Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 4/3/2024: At a trade tasting with Nenin, Clos Marquis & Leoville las Cases, red fruits, dusty, minerals, soft & elegant in the mouth, in a lovely spot now (216 views)
Tasted by Rugan on 5/14/2023 & rated 88 points: Ok wine however a bit tired. Some structure, reasonably balanced but nothing stands out, short finish. I think it was probably better a few years ago. (569 views)
Tasted by Rugan on 4/11/2023 & rated 87 points: Clearly over the top. Unstructured and little fruit or tannins left. (629 views)
Tasted by ZaphodB on 2/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby red with red brim. Pleasant mature nose with nice fruit and notes of black currants, plums, leather and fresh tobacco. Mouthfeel is enjoyable, mature, with fine-grained tannins, nice acidity and notes of black currants, plums, leather and just a touch of tobacco.

Very classic Médoc here, with all the right attributes in the right place. Drinks beautifully now, and will probably do so for ten years more. (703 views)
Tasted by Schönibert on 12/30/2022: 8 Jahre später braucht der immer noch ne Stunde um sich zu präsentieren. Kommt sehr gut rüber, eher fetter Medoc, zu Steak Frites absolut angebracht. (762 views)
Tasted by Brett Pitt on 6/25/2022 & rated 91 points: So far, 2011 showed very well (222 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 12/7/2021 & rated 89 points: Ready to drink, this is a good everyday drinker. Dark berry fruits, cedar and cocoa are prominent, and everything is well integrated. There is probably no need to decant and it should stay here for the next decade. (1414 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/8/2021 & rated 88 points: Fully ready to go, the medium-bodied wine is completely developed, showing a hint of chocolate on top of its red currants, cedar, spice, and lit cigar notes. (2629 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 6/27/2021 & rated 90 points: This is starting to show really well after previous bottles had been tight and closed. Still a vibrant colour - deep burgundy with distinct purple still.
Bright blackberry and some red fruit on the nose, vibrant; a hint of polished leather.
Big mixed fruits with lovely structure holding it all together in the background. Blackberry is dominant. Polished tannins. There is a lot going on here and it has a lot still to give. (1162 views)
Tasted by fraundor on 3/31/2021 & rated 91 points: - Garnet color - viel runder als 2010 (1211 views)
Tasted by tmagsmaken on 4/21/2020 & rated 89 points: A promising start with a nose filled with ripe dark fruit (blackcurrant), chocolate, cedar, mint and vanilla.
A dry medium-bodied wine, relatively high acidity and tannins. The fruit is juicy and the wine has a decent finish although alcohol and tannins create slightly bitter aftertaste. This small imbalance and a lack of refinement prevent a higher score. However, this is very nice and good value for money. (1706 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 2/1/2020 & rated 88 points: Smoky black fruits on the nose - blackberries and blueberries. A little dusty to taste, but with prominent black fruit. It's becoming extremely dry, while still showing sweet fruit. Possibly some tobacco. A little time left? (1234 views)
Tasted by eboracum on 1/14/2020 & rated 91 points: This is a sturdy claret from a Merlot (>50%) dominated blend. Good deep red colour. The first whiff at the neck of the opened bottle showed a lot of vanilla and cedar but after about 40 minutes in a decanter this was beautifully integrated into plum infused fruit. The medium/full bodied palate gave a savoury complexion to the fruit and there was good depth, generosity, smooth texture, fresh acidity and a firm ripely tannic finish. Not the most refined or fragrant Médoc but very satisfying. Very good. (1339 views)
Tasted by racerchris on 2/14/2019 & rated 89 points: Well balanced fruit and acidity with light oak presence. Smooth tannins.
In a great place now.
Very nice. (2032 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 10/7/2018 & rated 87 points: From memory, at a business luncheon in Paris. This had decent fruit aromas and hints of spiciness, a fairly flat, medium-weight body, decent acidity and well-integrated tannins. I don't see this developing further, but then I am not enough of a Bordeaux drinker to really know. A pleasant but underwhelming wine. I would like to try another bottle under better conditions. (2019 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 2/24/2018 & rated 87 points: Mixed spices on the nose, including some aniseed - and surprisingly dill; a caramel note too with blackcurrant and blackberry; a touch of mint. Very dry, slightly nutty taste. No sweetness at all. Astringent. Could it be closed or this the end of the road? (2024 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 2/18/2018 & rated 90 points: From a magnum, a well made Bordeaux in a difficult vintage, open even with a short 30min decant, quaffable

Tasted by Keith Clark on 6/23/2017 & rated 86 points: NB: Poor taste because of heavy cold and infection. Good, medium-bodied ruby. Aromas of stewed black fruits with a little wood resin and a touch of tobacco. Some eucalyptus. Something seemed awry on the nose, but not sure what. Soft, almost flat texture. Slightly sour black fruits, with a little red in the mix. Curiously flat - suggesting this bottle may have been slightly wrong with this bottle. Or was it my cold? Not a lot of structure or tannin apparent. (1272 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 4/2/2017 & rated 89 points: No detailed note. Drinking well. Tannins becoming more integrated than previously. Good berry flavours and some sour fruit - maybe a little liquorice. Some time left, but probably not that long. Either that, or it shouldn't be approached for another ten years. (1087 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 7/16/2016 & rated 88 points: Deep garnet, with some good purple; deep core. On the nose, blueberries, cherries and a little red fruit; slightly dry and dusty -almost sawdust-like. Perhaps a hint of liquorice too. Bramble fruits, blueberries and liquorice to taste. Some tannins, but uncertain whether these are enough to give the structure needed for much more improvement. Sour and peppery finish. (649 views)
Tasted by s.shah on 1/7/2016 & rated 88 points: Dark red with a crimson rim in the glass. Cherries and dark berries with a hints of vanilla, sweet spice (cinnamon, clove), and menthol on the nose. Tart in the mouth. Rounded tannins and a lingering finish. Definitely a smooth drinking traditional Bordeaux. Better to decant as the wine does take some time in the glass to open up. (3390 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 12/28/2015 & rated 90 points: I think this is getting better with a little time. A dark, velvety burgundy colour with a good tinge of purple. Brooding nose: plums and black fruits, especially blackcurrant - good fruit; a more sour, peppery back of nose and a revealing hint of red berry fruit at the end. Dry, sour fruits with an acidic hit in the mouth gives way to juicy damsons and blueberries - and perhaps barberries? Big but retained tannins. (752 views)
Tasted by Keith Clark on 11/3/2015 & rated 89 points: Thick, velvety dark purple; colour all the way through. Nose of brooding black fruits with a hint of redcurrant and a little liquorice; an earthy note too. Intense but still austere taste. Sharp blackberries, some good acidity. Tight structure. Needs time, but bursting to blossom. (711 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Médoc

Appellation Webpage (Conseil des Vins du Médoc)

The land with the Médoc appellation links three kinds of Médoc terroirs: Garonne gravel, Pyrenees gravel and soils of clayey limestone. Taking account of the huge area the appellation covers, these terroirs are extremely varied in character. Thanks to this variety of terroirs, the infinite palette of the wines with the Médoc appellation has distinction, roundness and a balanced personality. They may be full bodied with a fine ruby red colour. They should be kept a long time for their many nuances to develop. Others are elegant, subtle, with a fine bouquet, ready to be drunk younger, though this in no way reflects on their exemplary finesse. In order to have the right to the Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must: - come from the peninsula bounded on the east by the Garonne and the Gironde, on the south by Blanquefort Brook, on the west by the Atlantic Ocean but excluding the communes of Carcans and Hourtin, Brach, Salaunes, Lacanau, Le Temple, Le Porge and "land of recent alluvium and sand lying on impermeable subsoils", - satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (170 grammes - 6 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°) base yield (50 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot
Soil: Alluvial terraces of gravel deposits, light, good for Cabernet, and deep and clay-like, good for Merlot
Surface Area: 5,522 ha
