Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 137 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bugdoced on 3/9/2024 & rated 90 points: for the most part 2011 has been disappointing
this bottle started out the same way
but after 4 days in the fridge this integrated with fruit and volcanic ash that made sense
so go figure (771 views)
Tasted by Condrieu82 on 1/20/2024 & rated 93 points: Ruby in color, intense nose of red fruits and forest floor. Nice acidity, full body, black currants, black cherries, blackberry paste, forest floor; grippy tannins, oaky ending. Very comllex and expressive, rustic. In a great spot now, but can age well for a few more years. (929 views)
Tasted by Momus99 on 12/16/2023 & rated 90 points: Didn’t take detailed notes at the time, but remember this as being a very enjoyable bottle. (1070 views)
Tasted by neiljh on 10/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Upon opening very pleased, dark fruits, charcoal and depth. Opened up over the coming 2 hours in decanter to dinner and held up beautifully through to 3 hour cheese course. Very smart wine. (1460 views)
Tasted by RussK on 10/8/2023 & rated 91 points: From the Volcanic Eruption Tasting. Not as good as the 2009. 91+ pts. (1334 views)
Tasted by foyfrcs on 8/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Still loads of primary fruit, black cherries and plums with some tar/charcoal.
This is holding up very well and I think that the RP drinking window up to 2030 is probably reasonable.
Excellent wine. (1241 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 7/31/2023 & rated 90 points: Dark purple color. After 2+ hours in decanter there is a complex nose of red cherry and tobacco. Blackberry flavors still with tannins. (1278 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 4/25/2023 & rated 89 points: Dark ruby red. Black fruit on the nose. Round, soft blackberry and plum flavors on palate and a jammy finish. (1446 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 3/5/2023 & rated 89 points: less volcanic pumice than the 2010 serpico tasted side by side
I've been disappointed by 2011 terra but in discussion maybe needs more time
a lot more time (1771 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 2/24/2023 & rated 92 points: New one for me. Blend of 80% Aglianico & 20% Piedirosso from the Campania region of Southern Italy. The volcanic soil is evident right off the bat with a nose of iron and other minerals. Nice fruit profile of blackberry and dark plums with notes of fresh herbs, black olives, black licorice, and earth. Still nice acidity and tannins with a good long finish. Interesting wine indeed. (1764 views)
Tasted by KJD45$ on 1/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Similar to last note except not disjointed…
All plums with olive notes, herbs, spices, and nice acidic finish with the toned down tannins (1768 views)
Tasted by tommggeorge@gmail.com on 12/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark, brooding aromas of plum, blackberry and soil. Slightly meaty. Reminiscent of old port or CNDP. A slightly enigmatic aroma hangs in the glass. Plasticine? Bovril? Serrano ham? I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Excellent to drink with a bit of peace and quiet and needs little else. It doesn’t have the acidity or tannin to drink with dinner but that’s not necessarily a criticism. It’s very enjoyable and worth the money. Much more interesting than a mediocre Barolo of the same price.

I like some age on a bottle, but this is ready to drink for me and I wouldn’t wait much longer. Not past 2025. Enjoy! (1786 views)
Tasted by KJD45$ on 10/30/2022 & rated 92 points: Starting to barely brown…
Nose is iodine …graphite…dark red fruit..
Rustic, plum , iodine , firm tannins…
It’s an interesting wine but somehow feels a bit disjoiinted… not sure it changes much with any more age.. (1735 views)
Tasted by wineoracle on 9/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Very dark garnet. Very strong nose of ripe black cherries, licorice, and a faint hint of pencil shavings. Dark fruit, minerality, touch of acidity, and medium tannins. (1763 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 8/27/2022 & rated 89 points: Spännande vin. Rejält med rökta komponenter, grillat kött och gylf som inte vill sig. Obalanserat, men rikt, fylligt, spännande! På ren japanska: あちこち。 (1663 views)
Tasted by byzero on 8/13/2022 & rated 92 points: DAY 1
Served with the Vinlog System
👃Purple fruit, tar & mint
👅Earthy with cassis & plum, volcanic ash & fresh tobacco. Mod complexity. Long dry finish with tannic pull

The remaining wine was Slow Decanted™ in my refrigerator

DAY 10
👃Less mint & more cooking spice vs Day 1
👅Volcanic earth and graphite with purple fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, & licorice

Drinking well as a fruit forward wine. Will improve as tannins continue to soften. Love the volcanic notes🌋 that dominate

Tasted by wgmccallum on 7/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Very dark ruby. Tar, blueberries, dry rocks on the nose. Rich dark fruit on the palate, salty, somewhat spread out and unstructured with prominent but soft tannins and a mild acid frame. Not sure where this wine is or where it is going. But perfectly pleasant with a beef short rib burrito. [Upgrading this to a 90 after tasting the remainder of a Coravine'd bottle.] (1792 views)
Tasted by Elizim on 3/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Don’t ask me; it was really good with steak. Got better after decanting. Still young. (2027 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 11/17/2021 & rated 79 points: worst wine of the night at Neat restaurant
so bad I gave the second bottle to the only person who liked it
perhaps just a bad bottle withoutt length or without elegance so who knows (2525 views)
Tasted by weezie on 11/14/2021 & rated 93 points: Truly outstanding paired with a well seasoned NY Strip and just as good on night two with lamb shank and gnocchi. This seemed even more elegant, aromatic and smooth than my last bottle a few months ago, while not losing any of the interesting cassis, tobacco or volcanic character that makes this so special. 93+ (2254 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 11/5/2021 & rated 89 points: Simply too much Oak for me to overcome, and it lost a couple points because of it. There are so many better vintages of this wine. (2279 views)
Tasted by Momus99 on 10/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Similar to WGMcALUM’s note. Really singing at the moment, more so than even a year ago. Ten years may be the right amount of age for this impressive cuvée. (2282 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 10/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark berries, ash and rock, cinnamon and espresso on the nose. On the palate, deep dark plum fruit, salty with an inviting acid frame, tannic and sweetly aromatic moving into the very long finish. 93 (2001 views)
Tasted by stefad on 10/16/2021: Délicieuse cuvée de Campanie, tanins encore perceptibles. 92/100 (1636 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 8/1/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark ruby with garnet bricking. Pronounced aromas of black fruit lilac, tar, and crushed rock. Deep concentrated prune fruit with a generous warm acid frame and firm integrated tannins. Lovely progression into a long aromatic finish. (1901 views)

Fattoria Galardi

Producer website
Fattoria Galardi

This winery is run by an enthusiastic group of dedicated cousins, Maria Luisa Murena, Arturo and Dora Celentano, and Francesco Catello.
The estate is firmly committed to making wine of the highest quality and has reaffirmed this commitment by hiring the distinguished oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella
who shares their philosophy. Together they strive to maximize the intrinsic characteristics of the native grapes Aglianico and Piedirosso through attentive and careful vineyard management.
The winery and surrounding hillside vineyards are located at approximately 1,300 feet above sea level and benefit of ideal growing conditions, such as climate and exposure.
The name of their praised icon wine Terra di Lavoro or “Land of Work” in Italian, reflects the soil composition in the area which is extremely rocky, thus difficult to cultivate.
Yields and overall volume are very low; only a few thousand bottles are produced each year although the winery will have almost 30 acres under production in the future.
The owners and Cotarella decided to focus on the native varietals Aglianico and Piedirosso.

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
