Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 19 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DMET on 6/28/2020 & rated 92 points: still alive after all these years!

-smokey and semi-fruit nose
-medium weight - lost a little but still nice
-finish a bit thin, but sweet and long. (1204 views)
Tasted by zin-fan-delaware on 12/7/2019 & rated 92 points: I decanted it two hours before serving. It was wonderful; the tannins had calmed down and it was nicely balanced. It probably is not going to get better, so I will serve the other bottles from the case for Christmas. (1293 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 7/6/2012 & rated 91 points: Opened and decanted for about 30 minutes at the restaurant. Youthful looking wine -- blood red but not purplish black color. Wasn't giving much on the nose or palate for that matter. It was rather tight. Juiicy, red plums with integrated tannins. 88 pts.

Drank the remaining bottle the following day, and the wine showed what I've had in the past. Milk chocolate, wet earth, and some floral notes on the nose and chocolate covered cherries on the palate. (4431 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 7/6/2012 & rated 90 points: this bottle was shared by Dom at a central jersey CT offline dinner held at Pairings Restaurant. see his note from 7/6. i too, found the wine to be shy but with indications that it might improve with further aeration. wish i had the opportunity to see the wine at its best. (477 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 5/18/2012 & rated 92 points: Consistent with last year's note. Just an excellent wine in a vintage that was not highly regarded. (4198 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 5/14/2011 & rated 92 points: Excellent bottle of wine. Color was ruby to opaque. Aromas of crushed cherries, warm plum compote, baseball glove leather, and wet earth. No chocolate notes this time. Good amount of fruit on the palate. Medium-bodied, silky and seemed like a mature Bordeaux. Well balanced and enjoyed by the entire table. (4618 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 4/14/2011: No real notes - it was better balanced than expected for Cakebread. Nice, very pleasant bottle of wine. (3974 views)
Tasted by CooGAR on 6/18/2010 & rated 89 points: Gave this an 89+. Just could not take to to the "Outstanding" level. Opened and let it breathe in the bottle for about an hour. Big dark fruits on the nose - esp. grape jam. Well balanced with a bit of oak and the tannins were faintly there. Meduim finish and very smooth. Drinking great right now, but I could see this having another 2-3 years in it if you want to hold onto it. (4210 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 1/29/2010 & rated 92 points: I really like this cab for the price. No tasting notes. Not as great experience from the previous bottle although the had been decanted for several hours. (2213 views)
Tasted by LZ on 10/24/2009: drank with Nader darius jimbo (2414 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 10/17/2009 & rated 94 points: G-man brought this bottle to an offline. It was one ofthe last wines of the night, and usually, my palate is pretty tired. But boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Fantastic nose that reminded me of a Cadbury milk chocolate bar. Full-bodied, opaque, dense blackish hue. On the palate, some ripe plums, cassis, and dark chocolate mixed with some fine tannins and a little acidity to keep things in check. Paired nicely with some brownie dessert. Bought 4 bottles for future consumption. (2369 views)
Tasted by tacman on 8/22/2008 & rated 89 points: time to drink the rest of my '98s ... good but won't get any better. Lacks the depth and finish that the '07 single vineyard products still seem to show. (2512 views)
Tasted by mglgs on 12/6/2007 & rated 90 points: Good bouquet and fruit, aged well. Opened up after ~20 min. Short finish though. (2824 views)
Tasted by Grinder on 9/3/2007 & rated 90 points: Dark and brooding, still a touch tannic but a real mouthfull of dark fruit, currant, and pencil lead. Very nice, but either still young or the tannins have won. (3084 views)

Cakebread Cellars

Producer website
Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born. As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
