01 (174 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 11/26/2022: 14.5% alcohol. Short anonymous cork of reasonable quality, but hey it did the job as there is virtually no wine penetration. Dark impenetrable colour all the way to the rim.
Lovely dark fruited nose (mostly fresh but some lightly stewed too) with liquorice in evidence too. Juicy and energetic in the mouth with a substantial uplift in the finish thanks to superbly judged acidity. The alcohol does not impinge, and the overall impression is of a much fresher wine than typical for Gigondas; good grip too. True to the Montirius style which downplays opulence.
A success without a doubt, and in perfect condition at age ten. (227 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 2/17/2022: 14.5% alcohol. G 80%, Mrvdr 20% (in the vineyard). Short cork, but very dense and showing no wine penetration. The colour is dark with no sign of ageing.
The nose has olives at first, followed by liquorice, redcurrant coulis, and a pleasant pharmaceutical note. Very vivid in the mouth with superb wild berries and an invigorating acidity in the finish. The alcohol level is perceptible only through its secondary effects (as in do not drive afterwards); otherwise a balanced wine without any excess of opulence.
In excellent condition.
I don't think that I have ever been disappointed by a bottle of Montirius of any denomination; individual winemaking of outstanding quality. (308 views)
Tasted by evanqian on 12/27/2018 & rated 89 points: 80% G, 20% M. Not fresh, it was under casual cellar condition. Garnet with brown hue. Dry plum, earthy and meaty ( in pleasant way), some white pepper and dry herbals. Rustic tannins, warm alcohol. Medium bodied, Some soy sauce in m+ finish.

A rustic and honest wine.

Tasted by Eudemis on 10/4/2018: 14.5% alcohol. Good short dense cork with no wine penetration. Dark colour with some thinning at the edge of the rim.
The nose is subdued before swirling, as so often with Rhône wines; elegant blackberry aromas upon swirling. The mouth is several steps ahead, with blackberries again and a suggestion of blueberries, a superb balance and a lively finish; no undue alcohol heat, and no oak whatever. This is not a Gigondas which tries to emulate CNdP. A very stylish wine and a repeat purchase. (884 views)
Tasted by chatters on 2/2/2018: Blackberry, whole berry soft fruit backed by peppery spiceand touches of sweet liquorice. Tannins are slightly rustic but this is a bit of a pleasant drop. (1022 views)
Tasted by james05500 on 12/3/2017 & rated 91 points: Ideal Rhone marriage:) Fruity grenache and meaty Mourvedre! Ready to drink great wine with lots of fruits and well concentrated. It gives huge pleasure itself and with duck:) Want more:) (1158 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/1/2017 & rated 88 points: Monthly Tasting Group EEE #064: Southern Rhône (@ AR): Somewhat developed bouquet with autumn forest. On the palate garrigue, beautifully dosed oak, forest floor, dark berries, fudge and licorice. Ok acidity and round but firm tannin. Will drink nicely until the early 2020’s. (1278 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 10/9/2017: 14.5% alcohol. Good cork, short but dense. Grenache 80%, Mourvèdre 20%. The colour is deep, with no sign of ageing.
Lovely nose with violets and a certain medicinal/herbal feel (in a good way) which I have have come to associate with this estate.
The mouth is superb, with liquorice, dark wild berries, and a purity which is quite rare in southern Rhône. No oak at all here. The alcohol does not stick out in any way (in fact I was quite surprised when I looked at the back label post consumption).
This is not a typical Gigondas, and maybe some people will be disappointed. For me it combines the best of the Southern and Northern Rhône spirits, the former because of the Grenache and the latter in the form of some grip and a hint of austerity (in a good sense).
Quite unique in my experience. This is delicious now but it has a long way to go.
A repeat purchase. (531 views)

Montirius

Producer website

"Montirius has been a family estate for 5 generations. The slow conversion process from traditional to bio-dynamic vineyard management and wine making of the 133 acres owned by the family was started by Eric Saurel’s father Max in 1980. The estate was fully converted in 1996 and in 1999 Montirius became the first winery in the Vacqueyras & Gigondas appellations to be certified Bio-Dynamic. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert and Bio-Dynamic by Biodyvin."

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
