Alexander with Barbers (2800 views) | | Tasted by mike7145 on 1/12/2015 & rated 89 points: Steele does zin's well. It's light in the beginning and then finishes with some nice spice. I love the Catfish Zin, but this is not a bad option for those that like a lighter zin. (2599 views) | | Tasted by GrandWagoneer on 12/31/2014 & rated 90 points: Subtle nose, tasted of cherries. Still has legs. (2642 views) | | Tasted by Neecies on 9/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Bought five bottles to serve at a wine tasting, and only discovered when I went to open them that I had vintages 10, 10, 10, 12 and 09. CRAP. A quick vertical at the kitchen sink just now revealed that the '10 is the best, thank god, and the 09 not far behind. (Lord forgive me but I had to serve a cuvee.) Classic 'zinberry' fruit with good spice, minerals, and a satisfying loamy underpinning. First place. What we have here is really nice cool climate zin -- not flashy, but complete, and true to its place. Young enough to have some ripe cherry and bramble, but old enough to have some polish and poise.
Tons of licorice on both the nose and the palate. The fruit is mostly cherry, with some stewed red berries and mocha supporting. Really nice acidity, but there's a softness that suggests that peak is here and gone soon. The big surprise is the inviting nose and long finish -- has really nice stuffing. SRP is $18, and paid $12 -- overdelivers either way you look at it. (3131 views) | | Tasted by Mitzi on 5/11/2014 & rated 92 points: We don't understand the low scores given to this wine. A classic zinfandel! A little bit peppery. (1161 views) | | Tasted by Rezy13 on 3/1/2014: See through maroon; intensely smoky, dark spice, nutmeg, clove, red currant, bramble and briar, pomegranate; medium bodied, vanilla rounds out the bramble, red berry, soft tannin, a bit of heat on the finish. (1040 views) | | Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 12/8/2013: This came across as heavily medicinal. It is by far the least successful Steele wine I've tried. Given how much I generally enjoy their wines--especially the 2009 vintage of this one--I'll hold off slamming this one with the low 80s score it may deserve. (1141 views) |
| Steele Wines Producer WebsiteZinfandel ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-ZinfandelUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson North CoastThe North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties.
