Tasted by michael47 on 6/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Fruity soft Grenache Syrah. Flowery perfumed nose and some nice spiciness on the after taste. Needs to be drunk sooner rather than later. (1144 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 11/12/2017 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1.5 hrs. Dark fruit nose. The Mourvedre dominated the first glass and the Grenache & Syrah came out as we drank through the bottle. Nice, yet soft, tastes of dark fruits. Well balanced. (1503 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 10/6/2017 & rated 90 points: W lamb stew and eggplant bechamel. Very good combo. Yummy wine especially after an hour of air, fruit really started to shine. As n my previous note, this is great mouvedre based wine. It really speaks and is interesting. It will live longer but i would enjoy the youth it shows today. The color and taste are still young.  Tasted by VinoPKM on 2/8/2016 & rated 91 points: Wow this is in a great spot- drink up. Great fruit and pepper. Very food friendly and drinks alone very well.
Glad I bought a case off an auction- $24.30 a bottle is a killer deal. (2657 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 4/21/2015 & rated 92 points: What a wonderful wine. Still going strong. Needs a good 30 minutes to reach potential (2782 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 3/31/2015 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured, drank over 2 nights. Rich, savory fruit. Interesting wine, soft on the front palate, finishes with a peppery zing. (2307 views)
Tasted by George Lopez on 2/24/2015 & rated 93 points: Delicious wine with a lot of fruit. Immediately after popping the cork, you could smell the bouquet half a room away. Very nice finish as well. (1836 views)
Tasted by underwds on 1/10/2015 & rated 88 points: Dark violet, almost indigo color. OK mouth feel. Black fruit, a hint of licorice and chocolate, and definite leather notes. Even after a couple of hours of decanting the toasted oak finish didn't close with a balance but rather an abrupt whack across the palate. Lots of M, not so much G or S. (1819 views)
Tasted by mike l. on 9/18/2014 & rated 92 points: this showed very well. balanced and rich. (1481 views)
Tasted by fingers on 8/30/2014 & rated 90 points: Notes after following for about 4 hrs open. Dark purple color, 95% saturated with a wide meniscus and clear, very slow legs. No sediment.
Bold aromas of spices, sweet tobacco, roses, fresh cotton candy, high alcohol, and a little toasty wood. Lush and smooth palate with delectable flavor that was probably better balanced in earlier times. At 15.2% abv, it's asking a lot for the fruit to hold its own, particularly in the absence of supporting earth and/or acidity. As noted by another, there is a nice high-altitude, elegant and restrained profile vs. the typical standard of this producer, but it is still tough for me to imagine that better days are ahead. Drink over the next year or so. 4+12+17+7= 90 (1545 views)
Tasted by Ltomanek on 7/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Notes of pepper, black currant and a finish that ends on a violet note. A nice wine that goes with a lot of food. We had it with a dish of Lima beans, feta cheese, cilantro and sumac after Yotam Ottoleghi's Plenty cookbook. (1389 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 5/9/2014 & rated 91 points: W chicken tacos. Great wine, this deserves an hour decant. Good fruit and body. As said by others, mouvedre comes through. Very nice, good finish. (1248 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 4/27/2014 & rated 88 points: Jammy fruit, dark chocolate, minerality, smokey oak. Tight tannins. B/B+ (1109 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 4/25/2014: Bought this at La Vine at the dana point harbor and drank with Russ and Mike. Big boy wine, no doubt but extremely enjoyable. Sure it's 15.2 ABV but you can't really tell. What I like the most is Mourvèdre is playing a prominent role in this wine and the earthy funkiness shows beautifully. Smoky oak note mid palate. (1011 views)
Tasted by fingers on 4/9/2014 flawed bottle: Just the lightest whiff of TCA. Too bad, because it was really good otherwise (1262 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 2/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Bold full nose of blackberry, raspberry and dark chocolate. Palate is full bodied with round, luscious fruit. Juicy acidity provides pop and lift. Chocolate and herbs on the mid-palate. Medium plus, flavorful finish. Not a load of complexity but full of flavor and balanced in the style, concealing its 15.2 ABV reasonably well. Drinking nicely now, why hold it longer? (1044 views)
Tasted by Dagalaifus on 10/20/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. This wine is a Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah blend that is the darkest garnet in the glass. Aromas of cherry, violet and leather. On the palate, medium-bodied with the same, cherry, leather as well as blackberry, licorice, Christmas spices and a subtle hint of mint. The wine has a medium-length finish and is clearly intended to be enjoyed now; so, skip the cellar, or imbibe over the next three years. While McPrice's wines are never shrinking violets, this wine has a litheness and elegance, which distinguishes it from your typical Paso or Santa Barbara County Fruit bomb. That litheness and elegance, I imagine, can be attributed in part, to the Alta Mesa Vineyard, which is the source of McPrice's grapes for this wine. The Alta Mesa vineyard is one of the highest vineyards (elevation 3200') in the United States and produces slower-ripening, but extraordinarily complex fruit. (1019 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 10/20/2013 & rated 89 points: My wife tasted blind and spotted the chocolate tastes of Mourvedre right away. Nice fruity tastes with medium finish. (1016 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 11/8/2012 & rated 92 points: 15.2% ABV. 43% Mourvedre, 38% Grenache, 19% Syrah. Opaque dark garnet in the glass. Ripe smelling with aroma of sweet berry fruit and some complicated spice/leather/animal fur notes in the far background. Ripe sweet black and red fruit on the palate. Fairly plush with just a touch of heat that didn't bother me. Tasty. Probably better in a year, but drinking well now if you like the style, which I do. As an aside, I did not see any vineyard designation on the label this vintage - just Santa Barbara County and the Altas Vinas name. (1853 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
