Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Periko on 11/28/2022 & rated 90 points: In a great spot. Similar to prior bottles, dark fruit, savory and rounded, nice acidity, alcohol in check. Delicious. 90-91 (244 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 1/5/2021: PnP. Dark fruit, good deep flavor. Very slight fermentation, but not off putting and my wife did not even notice it and she usually comments on everything. I think I tasted it because I knew it was a possibly. (577 views)
Tasted by fingers on 12/12/2020 & rated 89 points: This bottle was a bit tired, even heading downhill compared to priors. Another half-soaked cork may have had something to do with that, but I sensed a loss of persistence and fruit that seems to be fading out the longer it was open. The bouquet is still very nice and this bottle still has enough charm to be worthy of the reasonable investment, but I think all these 2013’s are as ready as they’ll ever be.

Tasted by Periko on 4/19/2020 & rated 91 points: Very nice dark fruit, some mineral notes/pencil lead and feeling fresh. Definitely a tremendous improvement over the blend bottling, which after straight 3 bottles, certainly has a 2nd fermentation problem. The Rutherford, however, is a joy to drink, especially with food. (659 views)
Tasted by fingers on 3/23/2020 & rated 92 points: Well, this cork was in perfect shape compared to the prior bottles. Very dark ruby color with no sediment. Profound nose of ripe blackberry, cassis, peppermint, tobacco, and nice flora's. Followed over two days open and by the second day the palate had settled in to a very nice place. This was tasted on the heels of a 2012 CTBP Rutherford and it shows a lot younger than the one year difference would suggest. In general this is riper and a little more extracted. Bold and delicious. Great for pizza.
Happy to have three more to spread out over the next 5 years or so.

Tasted by fingers on 10/19/2019 & rated 90 points: Another 2013 CTBP and another compromised closure. I noticed a few drops seeping from the capsule as it laid sideways in the cellar and the cork turned out to be fully saturated.
Nicely perfumed bouquet after 30 minutes or so open. The palate also needed some time to lose what I think may have been the tiniest bit of secondary fermentaion going on, but it ended up being quite easy to drink and a true crowd-pleaser. With the failure rate for me so far on these '13 closures, I won't be hesitant to drink them over a shorter term.

Tasted by fingers on 7/28/2019 & rated 91 points: I found this to be more restrained and better composed than the 2013 blend that I had last night. Did not notice much change over the 4 hours open so I think it’s a good pop n pour now and should hold up well for a few more years, at least. This cork was also half-saturated, much like the bottle the day before. 4+12+17+8= 91 (848 views)
Tasted by Apark101 on 7/16/2017 & rated 93 points: Drinking nicely even with limited decant. Aerated and enjoyed first glass with some ribeyes. Bright and explosive flavor with notes of violets, raspberries, and cedar with a light smokey undertone. Digging this one for sure. Medium finish. The tannins still need to chill out quite a bit, although having a second pour now and happily enjoying. Will probably wait a few months to open another. (1422 views)
Tasted by BornToRhone on 3/11/2017 & rated 93 points: 750ml; PnP and followed over about 2 hours. To me, this wine rocked - it was a plethora of bright red fruits, tannins well integrated, decent acidity - if blind I would have guessed this to be an $80+ wine in its prime drinking window. Next bottle could be different but I recommend you try one. Had with a NY Strip steak. Yummy. (1117 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/28/2016: Drank this next to the Spring Mountain from the same year and I have to say I preferred the Spring. The Rutherford was much more bright and almost chewy fruit. Even though I thought the spring fruit was on the sweeter side as well, this is another level beyond. (1138 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
