| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by englishman's claret on 10/19/2023 & rated 96 points: This bottle of the 1947 Haut Brion is amazingly different from the last; if the last was dilute and lacking in definition, this bottle showed the inverse with an over-ripe personality and vivid definition. The nose is replete with slightly dried black cherry, ink, pipe tobacco, mineral, and chestnut. Sapid palate; weight and length without any heat or noticeable volatility. While the 1947 may be an atypical Haut Brion, it conveys the story of the year's Merlot and provides great pleasure. I didn't see a lot of evolution in the glass. It would be nice to revisit this. (2109 views) | | Tasted by LB88 on 10/20/2020 & rated 95 points: WOTN! Such a pleasure to drink this currently my oldest Bordeaux wine I ve had and what a incredible bottle. Fresher than a 50 latour and a 52 margaux just perfect from the time we popped the cork. Cork came out as one perfect piece with the vintage confirmed. Beautiful sois bois nose. Gorgeous well integrated fruit and tannins. Tobacco damp earth and dark fruits well integrated into a perfect elixir. Thank u VO (2293 views) | | Tasted by TBean on 8/25/2016 & rated 93 points: Second bottle, the first bottle was ruined by VA(probably due to storage condition, cork was not fully intact. Pop the cork and pour to low shoulder length then recork. Stood for 5 days and taste.)
This second bottle is much better. Prunes, Spice, slight sour, stew red fruit and soy. Dark and almost opaque in bottle. Lotsa sediment. (5624 views) | | Tasted by EndreS on 9/11/2014: Chateau Haut-Brion Vertical (Litteraturhuset, Oslo): This was a completely different animal than the '45. Sweet sour nose of powerful red fruits at first, leaning towards plums. After a while the nose is all prunes. Very rich and fruity in the mouth, with a still solid grip from the tannins. Some spice comes into play in a very long finish. Hedonistic pleasure. (7510 views) | | Tasted by LWI on 9/11/2014 & rated 96 points: Haut Brion Tasting 1918-1999 (Oslo): The darkest of the 40s, short and brown rim. Some prunes on the nose, but also minerals; big viscosity, and some prunes in the mouth as well, big body - but at the same time it is a very fresh wine - strangely enough, noticeable tannins in the finish, complex, a slight burned note that tempers the over all impression somewhat. (7798 views) | | Tasted by Zweder on 4/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Beautiful and complex bouquet with soft spices, chocolate and barnyard. On the palate still full bodied and complex, soft tannin, good acidity and bitterness as well as some sweetness. Although the wine is past its peak, it still has some bite. What a great wine this must have been. Usually I don't score wines which are past their peak, but in this case I scored 92 (Without knowing what it was.) (5581 views) | | Tasted by Peter Z. on 4/6/2013 & rated 93 points: in decline, but still giving pleasure. Van der Meulen bottling (1346 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/14/2009 & rated 93 points: Magnums for Dave (Jean-Georges - New York, NY): From magnum. Impressive aromas that showed very elegant mushroom character. Really charming flavors and spice, with a slightly muddled finish. (7892 views) |
| Château Haut-Brion Producer website - Read more about Chateau Haut BrionRed Bordeaux BlendRed Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.France Vins de France (Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins ) | Pages Vins, Directory of French Winegrowers | French Wine (Wikipedia)

History of Bordeaux
History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification
"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson
"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman "The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson
"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson
"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon RimmermanGraves Vins de Graves (Conseil des Vins de Graves) - Read more about Pessac Leogan Graves and its winesPessac-Léognan Pessac-Leognan reds: Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Soil: Predominantly gravel and sandy rock, with varying proportions of clay and sandstone Surface Area: 1,491 ha
