Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jreis on 9/2/2022: Mediocre vintage, fill level on the bottle was low shoulder at best. Managed to extract a very dirty fully saturated cork, so was not holding out high hopes. Nose was promising, poured a small taste, color was very bricked and pale, but taste was pleasant. Let the bottle sit open for an hour. Picked up significant darker color after opening, with a solid ruby core and some bricking on the rim. Leather, tobacco and gravel on a lovely nose with just a hint of musty earth. Blackberry fruit, granite, coffee on the palate with a hint of tannic structure in the finish. A beautiful old claret that held strong for a couple of hours before starting to fade. (1068 views)
Tasted by CWang on 11/26/2017 & rated 88 points: No formal note; fruity and mellow with berries and cherries in the nose; though still fruity with light spices on the palate, lacking some structure due to its age; medium-short finish; overall, 88-89 points. (7143 views)
Tasted by stephane on 7/19/2015 & rated 90 points: While it has certainly passed its peak there's still life in this bottle. It took a few minutes in the glass for the nose to reveal itself. Charming nose in fact and typically graves with tobacco and chocolate. The wine still shows length and a delicate texture even though a bit thin. (6212 views)
Tasted by solace on 11/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Liked this. Chestnuts, cigar box, red fruit, savoury balanced with fruit in a lovely way.
Fully mature bordeaux nose with a touch of sweetness. Ends off with a slight kiam kiam note.
Palate not matching up. Rounded fruit and oak but slightly bitter tannins at the end. Vintage issue? (8726 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 11/25/2012 & rated 88 points: Superb aromatic nose of winter melon tea , tobacco leaves, musky tea with truffles but with Limey chalky minerality. Nice cooling palate finish. Still showig good acidity snd better length than the 73 latour (8650 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 11/24/2012 & rated 92 points: The ULD (Ultimate Label Drinker's) Dinner (Imperial Treasure, Asia Square): This was quite delightful. Obviously not the best Haut-Brion, but it was very impressive for a weaker vintage, especially when compared to the lackluster 1973 Latour on the same flight. In contrast to the rather leafier Pauillac, this had a beautifully full nose, with sweet cherries and plums and cassis wreathed with lovely wafts of tobacco, spice and a little layer of milk chocolate aromas. It was delicious on the palate too. Neither the most powerful nor opulent, where this excelled was with its beautiful balance and wonderfully integrated feel, with velvety tannins and fresh acidity running through plushly delicious flavours of plums, black cherries and cassis touched with earth, truffles and chocolate. Drinking beautifully I thought. It finished well too, with cool flavours of menthol, orange peel and hints of tobacco seasoning the more dark fruited notes. Delicious stuff, nothing mindblowing, but a real pleasure. (9137 views)
Tasted by heimbach on 1/11/2012 & rated 89 points: Drunk 1/11/12. Cork disintegrated but no sediment. Opened over an hour. Still reddish edges, some fruit remains. good time to drink, even though this 'poor vintage is now 14 years past recommended drinking age. (6625 views)
Tasted by farmerjim on 6/6/2010 & rated 92 points: a magnum, on millenium night:this was supposed to be a poor year for HB with hail damage, whatever, real breeding, taut elegance of high tensile wire.
(cost a fiver in1978 from off licence,Arthur Cooper? by the roundabout top of Headington) (4710 views)
Tasted by Nicky WLS on 5/16/2010 & rated 86 points: Light red brown color less fruit herbs more acidity old but enjoy. (2636 views)
Tasted by j45 on 3/29/2010: Ridiculously great for such an "off" vintage. Classic H-B notes of leather, gravel and cedary/tobacco cigar box. The wine is lively, brisk and a joy to drink! (2647 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
