Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by burgconvert on 3/22/2024 & rated 89 points: A backfilled bottle from a well known retailer and upon cutting the capsule, found a thin layer of mold / mildew on top of the cork. Nothing wrong once pulled, however. A bit of rubber funk at first and the wine seemed quite shut. Took 60-90 minutes to coax some fruit out and it was a pleasant nose. Fleeting exotic strawberry and roses. Palate however, was thin and mineral in the way that village level chambolle can be. The nose also felt like I was getting a free trial to what mugnier can actually pull off. Overall this was just really bad QPR hence why on my scale, it's a won't repurchase. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a vintage thing that's holding it back

Nose: 89-91 (it hit a high for about 5 seconds)
Palate: 89 (128 views)
Tasted by IDKDavid on 12/26/2022 & rated 96 points: Finally popped this open on Christmas day with my girlfriend and drank over 4 hours. Faded light ruby, bricking on the edges. First 30-45 minutes after opening, there was a "new sneakers" funk on the nose. After it blew off, the nose revealed beautiful raspberries, strawberries, cherries, flowers and leather. On the palate, this was light bodied and easy drinking. Stewed raspberries, tart cherries, with some tangy acidity finishing it out. Tannins were fully resolved, so it was a very light mouth feel. Like a cru Beaujolais' wiser, more refined older brother. As the wine warmed, the acidity seemed to stand out a bit more (around the 90 minute mark). Then at the 2-2.5 hour mark, the wine began to sing as all the elements started to really meld well together. Baked Cherry pie on the nose. Sour cherry, fresh raspberries, pie crust and fall baking spices on the palate. Acidity tamed and integrated perfectly. If you like light bodied wines, I can't imagine anything being much better than this. Best Burgundy I've had to date. Wow. (867 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/29/2021 & rated 92 points: Not much density, but the cherry, strawberry and raspberries are refined, pure and elegant. Sweet, floral, fresh and ready to go. (3836 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 8/5/2020: This is purely delightful stuff... essence of Chambolle really for me; pale garnet with a nose that initially has a bit of sanguine/gamy notes and then opens to reveal bright red cherry, red currant, strawberry, floral notes, crushed stone. The palate is elegance defined, walking the line with good density of flavor yet feeling weightless. Sure wish these weren't so pricey now... (2247 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 3/9/2020 & rated 93 points: So attractive and ready immediately after popping the cork. After a week of Mugnier Musignys (5 vintages?), this stood up. Thinner, less weighty but equally enjoyable. Luscious red fruit and lightest palate. 93 (2514 views)
Tasted by overkloud on 11/24/2019 & rated 93 points: Signature aroma with depth, it needed about half an hour airing in the bottle. Top quality village wine. (2428 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/26/2019: Anyone that is blowing off 2011 should taste this. What a great village wine, really from any vintage, but especially from a difficult year. This has definitely developed since my last bottle and is certainly not going to be a long ager, but it is delicious. The nose has developed a savory secondary note of game along with some forest floor, but still has beautiful red berry fruits and violet very much in evidence. The palate is balance, elegant, and has very good depth for the level and vintage. Finishes quite harmoniously. Nothing green/vegetal/underripe here. Just a lovely mid-weight Chambolle. (1779 views)
Tasted by Mazy on 1/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Un des meilleurs villages (et même 1ers crus) bus du millésime 2011 à date. Une finesse inouïe, une minéralité dominante, un Chambolle classique du domaine. Bravo! (1997 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/9/2018 & rated 88 points: Red cherry and berry with faint spice. Good textures and overall nicely bright with good length. One glass remained in the bottle overnight (recorked, on counter) and was finished the next day, at which point the wine was getting tired. (2424 views)
Tasted by Varchas on 11/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Beautiful, classic burgundy — the better side of 2011, restrained fruit and intense minerality/earth. Beautiful flavor throughout and only got better over time in the glass/bottle. (2203 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/28/2017 & rated 88 points: Open 30 minutes before serving. Red berry, cherry and cranberry from start-to-finish. Faint spice hints, very good mineral textures. Started out soft and balanced, then some faint bitter note emerged after 20 minutes in glass. Everything back in harmony after another 30-45 minutes. Best to enjoy over the next 5-8 years, so younger drinking vs most vintages. (2581 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 10/12/2017: Has some of the overt floral spice of the vintage. There's also some meaty funk and cherry fruit. It is fine and lacy in the mouth. Only moderate of weight and lean and lithe. The finish is crisp and minerally. (2467 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/8/2016 & rated 88 points: Bright red fruit aromas and flavors. Slightly, nicely tart. Spice hints. Intense mineral textures. Faint green notes started emerging after open 20-30 minutes, then softened and almost disappeared after bottle was open ~90 minutes. (3368 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/18/2016 & rated 87 points: Red cherry and cranberry with subtle spice, faint green pepper and crunchy minerality and overall textures. Good fruit picked up some weight with more air, but the slight herbaceous character also emerged more. (3955 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 12/28/2015 & rated 91 points: Solid bottle. Drinking well right now. Light and good flavors. Not a ton of nuance but some good solid pinot flavors. (3229 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 10/26/2014: Had to try one of these as my first Mugnier. Really lovely with tons of upside. The nose is quintessential Chambolle with lots of red berry fruit, floral notes, minerality that seems like liquid limestone, anise, and hints of savory. The palate is very young, yet still unbelievably elegant and delightful. Raspberry, cherry, limestone, and a nice hint of licorice on the finish. This is first class Chambolle that is classically representative of the village. Really good. (4233 views)
Tasted by Shiaxonna on 6/25/2014 & rated 89 points: Young dark pinkish pinot color. The nose is dominated by the 2011-mark which lies like a vegetal shadow over the wine. But having tasted quite a few 2011-burgs, I've come to recognize this trait as a curiosity rather than something unwelcome. The palate is soft, raw, young balance and power. This is freshly squeezed grapejuice which delivers. After a couple of hours a calm and cooling sweetness emerges to complete the picture. Wonderful, but not completely the power and punch I would have preferred.

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/16/2014 & rated 89 points: Liked this a lot at the Knightsbridge tasting a couple of weeks ago, so I decided to open a bottle and see how it evolves through an evening. The KB bottle had been open 15-20 hours when we tasted it, tonight I opened it 30 minutes before dinner. Started with lots of bright red cherry and strawberry, modest spice, very intense minerality and some rough, rugged edges. Over the course of 4 hours this softened and lengthened, flavors profile became more robust and intensely cherry, plus some more spice emerged. Also, the slight harshness completely dissipated. Last taste was the best. (3920 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/6/2014: Knightsbridge 2011 Burgundy Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. consistent when tasted a few months back, this has lots of charming, sweet red fruit and a nice floral hint. Good spice support and well structured for pleasure starting in a year or three. (4356 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/8/2013 & rated 90 points: Knightsbridge Annual Holiday Burgundy Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. Great floral start with fresh red fruit. Similar flavor profile, quite elegant and refined with moderate intensity. Give a little cellar time but best young. (4489 views)
Tasted by godx on 4/25/2013: France 2013 - Côte d'Or; 4/24/2013-4/26/2013 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Beautiful nose, pure and floral. Delicate palate, red fruited, good minerality. Great acidity. No green on the nose but a very subtle hint of green on the palate, but by no means is this wine full blown green like other 2011s I’ve tasted. This will be approachable early but still would be best to wait 5 years or so. Hopefully the hint of greenness remains subtle and/or dissipates over time. (3136 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 11/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Palais de Congres: Des Grands Vins de Bourgogne (Beaune): ***Elegant, delicate perfume, pretty floral notes; touch of black licorice, spice, and blackberry; excellent bones. 92-94. (4690 views)
Tasted by St Paul on 11/10/2012 & rated 90 points: A vibrant transparent and seductive Chambolle. Very fine with minerals and lingonberries. Very feminine and nice. Tasted from barrel. (3033 views)
Tasted by godx on 7/20/2012: France 2012 - Côte d'Or; 7/16/2012-7/21/2012 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Nice cherry fruit and violet nose with lively raspberry and cherry flavours. There’s solid acidity and the finish is moderately long and finishes clean and fresh. Really nice. (88-90). (3833 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny is one of the smallest appellations of the Côte de Nuits, although given the tiny, fragmented nature of Burgundy vineyards, it manages to fit two exceptional Grand Crus (Bonnes Mares and Le Musigny) and a couple of dozen Premieres Crus. These wines are known for delicacy and tend to be light in body, but concentrated and with fragrant bouquets. The critic Robert M. Parker Jr. quotes French poet Gaston Roupnel as likening the region's wines to "silk and lace."
