Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 68 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bellissimo on 11/24/2022: Last of a case purchased back on release. Holding up very well. Served with traditional Thanksgiving meal. Brambly red fruit and black pepper. Still light on its feet with great balance. Always a treat and over delivers. (510 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 6/10/2022: Give this some air, and the fruit will shine. It is elegant in a Pinot Noir way with berries, florals, and licorice. Blind, you will never call it Zinfandel. It has acidity that will have you thinking Tuscany and the reason it was perfect with our pizza. (624 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 4/15/2022 & rated 89 points: Perplexing... similar to my 7/20/2021 TN. Slightly orange rim, lighter in style. Some sweet raspberries on the nose. Fruit seemed a bit dry with a spicy character. Medium finish. Tasted a decade older than 2012...
Interestingly, none of the seven other blind tasters identified this as Zin - guesses ranged from older Barolo to Chianti Classic Res.... (593 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 11/25/2021 & rated 91 points: Thanksgiving Dinner with the B Family (Their House): Slo-oxed for 30 minutes with some sediment. Red fruit and spice on the nose. These carry over to the medium bodied palate along with a modest earthy component and balancing acidity. Enjoyed with the main course for Thanksgiving dinner. This wine should easily make the decade mark. (751 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 8/7/2021 & rated 92 points: A totally different wine! Still has a lighter color with a touch of brown at the edge, with nice dried cherries and a bit of earth on the nose. On the palate this bottle exploded with brambleberry and raspberries. Fairly deep albeit still medium bodied, this harkened back to older Ridge Zins that I've loved. Can't wait for the next bottle! (823 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 7/20/2021 & rated 88 points: Decanted 30 minutes as recommended by other tasters. A very light version of Zin, especially considering these are "old vines". Somewhat muted nose, dried raspberries, but somewhat hollow mid-palate. I get the elegance, no question, but there was something lacking in terms of depth... Look forward to trying this again in the near future. (518 views)
Tasted by OenoEd on 4/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Well stored bottle since release. Needs 30 minutes of air to blow off a bit of sulfur. Metallic cherries, tea, and milk chocolate in the nose. Like all of Fred’s wines, this is beautifully balanced, medium weight and concentration, and finishes after 30 seconds with elegant peppery acidity. This will drink well for 15 years, and is a few years away from dropping sweet fruit, allowing briary complexity, cocoa, and herbs to blossom. Wont surprise me if this gains a point or two by 2024, although tonight it makes me miss his brilliant 2011. Fine tonight w pan seared pork chops and mushrooms. (636 views)
Tasted by Max S. on 1/27/2021 & rated 91 points: Better second time around, more fruit and less tea PnP. (574 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 12/18/2020: The nose is a beautiful cherry compote. Palate is floral, cherries, licorice, black pepper, lots of acidity. Hides the alcohol well. Another Scherrer I describe as new world that drinks like old world. (488 views)
Tasted by Max S. on 11/14/2020 & rated 91 points: Strong tea notes to start, overwhelming the fruit. After 1-2 hours it came together. Should've saved some for days 2+3. (420 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 6/6/2020: Always impressed with Fred's take on Zinfandel. Not jammy or brambly, this shows a lighter, red fruit focused wine with pleasant acids and soft tannins that finishes like an Earl Grey tea. (588 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 3/29/2019 & rated 91 points: Night 1: Fruit forward, somewhat disjointed, not the most pleasant OMV.
Night 2: Really comes together, more elegant, acidity shines, fruit is more focused and less candied. My guess is this wine is in a weird stage at present and just needs a year or two more of cellar time. (979 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 3/21/2019: Served blind. Lots of berry, creamy and I perceived this as sweet, candied. Didn't present with much structure. My advice is to drink this cool and drink now, for what it's worth. (1522 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 2/23/2019: Still holding consistent with previous notes. Lighter side of a Zinfandel which I rind unique and adore. (971 views)
Tasted by RichEB1 on 9/2/2018 & rated 89 points: Was in the mood for a restrained, red-fruited zin so I popped this youngster and got pretty much what I expected. A bit shy on the nose upon PnP but opened up nicely after just a little bit of air with cherries and cinnamon. Still seemed very young on the palate with under-ripe raspberries, and lots of acidity. A pleasant wine but lots of room for improvement. If you have any, I'd suggest holding for a handful of years. (1226 views)
Tasted by InVinjeVeritas on 5/28/2018 & rated 87 points: Ok, balanced zin, but not worth 300 NOK. (1468 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 1/15/2018 & rated 96 points: Wow. This wine is in the zone. Everything is complete and balanced. The aromatics are so enticing. Raspberries, cherries and a little bit of boysenberry syrup. There are also earthy and graphite elements. Medium bodied and medium acidity. Tannins hold it all together. Had over 2 nights. Not much change. Nothing tells me this wine will fade anytime soon but I would say drink now and enjoy what Zin can be. (1582 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 1/13/2018: The best old world new world wine. Dark fruit layered with bramble, licorice, black pepper, and acid, and hides its 14.5% alcohol well. Just a fantastic wine. (1335 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 1/9/2018: Absolutely love this lighter take on a zinfandel. Said it before and I'll say it again: A zin for a pinot lover--its all about balance. Black raspberry, black cherry and some cloves with high acids and tannins are evident but have to be searched out. Balanced! (1328 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 12/17/2017 & rated 89 points: From 75cl, exquisite cork. Light for a Zin, very gentle and lifted. Plums with cloves and cinnamon, overripe end-of-season raspberry fruit. Still some gentle tannic grip. No hurry. 89P (1260 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 5/2/2017: Pretty much spot on from July '15 note: First thing I notice is the color; lighter than most zins we consume. Over the next 3+ hours this really opens up. Toward the end of the night the wine shows brambly flowers, a mix black and red raspberry, cinnamon, a little vanilla and finishes like a nice black tea. (1786 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 12/21/2016 & rated 90 points: Light ruby color. The nose is moderately intense with a red fruited profile of cherry, raspberry, and a subtle touch of bramble. The silky palate is a little lighter than expected, but the hallmark Scherrer balance between acidity, fruit, and tannin is there. The finish has moderate length with pure, red fruit. Overall, this is a wine that is all about balance, but it does lean toward a lighter style of zinfandel. I think this will fill out with bottle time and will unleash more of its promise. (1879 views)
Tasted by Aparritz on 10/25/2016 & rated 91 points: A seriously good zin. This may be in somewhat of an awkward state with some heat still evident, but give this another year and it should be perfect. A zin treat for the most discerning. (2000 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 8/17/2016 & rated 89 points: A pleasant drink for a casual red meat-centric dinner but still showing plenty of tannin, which leads me to believe that it would benefit from a few more years in the bottle. (2199 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 5/26/2016 & rated 90 points: From 75cl, fine cork. Just after opening we both thought I'd poured a Sonoma Pinot Noir "by mistake". An hour in the decanter cleared up that little misunderstanding: Yep, it's a zin. Light, spicy, red fruit, touch of cinnamon, longer finish than the generally featherweight palate promises. No hurry. 90P (2634 views)

Scherrer Winery

Producer website

Scherrer Winery produces small batches of Pinot Noir, Old Vine Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvingon from the Russian River and Alexander Valleys.

Everyone seems to believe in doing minimal manipulation with the goal of letting the vineyard site speak. Additionally, I try to make good tasting wine that will age well. Since grapes do not walk off the vines and into the winery, let alone into barrels and bottles, we must actually do something with the grapes and wine along the way from time to time. Rest assured that I do try to get in the way as little as possible while trying to achieve the desired outcome. Most of our work is done and choices are made during the harvest season. Afterward, there is little reason to touch a wine on a wonderful trajectory. With the exception of our Dry Rosé, all our wines are bottled without fining or filtration. I regularly underplay the wines' provenance rather than overplay it. This causes some confusion and frustrates merchants who sell our wines. For this, I offer my apologies. I am, however, unlikely to change this deeply engrained habit.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
