Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 11/20/2021: Opened a bottle last night. Cork os good consition, no leakage. Ample depot. Still vibrant ruby color. Aromas of cherry, red berry, herbs. Dry, medium(+) acidity, low tannin, medium alcohol and medium(-) body. Range of palate decreased; red fruit, cherry, some wood/dried leaves. Excitement and spirit left the bottle. Over the peak, drinkable but waning enjoyment.

Tasted by Chip & Susanne on 6/10/2015 & rated 88 points: Wine has faded but still has enough character. Should be drunk now. (4099 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 2/10/2015 & rated 87 points: Three decades of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Soft, ripe, medium accidity, medium complexity, very good for a 2003. (4988 views)
Tasted by GEDC on 11/26/2014 & rated 79 points: Nothing positive to add here, pass on this wine! (4559 views)
Tasted by Cellarunderstairs on 2/8/2014 & rated 78 points: Disappointing and this bottle past its best. Brick coloured with tinge of garnet, pale but clear and no tears formed. Pepper and raisens on the nose and palate. Dry, medium bodied and tart and no length. Acidic when swilled in mouth. Better without air! (5028 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 12/24/2013 & rated 88 points: Aerated with a Vinturi and decanted for 2 hours. Blackberry, spice and stone on the nose and palate. Medium bodied with a medium length, soft, dry finish. Fruit is fading, time to drink up. Paired with a Swedish Christmas buffet. (3551 views)
Tasted by GEDC on 11/30/2013 & rated 87 points: PNP drik now, wine is over the hill. I would pass on this wine!!!! (3401 views)
Tasted by StewartWent on 11/1/2013 & rated 87 points: Drinking ok. Soft, slight pong, obvious age on the fruit (which is fading). Some astringency to finish. (3174 views)
Tasted by saturnaisland on 10/27/2013 & rated 92 points: This wine has held up very well; I am thinking why pay 3 times as much for the CdP when this is so good? Nice rich red fruit (with hints of black fruit) with Mediterranean spice. Smooth and mellow with good acidity. Was possibly a bit more lush when younger, but the fading of the lushness is a good thing. The Mouvedre in this adds a nice base to the wine. Overall quite excellent. (2827 views)
Tasted by pcarmich on 8/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Beautiful nose full of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cherries, with just a touch of leather and cedar. The palate echoes the nose all rounded out with very fine tannins and a good bit of acidity. Great wine! (2242 views)
Tasted by beatles on 5/25/2013 & rated 90 points: This wine is mature but certainly not getting old ... quite impressive from a cdr, especially from this difficult and hot vintage. Tastes very much like a mini-Beaucastel with all your the known animal-like-barnyard characteristics, and the wine is in complete harmony showing to excessive heat. The tannins are very soft indeed. Will keep, but probably not improve - just drink and enjoy. (2357 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 5/14/2013 & rated 89 points: PnP from 55F wine fridge into a 75F room - this wine either decreased its aromatics after an hour or the higher temperatures did not agree with it.
This was a very enjoyable wine, opening with aromas of berry/red raspberry, spice, and lavender - delightful, and more like a CdP than I expected in a mature CdR (and plenty of fruit left). The tannins were well integrated. However, the complexity was minimal and the finish short and simple. My wife liked this more than I.
Overall I found this a very fun CdR which I definitely enjoyed, although it didn't have much complexity.
I would recommend drinking this wine with minimal/no decant, and I can't see this wine improving at this point, although I don't see it falling off a cliff either. (2308 views)
Tasted by StewartWent on 3/15/2013 & rated 87 points: Transforming into quite a subtle wine. Soft pongy pruney fruits and just a fraction hard to finish. Still quite pleasant but is fading. (2484 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 12/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Aerated with Vinturi and decanted for one hour. Blackberry, cherry, dried herb, cedar and vanilla on the nose. On the palate, black and red fruit combine with smooth tannins leading to a medium to long finish. Medium bodied with good complexity and balanced minerality. Paired well with a Swedish Smorgasborg. Drinking well. (2739 views)
Tasted by azzah on 7/15/2012 & rated 90 points: Deep red colour. This is a full throttle red, I suppose reflecting a hot vintage. Reminded me more of a big Aussie red than a traditional CdR. Aromas of both red and dark fruits, meats and florals. Flavours I'd red berries, blackberries, red licorice, charcuterie, and spice. A hint of toasty oak, but the fruit certainly dominates. This is ready to drink now and I can only imagine it will be down hill from here. (3525 views)
Tasted by StewartWent on 7/13/2012 & rated 88 points: Looking good for a 9 year old cdr from what I reckon can sometimes be an iffy vintage for longevity. Some blood and minerals on the nose and dried prune fruits. Flavours are similar although to be hyper critical not a heap of fruit depth. Secondary really although plenty of interest. Will look good through to 2013. (3174 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 3/22/2012: Again excellent, especially after30 mins of air. This realy shoes litle trace of the hot vintage. It does show great red fruit, black olive, herbs etc. Really good and often great value as it's so underrated. (4026 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 2/19/2012 & rated 91 points: Aerated with Vinturi and decanted for 1 hour. Deep garnet color. Blackberry, black currant, raspberry, spice, and toasted oak. Dark fruit, minerals, and soft tannins on the mid-palate; leading to a long, mineral driven, soft finish. Full bodied with good acidity. I really enjoyed this bottle paired with chicken provençal. (3762 views)
(3725 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 12/26/2011 & rated 88 points: 1.5 hour decant. Deep ruby color. Nose of cherries, plums, barnyard, cassis, black pepper, toasted oak, and wet stone. Medium-to-full bodied. Nice red fruit and soft tannins on the mid-palate. Medium length, soft, dry, finish. Paired well with a Swedish buffet. (3560 views)
Tasted by oakland.cory on 10/29/2011 & rated 85 points: Coudoulet Retrospective: Big, bretty nose. Dense, plummy, and aged. Barnyard. Very soft structure. (4128 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

Coudoulet de Beaucastel

__Coudoulet de Beaucastel Red__

Château de Beaucastel is located five kilometres south-east of Orange at the northern limit of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. The 30 hectares Coudoulet de Beaucastel vineyard lies just to the east of Beaucastel on the other side of the A7 autoroute. For reasons that will become evident, it is often referred to as a baby Beaucastel. When one looks at the geology of the soil at Coudoulet, the similarities with the soil at Beaucastel are legion. It is composed of a layer of marine limestone from the Miocene period, covered by a deposit of alpine diluvium. This blanket of rounded stones (or "galets") contributes much to the wines of Beaucastel: they retain the intense heat of the Mediterranean sun during the day then slowly disperse it to the vines during the night. They provide a head start to the vines in springtime. During the long Mediterranean summer, lack of water can stress the vineyard at times.

However, the resistance built into Beaucastel's vine stock from 30 years of continuous organic culture allows the vineyard to come through periods of drought with few problems. Because the soil is porous and aerated, the vineyards at Beaucastel have developed root systems that penetrate deep into the earth in their search for water.

Coudoulet, as Beaucastel, owes its ability to age to the high proportion of Mourvedre - about 30% - that makes up the final cuvée. This provides a tannic backbone and resistance to oxidation that ensures long life. In addition, Mourvedre introduces aromas of leather, tobacco, and spice to the blend. One should note also that the Beaucastel and Coudoulet vineyards are at the northern limit for growing Mourvedre, and it is well known that the best expressions of any varietal come from the cooler parts of their growing areas. The other main variety, Grenache, gives Coudoulet the rounded fullness and intense fruit that is typical of Côtes du Rhône. Syrah and Cinsault represent about 20% each and bring tannins and aromatic complexity to Coudoulet.

After careful hand harvesting, the grapes are transferred to the winery. Maceration takes place in enamel tiled vats over about 12 days before the free-run wine is taken off and a light pneumatic pressing applied. Each grape variety is kept separately until after malo-lactic fermentation, when the final blend is decided. The young wine continues to mature for about six months in large oak barrels or "foudres". In March following the vintage, the wine is fined with egg whites and bottled.

__Area of production__

Côtes du Rhône, adjoining the vineyard of Château de Beaucastel between Orange and Avignon. The Coudoulet vineyard is 30 hectares / 60 acres in size.

__Geology__

Miocene marine molasses with a layer of alpine diluvium (rounded pebbles).

__Grape varieties__

Grenache 30%, Mourvèdre 30%, Syrah 20%, Cinsault 20%.

__Vinification__

Hand picked harvest and sorted grapes which are then heated briefly to 30°C / 176°F before being cooled to 20°C / 68°F. Maceration in enamel tiled vats for twelve days. The juice is then drained off the rest pressed pneumatically.

__Maturing__

The different grape varieties, which have been vinified separately, are blended together after malo-lactic fermentation and matured for six to eight months in large oak barrels. The wine is bottled after fining with egg whites.

__Tasting notes__

Colour: bright and lively, with great depth.
Nose: red fruits.
Palate: Luscious, with hints of thyme.
