Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 74 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vancouver on 2/11/2024 & rated 94 points: Wow, just a wonderful bottle that seems to be cruising after 10 or years in the cellar.

Just starting to lighten in color.

Lots of cherry liqueur, baking spice, melted liquorice and herbal elements (thyme etc.) on the fresh and pronounced nose.

Full bodied with plenty of structure and a long and delicious finish.

Drink now or hold for another 5 years (I wouldn't push it further than that). (262 views)
Tasted by mcflytfc on 11/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Pale ruby/garnet in the glass. Alcohol is noticeable on the nose, baking spice and earthy nose. Tannins are still present, pleasant tart acidity, quite fruity and a nice hit of raspberry. (190 views)
Tasted by clayh55 on 6/9/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautifully aged Gigondas. Bramble, garrigue, maybe a trace of menthol. Acidity and tannins perfectly balanced. Even better on day two after vacu-vining overnight. Wish this weren't my last bottle of this vintage. (392 views)
Tasted by prism on 4/9/2023 flawed bottle: Corked. (472 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/30/2023 & rated 91 points: Mature bouquet with red and some dark berries and good garrigue. On the palate the same. There is still fresh acidity and pleasant tannin, but the wine is reaching the end of its maturity stage and still lovely and tempting now. Drink soon. (958 views)
Tasted by prism on 11/5/2022 & rated 93 points: A very well-made Gigondas; almost refreshing in its complexity. (488 views)
Tasted by Stephen Rash on 7/2/2022: Dark garnet in color with slight bricking at the edge. Very tertiary at first, taking almost an hour of air to coax out any fruit. Very complex nose. Balanced Gigondas and the only complaint was the thin (watery) finish.

Glass 1 (pnp) - Aromas of plum, spice, roasted meat, pine needles, and black olive on the nose. Tastes of cherry, pomegranate, and baking spice on the palate.

Glass 2 (4 hours later) - Aromas of cherry, plum, licorice, spice, pine needles, and olive on the nose. Tastes of cherry, olive, and pepper on the palate. (738 views)
Tasted by EdKz@comcast.net on 6/13/2022 & rated 89 points: Opened up over 2 hours, earthy with short finish; disappointing. (632 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/23/2022 & rated 91 points: Red and dark berries in the bouquet. Good garrigue, some sweetness, pleasant acidity and round tannin. The wine is ready now, but no real hurry. Don’t wait too long anymore either. (963 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 8/29/2021: Last of 6 bottles. Loved this as always. Medium red color. Beautiful nose - floral, garrigue, black raspberry, glycerin and baking spice. Palate consistent with nose. Full body, medium acids, integrated (low) tannins and very long finish. 93+ (805 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/19/2021 & rated 92 points: In the bouquet red berries and sweet spices. On the palate sweet spices to begin with, some pleasant sweetness from the alcohol (15% ABV), good acidity and soft bitterness and tannin. A delicious wine which is ready now and can last a few more years as well. (1324 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 1/19/2021 & rated 94 points: Drank over two days with pleasure and surprise. This wine improved with the rest and showed more of its mineral content. This is a delicious and complex wine with beautiful red and dark red fruit flavors, some spice and minerality. Very good mouthfeel and aftertaste. So decant this wine to assist in its development. (982 views)
Tasted by Vanja1 on 1/17/2021 & rated 90 points: Rubin med rust i fargen, ufiltrert og uklarhet men klar og ren. 80% grenache (gamle stokker fra 1947) og 20% mourvedre.

PnP i går.
Tasted by CWilliam on 12/28/2020: Didn't take notes -drank beautifully though. 92-93. (859 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 8/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Decanted one hour. Initially soft on the palate, but as it sits in the glass more interesting flavors and aromas of raspberry, kirsch and maybe some toasted spices emerge. Relatively sweet red fruits on the palate, with modest energy and a bit of tartness on the finish. Served at a cool temp - no heat from the 15% ABV. Give this time to air out. It could age further, but seems to me to be at an ideal drinking window now. (785 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 5/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Dark red color with some sediment. Glycerin, black raspberry, tart cherry and leather on nose. Palate had a similar flavor profile ex. leather. Full body, medium acidity, low tannins and long finish. 92+/- (844 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 4/9/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted and let rest a while. Slowly evolved into a beautiful wine that is drinking well right now. Lots of Grenache red fruit flavors with a unique richness and slightly acidic backbone of a first-rate Gigondas has to offer. (921 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 4/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Delicious and complex with lots of red and dark red fruits. Very clean and pure. Nice nose and aftertaste. (903 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 3/9/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine continues to put on weight nicely. The red fruit profile is balanced with the rustic earthy notes coming from the Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. Layered with good complexity. Aromatically pleasing. Good juice. (961 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 1/11/2020 & rated 92 points: The nose was gorgeous, with a red fruit profile of strawberries, raspberry, roses and dusty spice, contrasted by savory herbs, with moist, earthy minerality. On the palate, soft, juicy textures offset by zesty acids and spice cascaded across the senses, delivering sweet violet-infused cherry, blackberry and savory herbs, with a hint of tannin providing grip. It finished long, zesty, yet structured, resonating on blue and red fruits laced with purple floral tones, minerals and lingering tannin. The 2012 Le Louisiane is a few years away from it's perfect window of enjoyment, but already providing a pleasurable drinking experience. (1928 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 12/17/2019 & rated 93 points: Light crimson in color. 15% ABV. Highly perfumed nose of red fruits, grilled meats, flowers and pepper. Medium body with exquisite acidity. Well balanced. Lean and somewhat rustic with a sense of power and concentration. Cherries, spiced plums, kirsch, pepper and minerals on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Elegant, classicly styled Gigondas that drinks well now. Best over the next 2-4 years. (1213 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Regular dinner group. Many wines based on the book “1001 wines you must try before you die”. (By EM @ Bottles): Good garrigue and red berries in the bouquet. On the palate garrigue as well, a lot of sweetness and good acidity. Very good wine in its young maturity stage. (1545 views)
Tasted by Musigny1955 on 10/23/2019 & rated 90 points: {bottle 1 of 6, first try; perfect fill} Good wine (concur with most the notes giving higher scores than me) but tastes a little anonymous, touch "too modern" for my taste ... wanted more funk. Hard to tell this is Gigondas and not some other more generic appellation. (1233 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 10/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Pnp; medium ruby-garnet in colour. Nose of red and black cherries with some beef blood and iodine. On the palate, there are spicy black cherries with plums; some dark leathery fruits with dark green herbs are noticed as well; faint hint of caramel and mocha at the end also; tannins are slowly melting away compared to my last tn of 2015. Light-medium bodied with a medium finish. One bottle left :( (934 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 8/10/2019 & rated 92 points: Red and dark fruit combine with a touch of underbrush, beef blood and Mediterranean spice. Wonderful mouth feel! The Syrah and mourvedre add depth and earthiness. This is a wonderful Gigondas. (1015 views)

Domaine Saint-Damien

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

St. Damien was an Early Christian saint (martyred in the year 287 A.D.), considered the patron saint of doctors. There was a chapel to his honour in the tiny hamlet of La Baumette, just outside the village of Gigondas, where Joel Saurel, the owner of the domaine, lives. The name Saint Damien for the domaine was introduced in 1979. Four generations have worked on this family estate since 1821. In 2013 Romain joined his father on the estate. The estate has been certified organic since 2012.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
