my basement. Seemed zenith exceeded at the beginning, but after half an hour, fine sweetness, dark fruit, later tobacco, steadily persistent length, drink now, Suprise (1569 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 9/2/2019 & rated 91 points: -- decanted immediately before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --

NOSE: mature; autumn leaves; cherry; gamebird; medium+ expressiveness; about 30 minutes after opening the Nose transitioned to one of stony mint and wet rocks.

BODY: medium-light bodied; sediment present; garnet core, lightening to a tawny color at the edges; color is of medium-light to medium depth.

TASTE: mature; red-fruited; watery finish; medium strength leathery funk; gentle; not tannic; alc. not noticeable. This wine forces you into an exploration --- it doesn't come to you, rather you have to go to it. This gives lots of pleasure, especially for those who prefer fully mature Bdx., but it is on its downslope. Drink now.

Tasted by paulst on 6/24/2019 & rated 90 points: Nose maderized and not impressive; sweet concentrated raisen-blackberry; sweet-pungent finish. (2154 views)
Tasted by paulst on 5/31/2019 & rated 82 points: Over the hill; maderized iron and cedar; sweet blackberry; sweet finish; no tannin. (1815 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 4/17/2019 & rated 93 points: A stellar showing, really more secondary than tertiary, with a decade+ of life left. All the Graves signature notes: cherries, muted green pepper, tobacco, ash and a fine acidity which added energy to this beauty. Fully integrated tannins. Easily outclassed its enjoyable but straightforward sibling from 2003. (1939 views)
Tasted by William Kelley on 11/23/2016 & rated 92 points: From a cold cellar, this bottle of 1970 Haut-Bailly was showing beautifully, with a complex bouquet of sweet red cherry, dried currants, tobacco leaf, cigar ash and summer truffle. On the palate the wine is pure, juicy and elegant, with good concentration and melted tannins, underpinned by bright acidity; its suppleness and vibrancy give it a quite Burgundian palate impression, though the aromatics and flavors are distinctly Graves. (5285 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 10/13/2016 & rated 88 points: Haut Bailly (Medlar, London): Bright garnet. Lovely mature claret nose. Savoury, cedary gentle attack. Good mid palate acidity. Starting to fade with a slightly Woody earthy finish. (*)** (3471 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 10/13/2016: Haut Bailly Dinner (Medlar, Chelsea): Pale/medium garnet, wide pale garnet/mahogany rim. Dusty earth nose, very developed. Medium bodied, vestiges of red fruit but mainly dusty earth, vegetal notes, no structure to speak of, a touch lifeless, flat medium length finish. Not without interest but past its best. ** (3932 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 3/20/2016 & rated 93 points: At 46, this wine delivers the ultimate old claret experience of vintage bordeaux. Very light in body and color, perfect in clarity, it grew and grew for 4 hours and was still growing and getting tighter with time. Truffle scents, dried red flowers and faint earth, and a gripping, semi sweet and femininely elegant ending summarizes it...Definitely drinking better than many 1970 first growths...In my opinion, much much better than Lafite and Haut Brion and in the league of the 1970 Latour. I don't think that many sub-first growth wines from this vintage stand a chance at delivering this experience today. DRINK! (4135 views)
Tasted by vindictive on 1/10/2016: another great bottle, years of life ahead. Needs 1-2 hours decanting. Excellent (3775 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/30/2015: This is smoother and more expansive than the 1967 Vieux Château Certan Pomerol that Stuart opened prior, with a fleshier palate showing smooth brown fruit and carob notes. There is more substance here than the '67. But I'm not blown away. Stuart's apartment, Brooklyn. (2301 views)
Tasted by salil on 5/5/2015 & rated 93 points: Leo's Blind Tasting Group - May '15 edition (The Kitchen at Grove): This is drinking beautifully right now. Gentle red fruited flavours that still come across very fresh, augmented by an array of developed smoky, tarry, dried tobacco, leathery and dusty flavours, all coming together very seamlessly on a medium weight frame that's very silken with the tannins resolved, and bright acids keeping it quite lively. One of my top wines of the night. (3626 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 8/28/2014 & rated 95 points: Just a stunning beauty. Very tertiary nose, with rich aromas of mossy earth, cedar, sauteed mushrooms, a bit of pencil lead, and a whiff of cassis to remind you that you've actually got Bordeaux in the glass. In texture and elegance, it's the closest to Burgundy I've ever tasted from a BDX, with a silky, weightlessness that make it such a pleasure to sip. Just the faintest hint of strawberry sap to give it a little sweetness on the lovely finish. (2870 views)
Tasted by tennis on 10/19/2013 & rated 95 points: I have a weakness for older wines, but this one is not an "old" one. You
even are advisedto decant it fot 1 - 2 hours. You will be recompensed
with depth, sound fruit and a focused treat. I doubt that any 1970
premier grand cru, except perhaps the Latour, will be as good as this
Haut Bailly: bravo.....! 95 pts. (3032 views)
Tasted by mike l. on 11/21/2012 & rated 93 points: brown wine. pencil lead nose. cranberry action for days, tons of fruit. fully integrated, no sign of heat or tannin. excellent showing and a great wine around the 100$ mark. drink now! (3387 views)
Tasted by christophee on 11/18/2012 & rated 92 points: Murky garnet, med-lite viscosity and loaded with sediment in the glass. Earthy nose of cherry, cranberry, plum, stewed strawberry, mint, mushroom, olive and graphite. Medium body and thoroughly integrated with stewed fruit (cherry, cranberry, strawberry, plum), cherry skin, mint, mushroom, sweet tobacco and earth on the palate. Medium finish. A real treat. (3174 views)
Tasted by vindictive on 9/23/2012: Bottle and fill good. Capsule corroded, cork fungated on top, but extracted intact. This is a fine wine that needs some time to unwind in the decanter. The nose seemed a bit like a St. Estephe with cedar, earth, blackberry/cherry, mint. Just a touch of the hard 1970 edge, but this fades with air and is absorbed by prime rib, horseradish and autumn squash. Still strong after 3 hours. Excellent claret and years of life for well-stored bottles. Among my favorite chateaux for long-lived wines. (3155 views)
Tasted by Old Claret on 6/24/2012 & rated 96 points: Elegant, delicate, absolutely delicious! (2762 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 5/22/2012: (home tasting) Cork came out in pieces and the wine long gone downhill....Oxidation in early stages... (2396 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 2/20/2009 & rated 92 points: Chateau Haut Bailly vertical 1929 to 2005 (Institute of Directors, London): Spicy, cedary, tangy, animal scents too, light and very fresh - really enticing, lovely (3805 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
