Tasted by aquacongas on 12/4/2022 & rated 94 points: blind vs Keller Morstein 2003
In this case I prefer the more full bodied Keller. The Morstein is more austere but also with ripe yellow stone fruits. The 2003 has still a vibrant acidity structure. Both at least drinkable for the next 5 years, even that they won't get better with more aging. 94 (748 views)
Tasted by MQuentel@web.de on 11/30/2021 & rated 92 points: The nose opens with planty aromas, followed by aromas of highly ripe yellow fruits, also with tropical hints. Overall a bit cooler than the 2003 tasted before, but surprisingly also thicker and plumper on the palate; yellow-brown spiciness, highly ripe yellow and tropical fruits. A powerful, full-bodied wine that still finds its balance due to the mature acidity, but I would have hoped for a notch more from 2004. 92/100 drink out (596 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 12/22/2019 & rated 95 points: Concept Riesling Christmas Special 2019 (Concept Riesling, Düsseldorf): not blind
Some popcorn and roasted nuts. Very powerful and elegant likewise. Intrusive but nicely balanced. 95 (1222 views)
Tasted by MQuentel@web.de on 10/12/2017 & rated 93 points: First Class Riesling from a super vintage. A beautiful package of herbal aromas, a delicate white fruit and ulterior minerality. Perfectly ripened, with a perfectly integrated acidity and beautiful harmony. (1469 views)
Tasted by m_arcon on 9/5/2014 & rated 94 points: 2004 Riesling Großes Gewächs retrospective (Chris Home): Colour: Intense light golden colour
Nose: "Dark" nose with a lot of smoke & minerality alongside some vanilla, almonds, mirabelle and some vegetal notes after some time in the glass.
Palate: Tension & power is there. Brighter shoulders than the two wines from the Nahe we had the flight before. Slightly bitter on the back-end which is lovely. Long finish. A very "complete" wine. (2375 views)
Tasted by Oh Dae-su on 9/5/2014 & rated 91 points: Asperg Grand Growth Riesling Cup (Asperg): At the start we had some problems with the hyper wet cork in Wittmann‘s Westhofener Morstein GG Riesling 2004 bottleneck. Luckily the wine turned out to be absolutely fine. Its colour was lush, colourful and by far not overaged. Its nose was really creamy-round, nicely fruitful, a bit ample and enriched with fragrances of vanilla from imagined oak. The taste showed very balanced and pretty typical ample qualities of a great Rheinhessen Riesling. It appeared very accessible, downright stone fruit oriented and very well equipped with smoothness, richness, some deepness and pure beef. Not so much spice or sublimity in my opinion. Surely, in a very good shape at the moment. I enjoyed it very much, although those rich characteristics weren’t me. In my opinion an absolutely very decent Rheinhessen Riesling. Group rating was 93,2 points. My rating was 91 points. (2842 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/26/2006 & rated 91 points: Frankland Estate International Riesling Tasting - Workshop #1: "New Wave from the Old World" (Sydney, Australia): Minerally, pure peach and apple fruit on the tight nose. The fresh, zingy palate exhibits very good focus and balance - a wine of restrained power that has precision but also intensity. Exhibits excellent length and is really a seductive wine. (4060 views)
Tasted by GuterWein on 3/18/2006: Wittmanns größter Wein des Jahrgangs 2004. Ein gewaltiger Wein. Ein kraftvoller Naturbursche, dicht gepackt, von geradezu bissiger Mineralität, absolut trocken, mit einem Säurerückgrat, das fordernde Textur präsentiert. Keine weiche pomadige Fülle, kein m (2411 views)

Westhofener Morstein

From the winery:
The Westhofener Morstein is a sloped vineyard, facing south. Its soil consists of sandy loam over a limestone base. Its subsoil is strongly influenced by chalky acquiferous layers which act as water veins and turn into wells in very rainy periods. The consequence is a strong humidity in the subsoil, which offers ideal conditions for the rootstock by constantly supplying it with minerals and nutrients. It is this factor which defines the mineral character of the wines from this vineyard. The 2009 Morstein Spätburgunder GG is a wonderful example of this. Dark coloured with brick-red reflexes it portraits vanilla and cherry scents aligned with light notes of spices and roasted bread. On the palate it displays a young, elegant character with hints of peanuts, which bear witness to its 18 month maturation in barriques. This wine has a wonderful creamy textured finish and can be enjoyed on its own with as much pleasure as in combination with meat dishes or strong vegetarian meals.

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
