Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 6/18/2020: Zooming through Burgundy and Chablis!: The theme for this Zoom tasting was white Burgundy/Chablis. The host also threw in a Rombauer Chardonnay to keep us honest. The wines were poured in jars for transport around 4:00-4:30 and then transported and poured into glasses at 6:15, and drank over the next couple hours. Pours were approx 5 oz. The line-up included the following:

- 2011 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
- 2016 Louis Jadot (Duc de Magenta) Chassagne-Montrachet "Morgeot - Clos de la Chapelle"
- 2014 Xavier Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres
- 2012 Vincent Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon
- 1990 Fabien Coche-Bouillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres
- 2018 Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay Carneros
- 2013 St Innocent Shea Pinot Noir (Bonus Red)

The wines were served single blind and results were as follows: Group's top 3: Number 1 was the Rombauer (huge surprise); number 2 was the 2011 Fevre Les Clos; and number 3 was the 2012 Dauvissat Chablis. My order was: (1) 2018 Rombauer; (2) 2014 Xavier Monnot Les Folatieres; (3) 2011 Fevre Les Clos; (4) 2012 Dauvissat Chablis; (5) Jadot Morgeot - Clos de la Chapelle; and (6) 1990 Fabien Les Folatieres. All wines were very good, except the 1990 Fabien was oxidized, but still drinkable.

- 1990 Fabien Coche-Bouillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières: Oxidized, but still drinkable. I would like to try a perfect bottle of this wine. The nose was poor, with oxidation dominating all scents, although a little butterscotch and scorched earth came through. The palate was much better. Oxidation still present, but not as dominant as on the nose. You could still taste the underlying fruit and minerality. Salty fish, coupled with some citrus, sea shell and limestone were all present. As I said, a drinkable bottle, but not one I feel I can officially score. Unofficially, 88-89....drinkable, but not too enjoyable. However, you can tell a good bottle would score well. My number 6 out of 6. (1695 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/18/2020 flawed bottle: Virtual White Burgundy Tasting (Home): Medium gold color. PNP and poured into vessels at 4:15, sealed and poured into glasses around 6:30 or in my case a bit after 7pm; drank a glass single blind over 2.5 hours. There wasn't any doubt which wine this was. Definitely the darkest of color, though not that dark actually. Still it was fairly oxidized. The minerality shows, the citrus is there, but overshadowed, lacquer/mineral spirit notes, lemon oil, honeyed. When these are on they are fantastic, but maybe sitting around 87 points tonight. Correctly identified. (1471 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 6/18/2020 flawed bottle: Blind White Burgundy: The single blind lineup was:
- 2011 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
- 2016 Louis Jadot (Duc de Magenta) Chassagne-Montrachet "Morgeot - Clos de la Chapelle"
- 2014 Xavier Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres
- 2012 Vincent Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon
- 1990 Fabien Coche-Bouillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres
- 2018 Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay Carneros
- 2013 St Innocent Shea Pinot Noir (Bonus Red)

This wine was the most distinct in that there was significant oxidation. I am marking it flawed because I don't want to negatively score it, but it'd be in the 87 range the way it was drinking. The reason is that beyond the oxidation there was a pleasant caramelly profile and some biting acidity that really stood out. I would have happily consumed this at home by myself, but in this tasting it was definitely the laggard. (1255 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 2/23/2020 & rated 90 points: Served at a dinner party; attendees specifically noted enjoyment. (1020 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/10/2019 & rated 95 points: Heidi's Redux Group: Memorable Wines (Ciao Bella, Mpls): Amazingly light gold color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. This was right there with the best of the bottles we've had. Stunningly fresh and bright on both the nose and palate. Lemon oil, briny, citrus zest, fennel seed, wet stones, and a burst of wihite flowers on the nose. The palate is focused and lifted, excellent concentration, driven by the wet stone minerality. There is a complex mix of fruit with lemon, lime, apple, and hints of tangerine oil, citrus zest, taut with great cut. Poised and precise, amazing again. 95+ to 96pts. (996 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/10/2019 & rated 95 points: Same Btl as R&Rler. Served along side a '15 Raveneau Butteaux and '07 PYCM Corton CC, this was clearly the most fully realized blt showing the most ethereal elegance and placidity. This was just lovely with terrific minerality. If only, we could count on more blts, this age, to perform like this one has. The likelyhood of premox scares the crap out of me since when you buy these old btls, you own them. That said, I'm going after some of these. Thanks Kevin! What a great 3 btl flight of 3 wines uniquely different from each other! (986 views)
Tasted by BradE on 10/10/2019: Lovely juice. Developed and showing its age, in a very good way. Regal. (828 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 8/29/2019 & rated 90 points: In perfect condition, but as others, I was looking for a more complex experience. (549 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 10/28/2018 & rated 89 points: Unbelievably youthful and young; hardly any nose except a bunch of band-aid, lots of white kind of bland chalk. Not much going on here, perfect shape, clear color, maybe old absorbed reduction; can't believe this is 1990. Grape shape, but uninteresting. EWG Green Street Tavern (949 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Mitch on 4/21/2018 & rated 92 points: Not quite at the level of the Meursault Charmes 90 from this producer but a beauty nonetheless. Seamless, perfect integration, just lacking the power and heft for a higher score. Still, for 28 years old, fantastic showing. (1084 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/15/2018 & rated 88 points: Big Bordeaux XIV (Kevin and Vicki's): This wine tasted tired. There was more oxidation than I would like in a wine, along with lemon, wax, and butterscotch. (1409 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/13/2018 & rated 89 points: Big Bordeaux XIV: Featuring 1982 and 1990 (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was another bottle showing more aging character. There's enough to like here, particularly on the palate, but not the revelatory bottles of the past.. The nose is a bit odd with cedar, beeswax, and lemon pledge on the nose with less distinct minerality. The palate shows plenty of flinty minerality, lemon, honey, and lemon oil with some oxidative character. (1602 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/2/2017: Lonny Might Be Turning Sixty (Tilia, Mpls): Medium dark gold color, more advanced color than all previous bottles. Followed a 1.75 oz pour over 30 minutes. This was quite a bit more advanced and showing oxidative character and apple cider notes. More honeyed and still has some lemon oil texture. Had we not had such pristine bottles previously, one would probably accept this as a more likely place to be in the evolution. 88ish pts. (2325 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 8/26/2017 & rated 91 points: I don't think this bottle was showing as well as some others. Kind of shut down. Maybe past its prime, or perhaps just a particularly flat bottle. Nice, but not exceptional. (1436 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 5/19/2017: 4th time is a charm for this library release of 1990 Folatieres. The other 3 ranged from noticeably oxidized to lifeless, and I was wondering about the glowing notes from other tasters. Well, I finally got a good one, and when it's on, it's quite delightful.

Great cut and precision, ample dry extract, long mineral finish and enticing nose. I was in White Burgundy Heaven.

If they were all like this one, I'd buy every bottle on the planet. But at a 1:3 ratio of good to bad, I'll not be rebuying. Hopefully my last two bottles will be more like this one. (1308 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 4/14/2017 & rated 93 points: Full of energy and verve, a bright and engaging bottle. The palate is oily with a bordering on rich texture, and lemon oil. There hints of lime and citrus fruit buffered with a honeyed sweet finish that coats. It's almost totally complete and really it is what I want from a white Burg at this level, at this age, and at this cost. (1445 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 3/23/2017 & rated 94 points: While a Feb btl was a complete pre mox disaster tonight's was in mint condition. These have to be reconditioned or refreshed btls, right??? The label, and most of all, the cork are in like new condition. A light colored cork with no crumble and zero soak. Not only fresh, for its age but, as fresh as most white Burgs on release. And yet this shows btl age resolve and quiet elegance. This has it all! Most of all... harmony, class and elegance. But also, concentration, intensity, minerallity and a sappy blend of citrus, honey, spice and stone fruit flavors. Delicious, singing, balanced and fully realized. Yea, after the Feb btl I opened this with trepidation and fear of pouring another $70 down the drain. it was a relief to see a lighter gold, non premox color. (1839 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/15/2017 & rated 95 points: Wine Wednesday (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light gold/straw color. Drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. I noticed that Chablis28 happened to have an oxidized bottle yesterday - what a shame as these have been so good. I think his observation is correct that his was the first of any bottles our group has purchased with any oxidation concerns at all. This bottle was firing on all cylinders and was in top form offering exactly what one has come to expect. Great nose with lime, floral notes, bristling minerality. The palate is full of power and tension, oily texture, lemon oil, great powdery dry lime extract, green apple, lemon, hints of tangerine and the same intense minerality. Complex, focused and with wonderful purity this is about as good as it gets. (1478 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 2/14/2017 flawed bottle: This couldn't have been much more premoxed. Sherry....Ick! First one of these that wasn't in pristine condition??? (1489 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 12/30/2016 & rated 93 points: Similar notes but lacks the freshness of the last bottle. (912 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 12/17/2016 flawed bottle: I thought this wine was sound although a bit flat. Everyone else at the table thought it was too oxidized to drink. Hopefully the next bottle will show better. (843 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/6/2016 & rated 94 points: Mixed WTDS at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This start with a little nail polish up front in addition to the requisite orchard and stone fruits. The nial polish blows off over 10 minutes or so and leaves a very distinctive green fruit nose with plenty of mineral to drive the train. The palate shows the classical elegance and drive of purity and minerality of fine burgundy. This is taut and focused with a linear beam of minerality that contrasts the pear, lemon and green apple flavors. Very good and with impressive length. Maybe not quite as much power as the last bottle. 93+ to 94pts. (1382 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 12/6/2016 & rated 94 points: Same btl as R&Rler I continue to have a love affair with wine. Resolved elegance and class but yet as lifted as a 4-6 year old Puligny. Agree with R&Rler the minerality is inspiring here. I received got a couple of these myself and will open one too soon. (1308 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 11/16/2016 & rated 95 points: Like others here, I believe we have caught a unicorn. Bottles show obvious signs of reconditioning like new corks, etc. However what is inside the bottle is greatness. Pale golden color. Nose of flint, green apple, lemon peel, and spice. On the palate rich, yet weightless with bright Meyer lemon, stone fruit, and that great saline quality that only the best whites give you. Long lively finish with plenty of racy acidity. Incredible, can probably get better from here. Drink with a little air or continue to hold. (920 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
