Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MikeBiker on 1/28/2024 & rated 87 points: In typical years, I would expect a more tannic wine where the 2011 was lacking. The 2011 is much lighter in mouth feel with minimal length on the palette. In the glass, legs were hardly noticeable. This was my last of 6 bottles bought on release and over this time, it has not improved over the years from the first bottle I tried 10 years ago. (506 views)
Tasted by Double-A on 11/29/2023 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet colour. Rounded, evolving fruit nose with dried berry, toast, marmite, and earth aromas. Medium-bodied with good flavours and replays; savoury, desiccated finish.
4/5 (653 views)
Tasted by fussyeater on 4/25/2023: Quite bright red with a meaty gamey leathery and tobacco suffused nose and seems a little tertiary. Wine is medium bodied showing more tobacco and red fruit notes. It glides down the throat nicely and is a classical claret that is well balanced and with well judged acidity and commensurate freshness. Tasted at the Chateau on an organised visit. (872 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 3/26/2023 & rated 91 points: A clean gruaud that shows very young and lacking development. I don’t see anything highly exciting about drinking this now and will put the next bottle on reserve for at least 5 years. There’s some chocolate starting to form in the nose and the finish showed very fresh and substantial, yet undeveloped. HOLD (1685 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 10/7/2022 & rated 89 points: Amazing how much improved a wine can be when served at the right temperature with the correct decanting time, I could finally enjoy this Gruaud Larose unlike my last experience when it felt simply like a chocolate wine!

Nose opens up to redfruit and some herbs, and then ripe plum on the palate with a tobacco finish too. Soft tannins were well rounded.

59% CS, 28% Mer, 13% CF with no PV.

I always have a soft spot for "St Julien" appelation as its my namesake, glad this wine has redeemed itself in my eyes!

Tasted by englishman's claret on 10/1/2019 & rated 92 points: Yes, this is less plush than the 2012 alongside, but the 2011 Gruaud Larose shows a complex nose full of redcurrant, ash, oak, rose, pencil, and Provencal herb. Fine silhouette despite its wooly tannins. Quite classic, actually. (5256 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/17/2016 & rated 80 points: MW Institute 2011 Bordeaux Tasting: Vegetable, tobacco, herbs and undergrowth. The palate is just all over the place, the fruit is clearly under ripe and the oak tannins are much too assertive for the level of fruit. Very poor showing. (9672 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 1/20/2016 flawed bottle: Institute of Masters of Wine - 2011 Bdx Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): Reduced, with burnt popcorn on the nose (oak? malolactic issues? yeast selection?).
The palate is clearly extracted and has the silky integration of the other top St. Juliens. (10225 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/3/2015 & rated 91 points: The Institute of Masters of Wine Annual Bordeaux Tasting - 2011 Vintage (Vintners Hall, London): A pretty solid and harmonious wine. Good balance of ripeness and freshness (something most wines did not have ) elegant and very nice to see GL continue to make solid old school wines. One to own. (91) (10588 views)
Tasted by LWI on 1/31/2015 & rated 91 points: Château Gruaud-Larose 1928 - 2011: Full bodied, modest tanning (but some may be hidden beneath the big fruit), some minerals. Hedonistic, easy drinking. Difficult to foresee its future. (10201 views)
Tasted by CManthei on 11/14/2014 & rated 93 points: Outstanding nose of coffee, chocolate, minerals, flint and blueberry jam. Fruity and well-balanced with mineralogy and acidity. The finish is a bit lacking, as is complexity in the mid-palate... but it's layered, interesting, and has the tannins to see it through to interesting places. (8904 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/13/2014 & rated 92 points: Again very nice. Really quite oaky with mocha notes on the nose, but great richness and concentration, juicy, complex, long. Lovely fruit. Needs a couple of years. 91-92+ (5393 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 9/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Nose of leather and wild poultry... taste of sappy red fruit, tannins present, lacking a bit lenght (4902 views)
Tasted by yvesbaeten on 8/26/2014 & rated 88 points: Pas encore fondu, tres charnu

Tasted by AllRed on 7/13/2014 & rated 93 points: Second Sunday Group: 2011 Bordeaux & others (Mike's): Aromas of dark fruit, earthy forest floor and violets. Another pretty bouquet, perfumed and elegant. Medium- to full-bodied with flavors of blackberries and dark fruit with an underlying earthy quality. Again, the tannins are firm but have a certain softness that makes them seem approachable- there's certainly plenty of fruit to support them. Good acidity with a long, elegant earth & violet-tinged finish. 93+ pts.

Hard to pick between this and wine E, but I guess I slightly preferred the little bit of red fruit in E to the darker fruit here. I would certainly be very happy to have either, though both would be better.

My #2, Domino's #1 (I suppose I probably should have both, eh?)
Group #2, 42 pts (4085 views)
Tasted by Tao on 5/27/2014 & rated 89 points: Tasted at Vinexpo Asia 2014

Smoky leathery nose, beautiful! However thin on the palate and a touch flabby! (3092 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/17/2014 & rated 92 points: I was quite impressed by this. Wonderful dark fruit on the nose, oak, well balanced on the palate, grippy, fresh, with ripe and round tannins. Nice minerality in the finish. 91-93+ (3247 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 2/28/2014 & rated 89 points: Wonderful leathery nose, hints of plums and red fruit. Already approachable now and easy drinking. The wine is lacking power, lenghth and power. Ok in the perspective of 2011, but disappointing for Gruaud Larose. Better spend an extra USD20 and get the 2010. (3167 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/16/2014 & rated 89 points: Medium bodied and a little short, but the earthy black and red fruits and soft and clean. The wine finishes with tobacco, herbs, cassis and blackberry. The wine was made from a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc. (3263 views)
Tasted by Mad Dog Mikey on 2/3/2014 & rated 91 points: Obviously still in its infancy. Complex Bordeaux packed with cassis ..good length. Tested alongside Lagrange and Domaine de Chevalier of the same vintage ..and this was clearly the best one. (2808 views)
Tasted by thi nguyen on 1/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit . Tasted dry plum nice finish still need more time (2539 views)
Tasted by yofog on 1/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Very classic Gruaud here, if not super powerful. This is loaded with cassis and coffee, though a little on the oaky side for me...but it's not weighed down nor is it too tannic on the palate. Should age glacially and make good drinking pretty much all the way. (2713 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 1/26/2014 & rated 90 points: 2011 Union des Grands Crus Tasting (Bentley Reserve, San Francisco CA): Lovely, classic Gruaud Larose nose (A-). Palate is quite tannic right now, but has potential (B+/B++). (3131 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
