Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 4/30/2021 & rated 88 points: The fresh florals have long since departed and been replaced by more of a sturdy earthy mineral nose with dark fruit and more of the same earthy mineral tinge on the palate. Actually a very nice food wine at this point in its development the wine finishes with a bit of an astringent streak which allows a wide range of foods/flavors to "fit right in and fill it out" (I had mine with a wood fired Margherita pizza and it worked perfectly!)  Tasted by fmginc on 8/29/2019 & rated 88 points: Good notes (459 views)
Tasted by ccrida on 5/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Big and bright dark fruit and game, barnyard blew off mostly, yum. (1125 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 6/2/2015 flawed bottle: Bottle variation on this one. The effervescence had not blown off by night #2. (2164 views)
Tasted by exsmith21 on 4/28/2015 flawed bottle: Corked (2246 views)
Tasted by candyman on 10/7/2014: HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE AS urban (2193 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 7/13/2014 & rated 90 points: Better than the last bottle. Needs about 3 hours to open up - a hint of effervescence upon opening, but this soon blows off. Leather, garrigue and barnyard on the nose. A bit of sweet plum on the palate, with a big meaty finish. Drinking well now, but should be even better in a year or two. (2303 views)
Tasted by pdxwineguy on 5/10/2014 & rated 70 points: Had some potential but the tannins were much too stringent and harsh. They didn't blow off even after three days so I am not sure they ever will. (1729 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 5/7/2014 & rated 88 points: Quite young and closed, but with air some dark berry and earthy characteristics emerge. Needs more time. (1359 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 3/4/2014 & rated 89 points: Needs to be decanted for 1+ hours as noted on the back label. Very masculine wine - meat / blackberry / tobacco on nose & palate. Medium+ body, medium acidity & decent finish. Good with food - should be better tomorrow so will post an edit if it improved. 89+ (should be 90-91 with bottle (1-2 more years) age). (1513 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 2/13/2014 & rated 89 points: Served at a party with no notes. Well received and good value. (1188 views)
 Tasted by djinc01 on 12/25/2013 & rated 91 points: Great under $20 #lirac (1043 views)
Tasted by SonomaWilliam on 10/11/2013 & rated 89 points: Deep concentrated color for 60% Grenache 40% Mourvedre, the more muscular side of these, but not overdone.

A powerful but not intimidating wine perfect for a winter night. Good balance of fruit, tannins and acidity.

aquired via Garagiste Seattle. (1615 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 5/28/2013 & rated 89 points: Inky purple, with some nice barnyard funk on the nose. Sweet red/blue fruit on the palate, but a healthy dose of acidity as well. Needs about 2-3 more years in the bottle to calm down. (1409 views)
Tasted by Atwellian on 4/19/2013 & rated 88 points: Dark clear purple. Dried fruit & tobacco nose. Vegetal with a meaty mouthfeel. Nice tannins, medium finish. (1433 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 2/9/2013 & rated 90 points: Another Saturday at Weygandt (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): Even better than the 2009, which I really enjoyed. Complex aromas of violets, sage, rosemary, and earth. Terrific concentration, but also solid acid. I like the saucy red fruit, combined with savory meat notes and a medley of spices. Seems like this could use a year or two to open up, but it's very nice now. 60% grenache and 40% mourvedre. (1931 views)
Tasted by IamNotDrinkingAny#@!%Merlot on 1/30/2013 & rated 90 points: Terrific Grenache blend... great value... excellent fruit with just enough 'Francois Funk' for me. (1525 views)
Tasted by Anthony Lombardi on 10/30/2012: 60% Grenache/ 40% Mourvedre. Pretty much pop & pour, but enjoying slowly to let it breathe. Clear, yet dark reddish violet. A tad reductive at first, but recovered quickly. The nose is alluring and shows some sweet red & blue fruit & black pepper. A big, full bodied Southern Rhone wine. This enters with Grenache typicity. Raspberry & some light herbal flavors. The Mourvedre components really take over the mid palate, loads of black pepper and a firm wall of tannins. Chewy mouthfeel. Wonderful, brooding length.

I think this is a courageous wine. I feel that due to the absence of Syrah in the blend. That would have softened this a bit and added a bit more acidity. The absence has created a muscular wine one might look for in Bandol and sacrificed some brightness which would make it more versatile with a meal. It really works though. Delicious. (2411 views)

2010 Domaine Duseigneur Lirac Antares

From Jon Rimmerman / Garagiste:

When one of the more significant names in the Southern
Rhone tells you “the 2010 Antares is fantastic, I mean really fantastic”, you drop what your
doing and take heed.
After experimenting with this cuvee in 2007 - 2009, Duseigneur has found what they’re
looking for in 2010 (which is not a surprise, considering the vintage). We offered the two
earlier releases from this winery a few weeks ago (see below for background/original offer of
Odyssee and Astrolabe) and now the Antares appears to merit a classicist’s “run don’t walk”
attention. If the Antares follows in the footsteps of its two siblings (which is what I’ve
heard), it will be among the finest price/freshness examples of the vintage...at a tariff that
makes it even easier to enjoy.
For reference, here’s the IWC review of the 2009 Antares – expect a more chiseled/classic
composure with no loss of density for the 2010: (Josh Raynolds) 60% Grenache and 20%
each Syrah/Mourvedre): Vivid ruby. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, cherry and lavender,
with a spicy overtone. Juicy and precise on the palate, with tangy red fruit flavors that put on
weight and gain sweetness with air. Clean and focused on the long, spicy finish, leaving a
gentle smoky note behind. 90pts”

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
