Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hargy on 12/11/2018: not sure whether it was a bad bottle or just 'gone'? Not rated (2015 views)
Tasted by AB16 on 8/17/2018 & rated 95 points: Beautifully aged Brunello. Great fruit , earth, soft tannins with beautiful complexity and acid on finish. Loved this wine (1937 views)
Tasted by Ccasas on 1/2/2018: Well balanced (2280 views)
Tasted by jmkamil on 10/1/2016 & rated 88 points: Also noted a very tight cork. It broke during removal but both pieces stayed on the corkscrew. Very serviceable but nothing special. Color was still good: dark cherry with no oxidation. Paired with BBQ chicken. Thought it would be too high a quality wine for the meal. Maybe 2-3 years ago but now it was just right. (3292 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 8/20/2016: Don't know storage. Seems rustic and OTH. (3368 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 1/2/2016 & rated 91 points: Allowed to breathe in glass one hour before tasting. Clear deep dark garnet color. Beautiful bouquet of red and black cherries, currants, boysenberries, and their respective liqueurs. The fruit varied over the evening from dry and dusty, to jammy and roasted, then back to dusty again. Cloves, nutmeg, allspice, black pepper, mocha, forest floor, leather, cedar. Similar on the palate, full body, balanced, chalky mouth-coating tannins, long finish. Reminiscent of a nice zinfandel, but with more tannin and acidity. Held up nicely for four days in refrigerator under vacuum stopper. (2720 views)
Tasted by Spencer on 1/11/2015: Still quite tannic but the fruit seems to be holding up. Not particularly complex, but a solid Brunello. Has the stuffing to last, but I'm not sure that it's going to improve. I see a review on 6/13/09 commenting on how tight the cork was, and I noticed the same thing. Almost broke my corkscrew. (3274 views)
Tasted by rfras on 9/1/2014 & rated 89 points: Fading fast. After some decanting there is still some cherry fruit flavor but the flavor is muted and the finish has a bit of an after taste. (3211 views)
Tasted by kanjimoti on 2/5/2014 & rated 90 points: A dark saturated purple showing hints of slightly rusted red as I swirl the glass. The 99 Camigliano has a very sexy, opulent, open and generous nose of mashed ripe blackberries and raspberries, some oak, a touch of soy, iron, creosote, and clove laden orange rind. Some of those descriptors make me think I'm drinking a Rioja. While the nose is pretty the mouthfeel here is true grit with harsh tannins and high acid and screams for food with a tomato based sauce. Wow this is torture on the palate. I'd like to think the grip will soften with time and considering the amount of fruit left in this wine and the fact it's still precise, I wouldn't say it's a gamble at all to give this another five years in the bottle but a necessity. I wish the palate were as sensual as the nose. Drink 2018-2022. (2983 views)
Tasted by futronic on 12/21/2013 & rated 91 points: Poured into shoulder, slow ox'd for four hours. Opaque ruby-black colour. Aromas of crushed blackberries, black cherries, prunes, vanilla, tobacco, sottibosco, black licorice, black truffle, violets. Full-bodied, pretty dense, with more blackberry, black cherry, prune, and sottibosco notes. Moderate-length finish, ~20-25s. I'd like a little more amplitude on the palate, as it's coming off a little too one-note for my liking. Tannins are decently integrated. I'm going to hold off on remaining bottles in hopes that it becomes more expressive. Very good, but not great. 90-91 points, drink 2015-2020. (3052 views)
Tasted by Kento61 on 2/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well. Smooth, full body, excellent. (3250 views)
Tasted by Kento61 on 2/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Drinking well now. Meidum body, smooth, very good. (2793 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 9/10/2012: A surprisingly good showing. My last experience with the '01, at our '01 Tuscan horizontal in Jan. 2011, was of a soft, chocolate-y wine, resolved and more brown than red fruit, and I thought this '99 would be in that mold. Wrong. This is more deeply red/black fruited than the '01, with black cherry, red currant and blood orange notes, and shows considerable vigor and freshness, with additional notes of iron and fresh flowers and lively Sangio acidity. Something about this wine made me think of Brunello as superior to Chianti, although maybe I was momentarily swept away. It lost some strength into the finish, suggesting that this wine is at its peak. Really nice showing. (2998 views)
Tasted by BradboBaggins on 9/5/2011: Opened during a large dinner, no formal notes, but showed very well with some good life left to it. Took about 1-2 hours to hit full stride. (3129 views)
Tasted by timbrown on 8/5/2011: - Brick color and has flavours of black currant, cherry and black pepper with a medium/full body with a medium finish - Very nice nose, dark with hints of cherry and pepper (3277 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 1/30/2011 & rated 91 points: Very dark. Very nice an elegant nose, complex with cherries and spice. Very good taste, smooth and complex and a long after taste. A wine with high quality - one of the better Brunellos I have tasted. (2870 views)
Tasted by Giggs on 7/14/2009 & rated 92 points: Showing very youthfully, dark red color, wonderful nose of black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, and hints of game. Palate has surprising concentration, cherry and raspberry, with creamy vanilla toward the finish. Blast of bright acidity on the finish. Pleasant mouthfeel and balance with an average finish. The fruit is vibrant and concentrated. A good example of Brunello that has several more years in it. Drink or hold. (3853 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 6/13/2009 flawed bottle: This had the tightest cork I've ever had to remove. Took two corkscrews. Opened and decanted 45 minutes before pouring a glass. Raisins on the nose. Sharp bitter attack with no finish and getting worse. I don't know what the problem is, but it isn't pretty. (3669 views)
Tasted by dartboard on 1/31/2009 & rated 91 points: Very luxurious, I was shocked at how balanced this was throughout. Decanted for about an hour and had no problems with over-aggressive tannins. Dark cherries for the nose and cocoa and strawberries on the palate. Paired extremely well with a high-acid red sauce.

Each bottle is different, but consider drinking this soon because I think the age is just starting to show. It may be a bit past its peak for some people, which is why it is being sold at a discount some places. (3943 views)
Tasted by anevard on 11/8/2008 & rated 82 points: Something still in the nose but the mouth was acid and short. The fruit dried up. Too bad I have another bottle. (3972 views)
Tasted by blaine on 10/25/2008: Decanted for about an hour...perhaps I should have double-decanted and shaken it up a bit...but this is a 9-year-old wine. Traditional Brunello, not excited about how this is showing right now. Muted nose, tight on the palate, overall dry finish. (3848 views)
Tasted by hargy on 9/25/2008 & rated 87 points: quite closed on both the nose and the palate - does seem to be a very well made, balanced wine - should improve - leave (3814 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 7/11/2008 & rated 89 points: A touch of brick red around the rim. Initially closed and muted, Paula guessed it as a Brunello thought right away. We had tried this at a tasting in 2004 and recall it was more vibrant then. This was dry with smooth cherry notes and licorice. It did open up more after about 1 hour but was not a knockout. (3907 views)
Tasted by bflood on 6/7/2008 & rated 89 points: Initial blast of medicine gave way to dark fruity nose. Did not decant but recommended as it opened up nicely and showed off good balance of earth, mineral and fruit. Medium finish. (3916 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 4/10/2008 & rated 92 points: Delicious. Complexity from earthy foundation. Dark in color, just delicious. Had at Tom's farewell party. (4073 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
