Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 31 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rupert on 1/20/2024: Fine, the viognier fragrance quite gentle, lush oak in the background. All fine and dandy, but I like my condrieu to be explosive and youthful. (341 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 9/6/2022 & rated 95 points: Pretty great viognier. Wow. Sweet, floral nose with crazy minerality. Rich yet not oily with a full palate and dry finish. Maybe the best Condrieu I have ever had. (95) (999 views)
Tasted by Neuneuil on 4/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Drunk to celebrate 2 day old Madeleine’s homecoming.
No detailed notes in amongst all the emotion but definitely a wine to remember ! 😊 (1174 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 2/10/2021 & rated 91 points: [Blind] Savory and a little smoky. Nutty. Exotic spice. Not unduly advanced. Palate is pithy, dry apricot. Seedy, nutty core. More fruit apparent than the 2012 Chateau Grillet in the next glass. Orange citrus. A little oxidative but not obviously / overly. Interesting to try. Very little experience with white Rhone. (2184 views)
Tasted by William Kelley on 4/8/2020 & rated 94 points: Vernay's 2012 Côteau de Vernon is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with a fragrant bouquet of vine blossom, musky peach, honeysuckle and orange oil that has lost none of its vibrancy for several years of bottle age. Medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, it's satiny and textural while remaining quite lively and fine-boned for the appellation. Elegant and perfumed, it's a beautiful wine that's drinking well today. (4424 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 3/3/2020: From the wine list at Hearth (NYC). A big fan of these wines and this one was drinking great last night. Aromatic white florals on the nose. Weighty mouthfeel, with white stone fruit and minerals, waxy texture - acidity and salinity come through on finish. Delicious! (2161 views)
Tasted by mortensoby on 3/17/2019: 92 Rich Retains structure. Balanced, intense and expressive. (2037 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 1/23/2019 & rated 88 points: Orchard fruit. Fresh, slightly viscous. Broad, intense. (1921 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 10/12/2018: Big honeysuckle perfume, full and complex on the palate, gorgeous - I perfer this to the 2010. (1653 views)
Tasted by bartgab on 7/29/2018 & rated 96 points: I love this wine. The wine is spicy, full, rich with a lot of finesse and elegance. Honey and apricot on the never ending finish with so much character!!! Great wine (1548 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 6/17/2018: Flowers and apricots, full and rich, gorgeous (1671 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 5/26/2018: At 67PM: flowers, apricots, full and volutptuous, but not at all overweight. Lovely. (1370 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 2/28/2018: Another top notch bottle of this - voluptuous and exotic, and yet with a tension - super (1390 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 1/25/2018 & rated 94 points: Sensational - fragrant, exotic, but with a mineral depth - best showing yet (1418 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 1/6/2018 & rated 93 points: Exotic perfume, full bodied, multilayered - gorgeous (1242 views)
Tasted by MAOC on 11/2/2017: More overtly floral than others (the most of the six in he vertical) with richer stonefruit and a hint of orange blossom. Rounder than 2014 alongside it, very good but perhaps overall more linear and simple than some **** (1274 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 10/5/2017 & rated 94 points: Best showing yet - heady turkish delight perfume, full and caressing on the palate, but not at all heavy (1466 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 8/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Intoxicating viognier perfume, luxuriously fat on the palate, gorgeous (1388 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 4/11/2017: Heaps better than the 2010. This quite conventionally floral and apricot. Lovely. (1735 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 4/4/2017 & rated 91 points: This is big, voluptuous, quite lovely, but some of the other condrieus (Gerard, Perret) recently have had more complexity and drive. (1674 views)
Tasted by FransS on 3/15/2017 & rated 94 points: Dinner at De Bokkedoorns with Watse and Robin: Ripe, white fruit, violets, glycerine, a whiff of vanilla, very refined, lovely bitters, but at the end a bit too much alcohol. Nevertheless a fantastic wine. (1587 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 5/21/2016 & rated 92 points: Light yellow; floral nose, butterflowers; fatty, buttery (2132 views)
Tasted by Eros Coniglio on 5/20/2016 & rated 94 points: Simply fantastic bottle of wine. (1999 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/2/2015 & rated 94 points: What a treat! This is a condrieu for grown ups with the exotic fruit, pears et al kept in the background - it's there (but hidden) and the minerals, acidity more present, presented in a creamy texture, that is unique condrieu. At Cave Taurobole, Tain (with R&P). (2559 views)
Tasted by Peliot on 1/24/2015 & rated 92 points: This was a sturdy companion for some goat cheese Brie and a dinner of gnocchi done in a rustic style with Brussels sprouts. Beautiful nose, a bit less effusive than many Viognier, in a good way. More focused nose with peachy fruit, wet stone, and, on the palate, medium oily body and lively if slightly tart. With an hour it developed a creamy caramel base note. Probably hit this too young but it was sound. (2499 views)

A pioneer in the renewal of the Condrieu appellation, Domaine Georges Vernay has always made wines of unique style, notable for their finesse, elegance and harmony. Three generations have left the mark of the philosophy on the estate, while perpetuating its traditions in the greatest respect for both vines and winegrowers.

Domaine Georges Vernay lies among steep slopes of the northern Rhône Valley. The property has become a major emblem of Rhône Valley winegrowing, from the time when Georges Vernay saved the Condrieu appellation to the international awards earned by Christine Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie.

At Domaine Georges Vernay, the respect for Nature is apparent in the deep understanding of the past and the full knowledge of the traditional techniques used; the writings of many generations are essential in both the vineyard and the winery. Similarly, while striving to constantly improve quality, the grapes are treated using methods that respect both flora and fauna. The incredibly steep vineyards make mechanisation impossible, so the vines are maintained by hand and without use of residual weed killers or insecticides. In the cellar, winemaking is a constant quest for perfection; every year the working methods are reviewed, and every year, for three generations, the estate strives to define each vintage as finely as possible. Ahead of its time and a defender of northern Rhône Valley values, Domaine Georges Vernay has the advantage of a unique microclimate and exceptional soils.

The estate counts 8 hectares of land in the Condrieu appellation, 2.5 hectares in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, and 1.5 hectares in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Wines are made from two grape varieties: Viognier and Syrah.

The quality of Domaine Georges Vernay’s soils and the special climate of the region release the legendary aromatic finesse of these two great grape varieties.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
