Tasted by AWBryce on 2/25/2015 & rated 86 points: Simple nose of raspberries and orange peel. Palate is acidic, very fine tannins showcase the bright red fruit. Nice. (3114 views)
 Tasted by jugar2ma on 4/24/2014 & rated 80 points: Ok (3780 views)
 Tasted by redbrix on 9/29/2013 & rated 80 points: Decent pizza/pasta wine. 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet s., 5% merlot . (4359 views)
Tasted by bconly on 5/28/2013 & rated 88 points: Good value. Went very well with spicy sausage pasta (olive oil, no tomato). It needs time with air! Don't pop n' pour. Better on night 2. (4994 views)
Tasted by Mike Kopanski on 3/23/2013 & rated 87 points: Saturday Tasting at The Gourmet Shop, Columbia, SC 3/23/2013 (The Gourmet Shop, Columbia, SC): This is the third vintage I have tried of this well regarded highly popular Sangiovese blend. To me, by far, the 2006 was the most concentrated and complete. This 2008 is not as rich. There is still plenty to like. There is a delightful aroma and flavor of fresh crushed Mount Morency sour cherry that fills the nose and continues on to coat the palate. Only medium bodied. The nose also exhibits some barnyard aromas along with the smell of roses. The cherry and raspberry fruit shows a quick hitting, aggressive sharpness that does not last very long. More Old World in style than fruit forward. There are several enhancing secondary flavors like cedar, red licorice, mint and wood smoke. Plenty of Italian style acidity. The finish is dominated by that sour cherry intensity that really brings some life to this wine. Wish it were a little more concentrated. (5444 views)
Tasted by Necowine on 3/17/2013 & rated 86 points: ubiquitous casual italian restaurant wine, made ubiquitous by its pleasant dryness, weight, and fruit, its lack of tartness, and its perceptible tannins. always there on the list if you don't feel like drinking anything else - it's got nothing to do on saturday night, every saturday night. (1461 views)
Tasted by goldgarf on 3/10/2013 & rated 78 points: This used to be so much better for the money. Now it's very average. Some berry and acid, but nothing to speak of. (2086 views)
Tasted by RonT on 2/24/2013 & rated 89 points: A substantial wine with heavy legs. Deep burgundy color with a very slight brown tint. Cherry dominates with coffee, plum, nice terroir and hints of licorice. Tasting the wine the plum comes forward with all the other notes receding. Some tannins and tartness but the wine is very balanced. Have drank for years and still think this one of the best values out there! (1850 views)
Tasted by Glenn92 on 2/7/2013: Blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, & Cab. Dark nose with black and raspberries, really great color
Hints of pepper. Deep taste of merlot. Great transitions with a velvet finish. (477 views)
Tasted by ey1294 on 2/5/2013 & rated 86 points: - Garnet color with slow forming legs and aromas of strawberry, prune, black pepper and tobacco. It's balanced and has flavours of raspberry, cherry and strawberry jam with a medium/full body. Leathery texture with a long finish - Leathery finish. Good everyday drinking Italian red. (1808 views)
Tasted by ey1294 on 1/15/2013 & rated 85 points: - Ruby color with fast forming legs and aromas of black pepper, tobacco, cherry and cedar. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of raspberry, cherry, tobacco and black pepper with a medium/full body. Coarse texture with a short finish - Not as good as previous Monte Antico vintages, lacking fruit. (1465 views)
Tasted by Ncshandygirl on 1/14/2013 & rated 75 points: Bought this on a whim. Disappointed i was. It was less than full flavor and the finish was not what I expected. I won't purchase again. (975 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 12/2/2012 & rated 86 points: WIML86

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Revisited 24 hours later.

Garnet to perhaps dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of berries, flowers and white pepper. Flavors of berries, raspberries and plum. Bright acidity, light to medium tannins, medium body. Drink now. (2048 views)
Tasted by tooch on 11/25/2012 & rated 84 points: Thanksgiving Week Wines; 11/22/2012-11/25/2012 (Edison, NJ): A straightforward Sangiovese-based wine. Had some brambliness underneath the mostly dark-fruited palate which I liked. Overall, a nice drink. (2608 views)
Tasted by troutstix on 11/21/2012 & rated 82 points: pretty nondescript Super Tuscan. Quaffable. (1749 views)
Tasted by FLI on 10/25/2012 & rated 84 points: Very italian, in that it was food friendly, a bit acidic, and restrained on the nose and on the palate. Not bad for an everyday dinner accompaniment. (1826 views)
Tasted by iawcc on 10/22/2012 & rated 85 points: Nice easy drinking value wine. (1752 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 10/15/2012 & rated 84 points: soft blackberry, mineral, adequate acidity; generically good (at Manzano's) (1626 views)
Tasted by Ken332 on 10/2/2012 & rated 85 points: I enjoyed this wine for what it is, a relatively straightforward, generic, pleasant Italian Tuscan wine at a good price. Will probably not buy again, but met my expectations at around $10. Light nose, good, simple fruit, relatively short length. (1649 views)
Tasted by daver852 on 9/26/2012 & rated 84 points: The popularity of this wine remains a mystery to me. Fairly light in color, scant nose, layer of red fruit over very soft tannins, no finish to speak of. This wine could be summed up nicely in a single word: bland. It's not awful, but it is just sort of a generic red wine that doesn't stand out in any meaningful way from a vast array of similar but less expensive wines. Certainly many much better "pizza wines" in this price range ($11). Grab a bottle of Primitivo or Dolcetto instead. (1670 views)
Tasted by Lelizbode on 9/14/2012 & rated 82 points: Good value. A little light on the nose but enough body to go with some bolonese (1758 views)
Tasted by erikjdavis on 7/16/2012 & rated 88 points: Excellent - Fruity, dry. (2051 views)

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
