Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by beatles on 5/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured - but this needs air. A cool, mineral feel, this is more the cuvée than vintage. Stony precision, kirsch at the core, ends dry and serious. Leave this be - or give it air before serving it with serious meat.

Tasted by tobyc on 2/18/2022 & rated 90 points: Made from 85 % grenache and 15 % syrah. Starting to show age on the brims. Very delicate nose w. dark red fruit - somewhat fleshy - and sourmilk. Rounded tannins and subdued acidity yet firm structure. Very red-fruited w. good depth, still rather primary althought tertiary notes start to appear. A little thin on the finish. Good now and I am not necessarily convinced that it will continue to improve.

Drink (maybe keep). (932 views)
Tasted by yvr2zrh on 9/26/2021 & rated 90 points: This was tough one. It seemed a little flat with the structure not so present and mostly fruit. We kept on saying it was basically Cherry Coke - - good cherry coke but still a bit of a fruit bomb. I have a lot of this and a magnum. It was not typical so perhaps just bottle variation. (1359 views)
Tasted by Lockareff on 5/27/2020 & rated 93 points: Fantastic. In a good zone now. (1528 views)
Tasted by springdrive on 1/13/2019 & rated 90 points: Very ripe fruit, baking spices and herbs. Very delicious, but seemed over-ripe and less complex compared to the 2007 (which doesn't lack intensity either). I look forward to trying other vintages. (1647 views)
Tasted by beatles on 7/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Tasted over two days. Generous, yet firm. The base is mature Grenache here, garrigue, local feel - and a certain coolness. Very young, wait a year or two for the next one.

(1854 views)
Tasted by Jean-Philippe M on 1/12/2018: Magnifique Ch9, qui a déjà une belle évolution. Le vin est éclatant en saveur, avec des tannins légers et une bonne longueur.

4/5 (1797 views)
Tasted by lmbernstein on 1/6/2018 & rated 91 points: Typical garnet coloring. Heavy legs evidence the high alcohol but the fruit and structure are well integrated. I don’t feel the heat at all. You can taste the Grenache heavy mix (85/15) to Syrah. Wonderful length in finish. Berries and spices mostly. (1362 views)
Tasted by WineDuq on 11/1/2017 & rated 90 points: Somewhat disappointed. Perhaps an off bottle? Not getting the freshness mentioned by others. This seems over-ripe actually with the red fruits being slightly baked in nature. Very pure, mulberry, minerals and sandalwood on the nose (along with over-ripe notes). Good palate presence, silky texture, medium length finish, though I did notice the alcohol heat from the 15.5% ABV. (At 15.5 it probably was harvested later rather than early). Not quite my cup of tea. (1394 views)
Tasted by Ben85 on 2/20/2017: Brilliant wine. Grenache to the fore. wild strawberries, red cherry, with provencal herbs and spice. Great concentration of pure red fruits here. Medium body, fresh not heavy. Surely will develop but very good now. (1747 views)
Tasted by kosmik on 9/30/2016 & rated 92 points: Une bête de fruit et d'épices qui demeure par ailleurs tout en équilibre, sans aspérités.
Grand plaisir maintenant et pour longtemps probablement.

Tasted by Ben85 on 12/4/2015: Bancroft Fine Wine Tasting: lovely fresh style, beautiful and enticing nose, seamless alcohol. Surprised by this and eager to taste more from this producer. If only more CNDP could be like this. None of that liquor-like nonsense. (2527 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 10/13/2015 & rated 93 points: Very animal nose, beef blood, patanegra, ripe red cherries, sandalwood... super silky ripe strawberries, quite long aftertaste, nice minerality and mature wine. (2611 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/17/2014 & rated 93 points: With freshness in its character, the ripe, red and juicy black fruits stand out with their spicy qualities and polished textures. There is no sensation of heat in the 15.5% alcohol finish. The wine was produced from a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. (3650 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 1/18/2014 & rated 94 points: Barrel sample: Powerful nose of black cherries, licorice, characoal, mineral… very ripe tannins, ripe black cherries, hint of minerality (94+/100) (2891 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 2/24/2013 & rated 94 points: Powerful nose of black fruit, licorice, mine de crayon, beautiful!! Huge concentration, light tannins, fruity, nice balance, en finesse... ripe red cherries, nice acidity, very feminine, nice salinity (3458 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
